JOHN MATLOCK, Sr., poss. s/o William Matlock & Mary Hancock b. --- d. 6 Jan 1718 m. 1st. ANN d. 1699 or 1700 m. 2nd. MARGARET/ Mary LEE, 1701 d. 1718 m. 3rd (?) his will says his surviving wife was ANNE.
Went from James City Co., Va. to New Kent, Co. St. Peters Parish records used.
WILLIAM MATLOCK, [pg. 23 in Melba Wood's book] (does he belong to John Sr. ?) m. CATHERINE (? KING ) called his now or new wife in 1733 in Goochland County.
[Received the following information from Lou PERO, Nov 1992.]
In Mr. Weisinger's book on Goochland Co. Va. Wills and Deeds (1736-1742) we find that William MATLOCK on 25 Mar 1738 conveyed to William WITT of same place for 1 5 pounds, 200 acres on north side of North Fork of James River. On 10 June 1738 land granted to Matlock is sold, 95 acres. This was recorded 3 Oct 1734 and mentions wife Catherine. Then, on 10 Aug 1741, William WITT of Goochland Co., conveys to son John WITT, 200 acres north side of James River, Ballenger's Creek.
William MATLOCK has a son John with wife Judah WITT. They have a son, John, Jr. Both go to Henry County and to Burke County N.C.
In the 1790 census, John MATLOCK Sr. and Jr. are in Greenville Co. S.C. Did this family go to Lurens County to Georgia and Kentucky and to Missouri ?
In 1750 Reverend William DOUGLAS started keeping a record of James Northam Parish in Goochland Co, Va. His record shows that John MATLOCK and Judah WITT were married 22 Nov 1756.
Information received from Lou (Robert) Pero, Nov. 1992 .... do not run across a mention of anyone transporting John MATLOCK, but he is mentioned in Book 12 of Land Patents. He received 400 acres of New Land in Hanover Co. which was formed from New Kent Co. in 1720. This land was adjacent to William WETHERFORD and John STANLEY and was recorded 24 Mar 1725.
In Book 14 of "Cavaliers and Pioneers" Henry GRAVES received land in Hanover Co., adjacent Major LEIGH; John SANDERS; Capt CRAW-FORD; John MATLOCK and George PEMBERTON. recorded 26 June 1731. On 11 Apr 1732, Thomas CHRISTMAS received 731 acres of Old and New Land in Hanover Co., adjacent to John LEIGH; Richard WETHER-FORD; William NOBLE, John STANLEY, George PEMBERTON, and Henry GRAVES. Four hundred acres was part granted to John MATLOCK. There are three patents listed in 1732 which were joining John MATLOCK: William NOBLES, John TYLER Jr., and Matthew JOUET.

George PAINE was a witness on a deed for William MATLOCK above, also Robert PAINE. George, b.1707 & d.1784 in Goochland Co., m. Judith BURTON, had a son Robert. I [Melba] find a Robert PAINE, b. ca 1738, Goochland Co. Va., d. 1791, Pittsylvania Co. m. Ann BURTON. A descendent of George PAINE married into the family of Lucy Jefferson LEWIS (sister of President Thomas JEFFERSON). Is this a connection of our Emily/Edith (Eady) PAINE (1.1.5.1.) ?.
Robert PAINE was a witness on a deed. I [Melba] find one Robert PAINE in Halifax County where Zachariah MATLOCK m. Emily PAINE.
I [Melba] tried to put Nicholas MATLOCK and Moore MATLOCK into the family of William MATLOCK of Goochland but they wouldn't fit.

From Lou PERO, 10 Oct 1992; Dear Winnie, The descendants of John MATLOCK were associated with the HUSLEY's and the two families stayed together for over 100 years, down through the Dan River area of N C/Va border - New Kent Co. VA., & Burke Co. N.C. during the Rev War and then into Greenville Co. S.C. by about 1785. John MATLOCK was a brother-in-law of Charles HULSEY, their wives apparently the daughters of John WITT. On 2 Jul 1756, a son, Charles, was born to Charles HUSLEY and Hannah WITT. On 1 Jul 1759, a daughter, Parthenia was born to Charles HUSLEY and Anna WITT.
[Note: Lou PERO was a non MATLOCK, but she found the above information when searching for her family history ... I wonder if the name she mentions as "HUSLEY" could possibly be "HORSLEY"?]

In 1772 John SEVIER & James ROBERTSON headed a group of settlers who formed The Watauga Association. 1773 on Christmas Day, Valentine SEVIER, Sr. came to Gap Creek, later Carter Co. Oldest settlement in Tennessee ... the north east part of Tenn. part of the Watauga settlement, then of Washington district of North Carolina, then in 1777 Washington, N.C., then part of the state of Franklin in 1785-7 and after some time and struggle became Carter Co. Tenn. Elizabethtown, was built largely on lands of Samuel TIPTON, who cut it up into lots, among the lot buyers was, William MATLOCK, ca 1786.
Note: from Veva LARGE, she got the following data from "Tennessee Cousins" (976.8 ---pg 12) William MATLOCK was among the pioneers to the Gap Creek Settlement on the Wautauga. William was on the East bank of Gap Creek. Pg. 51, At the April term in 1797, the court was held at the home of William MATLOCK, (the first house erected by him) in Elizabethtown, and thereafter met in the new Courthouse. William MATLOCK was granted licence to run an "ordinary" in 1797. Among other of the business men mentioned was a "John POWELL".[Moore MATLOCK Sr. m. Jane POWELL. Any relation?]
There were several old Forts in the vicinity of Elizabethtown and along the Watuga and Gap Creek. In the days of which we write nearly every cabin was in the nature of a fort, in defence to Indian raids. In 1776, Watuga Fort consisting of about 150 resi-dents was attacked by many Cherokee Indians. After besieging the fort for six days the attack was finely overcome by Col. Charles ROBERTSON and John SEVIER and those under them. A second Fort was built higher up the Watuga on the north side on lands owned by Valentine SEVIER.
In 1780 Tennessee soldiers under Gen. John SEVIER & Isaac SHELBY helped defeat the British at the Battle of King's Mountain. Capt. Valentine MATLOCK and several other MATLOCK's, and no doubt many of our ancestors fought in this battle. The list is short and in-complete. No or few records were kept. Some of our relatives said Zachariah MATLOCK, son of Moore, was in this battle. One of our relatives also said our Grandfather of some degree was a General ... was he Moore MATLOCK ? Also a story goes that a MATLOCK at the battle of Kings Mt. rescued a SEVIER that was taken prisoner. [pg. 27 Melba's book]

George MATLOCK returned from a long trip to find his wife, Sarah, with a new red haired baby boy ... his brother-in-law, Sam BARLOW, had red hair. In the ensuing battle George was shot and killed, Sam was held than released, he packed up his family and went west in 1843.
Sarah Lee MATLOCK remarried, John TOMPSON and also came west.
Oregon's pioneer,Samuel K.BARLOW started building the Barlow road in 1844 or 45. Samuel learned the road building business from an uncle who built roads during the civil war, Sam had several big sons to help him build the Barlow road. Sam was married to Susannah LEE or Hannah LEE,a sister of Sarah's. [Could these Lee sisters, Nancy Agnes, Sarah and Susannah be related to the early missionaries Jason LEE and his nephew.] Near the end of the Barlow Trail/Oregon Trail and connected to it's history is an old Sevier farm.
