A number of institutions in Gippsland hold copies of newspapers relating to Gippsland.
This list details many of these holdings, based on an article in Gippsland Heritage
Journal no.12 (1992)
pp 54-55.
Details of any additional holdings in Gippsland would be appreciated. Please forward details to kapana@netspace.net.au
This list does not include holdings not held in Gippsland. So, for example, the two newspapers that had a brief life at Heyfield, and the one that had an even briefer life at Lindenow, are not listed here, even though they are held at the State Library.
The majority of the newspapers listed are also held in the LaTrobe Collection, State Library of Victoria. A full list of all known published newspapers for Gippsland has been published in Newspapers in Australian Libraries: A Union List. Part 2. Australian newspapers published in Canberra by the National Library of Australia. An article on Gippsland newspapers by Liz Morrison was published in GHJ no. 6 (1988).
An online index including issues of several Gippsland newspapers can be found at http://www.oldnewscopy.com. If you locate an entry within that index, you may obtain the article yourself (local library, etc), or a commercial copy service is available at that site.
Using this List
The list that follows is firstly by town, and then by newspaper. Once the appropriate paper has been noted it is followed by a date range, the form in which that date range is held (microfilm or bound copies) and the institution which holds that date range. For example, the first listing is:
Bairnsdale Advertiser 14.2.1882-24.12.1940 m: 8
This means the Bairnsdale Advertiser is held on microfilm from 14.2.1882 to 24.12.1940 at the East Gippsland Historical Society.
Please note that the date range given here only refers to the run of newspapers held by
the collecting organisations. It often reflects when newspapers commenced publication, but
may not refer to when they ceased.
