Andrew Taulbee 1775

Andrew Jackson Taulbee,* son of William Hitchcock Taulbee and Margaret Canady, was born about 1775/6 in Orange County, North Carolina. He married Elizabeth Allen in Gate City, Scott County, Virginia in 1829. This was his second marriage; the name of his first wife is unknown .

Andrew's middle name Jackson is based on Rose Taulbee's consistant referal to Andrew's son, Andrew Jackson Taulbee as A. J., Jr.

Andrew lived in North Carolina until 1825 then went to Virginia in 1829 following the death of his first wife.

Edwin Taulbee, Possibly a son of Andrew Jackson Taulbee and (-?-) was born 1790-1800. Edwin may be misplaced in the family tree and not a son of Andrew. Rose Taulbee in her Taulbee Family History assigned him to this family by process of elimination and circumstantial evidence, but stated she was not certain. Edwin married Lucille Williams.

1. William Taulbee was born July 6, 1829 and died March 5, 1913 in Bath County, Kentucky. He married twice: (1) Sarah Perkins on April 25, 1833 in Morgan County, Kentucky. Sara was born about 1830. She died between 1860 and 1864. She and William were known to be in Montgomery County, Ky in 1860. (Ref. Rose Taulbee's Family History); (2) Isabelle Bradford. Isabelle was born about 1830 and died July 7, 1916. Isabelle and William were married sometime between 1860 and 1864.

James H. Taulbee** was born in 1856 and died in in 1906. He married Ellen Davis about 1879 in Wolfe County, Kentucky. Ellen was born in 1859 in Wolfe County, and died in 1938.

I have used Rose's listing to maintain a standard reference but have no idea which is the correct listing. A son whose name I do not know was born in 1890 and 5 other children whose name I do not know died before 1900.

William Taulbee, son of Andrew Jackson Taulbee, was born in 1814 in Wilkes County, North Carolina and died agout 1885 in Humbolt, Nebraska. He married twice: (1) Mary Campbell, possibly the daughter of Allen Campbell. Mary was born in 1815 and died in 1835 in Hazel Green, Kentucky; 2) Mrs Hannah Perry on January 4, 1849 in Atchison County, Missouri.

There are two stories as to why the spelling of the name in this line changed from
Taulbee to Tolby. This first, the more interesting, is also probably the less likely:

William's sons changed the spelling of their name from Taulbee to Tolby following the assasination of U. S. Representative William Preston Taulbee, of Slayerville, Kentucky, by Charles Kincaid, a correspondant for the Louisville Times. on February 28, 1890. Kincaid had written a story accusing Representative Taulbee of misconduct with a woman in a government office, a scandal refered to by Washington, D. C. papers as The Patent Office Scandal. Representative Taulbee is said to have picked up Kincaid, a much smaller man, by the ears and otherwise physically or verbally abused him. As a result Kincaid shot him on the Capitol steps and the blood is still visible today. William's sons were so disgusted by the scandal that they changed the spelling of their last name to Tolby.

Not all Taulbees felt Representative Taulbee was at fault. Some felt that the articles by Kincaid were scurrilous and that the fault for the fued between Taulbee and Kincaid was Kincaid's fault. Rose Taulbee's Taulbee Family History contains a copy of a newspaper article defending Representative Taulbee. In any case, Kincaid was not punished, the procecutors deciding that anyone who had acted the way Representative Taulbee did deserved to be killed.

The second comes from Manley Tolby, below. It was simply that Manley's grandfather, Andrew Jackson Tolby, could not read not write. Nor could his parents. The name was at that time pronounced Tolby regardless of spelling and it was written down as Tolby. Manley reported having a difficult time finding the Taulbee branch of the family because of the difference in spelling.

Both stories are from individuals who knew Manley, so I am not choosing between them.

He married Mary Elizabeth Scott, daughter of Nathanial Scott* and Margaret Basye.** Mary was born July 8, 1865 in Nortonville Kansas and died at age 101 on August 8, 1966 in Glendale, Arizona.

* Nathanial Scott, son of Nathanial Scott, Sr. and Mary Shannon, was born October 22, 1837 and died September 7, 1897 in Blue Mountain, Missouri.

**Margaret Basye, daughter of John Basye and Mary E. Rogers, was born February 29, 1844 and died March 14, 1935. She married Nathanial Scott on October 10, 1859 in De Kalbe, Missouri. Mary E. Rogers was born in Nortonville, Kansas and died in Blue Eyes, Missouri.

Manley Alfred Tolby was born August 9, 1883 in Blue Eye, Missouri and died December 20, 1971 in Phoenix, Arizona. He married twice: (1) Rilla Haddock. Rilla died November 18, 1935. (2) Cecelia Marie Lora.

Andrew Jackson migrated to knox Co., Ky. with his wife's family, the Donaldsons. It is said he acquired about 4000 arcres of land on Big Richland Creek. He was a Baptist Minister as well as a farmer and according to the history of the family by J. D. Taulbee, he was a very intelligent man. [pg 125]

Byrd Taulbee was born in 1874. Byrd is a child by Elizabeth by her first marriage and he used the name Taulbee. According to Rose Taulbee, he lived with his grandparents, Andrew Jackson and Mary Taulbee. He married Isabel (-?-). He was a lawyer and a teacher in addition to owning a grocery store in Lexington. He was murdered by a black man during a robbery of his store.

5. Newton A. Taulbee was born October 21, 1869 and died July 25, 1905 when he was ambushed and shot to death by George Banks. He married Larura (-?-) in 1891. Laura was born in March of 1872. This was not Newton's first marriage.

Lloyd B. Taulbee was born in June of 1888.

George Taulbee was born February 19, 1891 and died July 24, 1896.

