Taulbee List Archives, January, 1988

This will probably be the last archive I post in html format rather than as a text document. The html editor removes all the formatting and returns in the email post and I lack the time to correct the display of the messages.

Re-Introduction (arielmt , Thu 18:00) Resent-From: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com To: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com [January 1, 1998]

Happy New Year everyone! I spent today going through and categorizing all the messages that have been posted to this Taulbee mailing list. (I keep my own archive for a variety of reasons, and because I like to be able to refer to the posts offline.) In doing this I have to say that many of the messages mean much more to me now than they did when they were first posted, and when I first joined the list. I'm glad I kept them, there was much that I'd forgotten was discussed and there's been much progress made - especially to the Taulbee pages - in such a short time. ....a pleasant way to spend an afternoon.

Bob recently said there are over 40 of us now! It seems to me that our cousins have been joining us at a rate of about 10 per month. Wonderful! Wouldn't it be neat if next year at this time there were 160 of us? I'd love to know who more of my cousins are. (Hint, hint to those of you haven't introduced yourselves. :-) So, I re-introduce myself now... and hope you will too.

Let's follow April (Annacarole , Thu 21:00) Resent-From: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com To: Taulbee-l@rootsweb.com

I think April has a good ideal to start the New Year off right. Trusting everyone ate their black eyed peas or kraut, and didn't sweep any dirt out the door today, and did all the things they wanted to keep on doing the rest of the year. I didn't do much for I want to be lazy this year again.

I'm Carole Bays, of Dayton, OH, formerly of Wolfe County Kentucky and hope to be back there in five years. I suffer from greed, greed in finding everything out about our area and our family. I love getting my hot little greedy hands on info.

Christmas Gifts (arielmt , Thu 22:40) Resent-From: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com To: "'taulbee-l@rootsweb.com'" <taulbee-l@rootsweb.com>

Just thought I'd tell you all about some of the awesome 'gifts' I got.

Went to Detroit on Boxing Day to visit a great aunt (mother's side, not Taulbee). At Thanksgiving had asked her to drag out the family photos, so when I arrived there were two big boxes waiting. An accumulation belonging to her, two sisters (one is grandma) and a brother-in-law (grandpa). Never put in albums or labeled... boohoo. Took two days to go through hundreds of photos, heaven!

Lucky me, found great stuff: marriage photo of grandmother's parents, photo of grandmother's grandfather (with a clipping from his beard attached! anyone know why?), photos of grandfather's mother, photos of grandfather's grandparents! (at least that's who I think they are). Also found actual 1927 receipt from when gr grandfather wired money to Austria so family could join him in US, and grandfather's journeymans record book from when he completed his apprenticeship in Germany as a butcher. Lots of other amazing stuff - I can no longer put off buying a scanner!

Visited with my Taulbee uncle too. He gave me another copy of Rose Taulbee's book, which I am willing to share. If you are interested please e-mail me privately so we can discuss how to accomplish this.

Your cousin, April Taulbee

P.S. A word of advice. If you've been putting it off, or like me, have recently renewed your interest in climbing the family tree, start interviewing and getting information from older family members NOW. I have just learned that its a longer process than I thought it would be and memories might be better on some days than others. Even if they are in good health, its especially important to start now if your family member is the last survivor of their generation and not particularly interested in family history and/or it brings some sadness to remember and discuss. You can't push, and must do it over time.

Taulbee family pictures (Stan Taulbee , Fri 00:11) Resent-From: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com To: taulbee-l@rootsweb.com

I read with interest April's story about going thru and looking at all those family pictures. It reminds me of when I was about 12 and was looking thru a trunkful of Taulbee family pictures (Luther Taulbee). A few years later after both grandparents has died I went back to try and find them. They were gone, thrown out as so much junk. I wished I had asked for them when I could. The only thing I got from the estate was an old sad iron (ironic..)

I have been researching my parents families for 4 years, and I must say, it has been quite rewarding. My mothers line (Breathitt , Perry and Knott Co.s KY) and my fathers line (Wolfe Co., KY), connected through a Taulbee-Combs (what else) marriage. I must admit, that on occasions I have felt quite overwhelmed, but never enough to quit.

