VALENTINE, born February 27, 1786, son of William and Catherine Sevier Matlock. Served as Sgt. in Kennedy's Company of the 1st Tennessee Infantry under General Andrew Jackson during the War of 1812. Married Mary Bassett on July 20, 1817. She was born January 3, 1790. Valentine served as Sheriff of Overton Co., Tn. for eighteen years. He migrated to Crawford Co., Ark. in 1839 and settled in the Cedarville community. Here he was a farmer, served as Constable and operated a stage coach stop. His wife died in 1862 and he died March 13, 1868- Valentine and Mary (Bassett) Matlock were the parents of five children, as follows:

1. Margaret Catherine, born July 23, 1818. Married Emileus G. Corder.

2. Keturah Bassett, born June 23, 1820. She married David Drennen, and they had one son, David Valentine, She died January 18, 1861.

3. Elizabeth Steel, born January 1, 1827. Apparently never married.

4. Nathaniel William, born September 25, 1828. Served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Married (1) Harriet L. Hanson and had four children: (a) Rebecca Lee born 1868; (b) Harriet Lacy born 1869 m. Richard Oliver; (c) William Henry b. 1870, died single about age 45;

(d) John born 1871 died in infancy. Nathaniel William married (2) Rachel E. Mooney and had four children: (a) Rufus M. born 1874, married Zillie Coleman; (b) Charles M., born 1875 moved to Sherman, Texas; (c) George Franklin, born 1878 never married, killed in train accident at Ardmore, Ok. 1910 and (d) Mary E. Matlock born 1881 married John T. Maxey.

5. John Sevier, born February 20, 1832. Married (1) Virginia Toney and had five children: Margaret L. who married a Lester; Valentine; Sarah Victoria who married George W. Cottrell; John Harrison and Lee Steward, twins. John Sevier married (2) Cynthia Lester and they had one daughter, Virginia. John Sevier Matlock died near Van Buren, Arkansas on July 5, 1889.

VERNON A., born ca 1841 in Indiana, son of Rev. Thomas Jefferson and Nancy Ballard Matlock. Lived in Clark Co., Mo. 1860 in father's household. Shown in 1880 same county with wife, Lottie H. and son John F., shown as born in Illinois. Lottie H. also Illinois.