John A. Taulbee was born April 7, 1893 and died November 8, 1962. He is buried in Nosy John Rose Cemetery, Wolfe County, Kentucky. He married Bessie E. Landsaw, daughter of Henry Landsaw and Belle Combs. Bessie was born March 6, 1896 in Breathitt County, KY ad died February 25, 1971. She is also buried in Nosy John Rose Cemetery.

Wilburn Taulbee was born July 23, 1895 and died July 15, 1958. He is buried in John Rose Cemetery. He married Bertha Carson, daughter of George Carson. Bertha was born in 1897.

Etta M. Taulbee was born in February, 1897.

Nora Taulbee was born December 27, 1899 and died September 19, 1901.

Marion Asa Taulbee was born in 1901 and died in 1905. Marion is buried in John Rose Cemetery.

Wiley Taulbee, Probably son of Andrew Jackson Taulbee, was born in 1829/30. This is a probable but not certain relationship. Wiley married Polly Tutt on October 10, 1849 in Morgan County, Kentucky. Polly was born in 1828. He later married Anna Birch (there are some who say Anna's name was Shoemaker). Anna was born in 1830. I am estimating both Wiley and Anna's death as being between 1875 and 1880. (See John Bowen Taulbee.)

Rose Taulbee again placed Wiley, as she did his brother Samuel, above, among the children of Andrew Jackson Taulbee, but left open the possibility that he was Andrew's nephew, a possible son of Andrew's brother, Samuel Taulbee, son of Samuel Taulbee and Rebecca Birchfield. However she claimed to have information that Wiley and Samuel were brothers and their mother was a Banks. She thought it probable that Andrew had married twice before he married Ellizabeth Allen in 1829. This is something she has left to us to prove or disprove.

2. Mary J. Taulbee was born in 1864. She married (-?-) Shull.

3. Margaret Taulbee was born in 1866. She is not known to have married. Rose had her in Wolfe County, Kentucky in 1880.

4. James W. Taulbee was born October 19, 1867 and died May 19, 1943. He married Sena Nickell, daughter of Monroe Nickell and Caroline (-?-) on December 18, 1891 in Morgan County, Kentucky. Sena was born in June, 1872.

Children of James and Sena:

Matilda Taulbee was born August 10, 1895.

Arthur Taulbee was born October 28, 1897. Rose listed him as married to Pearlie Terrill. However the copy of Rose's book I received in June of 1997 has Pearlie's name lined out with "wrong Arthur" written to the side.

Golden B. Taulbee was born September 20, 1900 and died in 1960 in Wolfe County. She married Raleigh Rice. Raleigh was born in 1898 and died in 1986 in Wolfe County, Kentucky. Both are buried in Hazel Green Cemetery.

Roland Taulbee was born July 25, 1902 in Wolfe County, Kentucky, and died September 6, 1994 in Magoffin County. He married Edna Golden Edwards, daughter of Jeff D. Edwards and Rebecca Rose on September 8, 1921 in Wolfe County. Edna was born July 23, 1904 and died November 21, 1985 in Wolfe County. Both are buried in Edwards Cemetery.

Raymond Taulbee was born February 18, 1907 and died February 25, 1992. He married Louella Nickell on March 17, 1927. Louella was born September 18, 1910.

Florence Stamper was born in November, 1893.

Stephen Stamper was born July 19, 1903 in Wolfe County, Kentucky.

6. Louisiana Taulbee was born in 1871 (Another possible date is born December 9, 1877 and died October 19, 1950). She married twice: (1)Frank Coldiron; (2) George W. Dalton. George was born March 3, 1878 and died October 18, 1953. Both are buried in Rose-Gibbs Cemetery on Trace Fork.

Floyd Coldiron was born January 12, 1896 and died February 14, 1942. He married Maggie Hounshell, daughter of Cordelia Hounshell, on June 24, 1915.

Darley L. Dalton was born in 1914.

7. John Bowen Taulbee was born in February, 1875 and died April 16, 1958. He married America Blankenship on March 9, 1890. America was born October 11, 1871 and died June 10, 1960. Both are buried in Tibbs Cemetery, Wolfe County, Kentucky

**Rose Taulbee said the following about John Bowen Taulbee:

John's parents died when he was quite young and he was taken in by "BAD D. ROSE" who was very cruel to him as well as to his own children. John's childhood was mostly very hard work and beatings, while living with the Rose family. "Bad D. Rose" was mentioned thusly in the Wolfe Co., Ky newspaper of that time. This was told me by a grandaughter. [pg 134] [This may allow us to estimate the deaths of his parents, Wiley Taulbee and Anna Birch as between 1875 and 1880.]

Oma May Dalton was born in 1912. She married Edgar Hollon, son of Jack Hollon and Laura Cockerham, on December 23, 1930 in Wolfe County. Edgar was born in February, 1910 and died October 5, 1994 in Campton, Kentucky. He his buried in Whisman-Taulbee Cemetery.

Elizabeth Taulbee married Don Longworthy.

Grace Taulbee was born in April, 1896 and died April 10, 1979 in West Liberty. She is buried in Taulbee Cemetery. She married David Dalton, brother of sister Lillie's husband John. David was born in 1895 and died in 1983.

Wiley Taulbee was born in 1901. He married twice: (1) July 20, 1922 in Wolfe County; (2) Bertha Bach.

Martha Taulbee was born in 1912 and died in 1987. She married John Henry Tibbs, son of Willie Tibbs and Lou Nickell, and nephew of John Tibbs, husband of Martha's sister, Mary Magadeline. John was born in 1908 and died May 4, 1982 in West Liberty Hospital. He is buried in Taulbee Cemetery.
