England, In the Early years of 1940:

Edgar L. MATLOCK of Fort Smith, Arkansas was in the Village of Cropwell Bishop, which is about eight miles S.E. of the city of Nottingham, England. He found the following records in Old St. Guiles Church, erected in the 1200's, in the center of the village and it was still in use and in good preservation. These are the MatLock names recorded there:

Our Matlock family and all other Matlock families in America descend from William MATLOCK. Matlock has been spelled many ways, but where they spelled it, it was always Matlock. The Matlock's were handsome men and beautiful women. Their purity the lives of the Quaker, their steeling honesty, their strength and manliness were very impressive.

1. GEORGE MATLOCK and JANE HALL, married 7 November 1636

1.1 WILLIAM MATLOCK, son of George Matlock and Jane Hall b. 10 April 1648, Cropwell Bishop, Nottinghamshire, England d. 1728 in America

He was a Quaker by faith and came to America to escape the per-secution that was heaped upon the Quakers because of their religious faith. William MATLOCK and a party of Quaker settlers arrived in America in June 1677, on board the ship "Kent" in New Jersey. They founded the town of Burlingham, New Jersey, which is up the Delaware River. William was a carpenter and worked at his trade in the early days of the settlement. Later he became a planter and at the time of his death he owned a plantation of 1,000 acres.

m. 1st MARY HANCOCK b. 1648, Brayles, Warwickshire, England

She came to America on the ship "Paradise" in 1682. William and Mary Matlock both died in 1728. They were parents of 10 children (one name is not accounted for): John, George, William, Timothy, Joseph, Richard, Mary, Jane, Sarah.

1.1.1 JOHN MATLOCK, son of William MATLOCK and Mary HANCOCK b. 1683, Burlington, N.J. First Matlock to be born in America. John lived to be over 100 years old and died in Louisa Co.,Va. He married at least three times and had possibly 15 or 16 children.

Records from the Register of St. Peters in New Kent Co. Va. show: ANN (HANNA/HORNER) wife of John MATLOCK died March 23, 1700. (They had one son, 1.1.1.1 Isaac, b. 1700 in Gloucester Co., N.J., Baptized March 1700.)

JOHN lived in New Jersey until 1730. Then he moved to Hanover Co., Va. where he was a planter and landowner. His will mentions his surviving wife as ANNE. In 1708-9 he was a surveyor in the 39th precinct, St. Paul's Parish, Hanover Co., Va. In the year of 1711 -- John Matlock was appointed overseer of his precinct. In 1721 it was ordered that Samuel KNUCKLOS clear a road from the upper end of Matlock road to the upper inhabitants. The 1704 tax lists John MATLOCK as owning 200 acres in New Kent County, Va. In 1733 John MATLOCK deeded to his daughter Mary JOHNSON and son George some land that is recorded in Hanover Co., Va.

1.1.1.3 WILLIAM MATLOCK, son of 1.1.1 John MATLOCK and 2nd wife Mary LEE. Baptized July 19, 1702, in New Kent Co., Va. m. ELIZABETH WITT (?) about 1720 or 22

In 1734 he bought land from Martin KING in Goochland Co., Va. In 1736 he sold some land he had inherited to Robert BRUCE of Gooch-land Co., Va. In 1738 he sold land to William WITT in the same county. William WITT was his brother-in-law. In 1738 he sold land to Richard MULLINS in the same county. In 1744 he sold land to Richard BROWN in the same County. In that same year he sold land to Henry NASH in the same county. In 1752 William is in Albemarle Co., Va. In 1754 William files suite against Cornelius ROWE in Halifax Co., Va and his son, Moore MATLOCK, was their witness. In 1762 William sold land on Stonewall Creek in Bedford Co. Va. In 1769 the inventory of the estate of William MATLOCK was filed in Bedford Co., Va.

NO LIST OF CHILDREN WERE GIVEN. The children of William MATLOCK and Elizabeth WITT COULD BE: John, Richard, Moore, David, Henry, Nicholas, Samuel , and daughters .. although there is NO DEFINITE PROOF.

1.1.1.3.3 Moore MATLOCK was born 1730 in Va. (Halifax Co. or Goochland). He died in Roane, Tennessee in 1812. In 1755 he married Emily Jane POWELL, and their children were: Zachariah, born 1756 and d. 1837; Moore Jr.; Charles; Littleberry; Absolom; Luke; John; Jason; William; and possibly girls.
