TAULBEE FAMILY DISCUSSION GROUPS TAULBEE-L AND TAULBEE-D PUBLIC ARCHIVES From - Sat Aug 09 10:15:32 1997 Reply-To: moravia@doitnow.com Subject: William Hitchcock One of the papers Rebecca and Denis gave me that I shared with you was a 1907 family history by Judge Taulbee of Texas who had William Hitchcock Taulbee born in Georgia, while Rose had him born in Baltimore County, Maryland as do other sources. Then I found that the DAR Patriots Index also has him born in Georgia and then serving in the Revolution in North Carolina. What about the possibility that Samuel Talbee moved his family to North Carolina via Georgia? The sources I have found do not really know when the family arrived in North Carolina, just that William served in the Orange County Militia. The time Samuel left Maryland and the time between, up to the Revolution is kind of silent. Maybe we need to look at some Georgia records if we can find any. General Sherman may have made that a bit difficult. Robert L. Page 131 Rose Taulbee's Book, Rose Adeline Taulbee, daughter of Andrew, married Hoy Childress in 1884. Question!. Did some of their male children change the spelling of the name to Childers? or Did Rose misidentify the surname? I tried to cheat and use the white pages to see which it should be, and both spellings of the name returned massive numbers of hits in Kentucky. Looking at the data I have received from cousins, I am wondering if this is one of those names that is pronounced the same way no matter how spelled and therefore spelling diverged. I think it is important to find out which way each descendant spelled the name and wonder if any of you have any difinitive information as to if Hoy was a Childress or a Childers and how the name may have been spelled by his different children and grand children. Please respond to the list so the answers can be archived for a future cousin who is bound to have the same question later on. Merci beaucoup tout le monde! -- Robert L. My name is Shandy Voyles, I'm living in the East Bay area of Northern Ca. right now. My mother, Kalyn Taulbee was born in Tulsa, Ok, Oct 18,1945, I have her birth certificate indicating that Grandma Grace and L.V. were married, but no dates, and I haven't tried to find either a marriage or divorce decree. Mother says that LV and my great-grandmother didn't get along, she was told that he went back to Ky to see about an inheritance and never returned, so she never knew him. I don't remember where I saw it, but the last info I had on him was that he was a contractor in the Monterey,Ca area when he died in 1960, a year before I was born, no info on where the family ended up after his death. I'll be on AOL this month, I don't know if I'll keep it after that, but I'll at least have an address through the University as soon as I figure out how to make it talk to me. For now, I can be reached at SVoyles591@aol.com. Looking forward to digging deeper, Shandy -- Robert L. The problem here is that the British burned the National Archives when they captured Washington during the War of 1812 and much of the census was lost. Anyway, I did find this: William Tolby, North Carolina Federal Census page 122. Once again, Ancestry did not bother to say where the marriage took place: Richard Shepard married Jane Talby on Oct 14, 1663. Source was Fredrick Baily's Early Mass Marriages Prior to 1800, pg 22. She had my 3rd g-grand mother before she married John C. Taulbee, word passed down is that this was out of wed lock. Tempy claimed in the census that her mother was born in NC. Mary Jane and Rebecca Birchfield. These are 4th and 5th g-grand mothers, I suspect they are aunt and niece. I would like to be able to trace this line. Margaret Canady: this is a 6th g-grandmother. I have little about her except her name and some speculation in Rose Taulbees book. Anne Jones. This is an 8th great grandmother, wife of William Hitchcock II of Baltimore and Calvert Counties, Maryland, and Samuel Talbee's mother-in-law. There are a number of books in the genealogy libraries that list her as a daughter of Richard Jones and Anne Gassaway. More recent research discredits this and speculates she was William Hitchcock's step sister. William's mother married William Jones of Calvert County after William Hitchcock I, died. There is discussion of this on our web page. Edward and Mary Talby: Where did they come from? I have seen an Edward in the IGI that fits a time line to make a connection with the Rhode Island Talbys but there is just not enough information except to be intrigued by the possibility. Last, a Taulbee family history written by J. D. Taulbee. Rose mentions this work in passing in her book, but gives no information about it. George ------ Surprise, Arizona ------------------------------------------------------------------------ From - Thu Aug 21 05:49:02 1997 From: April M Taulbee Subject: Let me introduce myself! Hello to Robert and all of my cousins. I am so excited to have discovered a mailing list devoted to Taulbee genealogy that I am up well past my bedtime reading all of the posts to the list thus far and looking at Robert's web site. Since the last time I really checked the web for any genealogical information for Taulbee was over a year ago, I was really surprised to find so much today. I have a number of general questions about our family research, but first let me tell you who I am. According to Rose Taulbee's book: 7-g-gf Edward and Mary Talby 6-g-gf Samuel Taulbee/Talbee and Elizabeth Hitchcock 5-g-gf William Hitchcock Taulbee and Margaret