In the very near future, it will impossible to post to any rootsweb list which contains an attachment, html, address card, or forwarded message ( all of which act as if they were attachments.) Please make sure your email sends in plain text only and if you want to forward a message, paste it into a new message or the list server will block it. This is not the doing of the list owners, but of the manager of the list server. From: Tim Pierce Thu 21:49 Subject: Blocking Attachments Resent-From: listowners-announce@rootsweb.com To: listowners-announce@rootsweb.com Hi, folks -- Just to let you know, we're in the final stages of testing a SmartList hack that blocks file attachments (including VCARDS), HTML messages and enriched text postings. This note is to let you know how it works. When a poster sends something to a mailing list written in HTML, or with an attached file, the list server will send the poster's message back to them, with a note at the bottom explaining the plain-text requirement at RootsWeb. A COPY OF THIS REJECTION MESSAGE WILL BE SENT TO YOU AS WELL! That's because the poster may write back to you to complain or to ask for help, and it can be pretty confusing if they write a reply to a message that you never saw. So when you suddenly start getting messages from YOURLIST-L-REQUEST@rootsweb.com, quoting some ungodly HTML mess that you never saw before, don't be alarmed. :-) It just means the list server is rejecting a MIME message that was sent to your list, and that you may get a response from the poster. This change is not currently something the listowner can turn on and off. Attachments will be blocked from every list alike. This might not be to the taste of some listowners, so we'll consider closely whether it would be safe to make it an optional setting. Thanks to Marc Nozell for finding the SmartList patch that was used as the basis for this fix! This index is available in lots of Libraries and some of the original books are in the Health Departments and Libraries, some of the books have been removed and now they only have the indexes. These indexes give the birth name, mother, date, county where born and the certificate number. I have a set of the indexes here at home. I have never tried to order a birth certificate, but you can get any death certificate from the state of Ky for a small fee. There is nothing private in Ky. I am leaving sometime next week to return to God's Country, the Pacific Northwest. I will be gone from 4 - 8 weeks, depending on how well Mom holds up. Louise Gaskill will manage the list while I am gone. You can reach her via the list or at HGask10543@aol.com 2. I have set the list to unsub at 20 bounces of your mail. I had to put in some limit. Some of you on AOL go away and don't check your mail for a few days which causes it to bounce. Then AOL does not need a reason to bounce. It is one of the most technically unstable providers I have ever dealt with. If I did not set a high number, it would unsub you during that time. I will set the threashold higher if the list ever gets really active. Most of us list owners wish AOL would just go away, but it is not going to happen, so we deal with it. 3. Partly because of problems with AOL, the rootweb programmers are designing a filter to reject any of the following (not sure when it will take effect): 1. Posts with attachments. This means do not forward a post or compose in html, it will be rejected when the changes take place. 2. posts which appear to be spam. This last is because spammers hit the list and not all list managers are smart enough to close their list to posting by nonsubscribers, as we have done; 3. Posts with multiple addresses. This crossposting puts heavy loads on the listserver as they all hit at once and has led to expensive crashes in the future. If you need to post to more than one list, send each indivually. Again, not sure when the software will be inplace. 4. I am going to visit the small cemetery on Wells Bench, near Orofino, Idaho, where Emily Bailey, daughter of Paulina Taulbee and Gabriel Bailey lived, and see if there are any clues. Mom wants to spend a lot of time at her sister's so I will most likely be bored out of my skull and will spend the time transcribing the tombstone inscriptions as well as the Orofino Cemetery at Riverside. Will just have to see what ghosts I can uncover. 5. Louise and I have input over 2,400 of Carole's obits. With twelve letters to go, we will probably fall betwee 3,000 and 3,500 entries in all. We are now officially the largest such collection in the system, all because of Carole's foresight and hard work over the years. We have had to go to a read only system where no one other than Louise or myself can post because of the sophomoric jerks who just could no understand what the work NO means when it says Post no Queries. Queries are to be on query pages, obits on obit pages. If you have an obit related to this vast family in anyway, send it to Louise or myself for inclusion in this collection. If you have additional information about a person in the obits, that can be added by us as a response to the obit. 6. Still need some people to proofread as they find time. Joyce has offered to help but when her computer heard about it, it crashed her hard drive. She is waiting to get that fixed. It would take one person a very long time to proofread. While no one should ever proof their own work, Louise and I will get it done over the next hundred years or so as we find time. We do not want typos in cyberspace. 7. If one of you is addicted to genealogy and needs a project that is different, you might consider anyalzing these obits and creating family group charts, or whatever, to see how the relationships go. Some of these cover two or three generations. Louise has done a bit of this, but this new work she is doing extracting our family names from the different census documents is more important. What you can do is see how the information supports, corrects, or adds to the information we already have in Rose's book or elsewher. The documents created could end up as part of a web page. 8. I will probably be able to check mail only two or three times while gone, to make sure my mail box, supposedly unlimited, does not fill up or messages are deleted after being there too long. I will unsub from all my lists except this one, which will help considerable. That's all for now. Will not be leaving before Monday if anyone wants to wish me luck. See you all when I get back From: moravia@doitnow.com 05/26/98 17:17 Subject: Taulbee birthdates Resent-From: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com To: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com Before I leave for my trip, I want to share with you the birthdates and death dates of the children of James Perry Taulbee and Sophia Augusta Wickner Taulbee sent to me by Dick McDavid. I found it faster than other search engines. It identifies obits, marriages, census, and other on line documents containing the surname you search for. http://cgi.rootsweb.com/surhelp/srchall.html Also, while I am here, for those of you with French roots, and who can read French, I found a website with numerous on line files, zipped for easy downloading, mostly mariages dating from 1455 - 1892 at http://www.es-conseil.fr/pramona/depouill.htm From: Annacarole Wed 01:44 Subject: census Resent-From: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com To: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com Please note that Breathitt County mixed the 1870 and 1880 census. Also there are some names missing on one of them, can't remember which, but believe it is the 1870. Wondered why they ages didn't line up. Some friends had seen the original and they didn't match what i had. Then a friend ordered the census and sure enough some of those listed were wrong and missing. So beware those two census. Carole From: moravia@doitnow.com Wed 13:01 Subject: Taulbee photos Resent-From: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com To: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com Bob Warren has sent me antother dozen or so photos which I probably will not get to before leaving. A couple of you have offered some storage space on your servers. There are enough of these to devote a web page to the family, descendants, and near relatives of James Perry Taublee. If one of you would like to do this, I will scan them and email them to you so you can construct the page. Again, not certain I can do this before I leave. I am also going to be talking to our local ISPs about a bulk rate for web storage space. I could use the free servers, but I hate the windows that pop down with advertising. Webspace construction is not difficult with the editors in netscape. Virtually no html knowledge is required. Actually, if you know the coding, they can be constructed in word perfect (or any other word processor), saved as an ascii text for dos document with an htm extention. My opening page was constructed in Word Perfect. Let me know if this interests you and I will get back to you as soon as I can, probably after I get back. A word of caution about the French marriage documents I told you about yesterday. The poster did not save them as plain text for dos. Instead they appear (from the information in the header) to have been composed in Microsoft Works for Windows 95 and probably saved as text for windows. Anyway, MS Works for Win 3.1 will not convert them. Word perfect for win 3.1 will do a very good job if you load them as ascii text for dos.
