4 Aug 98 From: moravia@doitnow.com Tue 15:15 Subject: No Taulbee for 6 weeks Resent-From: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com To: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com It is good to be back. Meant to be back weeks ago, but when I saw the 112 - 117 temps on the weather channels, decided to keep Mom up north as long as possible. Still about 112-114 today, but it won't last long. Have an upgraded computer. My Compaq mother board crashed on my trip so I had computer withdrawl. That resulted in nearly 1000 emails to sort through. Some of them add to our Taulbee info. As soon as I read through them, I will post the info here. It is possible that some of the senders have joined the list, so I will appologize in advance if I send something that has already been sent. Got some email from Betty, who helped Rose on her book and she has some things to add. I transcribed 7 cemeteries in Clearwater and Nez Perce Countiesm Idaho. No Taulbees, but a few early Stampers. Louise, even some early Gaskills at Wells Bench where my great grandmother lived. The difference between here and there is that it was only about 65 in the AM and there were always two fawns frolicking on the front yard. They still have not lost their spots. My aunt as a doe that comes back and gives birth every year in her back yard. Had a storm that snapped many trees off aobut 30 feet above the ground. Sent some of them over the high tension 3 phase lines and brought down all of them. We were without power for a day. Had a time keeping Mom's oxygen bottles filled since she could not use her concentrater. Will talk to you later, very pleased to see the additional info that has been posted. It adds additional and perhaps some different information than what I have and what is in Rose's Book. I have deleted the name of the person who sent him the info for now, but if it is important, contact me. Also of interest was James W. TAULBEE who married Parthenia "Sennie" NICKELL. You show Monroe NICKELL (=Caroline ?) as the parents. I've got Robert J NICKELL (=Caroline PEYTON) as the parents. My information comes from , a long time NICKELL researcher. Do you have better evidence than my "she said?" (I'm not being scarcastic here, just kinda frustrated at a few things I've found of that are wrong.) I also have a Nettie and Ruth TAULBEE for James' family: 1. Nettie TAULBEE-10160 1894 2. Matilda Alice TAULBEE-10161 10 Aug 1895 3. Arthur M TAULBEE-10162 28 Oct 1898 4. Again, you show no locations for these people, do I assume Wolfe Co., KY? You note a question as to the wife of Arthur TAULBEE, and suggest it's incorrect as "Pearlie TERRILL". I have Pearl MURPHY from Demoy. The "Morgan Co., Marriages 1900-1950" has that entry with m.24 Dec 1916. The dates I had for the children were all YYYY and wrong! with respect to yours. I believe your full dates over just YYYY. ;=) ----- The information Don Sent has one more child than Rose had, Nettie 1894. From: moravia@doitnow.com Thu 13:13 Subject: Taulbee - From the list manager Resent-From: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com To: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com I have decided that list manager sounds better than list owner. I have just returned from a little over two months in the Pacific Northwest. My mother board died up there near the end of June and I have been out of contact until Monday PM. Do not get upset if I delay in replying to or contacting any of you. First, a huge thank you to Louise Gaskill for managing the list in my absence. Judging from the number of new subscribers, maybe I should be gone more often. Second, an even greater thank you to Carole Bays for her fine posts. No one on this list has contributed more than she has nor conducted more original research. Thank you Carole for your unselfishness. Some administrative notes: 1. Our obit page has a new message saying that Due to the large number of email we are getting concerning these obits, email queries will not be replied to. If you are a submitter, feel free to ignore any query. It is of course up to you, but they have been warned. We are no longer going to post the email address of the submitter and when the new version of the software is uploaded, we will try to go back and delete those already posted. This is because of the grasping at straws queries that come through. Since they have been warned, feel free to delete them unread if you wish. 2. I pass along to the list any email I get that may add to what is in Rose's book. Now that we are somewhere between 80 and 100 subscribers, I am becoming more concerned with what can be in those posts. I deleted a name of a source from a post yesterday because the person who sent it to me expressed frustration about inaccuracies. By deleting the name, it can't get back to the individual that something negative was said about their research. At least that was my hope. 3. Just because I post it, or someone else posts it, or it is in Rose's book, or on my page, it is not necessairily correct. This is a discussion group mail list. Information posted is for discussion and evaluation, not to be always accepted at face value. Some of the posts will end up in our closed archives. Closed archives are where we put things that may offend others, may have questionable copyright status, may simply be wrong. It is for us to discuss. When it does document Rose's book or what I have on our pages, it will be posted as a source document. 