Albert Norman "Tarzan" Edwards
(1915-1996)

Albert Norman Edwards was known as Tarzan to the local people of Menindee. Norm was a
very well known person who lived on the Darling River for most of his life. He was the son
of Thomas and Mary Agnes (Creager) Edwards. Thomas came to Australia from Grimstad in
Norway in 1895. He was a well known fisherman and had the riverboat 'Daisy'. The family
lived at the Pamamaroo Bridge, situated not far from the township of Menindee. Norm, as a
young man built a 100 ft tower made from timber given to him by the locals who also
supplied the ropes. Norm was a trapeze artist and a circus man. He would entertain many
locals on different occasions in the 1930s. He was a contortionist and a very strong
person. He later travelled with a circus and spent some time in Wilcannia and Bourke
before going to Darwin in 1942.
Norm was in Darwin during the second world war and was there when Darwin was being bombed.
Hilda Holmes (Edwards) who was a sister to Norm was one of the entrants in the Miss Broken
Hill Competition, held in 1936.
The Menindee Cemetery
Norman Edwards with his family are buried in the cemetery at Menindee.
Thomas Edwards died 26th February 1942 aged 64 and is buried with his wife Mary Agnes
Edwards, died 20th March 1954 aged 77 years.
