MARIE MATLOCK HARRIS's STORY
"Once upon a Time".. a large group of researchers were studying and developing the MATLOCK genealogy : Jesse ARMSTRONG, Melba WOOD, Edgar L. MATLOCK, Helen ____, Tonie MATTHEW, Lawrence ____, and Marie Matlock HARRIS, being one of them. All are gone now, even Marie, as I am told .... died May 27th, 1995. I have known her for little over a year, and she was very ill and nearly blind all that time.
This group represents years and years of research, Melba WOOD and Marie HARRIS alone represents over 60 years.
In the far West, Washington and Oregon, Lois EBERT, Namoi HAACKE and Marilyn Matlock PRICE have been searching and recording the family history, of both groups Marilynn and Lois are still active. Probably the last of the old guard. I Winiford S. BAILEY, a self-appointed family historian, received 3 or 4 letters from MARIE HARRIS. between Apr 1994 and May 1995 ... & we had one or two phone calls.

From Marie ......
I wish I could afford the new hand held "Copier' that lets you copy documents into the computer, but since I can't copy in my documents ... I tried to tell you where they are located. As I said I am almost blind and to look up and copy all of these printed parish, land-tax & slave documents ... Not sure I could ever do it.
George MATLOCK, Derbyshire, England m. Jane HALL, 7 Nov 1636/38, Cropwell Bishop parish, near Matlock, England, from Old Giles Parish records
[Note from Marie HARRIS: It is my belief that not all USA MATLOCK's descend from William MATLOCK, son of George MATLOCK and Jane HALL!
The parish records in England list John MATLOCK as their son, b. 1638 - married 1657 and came to America in 1677.]
"I believe the John MATLOCK showing in New Kent Co. Va. to be the John on board the ship "GRIFFITH" 1677-- I also believe him to have been in James City Co. (Shire)
I have the tax record of the John who died in Louisa Co. Va. 1785
NOTE: wife Hanna HORNER ! (1785, names son Zachriah, dau Elizabeth SHELTON, wife of David SHELTON ) Also see his will, Estate Verdue sale in that Co. Will in Louisa Co.> 1767- John MATLOCK, Sr. Slave, Phylis- Poll John MATLOCK, Jr. -Poll- (3) this shows that John, Sr. had son John and son Zach ?
1768 John Matlock, Sr. & John MATLOCK, Jr. and 1 black, Phillis- (3)
1769 John MATLOCK, Sr. & John MATLOCK, Jr. & 1 black, Phillis- (3)
1770 & 1771 same as 1767 & 1769- but in 1772 shows only - John MATLOCK and the slave, Phillis- (Poll 2)
1772 1773 John MATLOCK- slave Phillis- (Poll 2)
1774 1775- The picture changes; Suddenly John Jr. shows a son over age 16, Zachariah MATLOCK- same slave, Phillis- (3) [Zachariah married Lucy WASH ]
1781 John MATLOCK- slave Phills-2-, this John died 1785, listing Elizabeth and Zachariah as his children --- But this takes some thought! What should we make of this ?
There were 2 John MATLOCK's in New Kent Co. Parrish records. They show children baptized on dates that prove they were 2 different men.
The John MATLOCK, (father, of Zachriah, husb. of Emily PAINE) died 1785 in Louisa Co. (May still have been Hanover Co. )
[Melba WOOD's says that this Zachriah was never in Louisa Co. Va. That he and the one who m. Lucy WASH were cousins. Also see Lucy's bible records. WSB]
The 1. John MATLOCK of New Kent Co. 1689 can't be the John in N.J. 1730-- 1708-9, surveyor of Road Work in St. Paul's Parrish -- 1711- Overseer of Precinct --- 1721, clearing road, Hanover Co. ---- 1704 Tax in New Kent Co. -->mmh> this John did live to be over age 90.
I have John MATLOCK, b. early 1730's-- married 1756 to Juda WITT (Douglas Reg) They were living next to her father on the Dann River and show on the tax list for 1762 --- shown baptizing 2 sons- John and Jessie & dau. Juda. (Douglas Reg.)
Do you have any document proving William MATLOCK m. Elizabeth WITT ? [No .... I do not. Sorry to say most of my informents are like Marie HARRIS, so up in years and poor health, they cannot dig through their boxes of material for me. WSB]
I (Marie HARRIS) have all of the books in print on the Hanover, Louisa, Fredricksville parishes. I think there are 5 or 6 of them.