Canady 4-g-gf William Barry Taulbee and Nancy Cockerham 3-g-gf James Madison Taulbee and Ann Damurel (Dameron) 2-g-gf Levi Lamrey Taulbee and Mary E Taulbee g-gf Harry Lee Taulbee and Ava Shaffer gf Carl Donald Taulbee and Thelma Johnson (MI) pg.247 9. Dale Bruce Taulbee and Marilyn Ann Friz 10. (me) April Marie Taulbee I've had Rose's book for about 10 years now I'd guess, I think my uncle Carl Donald (Jr.) got it at a family reunion in Kentucky, and he gave me a photocopy of it. I've always had a strong interest in my family tree but have never done any research on my own. I keep thinking its something I'd like to have more time to do - like when I'm retired in about 30 years! So, for the most part I'm a complete neophyte about how to go about doing this kind of research or even where to begin. And, I don't know who I'm missing because I haven't started looking! I have wondered about the following: - Is Rose Taulbee deceased? - If so, are any of her direct descendants carrying on with her work? If yes, who? - If not, are there others (Taulbees or not) who are doing so? Or, do those who are doing Taulbee family research generally do their own research, drawing on information in Rose's book for leads but then doing independent confirmations of the findings? - For those on this list who are doing independent research, do you find that the information contained in her book is largely accurate or are there descrepancies? - Is the scale the same; i.e. I mean, is someone working on the family history in its entirety (as it seems Rose did) or are researchers working in much smaller areas based on line, time frame or geographical area? - When researchers exchange information, even whole databases, is another's work considered to be valid? I mean, is it common practice to accept information and add it to your own compilation without 1) the source from which you received it and 2) the primary source where the information itself can be found? I would think that at least a sample of the information should be personally confirmed. - Has Rose's work been entered into an electronic format in its entirety? If so, where is it available? (It's absolutely amazing to me that such a vast body of work was put together without the benefit of the technology available today, or even what was available 10 years ago. I can imagine it wasn't easy to keep track of all that information by hand and then type it up into 300+ pages.) - Does everyone who is doing Taulbee research generally agree that if one meets someone with the name Taulbee, or one of the variations on its spelling, that we are definitely related in some way? I believe this because the name is so uncommon. That's probably enough questions for now... hope they aren't too much. I'm sure I'll have more soon. If anyone wants to ask me any questions please feel free, I'll do my best to help out. Thanks. April M Taulbee wrote: Does everyone who is doing Taulbee research generally agree that if one meets someone with the name Taulbee, or one of the variations on its spelling, that we are definitely related in some way? I believe this because the name is so uncommon. Yes, we pretty much agree that if the name is spelled Taulbee, we all descend from William Hitchcock Taulbee who is given credit for putting the U in the name. The same is true for TOLBY, TALBY, TAULBE, TALBEE and other variants. Not only are these all the same family, they are sometimes the same person, depending upon whom the recorder of the information was. For that reason you must check for all possible variants of the name when looking for information on a particular individual, especially prior to 1900. It will not be certain that the Rhode Island Talby - Talbee line is part of the MD Talbee-Taulbee line until and unless someone can prove that the Edward Talbee who died in Baltimore about 1709 was also an Edward Talbee who was born in Rhode Island. That has yet to be established. There is not yet enough circumstantial evidence to justify that conclusion, although there is enough to agree it is possible, if not yet probable. For some variants, TOLBY, for example (In Andrew's line), the change was deliberate as a result of the shooting of U. S. Representative William Preston Taulbee. Two of Andrew's grandsons changed the spelling following the incident. In other cases, as people learned how to write, they adopted one of the variants. I have been told that the pronunciation of the name is TOLBY regardless of how the spelling is, at least in Kentucky. Where you are in NY, the name probably seems unusual. In Wolfe and Breathitt Counties, KY, it is quite common. When you look at several generations of a dozen kids or more, it has to be common somewhere. When you do a search of the White Pages for TAULBEE on Switchboard.com, the number of hits is staggering. Thanks for posting and drop in often. Robert L. I have always seen Samuel Taulbee, born (c) 1774-5 in Orange County, NC as being the son of William Hitchcock Taulbee and Margaret Canady. A reading of Rose Taulbee's information on page 16 of her book is sufficient to cast doubt about who the mother of Samuel, Elizabeth, and Andrew was. Rose quotes a John Dial Taulbee letter that William Hitchcock Taulbee married Margaret Canady after the war. The war ended in 1783, and all three were born prior to that date. 1. Does anyone know about, have a copy of, or remember the letter Rose refers to? 2. Andrew Canady, the probable (according to Rose) father of Margaret, had his mill in Wilkes County, not Orange County. Does this tend to lend any support to Rose's suspicion? 