Introduction to years of MATLOCK FAMILY Research Efforts
A researcher for over 30 years, Melba Duckles WOOD's book "My Maternal Ancestors II" forms the "basic foundation" for the following document on the Matlock Family History. Many other sources of information, large and small are included here, mostly just as it comes to my attention, Winiford S. Bailey.
My intention is to get and assimilate all the available Matlock material possible between two covers, to aid in further research. There are many errors, and much guess work, and often no proof. The Matlock Story is still being discovered, revised and growing. There are as many conflicting versions of the early Matlock history, as there are leaves on the old mute oak, read, enjoy and research. The more solid foundation of this family history begins with Moore MATLOCK, some say his father is William. Melba says she could not make that connection work and feels he is possibly the son of no. 1. John MATLOCK, Jr. WSB. - 1991 and 1999
Use this information as a starting point ..... I. WSB, have not tried to prove anything, I have just recorded what I received.
To assist you in making connections, I have in the index, Church, Bible, Cemeteries, Compiler, Genealogy, Document, Location, State And Counties, War, and Vocation, etc.

"MATLOCK " ...comes from "OLD ENGLISH MUTE OAK" meaning hugh oak tree under whose limbs the clans gathered for justice and punish-ment, to divide the spoils of war etc. Such a tree was in Derby-shire and a village that is now MATLOCK. Our ancestor moved from that village 8 miles down the road to one called Cropwell Bishop where he was called de Matlock (or from Matlock)
There are old church records listing Henry de Matlock, Maude de Matlock, John de Matlock and Edward de Matlock. About 1650-1660 John Matlock came to the New World in order to worship as a Quaker and he and other Quakers formed a village in New Jersey. He had a son William and I found William in Virginia still a Quaker at a Wedding of the daughter of a French family. A Hannah Moore was also among the guests and she was later kicked out of the Quaker meetings.
William had a son Moore an established planter in Virginia before the revolution. He was a slave holder but for some reason he sold his plantation during and after the war and moved to Tenn., along with his son Zack. They settled on Boone's Creek in Tenn. and from there the sons and daughters scattered about the mid-west. Zackariah and wife are buried in Tenn. My [Ann Matlock WIRFS] records claim Zack's wife as Eady PRICE or perhaps STRANGE.