New Year Introductions (Bobby Christall , Fri 04:00) Resent-From: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com To: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com

What a wonderful idea! All the list cousins identifying their lines. I am Nadine Christall. My line descends like this.
gggrandfather John Dial Taulbee m Phoebe Ratliff
gggrandmother Martha Ann Taulbee m Richard Stephenson
g grandmother Delphia Alice Stevenson m Shade Holbert
grand father Frank Orville Holbert m Blanche Jaco
mother RayDean Holbert m William Curb

My gggrandfather maintained a family album of the Magoffin County Kentucky group...as did gggrandmother Martha. I encourage everyone to seek out pictures and submit them to Robert. Our webmaster has been very generous in listing these pictures and enabling alot of folks to see their ancestors for the first time! The rest of us might be able to identify folks from group photos in this manner. And stories of the family! Tell us about those stories! I found one yesterday of great interest re the marriage of William Taulbee to Miss Wright...written by Green Trimble as he recounted his venture to Breathitt County in 1837-38. "The other wedding of that winter was the most remarkable. It was that of Wm. Taulbee to Miss Wright, daughter of Elisha Wright, singing master and music teacher. On Upper Devils Creek..." It goes on to tell of the life style and customs of a Kentucky wedding of the day! Lets share those photo's and those stories that change the hard statistics into the life of our family. Happy New Year to All!

Taulbee Introductions (moravia@doitnow.com, Fri 14:21) Resent-From: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com To: taulbee-l@rootsweb.com

We now have 47 on the list. If most will post introductions of their lines (or repost) as the case may be, I will pull them out and place them on a page by themselves so they will not get lost in the archives. If enough of you post your lines, we will know which lines we have on the list and it may help in sharing information between us.

When this list was first established, it decided that there were no restrictions as to what can be posted as long as it partains somehow to our family. There are no surname lists for some of the families which married into the family such as Birchfield, Rose, Swango and Banks. For other related names there are lists for Combs, Childers, Dunn, King, Holland (Hollon) and others. It is unrealistic to expect that all of us are going to belong to all these different lists and read through 300 or more email messages each day. If the other line you are posting is a probable Taulbee relative, post to our list as well as the main surname list, otherwise your post may be missed by someone who has the information you need. Surname lists are a two edged sword. On one hand it has brought us together. On the other hand, the more surname lists, the more places we need to search, the more diluted the information becomes. So use this list to find any Taulbees or non-Taulbees who are related by birth or marriage.

My line is buried on the Taulbee Pages and can be a bit difficult to locate.

Edward and Mary Talbee in Maryland Colony.
Samuel Talbee and Elizabeth Hitchcock in MD and NC Colonies.
William Hitchcock Taulbee and Margaret Canady in MD(?), NC colony and State, KY

Dear Cousins, I am very new in this group and want to thank Pat Williams for putting me on to it. I have just hit the high spots of The Crooked Tree, The Taulbee Pages etc. at Bob Georges site. It is great!

I noted several photos at the site which brings me to Rose's book. In her book which I have a copy of there is a very poor X-erox photo of JOSEPH ELSBERRY TAULBEE and MATILDA (Mills) TAULBEE. This is my GG-Grandparents. Does anyone know where this photo is for real. I would love to have a copy of it. I have photos of my G-Grandparents Taulbee, Levi Francis & Rose Calloway "Callie" (Taylor) Taulbee.

Also, I'm sure I've missed something no longer than I have been around. I've seen a lot of states mentioned. NC, KY, OHIO, and on and on. Did I miss ARK or is it talked about too. I have a cemetery list of Republican Cemetery near Damascas Ark and several Taulbees are there including some in my line. If anyone is interested please let me know and I'll throw out what I have.

Taulbee - Birchfield (moravia@doitnow.com, Fri 20:28) Resent-From: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com To: taulbee-l@rootsweb.com

Louise, I am going to pick on you a bit, but it is for a good cause.

When Louise posted her lines, she listed Samuel's wife as Elizabeth Birchfield. I was going to gently remind her that the name is Rebecca, not Elizabeth, when I rememberd a post I put on the list last September, which also named Samuel's wife Elizabeth.

Rose also first listed her as Elizabeth and then switched to Rebecca the next time she was mentioned. I do not have enough confidence in Rose's book to take it as gospel over another source, although I wonder if Rebecca Elizabeth Birchfield might not be a reasonable possibility.

Here is what I posted in September. I pulled it out of the archives. Give some thought to the Rebecca vrs Elizabeth, and the possibility of Rebecca Elizabeth. Somehow I like the rythmn of that better than Elizabeth Rebecca, but both are a possibility.

