Taulbee Family Discussion List Public Archives for April, 1998 Subject: Margaret Canady Resent-Date: Fri, 3 Apr 1998 14:43:49 -0800 (PST) Resent-From: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com Date: Fri, 03 Apr 1998 17:51:44 -0500 From: Barbara Monroe To: Taulbee-l@rootsweb.com Hi, I haven't had a chance to check out all the archives and see if this has been covered yet, so I will just ask. In looking for Thomas Tolson in Orange Co, I came across some Canady's there. They are on tax lists for Caswell District as follows: John Canady 1787, 1792 John Canady Sr. 1792, 1784 James Canady 1787 Is it possible that Margaret and William Hitchcock Taulbee got together in Orange Co. and not Wilkes Co? Or is it possible that I am way off base here? Barbara Subject: Re: Margaret Canady Resent-Date: Fri, 3 Apr 1998 14:59:32 -0800 (PST) Resent-From: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com Date: Fri, 03 Apr 1998 16:13:14 -0800 From: moravia@doitnow.com Organization: doitnow.com To: Barbara Monroe CC: Taulbee-l@rootsweb.com References: 1 The answer is yes, William Hitchcock Taulbee was in the Orange County Militia during the Revolution. Rose's book raises a question of if Margaret was his first wife. She refers to a letter by John Dial Taulbee, which we have not yet gotten our hands on suggesting that he married Margaret after the Revolution, which would mean that his first children would not be Margaret's but of an earlier wife. Now, we know from the James Franklin Taulbee papers that by the time the Taulbee's got around to putting down on paper their family history, that memories were no longer reliable, so even if we get our hands on the John Dial letter, we will have to be careful before accepting what it says. Subject: Tolby-Taulbee Resent-Date: Sat, 4 Apr 1998 07:44:55 -0800 (PST) Resent-From: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com Date: Sat, 04 Apr 1998 09:00:27 -0800 From: moravia@doitnow.com Organization: doitnow.com To: taulbee list There are two stories as to why the spelling of the name in Andrew's line changed from Taulbee to Tolby. This first, the more interesting, is also probably the less likely: #1 William's sons changed the spelling of their name from Taulbee to Tolby following the assasination of U. S. Representative William Preston Taulbee, of Slayerville, Kentucky, by Charles Kincaid, a correspondant for the Louisville Times. on February 28, 1890. Kincaid had written a story accusing Representative Taulbee of misconduct with a woman in a government office, a scandal refered to by Washington, D. C. papers as The Patent Office Scandal. Representative Taulbee is said to have picked up Kincaid, a much smaller man, by the ears and otherwise physically or verbally abused him. As a result Kincaid shot him on the Capitol steps and the blood is still visible today. William's sons were so disgusted by the scandal that they changed the spelling of their last name to Tolby. Not all Taulbees felt Representative Taulbee was at fault. Some felt that the articles by Kincaid were scurrilous and that the fault for the fued between Taulbee and Kincaid was Kincaid's fault. Rose Taulbee's Taulbee Family History contains a copy of a newspaper article defending Representative Taulbee. In any case, Kincaid was not punished, the procecutors deciding that anyone who had acted the way Representative Taulbee did deserved to be killed. #2 The second comes from Manley Tolby, below. It was simply that Manley's grandfather, Andrew Jackson Tolby, could not read not write. Nor could his parents. The name was at that time pronounced Tolby regardless of spelling and it was written down as Tolby. Manley reported having a difficult time finding the Taulbee branch of the family because of the difference in spelling. Both stories are from individuals who knew Manley, so I am not choosing between them officially. Unofficially, I like the second better, but the first is more colorful. The first comes from a granddaughter in law of Manley, the second from the father of one of our list members to whom Manley related the explanation. I am passing it on. Everyone, If you think I will find it interesting, you can be sure others will also. Please send it to the list rather than just me. Then I don't have to make the decision of should I forward it or not. Bob found the following info on http://www.starbase21.com/kybiog and thought you might find interesting Dr. John J. Dickey Diary, Fleming County, Ky. Recorded in the 1870's and beyond. Reprinted in Kentucky Explorer, Volume 11, No 2 June, 1996, p. 83. By permission. Breathitt County JOHN GOFF I have heard Capt. Cope say that when the Copeses came there was a patch of land cleared opposite the mouth of Quicksand. It had been planted the previous year then deserted. Coons and other animals were destroying it. The coons were still walking from the dead trees. The Copeses came down Quicksand, made canoes at the mouth of Spring Fork