- Miss Huldah Thoreson gave an entertained at her school
in Sweden Coulee Saturday evening. The school-room was well filled
and a splendid programme was rendered. The most interesting part
was a dialogue in which Alfred Thoreson acted as an old

- Mrs. E. Evenson and son Palmer of Volga, S.D. came Monday to
attend the funeral of her sister Mrs. Sven Thoreson.

Mrs. Sven Thoreson died Saturday morning Feb. 9, at her home in
Long Coulee of diabetes. She was 63 years 4 mo and 2 days of age.
She leaves a husband two sons and one daughter, Charles, and Alfred
and Mrs. Hans Hjermstad of N. Dak.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at the home at
1 o'clock by Rev. Turmo and at the Halfway church at 3 o'clock
conducted by Rev. Berrum with A.E. Smith in charge. The funeral was
very largely attended and many beautiful flowers were contributed
by friends of the deceased. The pall bearers were John Holly, Carl
Helgeson, Chas Anderson, Ole Brudahl, Peter Ruud, and Bernt Skogan.
The interment was made in the Halfway cemetery.

Sever[sic] Thoreson died Friday afternoon Feb. 28 of pneumonia after
an illness of about two weeks. He was 74 years and 6 months of age
and leaves two sons and one daughter as follows; Charles at home,
Theodore[sic] of the firm of A. O. Jostad & Company and Mrs. Hans
Hjermstad of Lakota, S.D. His wife preceded him in death about a year
ago. He was a highly esteemed citizen and his death is mourned by the
community.
The funeral services were held Tuesday March 2 at one o'clock in
the afternoon from the home and from the church at Halfway at 2:30
Rev. Berrum conducting and undertaker A.E. Smith in charge of the
arrangements. The pall bearers were Carl Halgerson, Peter Rund, Ole
Brudah, B.J. Skogen, S. Halverson and C.E. Anderson. The services
were largely attended. The interment was made in the Halfway

Mrs. H.A.J. Hjermstad died Sept. 3 at her home in Lakota, N.D., of
tuberculosis after an illness lasting about 6 months. The funeral was
held from her former home in Halfway and interment was made in the
Halfway cemetery Monday afternoon. Rev. Turmo of West Salem
officiated Rev. Reque of Spring Prairie, Wis., spoke in English and
Rev. Vik of La Crosse and Rev. Chris. Hjermstad of New Lisbon also
spoke.
Mrs. Hjermstad was 31 years old and leaves her husband and two
little daughters one aged 2 years and the other 3 months. She also
leaves two brothers, Alfred and Carl Thoreson of Holmen. She was
married three years ago the past July and with her husband
immediately moved to Washburn, N.D. where they lived about a year and
from there they moved to Lakota.
Beautiful flowers were very numerous at the funeral showing how
well she was regarded in her home community.
The Pall bearers were C.P. Wall, E.C. Wall, Theodore Helgeson,
Oscar Helgeson, A.O. Jostad and Oscar Liebakken. A.E. Smith of
Onalaska was in charge.

1910
- Charley Thoreson and Myrtle Granum visited with Hiram
Sacia at Council Bay Saturday.

A.B. Thoreson of Jostad Co's store and Miss Lillian
Sacia were married New Years day, Saturday afternoon, by Rev.
Vik at the parsonage in La Crosse. They were attended by Theodore
Halgeson and Miss Hulda Sjolander. The couple returned to Holmen
and on Sunday a large reception was given for the happy pair at
the home of the brides parents Mr. and Mrs. H.G. Sacia in Council
Bay. The bride and groom left this Thursday for a trip through
the west and on their return will begin house keeping in Holmen.
Both are well known and highly esteemed young people and have the
best wishes of a large circle of friends on their voyage through
life.
A parcel shower for Miss Lillian Sacia was given by
her sister Mrs. B.O. Wall at her home Tuesday evening and proved
an interessing[sic] and delightful social occasion for the
company.

