(probably the dau of Robert PAINE - Robert is in Halifax, Goochland Co., Va. and is in Washington Co. Tn. in 1786. d. 12 April 1837. Note's From Melba: The earliest I have my Zachariah Matlock is in 1790 tax list in Capt. STONE's Company - 150 acres on Boone's Creek in 1795, Washington Co., Tn. Zachariah Matlock and Eady were in Washington Co., Tn. He died in 1837, (Seven children are listed.)
In certain legal documents Zachariah's wife is called Eady, but in the family Bible of Elizabeth Strange Matlock COFFMAN, her name is given as Emily PAINE with the date of her death recorded as above. I am indebted to Mr. James COFFMAN of Salem, Mo. for this information. There is also a statement in the back of this Bible, "We started for this Missouri on Oct. 19, 1839".
Notes from Melba WOOD: The PAINE family: George PAINE, b. 1707 and d. 1784, Goochland, Va. m. Judith BURTON. Had a son Robert PAINE. I (Melba) find a Robert PAINE, b. ca 1701 in Goochland, Va. d. 1791, Pittsylvania, Co. Va. m. 1762 Ann BURTON
It has not been my [Melba] purpose here to go back to our beginnings in Europe, but rather to draw together the loose ends of our relationships in this present generation, for the study of those who will follow us. From the work of others, credited elsewhere, and the many hours of my own study of courthouse records, census tables and cemetery inscriptions, I have compiled a brief sketch of my work in a 59 page book "My Maternal Ancestry II". In 1773 Edward POWELL died in Halifax Co. Va.leaving a wife and six children, one of them being Jane Powell MEDLOCK/MATLOCK. She and her husband Moore MATLOCK had a minor son Zachariah, who received a feather bed and bolster.
In 1777 and 1779 Moore sold 200 acres of land in Halifax Co. to Zachariah and Littleberry MATLOCK for one and five shillings.
In 1794 he deeded 150 acres of his North Carolina land grant hold- ings on Boone's Creek in Washington Co. Tn. to Zachariah in the presence of Jason, Moore Jr., and Absolom.
In 1796 Moore, Jr. was found in Jefferson Co. Tn., in 1805 in Roane Co. Tn., in 1810 when he married Lucy KNIGHT, and there he died in 1812. Jason MATLOCK was administrator of the estate. Only the inventory of his estate has been found in 1974.
All of Zachariah's and Eady's children came to Missouri from Boone's Creek Tn., in 1830, except, Ann, who married Ezekiel ELLIS. They stayed in Tennessee. The family moved in a covered wagon or Ox wagons (or carts) and settled in Marries and Phelps Counties.
In addition to Zachariah, it is believed that Moore and Jane had Littleberry, Jason, Moore Jr., and Absolom, it is also believed that there were sons named Charles, Luke, possably William and John.. No mention of any girls.
[Note: In March of 1999 I discovered Janna Darlene CRUMPTON on the Computer WWW. Com. she descends from James Jasom MATLOCK son of MOORE MATLOCK and EMILY JANE POWELL. She claims William MATLOCK is the 1st born of Moore and Emily Jane. Unfortunantly I do not know how to make contact with her... she never answered and since has left the web. WSB Jan. 2000 ]