John (Sr. ?) is the one baptizing William in 1702
John MATLOCK, Jr. shows baptizing sons George 1701, Thomas, 1702
John MATLOCK b. baptized 1638 m. 1st Ann SOUTH, 1657, Muskham England; Ann dies in New Kent Co. Va.; m. 2nd Margaret ... either 1699 or 1700 - by the 2nd wife, he has baptized one son, William MATLOCK
John age 39, left England 1677, after 20 years of marriage, personally paid for his family's passage on the ship "Griffin" to West N.J. There were/are NO, transportation "headright"
John and Ann had several children (passably 8, some could have been adults) with them upon reaching American soil, exactly how many or their names, have not been found. Marie, firmly believes that the MATTOX's etc. in New Kent Co.; and Goochland & New York Co.'s were some of the children. She also thinks that Hester WATSON's first husband was one the children.

Sally SEBERT, received this in person from Marie Matlock HARRIS, April or May 1995, Pema, Az. (Marie d. 27 May 1995)
Two MATLOCK Brothers (full or half brothers ? ) Sailed from England:
Robert MATLOCK _______________
John & Ann MATLOCK 1657 on the KENT (boat) 1655 on the GRIFFITH into W. New Jersey, Va.
Both settled in New Kent County, Va. This later became part of North Carolina. Had a son Robert Matlock Jr. John was Clerk of Court of 1703 or 4, in New Kent Co. Va. high Beaufort Dist. until his mysterious death, 1733
(Sally wasn't given much on Robert's line as John is Marie HARRIS's line.)
William and Eunice THURSTON b. 1811 in North Carolina (Marie HARRIS's great great grandparents)
George MATLOCK b. in Indiana; m. 4 times; 3rd wife, Sarah HUME (?) Marie's great grandmother
Levi Ferdinard MATLOCK, (H.H. PENNINGTON, Marie's grandparents
Levi Edgar MATLOCK amd Cath DOUGHERTY (her family came from Ireland , eventually Cherokee Blood was added.)
Marie stated that she and Melba descended from John and Ann MATLOCK. Moore MATLOCK- wife, Jane POWELL ..... this Moore descends from John and Ann also, Moore's son Zachariah, is Melba's ancestor and that of ours, the " RINEHART/BAILEY" line.
+++++
Also from Marie, from another angle:
Marie MATLOCK HARRIS's genealogy:
dau of Edgar Levi MATLOCK / or Levi Edgar MATLOCK and Cath Eliz DAUGHERTY
son of Levi F. MATLOCK and (Wife) H.H.PENNINGTON
son of George W. MATLOCK and (Wife) Sarah Emma HULME b. N.C., ... b. N.Y.
son of William MATLOCK and (Wife) Eunice THURSTON b. 1811, Buncombe Co., North Carolina Sheriff of Buncombe Co. N.C., left Va. without paying tax
William is related to the SWAIN's of N.C. They went to Ill. together. By 1880 Nathan SWAIN with son, George W. and daughter, Frances, were living in the home of Marie's Gr. Gr. grandfather, William MATLOCK.
William is related to WEST, TABOR, EWAIN, FULKERSON, TAYLOR, WADDLE (WADDELL), SETTLES and many others, NOBLE, THURSTON, and COOKSEY.
Marie says that on the 1820 - 1830 census there are 2 men with sons that are of age to belong to Marie, as father of her William.
Regarding the MATLOCK LEGEND ...
This legend was received from the Caswell Branch of the MATLOCK's here in Oregon. [The legend is in section two of this document]
Marie HARRIS says .... Someone doesn't know their history of Tenn. MMH. ( Remember ... time erodes and colors facts)
Marie claims to be of this same branch ..... The CASWELL BRANCH
Marie MATLOCK HARRIS, is of the CHEROKEE TRIBE, on her mothers side of the family.
Tennessee belonged to the Cherokee's -- North Carolina bought the Tenn. Cherokee Lands, to the Wilderness Road (only) It almost Bankrupt N.C. - this, she claims, wasn't done early enough for the walk from New England or Virginia N.C. (nee" Tenn.)
