John MEDLOCK - St. Peters Parish. Record 1689
Because of the involvement of the HENDERSON Family with the early MATLOCK's in America; I'm listing what I find on that line.
James HENDERSON - Pamamuck Neck, St. Peters Parish - Council held at James City, Oct 18, 1689 for determination of ye' differences between Blissland Parish & St. Peters Pr. in New Kent Co. Va. ..... agreed on when ... Blissland Pr. was divided ... dividing line begins at ye'mountain of a creek called Capt. Bassets Landing & Run from thence to Capt. Joseph FOSTER ..... Jan 5 1695-6 - Thos. WINGFIELD, (see wit. to deed from John MATLOCK to son George & dau Mary JOHNSON, Hanover Co. Va. 1733) -- David CRAWFORD ... clothing for Rich. BOWE, wounded by the Indians. Capt Nathaniel WEST (1703) -- 1704, Thomas HENDERSON -- Thomas HENDERSON, son of James HENDERSON, b. Jan 1715.
John MATLOCK, Sr.'s wife died 1699 [Ann SOUTH ?] came to America on the ship Griffin ... I have this John in the James City Parrish to Blissland Parrish as early as 1689. Which I see in the split of the parishes-> this John (Sr.? ) is named in the split & establishment of the parrish, names him. (and this is why & where I have connected the Hanna WATSON, dau of William WATSON that died in 1689, naming his dau (called Hannah MEDLOCK, later married Mark ANTHONY & who sold the land left by her father to Hannah MEDLOCK (nee/WATSON) this John MEDLOCK, (Jr. ??) 1699 - 1704 in the New Kent Co. Records. 1725 Louisa Co. Land Records --- who is the John that died and his will is in the Beaufort/Hyse Co. records 1733. I [Marie] believe he is John (Sr.) & John of Louisa/Hanover Co. is the Jr.
His name was Robert MATLOCK (MADDOCK ) Refuses to claim kin to the John MATLOCK to America 1677. 1773- Robert MATLOCK Granville Co. (Owes money to London Merchant).
The MATLOCK's of Granville Co (1761,2,3,8,ect: Who is Robert MATLOCK ? Robert MEDLOCK b/1705> see St. Peter's Records > son of John MATTOX ----- 1772 Nicholas MATLOCK, Sr. Granville Co. (owes money to London Merchant) MMH

1634- York Co. Va. Original Shire. Yorktown, N.Y.
1654- New Kent Co. Va. Formed from York Co. Va.
1689 John MEDLOCK
1689 John MEDLOCK, Land in New Kent Co.
1699 New Kent Co. Va. John MEDLOCK, Sr. > Wife Ann ... ? Died 1699-1700 John MEDLOCK, Sr. Remarries ... wife not named.
1699-1700, Mar 23, d.Ann MATLOCK, wife of John MEDLOCK
1699 John MEDLOCK, New Kent Co. Va. Wife, Anne ...? Died; 1st wife d. 1699 1699 He remarried ( this wife not named on Parrish records.
John, Jr. named on New Kent Co. Pr. records along with John above. Baptized sons, George - 1701 and Thomas- 1703. I have searched and searched New Kent Co. Va. I never found a Moore MATLOCK listed anywhere in the Co. The first place I do find him is where John deeds to son Nicholas, 100 acres Land on Bear Creek. Keep in mind that Hanover Co. Va. was set off from New Kent Co. -- Louisa Co. Va. from Hanover Co. Va.-- that Anson Co. N.C. where we find Col. Charles MATLOCK & his familly: was about the whole of N.C. and the Co. Charles is listed on every Family Group Sheet as son of George MATLOCK, son of John MATLOCK of New Kent, Co. Va. 1702. George, (father of Col. Charles) is listed in Hanover Co. Va. selling land to John, Jr. (the father of John MATLOCK, has a deed in HANOVER Co. Va. as early as 1725.
[NOTE: Edward LANE MATLOCK m. a FRY]
One other problem; you might want to consider - there are several MATLOCK's in New Kent Co. in the 1700. The name isn't spelled the same as John Sr. and John Jr. But seems obivious to me <(MMH) - they have to be the same family.
I have traced this John Jr. to Hanover/Louisa Co.'s with land records 1725. The John MATLOCK of Hyde & Beaufort Parrish and Co. Records of 1733 may be the John that died about 1732-33, with deeds to George, Mary (MATLOCK) JOHNSON, and the John MATLOCK, Jr. of the Louisa Co. Tax Records. I have traced them through the JOHNSON SLAVE RECORDS. Mary's husband, Benjamin F. JOHNSON! They are listed as the over seers of the slaves.
1699 Bath Co. N.C. discontinued 1739, Archdale formed 1705, changed to Beaufort Co. N.C. 1712

