Zachariah Matlock, grandson of Edward Powell through his mother Jane Powell MATLOCK is listed in the following Will. His story begins here:

WILL OF EDWARD POWELL - SEPT. COURT 1773
IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN, the eighteenth day of July, one thousand, seven hundred and sixty-five, I, Edward Powell, of the Parish of Antrim County of Halifax, being in good and perfect mind and memory, praise be given to Almighty God, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following: First and principally I commend my soul into the hands of Almighty God hoping through the merits death and possession of my blessed Saviour, Jesus Christ, to have full and free pardon and to inherit everlasting life and my body I commit to the earth to be buried at the descretion of my executors hereafter mentioned, and as touching such worldly Estate wherewith it pleases God to bless me with in this life, I give and dispose of thereon in the following manner. Viz. Imprimis I leave unto my loving wife, Elizabeth Powell during her natural life my two Negroes Sall (or Tell) and Patt, also all my other estate and after her death to be divided as follows:
ITEM I give amongst my four sons, William Powell, David Powell, Mark Powell and Luke Powell, my two Negroes, Sall (Tell?) and Pat to be equally divided amongst them and their heirs forever. (Note: How?)
ITEM I give and bequeath to my son, Mark Powell, the plantation whereon I now liveth with all the land and purtenances belonging to the old survey.
ITEM I give and bequeath to my son, Mark Powell 144 acres of the new land bounded by a line beginning at William Carley's Landing on Banister River and running from thence to Moses Terry's line to him and his heirs forever.
ITEM I give and bequeath to my son, Mark, six head of cattle that he has now in possession, also I give and bequeath to my son, Mark, one feather bed and bedstead and furniture that he has now in possession. Also I give and bequeath to my son, Mark, the great chest.
ITEM I give and bequeath unto my son, Luke Powell, three hundred and ninety acres of land adjoining on the land I gave to my son, Mark, and on Terry's line then running to a corner pine in the head of the branch that runs down by John Clay's hence to _ lands corner tree, then in his line to my sons Mark's line, to him and his heirs forever.
ITEM I give and bequeath to my son, Luke Powell, one feather bed and bedstead and furniture and one horse, bridle and saddle and one gun and the little chest which he has now in possession.
ITEM I leave to John Tuck one hundred and sixteen acres of land adjoining his line and Col. Wooding (?) line which he has paid for.
ITEM I give and bequeath to my daughter, Jane Medlock to her and her heirs forever one Negro girl named Martin.
ITEM I give and bequeath to my daughter, Mary Tuck, one Negro boy named Till (?) to her and her heirs forever. My will and desire is that the remainder of my land shall be sold and equally divided amongst all my children.
ITEM I give to my grandson, Zachariah Medlock, one feather bed and bolster when he is of age and if he dies before he comes of age, my desire is that it shall be sold and equally divided amongst all my children.
ITEM I give and bequeath to my two sons, Mark and Luke, all my iron pots and all my pewter to be equally divided.
ITEM (This should be Item 6.) 1 give and bequeath to my son, Luke Powell, sixty acres of land at the place that Medlock began to build a cabbin, to him and his heirs forever.
Thereby constitute and ordain William Gent and William Powell executors of this my last Will and Testament by me heretofore made. IN WITNESS whereof the said Edward Powells to this my last Will and Testament set my hand and put my seal the day and date above mentioned.

Presented at a court held for Halifax County the 16th day of September, 1773. A certified copy of the above will was submitted by Melba Wood.
The descendants of the above ZACHARIAH MATLOCK and his wife, Eady follows:
[1] Zachariah Matlock was born ca 1756, the son of Moore and Jane Powell Matlock. Married Eady (last name unknown) ca 1780. Lived in Halifax County, Virginia until 1787 when they went to Washington County, Tennessee. In 1794 Zachariah bought land on Boone's Creek from his father, Moore. The deed was witnessed by Jason Moore (Jr.) and Absolom Matlock. Moore was at this time living in Sullivan Co., Tennessee. Zachariah died in 1837 in Washington Co., Tennessee.