The MATLOCK family isn't to be found in Tenn. --- until after the Rev. War. But of course a part of what became Tenn. was in the boundery of N.C. ie.:Wash. Dist.- ec
Marie HARRIS has tried for most of her life to trace the family from Western N.J. to Va. to try and learn when, how and why the MATLOCK's got from Western N.J. to Va. She had no problem with the trip from England to West NJ; but from there to Va. was a problem she never solved to her satisfaction.
John MATLOCK was (with out doubt) in Va. as early as 1689. New Kent Co. was taken from York Co. It seems to me [Marie] that John of York Co. (York- became Hyde/Beaufort) never moved when New Kent Co. was taken from YORK. I would have to hunt a week, probably to find the book; "Formation of N.C. Perish's & County's.
William's father was one "John MATLOCK". William was born in New Kent Co. which was formed from York Co., Beaufort & Hyde Co. Perishes/Counties are formed from these Co.'s ... York & New Kent.
William MATLOCK: Goochland Co. "sold land he had inherited"; from whom ? (see my Manuscript .. pg. 3 WSB) Was this land some that "John MATLOCK", that died 1732, Beaufort Co. Clerk of Co. Court; owned ? I haven't checked there land records, perhaps they could tell us his wife's name or maybe who his father was.
It could be that this John MATLOCK is the father of William ... the John Sr. & his 2nd wife, baptizing a son William in New Kent Co. 1702. The owner of the land William inherited ... "this could be one added piece of information, thereby making a fact!" I wish I had the "document" that calls "William WITT, William MATLOCK's bro-in-law"!
John MATLOCK did marry Juda WITT, 1755! She was a dau of John WITT! They were listed on the tax records of the Dan RIVER 1762; became Rockingham Co. and we do have "Old Sargt. John MATLOCK. b/1753, as the Sheriff of that Co. for 26 Yrs." He m. 2nd Mary SETTLES! How are these two John MATLOCK's related ?
I have all her books! If I can last long enough I will write "Mrs. HOFFMAN" and see if she can help. MMH
[I do not know of a Mrs. HOFFMAN WSB]
Sheriff of Buncombe Co. N.C. Left Va. without paying Tax. This William MATLOCK, the TABOR & SWAIN Families of Buncombe Co. went to Ill.
William is found in Ill. in 1834, he may be related to the MATLOCK's of Indiana or Missouri MATLOCK's of 1839.
John KNOX to America is of my DOUGHERTY line - His widows family Ecp SHO -- son, Rowan Co. --
The Cubb Creek Church seems to have been a catch all for the immagrants to Pa. before 1720.
In England, the MATLOCK name wasn't spelled MATLOCK most of the time .... MADOCK - MEDLOCK - but the MATLOCK spa. does (did) exist. In calling it Wales, you are talking about the "MATLOCK Island; Honey Moon Island", which is a part of Australia.
We are of the Royal split IN THE ROYAL FAMILY OF OL' BLOODY QUEEN MARY OF SCOTTS ! When we came to America so did the SPENCERS, PRINCESS Di's FAMILY. The SIR THOMAS RHOADES FAMILY, along with others. But in England the MATLOCK's were with the (in with the royalty). I found a request, court document, to the royal family for redress on some matter.
Nicholas MATLOCK, (I claim as my line !?) was one of Overtons "QUEENS RANGERS" 1755, Hanover Co. (Louis Co. ?) Applied for land on his service, when the law was passed that it could be done! About 1780 ? He is the older Nicholas of Rowan (Burke Co. N.C.) Tax Record of 1762/82 - which is extant. This isn't the Nicholas of Caswell Co. Melba WOOD, I believe traces her line to the Nicholas of Caswell Co.
[So this is where Marie and Melba split (according to MARIE) ... Marie with the Burke Co. Nicholas ... and Melba with the Caswell Co. Nicholas. BUT as I recall, Melba never mentions a Nicholas MATLOCK in her line. WSB ]
NICHOLAS of Rowan Co. 1757 land records; is the first MATLOCK I find in N.C. (discounting the John MATLOCK of BATH & HYDE & Beaufort Co. Clerk of Co. court til his death in 1732. Nicholas of Rowan Co. is the father of Richard MATLOCK, also the father of 3 sons or 4 sons born in Va. Hescott of Rowan Co. is his oldest son. Hescott was the father of Issac. 1768- Hescott MATLOCK (son of Nicholas, b. Va.) had son, Stephen, son Issac & several girls.