and came down on them. Sewell Taulbee's grandfather, William Taulbee, was torn by a panther. Sewell is well posted in Taulbees. Jerry Combs is a good authority. "Black Hoof" came to Indian Fields in 1820. He was born at Indian Fields, so was Tecumseh (?). George Hisle says an Indian Methodist preacher, a circuit rider, used to preach near Indian Fields. War Creek was named for an Indian fight. There was an Indian fight about the mouth of Lost Creek. This part of Richard's email, a quote from the Dickey Diary, validates a 1940s era story published by Wardie Craft, who passed away very recently. In the story he called "Billy and the Panther," (as told to him by Daniel David Taulbee, William Ashford Taulbee's grandson) a young William Ashford Taulbee, about 10 to 12 years old, went hunting for racoon one night and instead of his dogs treeing a racoon, they treed a mountain lion. Billy, having more guts than brains, shot it and made it mad. It jumped out of the tree and tore him up pretty bad, opening up his abdomenal cavity. He can probably thank his dogs for his life. Billy was unable to make it home on his own and got a far as the salt lick meadow where he was found the next morning by his uncle Andy who was taking the cows to the meadow. He carried Billy to his house where his mother cleaned him up and then sewed him up with thread made from the hemp plant. (There is a use for hemp besides smoking it). She sealed the wound with clay (as a poultice maybe?) and Billy survived to become my fourth great grandfather and a common ancestor for many of us. The story as written by Wardie Craft is a page and a half single spaced. I have changed the story into a real Kentucky tall tale and use it to keep young school children spell bound whenever I need to bring them under control. Neither Daniel nor Wardie would recognize the story. I have some real dramatic drawing by children dipicting Billy and that Panther. I have the original story, which Carole sent me a couple of years ago, here somewhere. The essential ellements are paraphrased above. Sharon From: moravia@doitnow.com Tue 15:10 Subject: Birchfield, Taulbee, Tolson Resent-From: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com To: taulbee-l@rootsweb.com Been trying to place Birchfield, Tolson, and Taulbee in the same places as they moved from Maryland to Kentucky. Not much success. Below is the result of my efforts so far. One of the things I am trying to use are the first United States Census documents. Contrary to popular belief, this is not the 1790 Federal Census. A number of "genealogists" on the web have forgotten that there was a United States Government prior to the Federal Government under the Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union. As early as 1782 the Congress requested a census of each state to count the population and the value of property in order to set the direct tax rate for each state for the uniform treasury which would provide for the common defense of the states and the operation of the national government. This was accomplished by each state by 1784, and by some, each year following. Many, who probably failed their US history classes, have dismissed the 1784 documents as mere tax lists. I have even been told that they are an attempt to reconstruct the 1790 census using earlier tax lists,(which defies logic since they are 6 years earlier) when actually, taken together, the efforts of the 13 states resulted in the first United States Census. How much of the total effort still survives, I have not been able to determine. (For the purists, the 1790 census was the first FEDERAL census, it was not the first census requested by the national government.) Anyway, semantics aside, I have used them where I could find them, without much success. My genealogical library is missing many of these documents. None of the 1784 documents contained any of our surnames. The following is what I could find today. If anyone here could help me find information on WILL P. TAULBEE b. Mar. 25, 1894 d. Sept. 25, 1955, I would greatly appreciate it. I believe he was murdered in Morgan County. He was intentionally ran over by people leaving from a bar. They stole his money and left. His son, my father, William Eugene Taulbee and his brother went down to Morgan County for the tial; however, when they arrived the found that it was postponed. They did not go back when the trial was rescheduled and it is believed that the trial never even took place. Will Press's mother's name was Liza Jane. His father, whose name I don't know, was a doctor. He later left Liza and moved to Texas. He had six children with another woman in Texas. That is all I know about Will Press and his parents. If you have any other information, or a picture, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks Shelley Taulbee Schilling Sorry, I was in a hurry and made a mistake. I said that Will Press's son's name was William Eugene Taulby. It is