Notes for ADAM BIRCHFIELD: >From Lucy B. Dudek, Fayeteteville, NC

From: In The Land of Breathitt, p. 36

"The legend of Daniel Boone in Breathitt is partly supported by the naming of Boone's Fork of Frozen Creek, whis is in the section where he is supposed to have hunted. Adam Burchfield, an early settler, told the story during his lifetime, that when he first came into the county, he found a hunter's camp on this branch of Frozen Creek, and on a nearby tree was carved the name of the first wilderness pathfinder, indicating it was his camp. Daniel Boone or one of his companions also cut his name in the bark o another tree along the Thom's Strong Fork of Frozen Creek." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Adam's sister, Elizabeth Birchfield, wed Nancy Tolbey's older brother, Samuel, in Wilkes Co., NC in 1796. Talbee, Samuel's children. (moravia@doitnow.com, Fri 20:41) Resent-From: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com To: taulbee-l@rootsweb.com

These are the aunts, uncles of William Hitchcock Taulbee. The Children of Samuel Talbee and Elizabeth Hitchcock. It is interesting that William Hitchcock Taulbee is not mentioned in this source, Baltimore County Families, 1659 - 1759, causing me to believe that he was born in NC, not Maryland, or possibly VA as stated by Judge Taulbee. In the DAR Patriot's Index, William's birthplace is also given as Virginia. The first time I saw William Hitchcock Taulbee mentioned as a son of Samuel was in a book called Marylanders to Carolina and another called Marlylanders to Kentucky. The information had been contributed by Bob Hedgecock, a major Hitchcock researcher.

Zephania, b 29 Dec 1741; (married Mary Wolling/Wollen) Ann, born 6 Oct 1737, married William Huggins; Asael born 10 feb 1739; Emilie born 26 August 1744; Samuel born 12 Nov 1758; Isaac born 10 June 1761;

Not mentioned in this source are three children that are mentioned in Rose's book:

Elizabeth; Mary; William Hitchcock Taulbee (b 1748)

Rose stated that ALL of the Marriages and Births of the Hitchcock and Taulbee families were found in St. John's Parish, Baltimore, which would put William Hitchcock's birthplace as Maryland, my suspisions not withstanding.

If there is someone on this list who can get their hands on the records of St.John's Parish, it would answer some of these questions.

Cousins, I have just placed Johnson County, KY Marriages 1842-1861, three years missing, on line on the Taulbee Pages http://www.doitnow.com/~moravia/index.html

They will stay there only a few days until I get them into the archives. They are disapointing as far as our main lines are concerned, My Find key on the browser found no combs or Taulbees. Just 2 Childers. I am posting this only in case some of you have other Johnson County interests and can make use of this. You can thank David May at DMay77055@aol.com for donating to us so many Johnson, Morgan and Lawrence County census, birth, death and marriage records and he has promised more to come in the future.

Where is Damascus? What county?I couldn't find it on my old atlas. My mother-in-law's grandmother was Minnie Miriam Taulbee, b. 13 Jul 1867 at Pleasant Hill, Sabine Parish, LA married to Jesse Maddox in 1890. Minnie's father was a Thomas L. Taulbee, b. in KY according to Minnie's death cert. We haven't been able to locate Thomas. The family notes say he was married to Bell Gorham (?) from AL. Perhaps she was from Arkansas, or they may have moved from Sabine Parish, LA to Arkansas and died there... I would be very interested to view your cemetery information. Would you please post it for all of us to see? Thanks! Janelle Graham Martin martin@reno.quik.com

One of my duties as a list owner is to go ballistic and rant and rave each time one of you sends an attachment to the list. I could rant and rave in private, but I should probably expain this to everyone. I put this in the welcome letter for new members, but some of you are old timers from way back in August and September when there was only the generic letter from rootsweb.

Okay, NEVER, EVER, ect., send an attachment to the list. While small ones are harmless, larger ones may cause serious damage to the list server which would be unfortunate. Paste it into the email if you can. Our list is set to accept posts of up to 20KB. If it is too large, break it into two or more postings.

Some of the email programs readers have cannot handle attachements, so they either get dropped off, come through as garbage, of just cause the entire message to crash. I would hope that all Taulbee list members would be smart enough to use a state of the art program such as Netscape mail which has no problems of this kind, but for some people, the only email access available is through one of the free services which will not accept the attachment.

I also do not know what attachments do to digests. Maybe one of you on the digest format could let me know.

DO NOT WORRY about the small attachments placed at the end of Microsoft mail. They are harmless, but they do irritate some recipients. There is a way to keep them from forming, but I do not know what it is. Readers will thank you if you can figure out how. As more new computers are sold with windows 95, microsoft mail will become more widely used.