I found this information on/in Virginia Magazine
1725 John MATLOCK (MEDLOCK) - Deed-Hanover Co. Va.. mmh)> I think this is the John, Jr. of New Kent Co. Va.
1720 Hanover Co. Va. formed from New Kent Co. Va.
1731 Beufort Co. N.C. (note N.C.) John MATLOCK wit - will
1732 Will of John MATLOCK in Bath Co. N.C. - Names wife Mary ... and dau's Ann & Elizabeth. He has a son John MATLOCK, or does he ? Who is the John MATLOCK, 1733, there is a John MATLOCK who just died (1733) left a will .... then there is the John MATLOCK in York Co. Va. 1733, wit. to another will.!
1732 Sep 28- Deed from John TAYLOR, Jr. to ... Land joining John MATLOCK' line ... Edward TROUTMAN Corner- Jul 1 1735.

1733 Deed, George MATLOCK ? To John, Jr. - is this father to son -- than son back to father ?
John, Jr. died 1733 (Hyde/Beaufort, N.C.(mmh) I think this deed is from father John to son George (George died 1780 ?? -- in Louisa Co. Va. ? Then the only thing that makes sense/ George deeds land to his brother, JOHN (now John, Jr.) -- so would appear this John MATLOCK is the John, Jr.; baptized son George, son Thomas, John could he be an older son ? The youngest ? (then John, Jr. of New Kent may have had 3 sons, 1. John ?; 2. George and 3. Thomas. No one has ever worked on the son Thomas' line that I know about. I found: Thomas, with a Kings Land Grant in Craven Co. 1737
1733 Deed John MATLOCK to dau Mary JOHNSON ... this John MATLOCK <d. 1733> Could he be the John (with will in 1733) Baths Co. N.C., York Co. Va. ?? then he is John MEDLOCK, Jr. and the John MEDLOCK, Sr.; would be the father of John, Jr. (above) grandfather of George, Mary & the John, Jr. That (John, Jr. of New Kent Co. Va.) Has deed from, "John to son George" - "George to John, Jr. :brother of Mary & George) Oh! My! But where & when did John, Sr. die ??
1733 Dec. 5 .. MARK ANTHONY of St. Paul Parrish, Hanover Co. Va. and wife Hester Deed to John CLAYTON, Williamsburg, James City Co., 20 shillings - 50 acres om Mattadenquin Creek, in St. Paul Parrish, Hanover Co. Va. Part of a tract granted to one William WATSON late of James City Co. (dec'd) by Patent 1672 where by the late WATSON by his last will & Testement bearing date 15 Apr 1689 devised to said Hester, by the name of Hester MEDLOCK and to her heirs forever. Ack; by Mark ANTHONY and wife Hester, 5 Apr. 1734 [Now as to the Hester WATSON story!! Hester WATSON; indeed was married to a MATLOCK male, but who ? I found her father's will naming her as his daughter as far back as 1689. In James City parish (County). Where you can see the problem! John MATLOCK, Sr. ? He could not be her husband, as his wife died either 1699 or 1700.
1734 [Note this date !!!] Oct 1734-Deed from Henry and Mary GRAVES to John DIXON- Wit.: Moore MATLOCK; This land joins John MATLOCK. !!! Moore MATLOCK to have a legal signature would by; law; be aat least 21 years of age-> other wise, a guardian would have to handle it for him.
In New Kent Co. Va. I found a John MADDOX'MADOX, with the following children Baptized:
1702 Sept 27, Sara, dau of John MADOX
1705 Feb 25, Robert, s/o John MADDOX +++ is he the Robert of N.C. Owing money to London Merchants ???? 1707, Apr 19, Susannah, dau of John MADDOX
1719 Jan 11, William, son of John MADDOX [Before we say for sure this isn't one of our MEDLOCK' --I have to tell you that John MATLOCK that died on King' Mt. .... the scribe of who ever wrote his name, used the MATTOX spelling .. writting it --- MATL (crossing the T & L) MATTLO->then turning the C to form the back of the K == forming an X = MATLOCK = MATTOX.
I probably would not have seen what they had done; except, for the word Buckskins --- I will never know why I ordered this mans will - on which I have to tell you; his brother spelled MATLOCK 7 so was his wife' name Rachel MATLOCK & his brother Charles MATLOCK - the word BUXSKINS - used the same form of writing, the "C" to form the back of the letter "K", thus BUCKSKINS = became BUXSKINS. This John MATTOC, is the John killed in the Kings Mt. Battle. He had 2 brothers - Charles and Edward.
The above Robert, son of the John MADDOX, b. Feb 25, 1705, bears researching. In Burke Co. N.C.; I found along with Nicholas of Burke Co. ... one Robert MATLOCK. I've never seen since, it could be this Robert(mmh) I think it is. I also think this John is John, Jr., father of George, Thomas, John, Robert, William and Mary MATLOCK.