4. What may be posted: For you new subscribers over the last 2 or so months, There is no restriction on what can be posted concerning the Taulbee or related surname genealogy. Use your delete key if the subject does not interest you. It will eventually end up in the archives and you can always go back and find it. I will tolerate no flame wars, no complaining about what someone posts, no deliberate rudeness. Nor will I tolerate the posting of any virus warning. Any of these may result in immediate unsubbing of the offending individual. I have never had to enforce these rules. This is by far one of the best behaved groups on the web. Now on a personnal note. I have had time to write to only a couple of you, so I will take this time to tell the rest of you that I got my daughter married off and she now lives in Tennessee and is a HATFIELD. >From the wedding we went to Idaho where my mother board died. I replaced it Monday and have in effect a new faster computer. We were stuck in Idaho throughout July because I decided not to return to Arizona with 117 degree weather. The altitudes were hard on Mom, she has COPD. Anyway, I am now home and almost caught up with the email backlog. One of the emails I received was from a person who is not supposed to exist. Louisa Bailey, daughter of Paulina Taulbee and Gabriel Bailey had 4 sons. I was told by my mother and aunts that all had died and so had any children. Well, yesterday, in the middle of the 1000 backlogged emails was a letter from a woman saying she was the granddaughter of Louisa and that there was another granddaughter living in California. So, you cannot rely on what your close relatives tell you. I will get the photos sent me scanned and on line sometime in the next couple of weeks. I also have found a source for inexpensive unlimited web storage to permit our pages to expand. Want to check it out first. I hope that those of you who are new will introduce yourself to the list. Will Talk to you all later. From: moravia@doitnow.com Thu 14:02 Subject: Taulbee Pages Resent-From: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com To: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com My ISP has graciously granted me an additional 50MB of web storage space so our Taulbee pages have room to grow, especially with the photos you have been sending me. So feel free to keep sending them. I have made two family connections through the photos, so they can be more than a couriosity. We now have lots of room for transcribed or scanned images of original source documents. If you have any you are willing to share, please email them to me. Talk to me first about the format. I have, you have, we have much more information than I have posted. It is just that I don't have time to post it all myself. Any of you who want to take over part of the pages and email them to me when ready to upload, I will most likely not turn you down. I do make it a policy not to post information on people born after WWI. I will probably change that to say after 1930, but I don't have time now. That is why some of my pages do not have as much info as is available. A name, parents' names, birth date and birthplace are all that are needed in many states to obtain a certified birth certificate with which all kinds of mischief can be accomplished, so I try to protect privacy. I am afraid I do get careless sometimes, but I try not to. Those I have put up today are some that Robert Warren sent me before I left on my trip north. Those who wish to contribute photos, please follow the following guidelines: 1. The people should not be living unless they give their permission. 2. If you can send me the scanned image, use gif for black and white and JPG for color. Other formats take a lot more memory. If your scanner can only scan in TIF, that is alright, it will take longer to transmit as an email attachment, but I will change the format on this side. 3. If you don't have a scanner and want to send photos, do not send me your only copy. Address is 17200 W. Bell Road #461, Surprise, Arizona 85374. 4. It would be nice if you would send me a paragraph or two about who these people are to make the pages more interesting. I may eventually get around to that, but it will take a while as I have other things to finish first. 