A word about attachments in general.

If they are to be read by everyone, they must be in ascii text, nothing else. This attachment was in Microsoft Word. It can be opened only by people with Word, MS Works, or a program which will convert it. All the others will receive only garbage. So attachments in an application should be sent only to people with the same program and same operating system. If you have the windows 95 version, those using Windows 3.1 may not be able to open it. I will not upgrade until Windows 98 comes out.

Since I have MS Works, I opened the attachment and posted the linage to our linage web page so there is no reason to resend it.

One more thing while I am in my rant and rave mode. Please do not post in html format. The fonts and colors may look nice, but again, not everyone's email programs can handle them. They also add nothing to the basic message. I really believe, these are the only no nos on the list except for the requirement that we be civil.

Taulbee Line (MARYHERZOG , Mon 21:39) Resent-From: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com To: taulbee-l@rootsweb.com

I am researching Taulbee for my grandchildren; their line is the following:

Edward Taulbee & Mary Samuel Taulbee & Elizabeth Hitchcock William Hitchcock Taulbee & Margaret Canady Peter Tolson & Polly Ann Taulbee John J. Sparks & Tamar Jane Tolson Fielden Sparks & Emma Lou Booth Columbus Profitt & Ellen Sparks Austin Profitt & Nina Belle Fitzhugh Glen Profitt & Patricia Ann Domezio Andrew, Emily, William Profitt (grandchildren)

John J. Sparks of the 5th generation is brother to Phoebe Sparks who married Adam Birchfield.

Other Kentucky names that appear in their family tree are Hollon, Shoemaker, Deaton, Owens, Teaders, Fairchild, Tompkins, and Spencer. I find it fascinating when the same names keep appearing over and over and everyone ends up cousin to everyone else!

Well, the list has reached the half century mark, we have 50 cousins now subscribed. I welcome the several who have subscribed since Christmas.

Fifteen of our cousins have now posted their basic lines. You can read these by clicking on the Taulbee Pages. The link to the linage is the first one listed. Hopefully, this will help some of you contact the person most likely to have information for you.

I invite the rest of you to follow April's lead and post as much of your linage as you wish.

My Taulbee/Tolby Line ("Pam Wiley" , 01/07/98 20:03)

Hi group, I think that sending our line/link to the Taulbee e-mail group is a great idea. You will find mine below. I have a photo of Thomas T. Tolby and Mary Margaret Tolby that I will be sending later.

Tolby/Taulbee Line

Edward Taulbee m. Mary
Samuel Taulbee m. Elizabeth Hitchcock
William Hitchcock Taulbee m. Margaret Canady
Samuel Taulbee m. Rebecca Birchfield
Thomas T. Taulbee/Tolby m. Mary Ann Jones
Mary Margaret Tolby m. George Franklin Henderson
Otta Earl Henderson m. Zelpha Etta Baker
Frances Marie Henderson m. William Thomas Pavel
Pamela Ann Pavel m. V.C. Wiley
Marta Marie Wiley m. Mark Anthony Andrews

I am not sure on the spelling of Taulbee/Tolby through the years. All I really know is that it was spelled Tolby in all the records I have of Mary Margaret Tolby.

Pam, in reference to the spelling Tolby, we discussed this a few weeks ago about how the Taulbee variation came about. Thomas went to Indiana rather than stay in KY and his descendants were educated in a different location than those in KY. I am still leaning toward the idea that the spelling TAULBEE was imposed on the KY lines by the school system.

It is also possible that some of the Taulbee male lines have died out. All it takes is a generation with no male heirs who survive to have children. That can make tracing a bit more complicated.

Hi cousins!

This is my first time sending to the list. I just recently found this listing and have already received a lot of information about my ancestors. Here's the beginning of my family tree:

My father:

JOHN W ROGERS b. 15 Mar 1916 - East Moline IL married WANDA SOFIA CHARNOWSKI

his father: JOHN WILLIAM ROGERS b.18 Sep 1877 - Campton KY his mother: FANNIE EVELECE BRYANT b. 16 May 1889 - Hazel Green KY

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

JOHN WILLIAM ROGERS' father: ELIHUE JASPER ROGERS b. Wolfe Co. KY mother: ELIZABETH JANE GOODWIN b. 18 Jan, 1848

FANNIE EVELEECE BRYANT's father: JOHN DUDLEY BRYANT mother: MARGARET JANE TAULBEE

I have different dates on Elihue Jasper Rogers' birth date. I've seen it: 12 Jan 1845 and 2 Aug. 1845. I was going to send for the birth certificate, but now I'm not sure which date or if it matters when I send the request.

