MANUEL, living in Stockton, California 1851. According to information received, not the same as one above even though he reportedly went to California about this time.
MARCUS A., born 1 Dec. 1878 in Conway Co. Ark., son of Battle W. and Elizabeth Brady Matlock. Married Amand Justis and had the following children: M. Justis, Madolyn (Mrs R.W.Leonard), Eleanor (Mrs. W.S. White) and Jack H. Marcus A. Matlock did much research on his branch of the family. In his notes he stated: "it will be noted that all the names in the Bible record were written Medlock and I have used the same spelling in the cornments before. However, all the sons of John R. Medlock (grandfather of Marcus A. whom. I knew spelled the narne Matlock, and also all their children followed the latter spelling. It is my information that William Medlock one of older sons, is responsible for the change in spelling in our family. He was the most prosperous of the sons of John R. Medlock in his day, owned some slaves, a mill, and was one of the first to establish a mercantile business in the village in South Arkansas known as New Edinburg. From some source in one of his trading trips to New Orleans to market cotton and merchandise, he received information that convinced him that the correct spelling of the name should be Matlock so he changed, and all his brothers followed him in the change. Thereafter all this branch of the family spelled its name Matlock, and most of them moved further west into Texas seeking greener pastures. (Note to Mrs. Leonard and Mrs. Jack H. Matlock - I found Miles Jefferson in 1880 Wise Co., Tx.)

MARTIN C., born ca 1824, shown 1830 in Yell Co., Ark. in the household of Wm. Matlock. Listed as a school teacher. History of Roane Co., Tn. lists an early schoolteacher Martin Matlock. Williarn, who went to Texas ca 1866 had a son, Martin C. so I would imagine this Martin C. was a brother. Although an article I have read about Jesse, son of Wm. Matlock, Sr. (Roane to Indiana) said Jesse had four children, census and other records indicate several more, among them Wm., above, and Martin C. The 1850 census of Roane Co., Tn. lists Jesse with six children, among them Jackson. Wm. stated that he had a brother named Jackson and one named James who was killed in the Civil War. The article referred to said that James was killed in the War.
MARTIN CLEVELAND, born 25 December, 1845 in Roane Co., Tn., son of William, and Margaret Persallie. In his biography contained in "Texas and Texans", it is not mentioned that his parents lived in Arkansas, but the 1850 and 1860 census records show them in Yell Co. I do not locate them in 1870 even though the biography states they came to Hood Co., Tx. in 1866. The 1870 census does show another William whom I have not been able to identify. WilIiam's family is shown in 1880. Martin Cleveland married 3 Sept. 1885 in Glenrose, Tx. Sallie Walters. According to census records and biography mentioned above they had the following children: Mollie born 1886; William, born 1888; Ivy, born 1890; Ava, born 1893; Martin, Jr. born 1895; John C., born 1897 and Maggie, born 1900.

MASTIN DELONEY MEDLOCK, born ca 1813 in Ga. (Gwinnett Co.) was the son of Isham and Williarns Medlock. Isham was born 1777 in Virginia, probably the son of John or John, Jr. who were in Greenville Dist., S. C. 1790. In 1850 Mastin D., along with Isham, is shown in the census records in Cherokee Co., Ala. Mastins wife is shown as Mary A. and the following children are listed: Georgia A., born ca 1843; Margaret J., born ca 1845; John A., born ca 1847 and James Albert, born ca 1848. For a long time I ''lost" this group and some of them are still lost but not long ago I ran across the following listing in McNairy Co., Tn. for 1850: Frances Matlock (Frankie) 57, Charles 30, Thomas 22, Moses 20, Andrew 14, Adeline Pope 25, Nancy 5 and Moses 3.
MOSES, married 1 June 1826 Edgefield, S.C. to Mary Ann Mims.