5. If you want to put photos on a page of your own, send me the URL when it is up so I can place a link on our page. I have the archives up for June and July, thanks to Louise who not only saved them for me, but put them in a text document. The next project as soon as I finish the photos Robert sent me is to go through them and post to our pages all the information that documents or adds to Rose's book. I had never seen this magazine before but found it in a waiting room at work and started to look at it. On page 102 there is an article by Frederic D. Schwarz. It seems to be a regular feature in the magazine called The Time Machine. The first part of it is called 1648 (350 years ago) and titled Bewitched. The first paragraph is about early executions for witchcraft. The last sentence of the first paragraph is: AS EARLY AS 1638, HOWEVER, DOROTHY TALBYE WAS HANGED IN BOSTON FOR KILLING HER CHILD AT THE BEHEST (AS SHE ADMITTED) OF SATAN. This is the only mention of Dorothy in the article. I have emailed the author of the article to find out where he got his information. Has anyone else ever heard of the connection of witchcraft and satan to Dorothy? I used to correspond with Rose Taulbee back in the late 1970's concerning genealogy and if I remember correctly she felt there was no connection. When I hear from Mr. Schwarz or the American Heritage Magazine, I will pass on the information to the Taulbee List. From: moravia@doitnow.com Tue 17:44 Subject: Cemetery inscriptions: Resent-From: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com To: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com Thought I would take a moment to share an "adventure" with my two favorite groups of "cousins". This summer when my computer died and I was stuck on my aunt's mountain residence with nothing really to do, I decided to transcribe all the small local cemeteries. Didn't get them all but got seven. It was an eye opener. The information provided was much more than I expected from reading through the transcriptions that are on line, many of which provide much less information than they could. I found that these old stones, some well over a century, which is okay for this part of Idaho, contained a wealth of genealogical information. 1. It gave me the dates of birth and death. 2. Often it gave me the place of birth and death. 3. It usually provided me with a maiden name or the name of a spouse. 4. It sometimes gave me the names of parents and children. Sometimes grandchilden. 5. On rare occations it gave me the cause of death. 6. The grouping of the stones often helped me place different surnames in the same family. 7. The stones often gave me the military unit and war the individual fought in. I found that many stones were missing. Some never existed because this was a poor area, especially during the depression. The wooden markers had rotted away. Those that did exist were often deteriorating badly with weathering, moss, litchens, and other damage. Some Flat stones I had to did out of six inches of earth to read them. Many had only funeral home markers with missing names or dates. So I went to the funeral home and asked about what records they might have. "We are sorry, but we had a fire in the 1950s and all the earlier records were lost." Okay, what records might exist at the courthouse? "They also had a fire about that same time." "Who might have these records?" "Try the cemetery district." So I did, the district had records of burials for two of the cemeteries, names only, dates of burial, no other information. What happens is that for a couple of generations, these cemetery stones may be the only source of the above information, depending upon the year, especially prior to the first World War when the states were required to keep vital records. I have gained a great deal of respect for our cousins who have spent hours walking up and down hills to transcribe these old stones. I only had two hills to climb and only one rattlesnake to chase away, but had to deal with the lawn watering schedules of the different cemeteries. I would ask that everyone who has the time, (Everyone of course will never happen) go out to a cemetery, especially and older one, and write down what the stones say. Keep the stones in order so family relationships can be hinted at, and transcribe all information on the stone. You might be saving the only record to exist for some people. I only found three family members in the seven cemeteries, but at least someone may benefit from the effort as I have certainly benefitted from the effort of others. To Carole, on the Taulbee list who transcribed several, I have a much better appreciation of your effort now than before. I would have done none of this if my computer had not gone on strike. Anyway, just my suggestion as to how we can all help preserve data for each other. BTW, for anyone interesed, I have placed the files on our website below under Idaho - Clearwater and Nez Perce Counties. http://www.doitnow.com/~moravia/cem.html for those who hate to wade through index pages. Henry, if you have problems turning off the html option, let us know what mail program you are using and I am sure someone will know what to do. Also, temper your enthusiasm about the data with a little caution. The marriage is too late for her to be the mother of Wiley, born 9n 1829 unless of course.... Rose does not have the name of the first wife and only that she died about 1828. She could of course have died in childbirth (Wiley) and Andrew married Elizabeth the following Christmas Eve. This will document to marriage on pg 109 of Rose's book. Unfortunately there is no information in Rose's book or in the above file to name the parents of Elizabeth. Rose is not certain that Wiley is a son of Andrew. She says this on page 133: Have decided to put WILEY here in Andrew's file, at least they will be together. Andrew could have married two times before