
Charles Lafayette Matlock in 1852 married in McMinn County Louisa Howard, uniting two notable East Tennessee families - Matlocks were early settlers in this state, this line being descended from William, born in 1795.
Members of the Matlock family were among the early settlers of upper East Tennessee, and one James Matlock served as a soldier in the Revolution with the militia from Washington County, North Carolina (Tennessee).
David Matlock's will is recorded in Washington County, Tennessee, where it was proven at the August sessions of the court in 1790. His heirs were his wife, Margaret,; sons, George, David, Gideon; daughters, Sarah, Elizabeth and Catherine.
Richard Matlock, a Revolutionary soldier, received a pension for his services under the act of 1832, in Hawkins county, Tennessee. He was born April 1761, in Granville county, North Carolina, and served with Capt. John Montgomery's company in 1779, in Col. Joseph McDowell's regiment.
Another branch of the Matlock family in East Tennessee descends form Jason Matlock, who was born July 18, 1769, in Virginia, and died Nov. 29, 1848, in Roane county, Tennessee. There are many descendants of this line in Tennesee.
The first ocurt of Carteer county, Tennessee, held in Elizabethtown, was held at the house of William Msatlock in April 1797.
The Matlock line here traced is that of William Matlock, who was a pioneer settler of McMinn "County, form information furnished by Mrs. Robert B. Helton of Chattanooga, who owns the original Bible belonging to William Matlock.

William Matlock was born April 11, 1795; died Dec, 20, 1844; married Dec. 23, 1817. SArah Matlock, his wife, was born June 14, 1795.

Charles Lafayette Matlock (6) born Nov. 29, 1829; died Jan. 20, 189-, at his home near Riceville, Tenn., married Nov. 9, 1852, in McMinn county, Louisa Howard, born Dec. 12, 1823; died 1869, McMinn county, buried at Clear Springs near the old homestead, daughter of John Rogers and Elizabeth (Steed) Howard.
After their marriage, Charles L. Matlock built for his wife a large brick house in Eastanaula valley, three and a half miles southwest of the Howard home, which was an exact replica of her father's dwelling, and in this home in Riceville, Tenn., their children were reared. Charles L. Matlock was a successful farmer and an influential citizen in the community in which he lived.

Henry Matlock, a brother of the pioneer William Matlock, settled also in McMinn county, Tennessee. His children were Henry Matlock, Sarah Matlock, who married William Purcell; Elizabeth Matlock, who married John M. Leuty, and Nancy Jane Matlock.