Nicholas MATLOCK of Caswell Co. (Not same as Nicholas of Granville & Burke Co.'s) d. 1824. On the 1768 Granville Co. Tax - Nicholas MATLOCK- John, Henry, Nathaniel
Received from Marie HARRIS in 1994, (her 3rd letter)
... John had:
Father of Nicholas of N.C. before 1750
father of Isham - this would appear brother of Moore, Sr. born @ 1714- son of ? Who ? has to be John from England ? or one of the sons born in England.
Nicholas MATLOCK m. by 1720 ? known sons:
Hescott, b. Va. --- had sons Samuel and Issac
Nathaniel b. Va. 1742 ...d. in Ky.
Elijah (Eli) sold land same time as Nathaniel before 1780.
Henry b. Va. ... to Ill. ? 1820
John b. Va. .. son Stephen ... died in Burke Co.
Richard b. N.C. 1761
Nathaniel, Jr. born N.C. see 1790 census Burke Co.
{ two sons ...
... not accounted for}

MEMBERS of this family came to Oregon along with RINEHARTS [Marie claims a relationship to both the Matlock's and the Rinehart's involved. WSB]
From Marie as dictated to Sally SEBERT, Apr or May 1995
There were three brothers, William, Cog (not same one as in Missouri) and the 3rd one unkown, these along with others including some RINEHARTS, came west and settled in the 4 Peaks area --- Heppner, Or. William was appointed (by President LINCOLN) to collect taxes. He had a store that was still in Heppner when Marie left -- Marie heard it was partially burned down. Heppner was very remote - only reachable by foot or water no roads. There was a big flood in Heppner and one of the three MATLOCK brothers children rode ahead to warn people and saved many lives. Marie's Aunt - her Fathers Sister Nora, lived in Oregon. (there was another Nora in the family, also in the North West.)

Bessie MATLOCK -b. 1828 .... died young
Joseph MATLOCK -b. 1 Mar 1839
* This hasn't been resolved to suite me. This Edward Lane MATLOCK was supposed to have been named for his mothers father; - Judge Edward LANE who went with the MATLOCK's to the Oregon Territory and became Oregon's first Judge. He is the grandfather of Edward Lane MATLOCK who came to Oregon in 1852. [This may be an interesting subject for study ... is LANE COUNTY named for Judge LANE ? ... not that I can discover ... also we have other LANE's on the RINEHART tree, any connection ? MMH & WSB]
This family is related to: Louis Corbin, Richard, Oscar, and Robert MATLOCK that went to Cowlitz Co. Washington from Ill. in the fall of 1876. Other children in this family: Alice, Charlie, Noley, Agnes, and Alfred MATLOCK .
Caswell MATLOCK no. 3, son of John MATLOCK and Mary MERRICK (dau of Rachel MERRICK). Became a Mormon 1828, before Book of Mormon was printed 1830 - I [Marie] have his "School of Prophets" "7 Lectures in Faith"- and the 1830 edition Book of Mormon.
When the Mormons left Ill. & Mo. ... The MATLOCK brothers, the PROFFIT, DEAN and RINEHART families came too .... but went on to Or. Terr. ... Edward Lane MATLOCK was of this family. I have so much material on these lines ... but like all the rest of my material ... not tied together.. nor in order. MMH
The RINEHART, PROFFITT, WEST, THURSTON, TABOR line ...found Green Co. Mo. from N.C. ...see sale of land to John TABOR Fredrickville Parish.
The John MATLOCK (son of George & Jane MATLOCK) Debershire, Eng. (I believe) is the MATLOCK of the Va. -N.C.- Ill. MATLOCKS .. that the RINEHART's - PROFFITT - SWAIN Families --- are mine .... I have SWAIN & RINEHART's in America very early ! MMH

Marie asks if we have seen the Old MATLOCK Trading Post in the 7 Peaks area or do we know Howard RICKETTS of Oregon or corresponded with him ? I haven't and I do not. Howard has lines in common with Marie, her MATLOCK's and PADDINGTON's. As well as being related to Marie, she says his Nora MATLOCK and her Nora MATLOCK do not seem to be the same person. However both Nora MATLOCK's went to Oregon Terr. and Marie still claims a line to the Terr.