he married Elizabeth Alley. Have info that Samuel and Wiley were brothers and that their mother's name was Banks (last name) Samuel was married and living in Breathitt County, KY 1850 and Wiley was married and living in Morgan Co., KY 1850. By 1860 they both were in Morgan Co., 1870 and 1880 they were in Wolfe Co., did not move, Wolfe formed from part of Morgan. Did not find them 1900. IF they don't belong to Andrew, then there is SAMUEL b. 1810 who married 1827 Perry County, Ky and we don't know his wife's name. This Samuel belongs to II Samuel Taulbee. Samuel (1810) was a widower by 1840 and never married again. I do hope someone really knows that will tell us. She sent me a half inch thick stack of printouts with all kinds of spelling and other errors. Now it is up to me to find time to correct them. I have an auditory tonal deficit which causes me to be unable to distinguish between some tonal values. This has conspired to make me one of the world's worst spellers. It did not keep me from always being the best reader in school. Talk to you all again later. In addition to what is described below, it is supposed to permit Louise and I to edit the previous posts. Got my fingers crossed on that. On the Genconnect there are county query boards, surname boards, biography boards and of course obit boards. All can be reached from the Taulbee Pages and going to the obit board and then clicking on the genconnect icon. After that you may want to bookmark the URL. It has 2,500 names. It was not transcribed for on line viewing so the columns do not line up perfectly yet. They will with a little work. I will not be placing a link to it until the transcriber sends me an introduction for it. But you may view it at http://www.doitnow.com/~moravia2/1-1850~1.txt There are no Taulbees,Talby, Dunn, Combs, etc., but there may be some of your other lines, for example there are Southwicks for you Louise. Sarah would be 8 and James 6. Their height looked about right in the photo. I was struck by James' clothing and bare feet. The Photo is now on line with the other two under the James Madison and Prudence Taulbee link. As a result of this discovery, it is now believed that the photo next to prudence in the old album is a photo of James Perry Taublee as a young adult. It is important that we dig out these old photos and identify the people before so many generations pass we can't do it. I want to thank everyone who has taken the time to send photos so we can build our on line album. There is on line at http://www.gentree.com/ a page of links to individual family databases, many of them on line gedcoms. It is called the Genealogy Database Index. I used to maintain a similar page but the URLs kept changing so much I did not have time to keep them current so I took them down. Expect to find dead links and use caution. The page claims to contain all known family databases, which I suppose from the viewpoint that they contain all known to the page owner is correct. Netscape users, this is a 400 KB page of html text and for some reason the last two versions of Netscape Communicator I have will not load it without falling appart about half way through. Ihave that problem only with very large text pages, not with graphics. What I do is close communicator and load it in an old version of Netscape Gold 3.0. I know it is claimed that you cannot have more than one verson of netscape on the computer but that is not true. All you do is put them in different directories, give them different icons and different path names. Just make sure you use only one for your mail reader. Both these sons with wifes and children are in Idaho in 1910, John in Twin Falls County and Robert in Idaho County. Robert's son, Robert K Tolby is listed as born in the Indian Territory on the census. I have spent countless hours trying to find a Taulbee, Tolby, or variant in the scores of Oklahoma Genealogy Journals in our library. Today, I found TOULBEE, which is close enough. But to prove there is a right wing conspiracy against genealogy, it sent me to the only issue not there. Frustration. Anyway, if any of you are near a library which has access to the following, would sure like to know what it says about TOULBEE on page 141. Oklahoma Genealogical Society Quarterly. Vo 27, #2, 1982 Robert and John changed the spelling of the name to Tolby. I discuss two possible reasons on the indicated web page. Some of their descendants found their way to Arizona. I have had to unsub some people from the notification list of the Taulbee Obits (which has a large number of Combs included). This is the list which sends subscribers a copy of each obit posted. All those who I have had to unsub are on aol and the error is either or , the second being the most likely correct reason. I get a bounce message each time a delivery fails and if Louise and I post 30 obits in a day, I am getting anywhere from 30 to 120 bounce messages from aol. There is really no reason to subscribe since you can check the board once a week and see the headers of each new obit posted. Even better, if you really want them, let Louise or I know and we can simply send you the file we are posting. (Please don't ask for back files). That will save me the agrevation