This page is a temporary page, listing towns and localities in the current Shire of South Gippsland.
South Gippsland Shire (original shire)
The Shire of South Gippsland was formed in February 1894 when it separated from the
Shire of Alberton. The first shire president was Mr Paul Buckley who held this position
from 1894-1895 and continued to serve on the council until 1907. Mr R W Travis was the
first shire engineer and Mr E C Clark, the first shire secretary.
The original council table and chairs were in constant use until 1975 when new shire
offices were built in Pioneer Street, Foster. This furniture together with photos of
former councillors and other municipal memorabilia is now in the reading room at the
shire's historical society museum at Foster.
The shire residents celebrated the centenary in 1994 then bade farewell to the councillors
and staff when the Local Government Board was instructed by the Victorian Government of
the day to amalgamate with the then Shires of Korumburra, Woorayl and Mirboo North to
become the South Gippsland Shire administered by government appointed commissioners. Mrs
Heather Bligh was the last president of the old council but she was returned to office in
1997 to represent the people in Foster when municipal elections were resumed.