[1.2] Ann, born ca 1785 married Ezekial Ellis.
[1.3] James Ransome born 1787, married Barbara Broad Haile.
[1.4] Jane born 1790 married John Rinehart
[1.5] Thomas Martin born ca 1801 married Nancy Mitchell and second Barbara Rinehart
[1.6] Nancy married 1827 John George Vaughn.
[1.7] Eady married 1828 William Vaughn.
(May have been others) All of the above children except Ann and Jane emigrated to Missouri ca 1839 to Crawford and Maries County.
[1.1] ISHAM ESAU MATLOCK
Isham Esau Matlock married in Washington County, Tennessee ca 1808 Nancy Ellen Haile, daughter of Meschack Haile and Mary Carl Buckingham from Baltimore County, Maryland. He died 1874 in, Phelps County, Missouri where he is buried in Matlock Cemetery, north of St. James. Nancy died between 1860 and 1870. They had seven boys and three girls. Names of two girls unknown.

John Matlock married Melinda Ellis. Her parents are unknown. They had 13 or 14 children but no complete list found. Known children were:

[1.1.1.11] ENDIMILE MATLOCK
Endimile Matlock married 13 August, 1871 Perry Dean at Rollo, Missouri. He was the son of Moses Dean and Mary Binkley who married 1826 in Davidson County, Tennessee. Endimile always used nicknames, Ada, Ina, Int. Ent. Edy in court records and said she was born in Tennessee but she was born in Crawford County, Missouri. She remembered moving when about five years old across a river on ice from Norman Creek area to Dillon area and later lived in Elk Prairie area. She was short and dumpy and had light blue eyes. Her father was red faced and thought to be a Scot although some of family said the Matlocks came from Wales. Endimile died in 1948 and Perry died in the fall of 1890, probably from cancer of the throat, in his late thirties.

8. William Albert (Dick) Dean born 8 March 1886 married Alma Haas and Gladys Frank
9. Nellie Elizabeth Dean born 14 June 1888 died at 18 months
10. Edna Ethel Dean born 21 April 1890 married (1) George Hebebrand
By her husband, Hamilton Adarns, Endimile had a son Hamilton Adams, Jr. born 1892. He married Edna Tatman.
MINNIE FLORENCE DEAN
Minnie Florence Dean married George V. Gahr, son of Valentine Gahr and Emilie Meschke. Minnie Dean Gahr had red hair, bright blue eyes and was petite, good-natured and peppy. She lived to be ninety years old. She married 3 March 1893 in Rollo, Missouri George Gahr and they had the following children:
1. Opal Gahr born 17 April 1894 married William Eldon Duckels
2. Myron Gahr born 8 November 1899 married Ruth Ewin
3. Velma Gahr born 3 September 1903 married John Leach.
OPAL AMELIA GAHR
Opal Gahr married William Eldon Duckels 30 August 1912. Living in Chesterfield, Illinois. Their children:
1. Melba Louise Duckels born 18 June, 1913 married William Wood
2. Marjory Jacquelyn Duckels born 23 February 1920 married Thomas Chism, have four children and five grandchildren.

Melba Louise Duckels married 11 April, 1936 William Wood, son of Francis W. Wood and Margaret Bauer. Their children:
1. Robert William Wood born 17 May 1937 married Wanda Juanita Evans. Issue: Treia Ellyn, Mary Louise and Jerri Lynn
2. Nancy Louise Wood born 7 January 1940 married Gerald L. Lagemann. Issue: Kelly Sue, Debra Jo and Jerod Bradley
3. Marilyn Frances Wood born 14 December 1946 married Allen H. Williams. Issue: Deanna Lynn, Darren Allen
4. Suzanne Wilma Wood born 14 March 1949
