Taulbee Family Discussion Group Public Archives May 1999 From: Bob George 5/7/99 8:03 PM Subject: [TAULBEE-L] new photos Resent-From: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com To: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com I have added two new photos to the page with John Martin Taulbee's photo. I have added to Arnold Taulbee, son of George Washington Taulbee and also the father of another George Washington Taulbee several scanned images. The first several are the Wolfe Countyfuneral Book of George Washington Taulbee, 1858-1940. It contains lots of names of those who were at the funeral. The final couple are a letter from the VA concerning the death of Arnold Taulbee in WWII, and a photo of the crew of the USS Jeuneau. Getting slowly caught up. Talk to you all later. From: Bob George 5/15/99 7:47 AM Subject: [TAULBEE-L] Banks vrs Taulbee Resent-From: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com To: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com There are a number of cases in which a Taulbee just cannot be fit into any of our lines, yet comes from the area and time belonging to the Taulbees. There seems to have been some cases where a Taulbee is not actually a Taulbee by birth, but a Banks who was raised by a Taulbee, or took the Taulbee name. I have been told by more than one of an expression that if a number of new Taulbees moved into a area, such as Wolfe County, it was said that "here comes a bunch of Banks changing their names to Taulbee." I don't know what this does to our research except make it impossible for some to trace the actual roots. Many of the Banks, and I am sure others, did not always use midwives, records were not always kept, so it will be almost impossible to prove unless someone still alive remembers it happening. If you were taken in by a Taulbee, use of the Taulbee surname would be natural. My belief is that if you are raised by a Taulbee, you are a Taulbee by heritage and culture, but tracing the actual biological ancestors becomes more difficult. This is just something to consider when you can't connect with anything. Back as late as WWII, if you went into the service, your name was what you said it was, no questions asked. Early Social Security only required an affidavit, not a birth certificate. So just another mystery that may never be solvable. But something to think about. From: "The Henner's" 5/15/99 9:55 AM Subject: Re: [TAULBEE-L] Banks vrs Taulbee To: Bob George CC: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com FYI There is much truth to this. Lula Taulbee, my great grandmother, her second marriage was to Matthew Banks. They had one daughter, Hannah Banks. However, they raised another child. This child was raised as Marie Banks. Everyone in the family always said Aunt Marie was not a child of Matthew and Lula's but never knew who her real parents were. I always heard that Marie was an orphan and was taken in by Matthew. I realize this would be turning things around but after reading what Bob wrote I am wondering if by chance she could have been a Taulbee raised by Banks and took the Banks name. Lula's child by her first marriage, Abel Wages/Wagers, shows up on the census as Abel Banks. I know as a fact he was never adopted by Matthew but when census were taken and Abel was listed he was recorded as Abel Banks. In cases like this it makes it very difficult to trace the family. I'm sure this has happened many many times and give us doing research big head aches. Being part of a group like this is probably one of the best ways to straighten out at least some of these problems. Thanks to everyone who takes the time to respond to the list. Mary Henn From: Cyndy63@aol.com 5/17/99 7:25 PM Subject: [TAULBEE-L] Taulbee & Banks Resent-From: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com To: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com Bob, Here is another case scenario for you in relation to the Banks - Taulbee dilemma and this is what has occurred in our Taulbee family. For many years my Grandfather (Bennie) who was born as a Banks but later was told he was a Taulbee and was raised as a Taulbee, could not place the connection of the two names. He remembers his older family members arguing over whether they were Taulbees or Banks. His mother, Peggy Taulbee(AKA Maggie) who was the daughter of John CB Taulbee and the granddaughter of Preacher William Lee Taulbee, died when Bennie was just 2 years old. He wondered if maybe they had changed to Maggies last name instead of the Banks name. On a trip back to KY last year, I contacted several of the elderly Taulbees and a man named Jose Banks (some 90+ years old). They knew the answer to our long unanswered question of whether we were actually Banks or Taulbee! They told me that Preacher William Lee Taulbee met a woman named Bessie (possible Elizabeth) Banks. I believe Preacher Lee was married at the time to his first wife and the mother of John CB Taulbee, although I have nothing to document which marriage he was in other than the ages of the children. Bessie Banks became pregnant by Preacher Lee Taulbee and had his illegitimate child and named that child James Madison Banks. I don't know why she gave the child her last name instead of the fathers name of Taulbee unless it was because the child was illegitimate! Now this makes John CB Taulbee and the illegitimate child, James Madison Banks, half brothers. Both the sons of Preacher William Lee Taulbee. It is apparent that Preacher Lee played some role in James Madison Banks life because I have the marriage certificate that has Preacher Lees name on it. John CB Taulbee has a daughter named Maggie Taulbee and James Madison Banks has a son named Andrew Jackson Banks. They are 1st cousins who are later married by Preacher William Lee Taulbee. They keep the last name of Banks for a short period of time until Andrew Jackson Banks knowing he is the grandson of Preacher Lee Taulbee, changes his last name to Taulbee and we once again become Taulbees instead of Banks. Realistically, I guess we are actually Taulbees twice over because of Preacher William Lee who is my ggggrandfather twice! I guess there could have been hard feelings back then from those that resented the children who were not legitimate and thus the saying "here comes a bunch of Banks changing their name to Taulbee." This is another case of Taulbee and Banks confusion and had made it difficult to trace the tree until I was able to talk to the elders who knew! Have a query about this. From: Bob George 5/27/99 2:53 PM Subject: [TAULBEE-L] Taulbee - South Resent-From: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com To: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com Rose was not certain that the Jeremiah South she lists was the son of Jeremiah and Caroline South. The following inormation I have received muddies the water a bit more. Help is needed here to determine if we have a correctly identified line. Any help would be appreciated. The following is an edited response to Rose's information. Jeremiah Weldon South, Jr b. 23 Mar 1840 Breathitt Co., d. 7 Feb 1864, Civil War. Married Breathitt Co, Ky 1860 to Caroline Cope b. 22 Aug 1839, d. 29 Nov 1917. Children: .Jeremiah Weldon South, III b. 13 Mar 1863 Breathitt Co., d. 16 May 1896 Breathitt Co. Married Breathitt Co, Ky 1884 to Louisa Hargis b. 31 Dec 1869, d. 18 Dec 1954 .Addie South, b 23 Feb 1860, d. 20 Apr 1876. Jeremiah Weldon South, III had two children: Harlan South b. 12 Aug 1885, d. 22 Mar 1957. Married Emily Jane Perkins b 14 Dec 1883, Wolfe Co, Ky. Eudora South b. 9 Dec 1888, d. 11 Aug 1920. Married Blaine Short. Harlan South had several children, one which was my father (Herschel) According to the Taulbee web site, Jeremiah & Elizabeth m. in 1886 had 6 children (born between 1887 & 1898). Seems like there is a definite overlap. I can remember my father recalling his growing up in Breathitt Co. and did mention several Taulbees' by name. Sure wish there was some way to figure out what went on here between Elizabeth and Jeremiah. One never knows. If you stumble across any more data on this marriage, would certainly appreciate an update. Just another tidbit of info - - I knew there had to be a tie somewhere. Not on the South side of the Family though. Looking further at your web site, I noticed that John Taulbee m. America Blankenship. My Grandmother's name was Ida Blankenship and ties back into the same family as America's. America by the way was the daughter of William Henry Blankenship & Eunice "Nice" Stover. Small world, isn't it? On our website I have 4. Elizabeth Taulbee was born in December 1868.married Jeremiah South, Jr., probable son of Jeremiah South and Caroline (-?-) on December 14, 1886 in Breathitt County, Kentucky. Jeremiah was born in 1864.. Children of Elizabeth and Jeremiah: Madia South was born in April 1887. (Samuel?) Elsberry South was born in January, 1889. Edward South was born in April 1892. John W. South was born in March 1895. Jackson South was born in January 1896. Morton South was born in June 1898. We are given a situation where one of the following may have occured: 1. Jeremaiah did not marry Elizabeth or there was more than 1 Jeremiah south and Rose has the wrong parents identified. She idicates uncertainty about the parents. 2. Elizabeth was a first or second wife of Jeremiah and the marriage dates are wrong. We do not have a death date for Elizabeth unless one of you has it tucked away somewhere. 3. The children listed do not belong to this family. Rose was often very inaccurate with dates, and with her documentation destroyed, if may be difficult to figure this out. Any ideas would be appreciated.