In 1830 there was also a George LaFayette Medlock who was the census taker. He was Sheriff in 1831 but does not show in the census of 1840, etc. Moses continues to show in 1840 and 1850. Wife Nancy shows in 1860. Two females show in 1850: Sophia and Eliza. Eliza continues to show through 1880.
MOSES, shown in 1850 Polk Co.,Tn. age 21 with wife, Nancy, 23 and Mary E. 1 yr. Appears to have had also Alexander and a Jim. This Nancy died in Texas l9O3. buried New Hope Cemetery near Springtown, Texas. Jim had a son named Alex and one named Jim.There were probably others.
-And now I will tackle the Moore Matlocks. It's hard to type with one's fingers crossed.
MOORE, born ca 1732 married Jane Powell, daughter of Edward and Elizabeth Powell. I believe this Moore was the son of William. (born ca 1702), son of John, Sr. of New Kent Co., Va. Moore shows in Halifax in 1765, 1777 and 1779. Had a N. C. land grant in 1787 in Washington Co., Tn. and one in 1789 in Sullivan Co. In 1805 Moore shows on tax records of Roane Co., Tn. He died there in 1812, presumably because his inventory was filed there in the July session of 1812. Jason Matlock was the administrator. The deed records seems to indicate strongly that he had the following sons: Zachariah, Littleberry, Moore, Jr., (he called him a son), Charles (Charles called Moore, Jr. a brother in his will), Luke, Jason and Absolom. I strongly suspect that there was a John and a William. (possibly the one in Carroll Co., Tn.).
There was a Moore Matlock on the tax list of 1803 in Cumberland Co. Kentucky. This could be the Moore above or the Moore below but since Moore below, shows in Overton Co., Tn. (joining ), I would be inclined to think it was he.
MOORE, JR., born 1770-1780. He was commissioned a Captain of the 35th Regt. of Tennessee Militia 11 October, 1811. He appears in the 1820 Census Records of Overton Co., Tn. as follows: 2 males under 10, 1 male 10/16, 1 male 26/45, 1 male over 45; 1 female under 10, I female 10/16, 1 female 26/45 and one over 45. (This would indicate that Moore was born before 1775.)
In 1830 Overton Co. Tn.: 2 males 15/20 and 1 male 50/60; 1 female 15/20, 1 female 20/30 and I 50/60.
Also listed in Overton 1830 are Absolom (Moore deeded land to Absolom in 1823), Thomas and Landon who do not fit into the David and William Matlock line. I do not have the figures on the 1840 census but the heads of households were: Ann Matlock, Absalom, Smith and John. Landon seems to have died young and left a widow, Anna, who later married Gains Newberry and a son, Moore, and a daughter, Martha. Thomas Simpson Matlock had gone on to Indiana. In 1850 Absolorn Matlock appears in the census records of Carroll Co., Ark. as follows:
Absolom Matlock 54 born Tn. Mary 50 born Tn. Eliza J. 20
Nancy 19 Moore 16 Mary 10 All born Tn.
Also listed same county, same year:
Smith S. Matlock 39 Tn. Rebecca 28 Va.
Wm. T. 8 Ark. John W. 6 "
Elizabeth 4 " Samuel S. 2 "
Eliza 8/12 "
I have not located this Absolom after this census, but Smith S. above was in Bell Co., Texas in 1870. I have a postcard (sent by the lovely Mrs. John W. Colvin) written by Thomas Simpson Matlock in 1875 to his daughter in Rushville, Indiana mailed in Waco, Texas in which he mentions visiting in Bell Co., Tx. and that he was on his way home, probably by water which today would be next to impossible. Thomas Simpson had a sister named Catherine who married a Gardenhire.
MOORE, born ca 1801 son of Jason Matlock, Sr. and his first wife, name uknown Moore shows in 1830 census of' Roane Co., Tn. as 1 male under 5, 1 male 20/30; 1 female under 5) and 1 15/20. His wife was Rebecca Pickle, daughter of John and Catherine Huffaker Pickle. Moore is listed in 1840 in Roane Co. as 1 male 10/15 and 1 30/40; 2 females under 5, 1 female 10/15 and 1 30/40. Moore evidently died between 1840 and 1850 because in 1850 Roane Co. census Rebecca is listed as head of household as follows. Rebecca 39, John 23, Mary 20, Catherine J. 18, Nancy 15, Martha 12 and James 10. Bible records sent to Mr. McGee by a correspondent show, among other entries:
Moore Matlock born 2-5-1801
John P. Matlock born 3-26-1827 (a note by this says "son of Jason")
Mary Matlock born 1-31-1830
Catherine Jane Matlock born 10-19-1832
Nancy Matlock born 7-8-1835
Martha Matlock born 5-3-1838
James P. Matlock born 12-21-1840
Tabitha Matlock born 10-20-1832 (obviously not a child of Moore)
Tabitha Matlock died 4-12-1864
William Moore Matlock died 6-18-1860 (Perhaps should have been 1850)
John P. Matlock died 3-18-1850 (census not usually taken this early
yet he shows in 1850 census)
James P. Matlock died 3-3-1869
Tabitha above could have been a twin to Catherine and born I day apart,
MOORE, son of Absolom (son of Jason, Jr.) and Nancy Ann Dugan born in Polk Co. Tn. Married 31 Aug. 1879 in Parker Co. Texas to Melissa E. Roberts, daughter of J. E. Roberts and Sealy Jane Blocker Roberts. Mrs. Matlock died in 1940 in Parker Co., Tx.
MOORE, born ca 1819, son of Jason, Jr. and Elizabeth Hicks Matlock. The 1850 census of Polk Co., Tn. shows wife, Rachel, b. ca 1816 and the following children: Martha E., 8; Mary J., 6, Josiah, 4, and Jason 1.
MOORE, born ca 1836 Shown 1880 Cumberland Co., Ky. 1830 asfollows:
Moore Matlock 42 Tn. Tn. Tn,
Permelia 43 Ky. Ky. Tn.
Laura Ellis, sister-in-law 27 Tn. Tn. Tn.
Panola niece 6 Ark. Tn. Tn.
This Moore seems to fit the Moore, son of Absolom, son of Moore, Jr.
MOORE, married in Roane Co., Tn. in 1810 Lucy Knight. Which Moore?
MOORE MEDLOCK, shown in census records DeKalb Co., Ga. as
Thomas L. D. Medlock 28 Ga. Rebecca 24 Ga.
John T. 6 Ga. William 4 Ga.
Moore C. 1 Ga.