actually Joseph Eugene Taulbee. Subject: William Pres. I received the following two emails from a Henry researcher who thinks that in a transcription of Morgan County births, the transcriber got some colums missaligned putting wives with the wrong husbands, one error being a Jacob Henry born to Lewis Henry and Catherine Taublee. From the data I have, it looks like he may be correct, but thought I would put it out to you, some of you are much more knowledgeable than I. If you have anything either way, would you post it, please. The person is not a subscriber to the list, unless my with another username and email, so the post should not have gotten through. If it did, please let me know and I will jump all over Rootsweb. Our list is supossed to be closed to nonsubscribers. The data below will give a source to two of Daniel Burton and Paulina Taulbee's children's birthdate, but I don't know who to put the Rosabelle with. According to Rose, Daniel Allan was married to Lucinda Burton, not a Taulbee, but haven't had time to look at everything. From: "Joe Armstrong" 19:55 Subject: Morgan Co, birth registry 1858 To: , William Burton, son of Paulina Taulbee and Daniel Burton, moved away from his home area. No other information. The above is from your Taulbee Crooked Tree (http://www.doitnow.com/~moravia/index.html ). I and a few other researchers of the HENRY line have had a problem for a couple months. According to the 1858 Morgan Co, KY birth Registry Jacob Henry b Mar 11 1858 s/o Lewis Henry and Catherine (Taulbee). HOWEVER, the registry is a 'reconstruction' of other data and it appears that the transcriber mis-aligned the mothers maiden name. In fact Jacob Henry is the s/o Lewis Henry and Catherine Rule. #1 The reason for this e-mail is the several entries in the birth registry may be of interest to you: Feb 27, 1858 - Wm A - male - alive - Caney - Daniel Burton (father) - Taulbee (mothers maiden name) April 14, 1858 - Daniel W - male - alive- Caney - Wm Burton (father) - Ratliffe (mothers maiden name) Dec (no day), 1858 - Rosa belle - female - alive - White ?Oaks? - D ?W? Allen (father) - Taulbee (mothers maiden name) Just thought you'd be interested in the Taulbee data. #2 Joyce, Kay, Jim, Dale, Peggy The following from http://www.doitnow.com/~moravia/index.html This adds to the credibility of our decision that the birth registry for Jacob Henry (Mar 11 1858) is a mis-alignment of the page that appears to be recopied into a new ledger. Looking at the ledger again . . .I'd say that the fathers Daniel Burton = mothers maiden name Taulbee and Wm Burton = mothers maiden name Ratliff and that Lewis Henry = mothers maiden name = Rule . . . Paulina Taulbee, daughter of William Asford Taulbee and Mary Jane Birchfield, was born 1827 in Perry County, Kentucky and died in 1913 in Morgan County, Kentucky. She married Daniel Burton, the son of William Burton and Hannah Lykins. Daniel was born October 24, 1819 and died January 17, 1889 in Morgan County, Kentucky. William Burton, son of Paulina Taulbee and Daniel Burton, moved away from his home area. No other information. I am going to copy this and the source URL into my notes, just in case the Rule/Taulbee question rears it's ugly head again. If the information the Henry researchers have developed is correct, one cannot trust even the so called primary sources. Robert - I have 2 page copies of the Morgan County Birth register. On both, all handwriting is the same and appears to have been written at one setting by a transcriber. On the one entry for Henry it lists the mothers maiden name as Taulbee and this has been a point of discussion among the Henry researchers. About a month ago it was decided that the maiden name of Taulbee was a transcript error. We've had to research several entries above and below the entry of Henry and it holds true for two entries above and the one entry below that the maiden names are one line off. A letter was sent to Vital Records in West Liberty and Lexington. What-ever the do with the information is up to them. But we, Henry researchers, have documented it and have recorded it in our own archives. Just heard about this: If you would like to transcribe an Indiana or Kentucky census but don't have the data check out this site for a FREE book; http://www.skpub.com/genie/ Here is what they said about a free book; SK Publications publishes books of prints of the original census schedules. Many counties in several states are available from 1800-1850 Census Books of prints of the original census schedules. SK Publications has offered to provide a free copy of one of their books containing photocopies of original census pages to those who volunteer to transcribe counties for which they have books. In return, they ask that a notice be put on the uploaded transcription crediting their donation. If you are interested in this offer, please check out their pages and make sure that they have a book for the state and county that you