Created a District 6 Nov 1855 and proclaimed a Shire 2 Feb 1864. Part of Alberton was annexed on 16 Feb 1894 to create the Shire of South Gippsland and the north riding was annexed to Rosedale Shire on 20 May 1914.

Created a District 13 Sep 1864 and proclaimed a Shire 10 Oct 1865. A portion of the Shire of Bairnsdale was annexed to Avon on 27 May 1914, another portion from Shire of Maffra on 2 May 1917 and a second portion from Bairnsdale on I Oct 1964. Small sections of Avon were annexed to City of Sale in 1966 and 1967.

The Shire of Maffra formed when it ceded from the Shire of Avon in Oct 1875. Part annexed to the Shire of Avon 2 May 1917.
There are two shire histories: Maffra: the History of the Shire to 1975 by Doris Kemp, and Macalister Landscapes: History and Heritage in the Shire of Maffra edited by Richard Aitken.
Rate Books: Maffra Shire is included in the Avon Shire Rate Books for 1869-c. 1874, which are held at the Public Record Office at Laverton. Rate books from the start of the shire in 1875 are held at the shire's Yarram service centre. The Minute Books have been microfiched up to 1900 and a copy is held at the Maffra Library.

Created a District 26 Feb 1869 and proclaimed a Shire on 17 Feb 1871. A section was annexed from Alberton Shire to Rosedale on 20 May 1914. In the local government restructure in the 1990s, the area east of Sperm Whale Head (Rotamah Island, Ocean Grange and Boole Poole) were included in East Gippsland Shire. An area including Toongabbie was included in La Trobe Shire.

City of Sale (including Wurruk)
Surveyed as Flooding Creek in 1848, the Borough of Sale was proclaimed in 1863. Proclaimed
a City in May 1950. Part of the Shire of Avon was annexed to Sale in 1966 and 1967.