Another question on John Dudley Bryant's line if anyone has anything.

Taulbee and crossposting (moravia@doitnow.com, 01/12/98 13:09) Resent-From: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com To: taulbee-l@rootsweb.com

The following are parts of what was posted to the listowners list as a partial explanation of why an individual was blocked from participating in any rootsweb mail list. You may want to reconsider posting the same message to a number of lists and take the time to paste the message into seperate messages so they do not hit the server all at once. I have removed the name of the individual concerned because that is not important to this message. I thought maybe the why of some of the no nos should be explained.

...Quote:

First, you need to understand that cross-posting to many lists via a CC: line is very hard on the servers. Why? Because CCed mail all hits the server simultaneously and launches delivery to multiple lists simultaneously, thus defeating the software we use to keep the load balanced on the servers....

Posting lost child notices, virus warnings, FCC scares, etc., is not OK. Why? Because those offtopic posts tend to resonate across all the lists, and it really beats up the servers. Karen and I just spent $5,200 on memory upgrades largely necessitated by the recent FCC hoax postings.

That's $5,200 straight out of Karen and Brian's pockets, because RootsWeb doesn't even cover its ordinary costs.

But usually we pretty much ignore inappropriate posts. Folks make mistakes, and it's easy to forget that list operations cost real money when you're living off the generosity of the other folks who have chosen to support RootsWeb

end of quote.

Taulbee and AOL (moravia@doitnow.com, 01/14/98 16:46) Resent-From: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com To: taulbee-l@rootsweb.com

This is directed at subscribers on AOL. AOL has a bad habit of every so often deciding that a user does not exist and rejects messages as user unknown. The number of bounces has caused a couple of aol subscribers to be unsubbed. The last AOL address to be rejected as user unknown was RevaAlvis@aol.com I sent a message to the postmaster at aol com, did not get a reply, but the bounces stopped. If you are on aol and have another service, could you send me the other email address just in case aol starts telling me you no longer exist and I can check. Or, if you suddenly stop getting list or other mail, check with aol to make sure it is not listing you as an unknown user.

Just trying to fill in information gaps and wondering if any of our cousins would have at their fingertips information on children of John Combs and Juda Taulbee. Juda was born April 18th 1853 in Breathitt County, Ky, daughter of Isaac Taulbee and Lillian Margaret King. I have no children listed. Also have no information on which of the Combs John is.

As a result of the following email, I placed A large image on the Taulbee Web page. The young man would appreciate any assistance in identifying the individuals in the photo. The othere photos he sent have already appeared on the page. I need to warn you that it is a very large photo, 1.2 MB. I left it full sized in order not to reduce the size of the faces. Depending upon the speed of your modem, it could take a while to load. Beneath the image is black line drawing showing who some of the individuals are.

hi there. I sent you some pictures today one of Susanna F. Taulbee and Sarah Etta Taulbee. I also included a group photo that was taken circa 1900, maybe a little earlier with about 40 men in it. The best we can figure, we think it is a polling (voting) day because the lack of women in the picture, or it may have been a meeting of the masons. Anyway, lets see if we can get some of these folks identified. i believe the picture to be taken in Morgan Co. KY because my great great grandfather, James Robert Cockerham/Cochran is in this picture. Give it a shot. Lemme know what happens. Thanx. Corbet

Cousin Nadine has sent additional photos for her album. I have placed on line a photo of William Jasper Taulbee. Not yet on line are photos of John Dial Taulbee and Margaret Jane Taulbee, daughter of Polly Dunn and William Wayne Taulbee. These will probably not get there for a day or two. I am going to have to redisign the photo pages so they don't take so long to load. Rather than place all of a cousin's photos on a single page, I will probably make a table of contents and place each photo on a page of its own so you don't have to wait for so many to load at one time.

It would be nice if some of you could come up with good naratives to go with the photos.

For those of you are new subscribers, we now have quite a few photos of our line placed on the part of our web page called the Taulbee Pages.

http://www.doitnow.com/~moravia/index.html

Once there, click on the Taulbee Pages. When the pages load, scroll down to the photos. When I redesign the pages, each of you who sent photos will still have your own album, but there will be a table of contents page for each of you to your individual photos.