3. A reading of the census data Rose put on page 15 of her book would have both William Hitchcock Taulbee and Margaret Canady born prior to 1855. To me this only indicates that if William married a second time, perhaps after losing a wife in Childbirth, his second wife Margaret was not a much younger woman as was often the case during that period. One of the things to clear up in researching our colonial roots is the question of the mother-in-law of Samuel Talbee, born (c) 1700, probably in MD (son of Edward and Mary), and therefore one of our common great-great grandparents. Several sources list her as Anne Jones, daughter of Richard Jones and Anne Gassaway. Other research indicates this is probably not true. Anne is probably the daughter of William Hitchcock II's step father, William Jones of Calvert County. (William Jones married William Hitchcock II's mother following the death of William Hitchcock I. She is William Hitchcock's step sister but no blood relation) This is not proven but the time line is much more likely than the Gassaway time line. In any event, when I was at the genealogical library, I found some interesting tidbits about this time: Settlers of Early Maryland 1679 - 1700. Jones, William: (probably the father of Anne Jones, wife of William Hitchcock and mother-in-law of Samuel Talbee, father of William Hitchcock Taulbee). I have a problem with my 5th great grandparents; Adam BIRCHFIELD and Nancy V. (Tolby) TAULBEE (Nancy d/o William Hitchcock Taulbee and Margaret Canady) Adam, by all known records (at least to me) was born 1792 and Nancy, born 1784 The 1850 Breathitt County KY Census seems to back the ages up: (this Census was taken 8-5-1850) Birchfield, Adam age 57 (circa 1793 or late 1792) Nancy age 66 (circa 1784) Rose Taulbee’s book states that because Adam was “underage” when he and Nancy married and that a John BIRCHFIELD was his bondsman. Rose also states that Nancy was 9 years older than Adam. My problem is the first 3 children, which includes my 4th great grandmother, Mary Jane BIRCHFIELD, born Jan 16, 1805, and married William Ashford TAULBEE Adam would have been 13 years old when Mary Jane was born! Did Nancy have a previous marriage that would give a lot of us an entirely different grandfather???????? If anyone on the list is descended from Thomas Taulbee/Tolby and his wife Sarah Ann Jones, I would sure like to hear from you. I have info on two of their children. My descent line to the present. Hope to hear from someone. I have a picture of Thomas Tolby b. April 19, 1800! Also his daughter, Mary Margaret Tolby Henderson. For the benefit of our list cousins, we have learned from a new cousin that Adam Birchfield was the son of John Birchfield and Rebecca (-?-)and grandson of Thomas Birchfield and Mary (-?-). These will all be direct ancestors to those in William Ashford Taulbee or Nancy Taulbee's lines. In searching for records outside of Rose Taulbee's book, I found this marriage, which agrees with Rose's info: Adam BURCHFIELD m Nancy TOLBEY on 28 Aug 1808 in Wilkes County, N.C. I have not yet been able to find the marriage of John and Rebecca or Thomas and Mary, but I did find that the spelling BURCHFIELD was much more common than BIRCHFIELD in the early marriage records. So far it looks like we should be looking in Virginia for 18th century Birchfield/Burchfield marriages. -- Robert L. It is also very slow so you need to use it during non peak hours. The following hits I obtained in checking it out will add to Rose Taulbee's data on page 103 of her book. George ------ Surprise, Arizona ----------------------------------------------------------------- From - Wed Aug 27 06:16:52 1997 From: Annacarole@aol.com Subject: An Ideal On checking with Louise's problem of the ages of Adam Birchfield and Nancy Taulbee. They are 12/13 years apart in all the census, even Mary Jane's in 1880. Here is a theory. My grandmother always said, the her mother Margaret Taulbee was 1/4 Indian. You could see it in my grandmother and from the picture of Granny Margaret you can see it there. I couldn't find any Indian in our history, so one day I asked Raymond Bryant what he knew. He said that one of our greats had a child by an Indian. (A chief no doubt) Anyway the Indians wanted to keep the child, but the grandfather stole the child away. Do you suppose that Mary Jane was this child and not the child of Adam Birchfields, since he was so very young? Granny Margaret would have been the grandaughter of Mary Birchfield Taulbee. Would that make her a 1/4 Indian? Carole --------------------------------------------------------------------------- From - Wed Aug 27 17:13:03 1997 From: HGask10543@aol.com Subject: Re: An Ideal Your idea is following along with something my husband suggested, (and believe me cousins, he tries his best to stay out of my genealogy). His suggestion is that the first three children of Adam and Nancy's were not their biological children, that Adam brought them into the marriage with him and that they were either younger brothers or sisters or maybe even orphans in some way. Maybe Adam was an orphan (and/or an indian) also. I know that tracing Indian heritage is difficult to say the least (I have been there, done that), if not next to impossible. In any case, I think that we all agree that Adam Birchfield probably did not father a child at age 13 with Nancy Taulbee, and that there is an answer out there to this puzzle. Possibly there is a will out there somewhere that has the answer???