of dealing with the bounce messages. If you want to be subscribed, please keep your mail boxes cleaned out if you are on aol. For those who have no idea what I am talking about, we have an obit board as part of the genconnect system at http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ky/TaulbeeObits with 3346 posted so far. These are obits from all over the nation that connect to the Taulbee family, and beause of that there are many many Combs included, as well as many other surnames. From here you can search the entire world for obits or surname queries posted to the gennconnect system. We know the marriage of William's Brother, Zephaniah, who remained in Maryland, but nothing about his descendants. We have zilch on any other brother of William. We have so much on line that we don't have to ask that many questions on the list. BUT, most of what is on line is (while probably about 90 percent true) is lacking in documentation. So please, anything you have that will support (or change) what is on line, old letters, vital statistic certificates, family oral histories (these are less reliable) data you have found, anything, please share it. We do not have the missing generation that connects Edward and Mary Talbee in Maryland to Stephen's line in Rhode Island. Until we find that, we cannot be sure that Edward actually descends from John and Dorothy Talby in the Bay Colony. The IGI has many examples of Talby in certain parts of England. So far we have not found a Talby who transported, willingly or unwillingly, to the Bay Colony. Somewhere that link has to exist. You new subscribers, please let us know who you are and what information you may have. We were all new subscribers at one time and some "new" subscribers have contributed quite a lot to adding to, correcting, and documenting what we think we have now. My own most wanted at this time is to find out who the father of Alice Temperance Hill (Daughter of Nancy Taulbee) was. Was Tempy illegitimate as family tradition seems to support, or was she the product of an earlier marriage of Nancy? Talk to you all later. To: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com Re: Bob's suggestion earlier today, to the effect of continuing research. I wholeheartedly agree that what will be needed to get some of our lines back further and to document suppositions and missing links is to get down and dirty, i.e., physically visit local libraries, county courthouses, etc. I also feel terribly guilty that I work a mere 5 or so miles from where Edward probably lived and farmed and probably died. My problem, like most of the rest of you, is time. A few months back I made some brief forays to the local library to search early Maryland records. I came up empty, but there are some books in there and possible leads to other sources that might be worth looking into. I guess the reason for this message (apart from whining about my own present circumstances) is to throw down the gauntlet to any of you members who might have the time most of us don't, toward the end of researching this particular ancestor. If any of you would be able to visit this area, I could at least point you to an excellent start, namely, the Harford Room of the Joppatowne Library. Joppatowne very near the mouth of the Gunpowder River and near the old town of Gunpowder, which now consists of only a few old houses. I believe the records show that Edward lived "on the north side of Gunpowder" (not the Gunpowder River). There are books at this library that detail the early history of Baltimore County, as well as some old church records. Many of the books there are reference only, no sign-out allowed, which means potentially spending many hours in there. During my all-too-brief visits there I managed only to confirm what is already published on the list about Edward, Samuel, and their direct descendants. To: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com Ooops! Idiot me hit the send button before I edited this message, but I guess I made my point. If any of you would like to visit Maryland, I could show you around to some starting places. I'm guessing a minimum of a week might be required. For any of you who might want to take this up, for general reference, the area is approx 15 miles NE of Baltimore, so perhaps you could combine your research with a bit of leisure time, such as Balt Ravens or Balt Orioles games, Inner Harbor, Wash, DC, the Eastern Shore, or whatever. I know my way around here pretty well, and I'd be glad to help. The confines of my job seem like they're growing tighter each day. I work for the U.S. Army at Aberdeen Proving Ground - great job security, but very long and demanding hours. Oh well, enough whining. I'd love to know who more of my cousins are. (Hint, hint to those of you haven't introduced yourselves. :-) So, I re-introduce myself now... and hope you will too." In a post from Aug 6th, two days short of this list's one year anniversary, Bob wrote that there are now 80 to 100 of us. If we're closer to 100 on the list that's about 8 per month since January. One of these days, someone on this list - or someone who joins us - is going to find or have one of the missing links on Bob's (our) most wanted lists.