Fellow List Cousins, I continue to search for your old Taulbee pictures. Almost everyone I write to or call on can find at least one old Taulbee picture or knows of a cousin, aunt, uncle or sibling that has one. I have spent countless hours writing to the Kentucky newspapers, journals, and relatives. Please, help me find these pictures. Most can be printed on laser at any copy shop for about $2.00. I've talked with many people who with great remorse tell stories of old homesteads burning with all the pictures in them, we have here an opportunity to get those memories back for these people and record them for all to enjoy. I'll continue my search, and thanks to Robert George, we'll all get to enjoy and reap the benefits. I do hope you'll chip into this effort. Nadine

Subject: How to Copy a Descendants Chart from FTM Resent-Date: Thu, 22 Jan 1998 15:58:19 -0800 (PST) Resent-From: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com Date: Thu, 22 Jan 1998 18:04:00 -0600 From: "Pam Wiley" <pavel@fastlane.net> To: <taulbee-l@rootsweb.com>

Hello, Taulbee/Tolby Group!

Thanks to Alice, I now have a copy of Rose's Book. I have spent most of the past several days adding to my Tolby information on FTM ver. 4. I had written Bob, asking if he wanted a GEDCOM of my information.

He politely answered that it would be much better to copy it to a file and include the information of just my Tolby branch. He also suggested that I let you know how it is done in FTM.

1. Open a Descendant Chart. Make sure you have highlited the subject you want on the Family Page. 2. Copy the the outline (Descendants of......) by pushing "Edit" in the top bar and choose "Copy Outline Descendant Tree" 3. Open a word processor. I use WIN 95 Word Pad. Paste your Outline D.Tree and save it! 4. Once your file is in the word processor, you can cut and paste if you wish. You can use this file as an attachment (not to groups!) or cut and paste to an e-mail as I have done below.

Please roll to the very bottom as I have added some more information about our Taulbee/ Tolby info.

I found some mistakes in spelling, and other things in the book. My grandfather, Otta Earl Henderson's second marriage was completely left out! I also can give some new info I found written on a photo of Thomas T. Tolby that is not in the book. It was a folder including four photos, the first was of Thomas Tolby, his daughter, Mary Margaret Tolby Henderson, her son, Otta Earl Henderson, and his son, by his first marriage, Forrest Evan Henderson. Under each picture was each person's name and date of birth! I did not even know of Thomas Tolby until recieving the photos last spring! Under all four photos, there is a statement " The Passing Of A Century"---Forrest was born June 7, 1900, a century and a couple of months after his great-grandfather.

I am willing to help anyone I can with the Thomas Tolby branch.

I received this query. Nothing in my data bases and in Rose's book the only Jennie is a Tolbe born in the 1860s, and the only Jeanette was born in the 1960. We know Rose missed a lot of Taulbees. Anyway, with her surnames, probably a connection with at least some of you.

We are researching RAWE, and we have a George M. Rawe (age 21) who married Jennie TAULBER (age 17) 29 Nov 1911 at the Newport, Ky courthouse. Their witnesses: Peter MERTES and Stella RAWE, Pastor M. J. LEUCK. George died 1919 and is buried St. Johns' Cemetery on Licking Pike, Newport. There is also a tombstone Jennie RAWE died 1915. George M. Rawe is my husbands' Grandfather, and we have no information on Jennie. One question has always been the spelling of her name TAULBER, we had information it could have been TAULBEE.

If you have any information that could shed light on this we'd appreciate it. Also, if we could share any of our info we'd be happy to. On my side we are researching names Breathitt Co. HALL, MILLER. Also, LYKINS, SPARKS, VERMILLION, BRADSHAW to name a few.

I have broken all the photos on the Taulbee pages into seperate web pages. Should make loading much faster. I believe they should all load, but if someone would check and let me know if any are not. Also, would those who sent them to me check and make sure I have identified them correctly and if you want to add to the narrative, just send it to me.

Also, since they are all only one photo per page, if any of you build your own web page and have need of one or more of the photos, and do not want to use the space a photo takes, just link to the page with the photo. The reader will have to use the <back> key to return to your page.

I am currently researching Keith lineage (among others). I have seen both the Keith name & Taulbee name mentioned together. Following info was just sent, but didn't see it mentioned on your page:

Check on a Joann "Candy" Keith daughter of William married a Taulbee the last time in Breathitt Co. Lost track of her and children after that. John E McIntosh

Does this name look familiar to you? I don't have a Joann Keith as the daughter of William, but....

Thanks.

Kathy

None of the three Keiths mentioned in Rose's book fit this. Thought I would check with you as we have already learned, Rose's book is far from complete.