1948
Alfred B. Thoreson, Leading Holmen Citizen, Passes Away
Alfred B. Thoreson, prominent citizen of the community, where he
was in the mercantile business for nearly a half century, passed away
Friday evening at his home, after an illness of nearly three months.
He was 73 years of age.
He was born February 23, 1875, a son of the late Sven and Martha
Granum Thoreson, whose home was in the Maple Shade community. He was
baptized by the Rev. U.C.S. Hjermstad.
Mr. Thoreson took a business course in Madison and in 1902
accepted employment in the Sjolander general store in Holmen. After
the property was purchased by A.O. Jostad, he became a stockholder
and president of the company at his death. He was married to Miss
Lillian Sacia, January 1, 1910, and the couple always resided in
Holmen, where they erected a residence in 1917. Mr. Thoreson resigned
a few years ago as treasurer of the Holmen Lutheran church after
having held the position continuously for 35 years. A large Bible was
the gift of the congregation to him upon his retirement from the
office.
Mrs. Thoreson survives him together with their four children,
Leone, Mrs. Stanley Roberts; Marjorie, Mrs. Arlan Lee; Lillian, Mrs.
Russell Lee; and Russell Thoreson. Eight grandchildren and a brother,
Carl Thoreson also survive. All are of Holmen. A sister, Huldah, wife
of the Rev. Hans Hjemstad[1], died in 1908.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Kenneth R. Torvik, on
Wednesday afternoon with prayer at the home preceding rites at the
Holmen Lutheran curch. Pall bearers were Wendell Wall, Melvin Ekern
and Dr. O.C. Olsen. Burial was in the Halfway Creek cemetery.

Carl Thoreson
HOLMEN, Wis. - (Special) - Funeral Services for Carl Leonard Thoreson, 77, who died suddenly Friday at his home in Holmen, were held Monday at the Holmen Lutheran church, the Rev. Kenneth R. Torvik officiating. Burial was in the Halfway Creek cemetery.
He was born at Holmen July 21, 1871, and spent his entire life in the community. He
was the son of Sven Thoreson, who was born in Sweden, and Martha Granum, a native of
Norway.
The second son of a family of seven children, four of whom died in early childhood, he
was the last survivor of his family. He lived on the home farm in the Maple Shade community
until it was sold in 1912. He then moved to Holmen to make his home with a brother, Alfred
Thoreson, and his family.

Long Resident of Holmen Dies Suddenly
Carl Leonard Thoreson died suddenly in Holmen Friday afternoon at the age of 7 years
and 6 months. His father, Sven Thoreson, a native of Sweden, came to America in his youth,
as did his mother, Martha Granum, who was born in Norway. Married in the sixties by the
Rev. J. B. Frick, first regular pastor at Halfway, they were the parents of seven children,
only three of whom grew to maturity. Two died the same day during a diphtheria epidemic.
Carl, the second son, born July 21, 1871, was the last survivor of the family. Their home
in Sweden Coulee was opposite the Maple Shade School. He was baptized by Rev. Frick, and
confirmed July 4, v1886 by the Rev. O. C. O. Hjort, in a class of 48, of whom five, Mrs.
Celia C__sen, Mrs. L. C. Larson, May_ Berg, Lars Hemma and Ma__ Stephenson are still
residents of Holmen.
Mr. Thoreson continued to reside on the farm until it was sold in 1912, when he came to Holmen.
He made his home here with the Alfred Thoreson's for ___ years.
His survivors are a nephew Russel Thoreson, and five nieces, Mrs. S. W. Roberts, Mrs. Arlan
Lee and Mrs. Russell Lee, of Homen; Signe Hjerstad[1], Everett, Wash.; and Mrs. Martha
Cederberg, of Vienna, Austria.
Three deaths within 18 months in the family were those of his mother in 1907, his father,
early in 1908, and his sister, Hulda, wife of the Rev. Hans Hjermstad, later that year. His brother
Alfred Thoreson died June 25, 1948.
Funerel services held Monday afternoon from the Holmen Lutheran Church were conducted
by the Rev. Kenneth R. Torvik, with undertaker, Conrad Jostatd, n charge. Pallbearers were
Henry, Melvin and Orris Granum, three cousins, and Oluf L. Skoy. The soloist was Orrin
Evenson and the organist, Mrs. Luella Skogen.
Interment was in the Halfway Creek Cemetery.