are interested in transcribing. I know that the following books have been requested for transcribing for us: Dubois Co., IN 1850 Hardin Co., KY 1810-1820-1830-1840 If you would be willing to transcribe but don't have access to the records please request a book from this company!! To: "'taulbeepages'" I have heard that there are some lines of Taulbees which have African-American origins. Anyone know if this is true? I myself am white and am asking the question for no other reason than curiosity. My curiosity is based primarily on a story I heard through my dad to the effect that one of the Taulbees in KY in the mid-19th century held a number of slaves, the descendants of whom took the Taulbee name. My assumption about the economy of the eastern KY area in the mid-1800s was that it would not have been conducive to the type of farming or industry which would have required great numbers of slaves, so if our ancestor(s) did have some slaves it probably was only a handful. One was a Talby who was black. Beyond that, I have not found any more yet. April, if you remember where that was, Gerald won't have to hunt for it. So far have found no evidence that any of the Taulbees held slaves, the area where they lived did not make that all that economically advantageous, but we don't have all the records we need to say for sure. Each time I find a new census or a slave schedule, I scan for our surnames. It would certainly make sense that the former slave would take the name of the master. We can be sure that our Maryland ancestors, at least the Hitchcocks held slaves. Tobacco required it. Organized from 1st Mississippi Heavy Artillery (African Descent). Visit the site for more info on these troops. Please note these URLs. I will get them into the Taulbee census pages so I won't forget them again. April posted them before I built our census on line pages and my memory is not good enough to remember all of what is in the archives. April's post is the ONLY evidence I have seen about colored members of the surname. I had been told that Rose may have mentioned a Taulbee being buried in a colored cemtery. I searched Rose's book for any mention of a Taulbee being buried in a negro or colored cemetery and could not find one. (using the Find function). We must bear in mind that William Hitchcock Taulbee is the only son of Samuel Talbee we have any information on descendants. We know the names of some of his siblings, but none of their descendants. Someday we will find them. The first thing is to someday identify this Samuel Talby. Did he take his name from his former owner? Was he a child of a Taulbee? Was he a free black or a freed slave? When one examines the existing black census documehts from 1860, one finds that the number of free blacks in the south was greater than we might have imagined from our history books or the movies. He is the grandson of William Wayne Bryant who was the son of John Dudley Bryant and Margaret Taulbee. My grandfather, William Wayne Bryant, was born in "Bloody" Breathitt County 27 June 1878. In the 1914, Wolfe County Court records show that Wm. Bryant was allowed to post $1,000.00 bail for the malicious shooting and wounding with intent to "kill". This all came about as a result of an alleged flirting between Ms. Bryant and one Miller. Raymond Bryant, my cousin, now deceased, told me my grandfather rode down to the train station on an old red mule after he had notified Miller that he intened to kill him, and for Miller to bring his gun. There at the train station, the event occurred. Later, the man died, so in 1916 a trial was held and in the Oct. Term of the Wolfe County Court, William Wayne Bryant was found "not guilty" by a jury of his peers. Apparently, if you wanted to flirt or have an affair with a married woman, you had to be prepared to pay the price! And, the jury thought so too. Note: Edward Bryant Bates the grandson is a retired Sheriff in CA. I am researching the "Newton Family". Gladys Taulbee married James Taulbee, the son of William Taulbee and Louisa Newton Noble Taulbee, our great grandmother. We are looking for any information on James' parents. James was born around 1905-1906 and married Gladys in 1927 in Wolfe County. They had 3 children, James, Geneva and Cecil in the early 1930's in Hazel Green. We have made several trips to Wolfe and Breathitt Counties searching for death records or burial locations on the family without success. We live in the Cincinnati area, so any info you may have that might help would be greatly appreciated. I received a copy of his death certificate in the mail today. The death date we have is correct but his dob should be 8 Aug. 1864, according to the death certificate. His age at the time of death is 83 years, 4 months and 23 days. I can see how someone would think the year is 1884. The writing is not real clear. However, if you look very closely you can see it could be 1864 as well and besides the age works out using 1864.