I checked the Breathitt County Marriages Carole posted, as Well as the Magoffin and Wolfe County, but found nothing.

Hi, everyone. I returned from England last Monday. The trip was, as I'd predicted, much work and little fun (except for perhaps a few pubs at night - can't miss those!).

I did have a chance, however, to spend a few hours in the library of a genealogist society in Central London last day I was there. Unfortunately (and notwithstanding the fact that the folks there were extremely helpful), it was far too little time. I found no Talby/Talbee/Tolby/Taulbee on any of the published lists of Passengars and Immigrants. The published lists, of course, don't rule out the fact of many who for whatever reason may not have wanted to give their real names or who were unrecorded, etc. I was told by some folks over there, however, that Talbot or Taillebois does sound like a likely precursor. Apparently both of these were families of some prominence during English history. In fact, I noticed on my way into Westminster Abbey this time that there is a statue to some Talbot guy (forgive my impudence). I did stumble across several tracings of Geo. Washington's lineage in some back issues of American Genealogist Society, and there were Taillboys listed. Was this a variant, too?

Friends of mine in England have suggested that another way to go about it would be to trace back from the other side of the water. In other words, if a Talby/Talbee/Talbot/whatever could be found over there whose ancestor's son, brother, cousin, etc. was known to have immigrated to America in the right timeframe, it could narrow things down. My friends' son teaches at Oxford University, and to that end (and as he has time) maybe we can chase it down eventually.

In the interim, I have to keep wondering who Edward Talbee was and where he came from.

Taulbee, Gerald H. wrote: > > Hi, everyone. I returned from England last Monday. The trip was, as > Thanks for the attempt. I spent many hours in our local genealgoical library before I found mention of Edward her in Arizona.

I have a feeling someone is going to have to search records not in libraries, but in govenment or church archives. I have the impression that if it were in a library, it would not be so difficult to find.

The IGI has shown us where there were concentrations of TALBY during the 15 and 1600s. They do not show a connection, but they give us the names of locations and churches to start.

England is set up so that it almost takes a professional genealogist to trace anything. I am not to the point I am willing to fork over the money it would take. The hobby is interesting, but not that interesting. What I am hoping is that more and more people will do what is being done here and transcribe information and put it on the web. England holds a crown copyright on much original genealogical material so permission is required to transcribe. It is being given on the basis that the information cannot be sold. That takes away the economic incentive some might have for transcribing.

Gerald, April wrote that she was thinking of going to England sometime in the future. You might let her know what you looked at so she would not have to retrace your steps.

and there were Taillboys > listed. Was this a variant, too?

I think we have to consider any phonetic similarity as a possibility, even John Talby's name in Salem has inconsistant spelling. Remember I wrote earlier that a British genealogist suggested that Talby and Dalby were (at least in English pronuciation) phonetic equivilants. Well there are far more Dalbys listed in records I have found than Talby. > > Friends of mine in England have suggested that another way to go about > it would be to trace back from the other side of the water. You are probably right. If the records exist, that is where they are. I wonder how many were destroyed in the bombings during WWII?

> > In the interim, I have to keep wondering who Edward Talbee was and where > he came from.

Given the history of Maryland, i see two possibilities. I feel the most likely is that he was a descendant (grandson or great grandson) of Stephan who moved from Salem to Rhode Island. The other possibility is that both Charles Stuarts transported political undesirables as well as common criminals to Maryland. That is how our original Hitchcock ancestor arrived there.

During the Protectorate, Puritans invaded and seized Maryland, putting and end to the religious freedom Maryland was created for. The time frame is wrong for him to have come with them.

Title: The Cherokee Indians and Those Who Came After Notes for a History of the People who Settled W.North Carolina Author:Nathaniel C.Browder list: Birchfield,Jesse in 1850 with Margaret,Robert,Martin Hesikiah Also-1860 Birchfield,Samuel, Rosanah,William,Wilson,Ezekial,John,Joel, and Vienna. These families can be found in Cherokee County,North Carolina 1850-1860.

In my opinion, it is the tie to "Cherokee County" that might have started the talk of Indian blood. I am basing this on a rumor in my own family that my grandfather was American Indian...turns out he was of Pottowotomie Shawnee,Oklahoma where my father was born...he was also a missionary born of a Baptist missionary and no proof was ever found to lead us into "Indian theory".

We can place the Taulbee,Birchfield, and Hitchcock name from Maryland to North Carolina...I would like to see any documents that would lead us to suspect a marriage ect into the Indian Tribes.