Elijah SMITH of Cayuga Co. N.Y. m. Sussan FOLLETT, had issue: Roxena SMITH m. 1818 to John WEST, had issue: Mary WEST m. to Samuel FENTON, Ranselear WEST m. Deborah AUSTIN, Lyman WEST, b. 1824 m. Emeline RINEHARDT (RINEHART) - dau of Peter RINEHART and Betty ZIMMERS (ZIMMERMAN) William MATLOCK, b. 1811 N.C.; gave mothers place of birth as N.Y. on the 1850 census.
[Over the phone Marie told me she did have a card file, so she isn't all that disorganized, we must remember Marie and the other early researchers started out long before the invention of computers. WSB]
Marie HARRIS believes there are at least two Moore MATLOCK's leading up to the Moore MATLOCK that marries Jane POWELL.
MOORE was b. in Goochland Co. Va. (Marie had no proof of this). Moore MATLOCK inherited land on Pole Cat Creek, Halifax Co. Va. from Jane (POWELL's) father. This cabin he started for his family to live in, was never finished. I think this land is the land Zach. (their first son) seems to have bought.
[Note: Zach's dau Ann m. Ezekial ELLIS, their dau Elizabeth m. Lewis RINEHART, our family, the RINEHART/BAILEY connection. WSB]
The 1783 tax records: Zach. MATLOCK had as GOD PARENT - James RANSOM. (Edward POWELL's wife was the dau of a James RANSOM)
1777 - deed to 100 acres of land from Moore MATLOCK - price was 1 shilling token payment. (This was the land inherited from Edward POWELL, it lay on Pole Cat Creek. Moore had started a cabin on the land, never finished before selling to Zach. 1787 - Zach. MATLOCK sold to Keeble TERRY for 75 lbs.
1782 - 85 - Halifax Co. Tax list shows Zach. MATLOCK
1794 - Zach. MATLOCK purchased 150 acres of land in Wash. Co. Tenn. (This land did lay in what was N.C.) [Look for my papers showing a John ELLIS in this area of early N.C. WSB]
Zach. MATLOCK shows on the Wash. Co. Ten. tax list for the years 1814 - 1819.
[The information I have on the descendants of Moore and Jane (POWELL), is undisputed as far as Marie is concerned ... her main interest was in the very early years, same for Brenda Avila and and Jana Black. WSB]
RANSOM/ POWELL
James RAMSOM of Va. [Received from Stephen PIPITONE, Sept.1996] dau. Elizabeth, ca 1700, m. c 1726 Edward POWELL, in Prince George Co. Va. in Bristol Parish.
Edward POWELL (1700-1773) of Antrim Parish, Va.
They had seven Children:
William POWELL
Mark POWELL
Thomas POWELL, b. 14 Jul 1727
Jane POWELL, b. 1731 ... m. 1.1.5. Moore MATLOCK
Mary POWELL, b. 1733 ... m. John TUCK
David POWELL, b. 1738
Luke POWELL, b. 1746
From Marie also
( English Legend/law says .. first son receives the Fathers given name, in this case John. The wife passes on her surname to the second son .... thus John MATLOCK and wife, (____ MOORE) would have a 1st son John MATLOCK and a 2nd son ... Moore MATLOCK.)
[The following item showes a James RANSOM in Alabama ... could he be James RANSOM above? Did he come from or go to Alabama ?????]

Marie MATLOCK HARRIS has the bible of JOHN MATLOCK, of Lee Co. Va. ---He was the son of David, son of William, son of John MATLOCK, of New Kent Co. Va.
Oaths of allegiance in Henry Co. Va.:
MATLOCK, John, 1777, Henry Co. Va. - Oaths of Allegiance
MATLOCK, David, 1777, Henry Co. Va. - Oath of Allegiance
MEDLOCK, John & John, Jr. 1777, Henry Co. Va. - Oath of Allegiance
Who is this John and Jr. ? ->> Melba WOOD states they went to S.C. if so: John, Sr. - would not be the son of David.
MATLOCK, John & James, Jr., 1777 Henry Co. Va. - Oath of Allegiance to old to be son's of David ?? -- could John, Sr. be a son of William and a brother of David ? Sure needs work !!!