I for one have often looked at the 1907 papers of James Franklin Taulbee (assisted by his father John Dial Taulbee) and wondered what on earth the man was going on about with the "Norman" name variant. I don't know that this would interest anyone else but I know we've had the discussion on the name spelling and origin topic several times and for those who would like to have more information...here goes.

On October 1,1906 Thomas E.Pickett,M.D.,LL.D read before the Filson Club his theory of English Speaking People being descendend from Scandinavians rather than the Teutons, from the Normans vs the Germans. (He presented a large number of Surnames, to include: the following.)

pg.209"Tabor,Talbot,Talebote,TAULBEE, and Tallboy, are supposed to have the same derivation, from Talebois or Taillebois,a name which goes back to the forest of Normandy,Tailles and Bois, apparantly an equivalent for the English "underwood" from Taillebois, a cutter of taillis(underbush). William Preston Taulbee is a typical Norman name. Major William Taulbee was a soldier in the Mexican war and in the war between the states.Nine of his descendents are now in the military service of the United States, two of them graduates of West Point."

I am very much afraid that Thomas Pickett's theory make leaps of logic that he could not supprot with evidence. While part of it may well be true, other parts seem made out of whole cloth, so I am cautious about what he says.

Taulbee is not a typical Norman name. Not with that spelling, anyway. If it were, I would find examples of it in the French phone directories. I have not found it, nor any of the possible variants, in the directories of Paris or Normandy, except for Talbert and Talbot with Talbot being by far the more common. I found no examples of any form of Taillebois. The only examples I have ever found of that variant are in the IGI for the 12 century in England, not since.

> Major William Taulbee was a soldier in the Mexican war and in the war > between the states.Nine of his descendents are now in the military > service of the United States, two of them graduates of West Point."

This is nonsense. William Taulbee was a corporal in the War with Mexico. (See below) As for two of his descendants graduating from West Point, his son, William Preston Taulbee, as a member of Congress, certainly had the ability to apoint them to the Point. I have no information either way on that. Any rank of Major for William, above, would have had to be an honory rank, not uncommon in Kentucky and other parts of the south. TAULBEE, William H., Mary A., WC-14045, 6 May 1905 & SC 1305, both KY, srv Co C, 3rd KY Vol Inf as Cpl. In another version of this Index, Mr. White listed William's rank as Private.

We are going to have to do what Gerald has suggested, and find the English link to the Talby who sailed to the Bay Colony. I have yet to find a list of the earliest colonists in the Bay Colony, nor of the first ships that sailed there. There is where the first answer is going to be. Once we can find that, we can work back and find out if Talby is a descendancy of the French, or a variant of Dalby, as has also been suggested.

Nadine wrote that Thomas Pickett has written this:

> Major William Taulbee was a soldier in the Mexican war and in the war > between the states.

When I wrote that this was nonsense, I had commited the cardinal sin of responding to a post before I had my morning 2 liter bottle of Mountain Dew. Never post without that Mountain Dew.

It is true that he was only a Corporal in the Mexican War. But there is that little thing called the War of the Northern Agression which started when he was only 37. It is possible that he earned a commission during that war, although I find no record of his service in any of the on line unit muster rosters from Morgan or Perry Counties, and his widow apparently did not apply for the KY pension she would have been eligible as a Confederate Widow. Also, it would seem that service in the Rebel Army would have made him inelligible for the Mexican War Pension.

In any case, his son's election to the Congress of the United States would be the way his descendants could have received appointments to West Point. I tried to find an on line list of West Point graduates, but could not find it. Seems like I had found one at one time, but the search engines are turning up zilch for me today.

Sorry, Nadine, I owe you one.

While it is considered a no no to post email to a list in html, more and more newer versions of email programs are including html. Rather than just rant and rave and ban it, let's ask this question:

Is there anyone whose mail program cannot read html posts? You will know if some of your posts look like garbage. If no one answers yes, I am not going to worry about it on this list. If there is someone who replies that it gives them problems, then we should all turn off or avoid using any attributes that cause the mail to be sent in html.

That being said, please do not use html attributes that assign color or include images of any kind in the message because unless we all use Netscape, I.E, or the New versions of Eudora Pro, we will have people who have email filled with garbage. I am not going to try to guess about AOL because what AOL does today may be different than what it does tomorrow.

If you have problems receiving mail in HTML format, post the fact to the list. Otherwise, I will ignore html on this list. Be advised that some other lists may not be so liberal, and in the moderated lists such as the soc.genealogy.surnames groups, the moderators may reject your post.
