Isaac D. Taulbee 1783

Isaac D. Taulbee, son of William Hitchcock Taulbee and Margaret Canady, was born about 1783 in Wilkes County, North Carolina and died April 17, 1838 in Fayette County, Illinois. He married Elizabeth (-?-) [Rose Taulbee speculated Elizabeth's maiden name may have been Bankson] about 1803/3 while in transit from North Carolina to Kentucky. Elizabeth died August 10, 1838 in Fayette County, Illinois.

The following six paragraphs are taken from Rose Taulbee's family history, page 136:

The first church to be established in Letcher County was the ndian Bottom Church, established in 1810; Letcher Co,. at that time was CLAY CO. In the fall of 1810 a little band of Regular Baptists, numbering about tweny, [sic!] met at the home of Isaac Whitaker, near the home of Ance CORNETT, about two miles up the Kentucky River from what is now Blackie, KY., near a bottom known as Indian Bottom, so named because Indians had camped there and many artifacts were found, thus the name.

Some of the members organized into this church were James Webb and Benjamin Webb his son, who lived on Rockhouse Creek; Benjamin Adams, another son of John Adams; Stephen Caudill and his wife Sarah, who lived at the mouth of Sandlick Creek; Rachel Adams, wife of Benj. Adams; Mathias Kelly and wife Amey, who lived on Cumberoland River; James Caudill and Mary his wife; Benj. Caudill, son of Stephen Caudill; Spencer Adams, another son of John Adams; Isaac Whitaker who lived near the mouth of Rockhouse Creek; Archelous Craft, who lived on Craft's Colly; and John Bunyard. Electious Thompson was chosen pastor and Isaac Whitaker, clerk of this church. We really have very little information on Isaac D. Taulbee. The following pages are what we have gleaned from census records and books giving the county histories where he lived. We have contacted descendants, but they know nothing of the original family, Isaac, his wife and their children.

ISAAC D. TAULBEE, son of Wm. Hitchcock Taulbee, b ca 1783. He was over 50 years of age on the 1835 STATE census of Fayette co., Il. and died two years later, so was at least 53-4 years old. He left wilkes co., N. Car. with his brother Samuel, Isaac being possibly 16 and Samuel about 26; Samuel being married with two sons at 1800 census time. Dont [sic!] know when Isaac married, but it was at least by 1803. Wife's name was elizabeth, las name could be Bankson. They names a son Elijah Bankson and after Isaac's death, Elizabeth had Elijah and Peyton Bankson, handle the sale etc. There was no will in Fayette Co., Il., to probate clerk said. It would seem logical that she would turn to her family for help, but we could be very wrong. Isaac had enough stock to require a brand, the markings were registered 12-17-1826 in Fayette Co., Il.

Isaac and Samuel came from No. Car., thru a part of Tenn, because one of Samuel's sons was born Tenn. 1802. They settled near the mouth of Rockhouse Creek as mentioned in the history of the Indian Bottom Church, in what was then FLOYD co., but which became CLAY Co., 1806. In 1821 it became Perry Co., then in 1842 it became LETCHER Co., and Isaac and Samuel were listed as colonial Families of CLAY CO., Ky. Isaac left Clay Co., ca 1819 and went up to what is now Breathitt Co., "up on Frozen" as we call it today. Samuel had left Clay Co., before Isaac did. They were probably motivated by the act that their parents and siblings had settled on Frozen Creek around 1817. Isaac remained there thru tax time 1825 and then with his family, migrated to Fayette Co., Il. Samuel left Ky. about 1826-7 going to Indiana, Hendricks So., taking at least 7 of 7 of his 10 sons with him. All of Isaac's family came to Il. except one girl listed on 1810 census, who either died or married in KY. and we know nothing of her. Isaac's wife, Elizabeth died 1838 and to date we have not found their burial site. (1982)

Isaac was in the War of 1812 for at least a monty, found no other info. He and his son, James Perry wer in the Black Hawk War 1832-33. It is said Isaac came home riding Black Hawk's mare, the record only says that he lost his horse at Mud Flats, so who knows; maybe he did ride the above mentioned mare home. [Rose Taulbee, page 136]

James Perry Taulbee, son of Isaac Taulbee and Elizabeth (-?-) was born in 1804 in Floyd County, Kentucky and died May 16, 1842 in Fayette County, Illinois. He married Sidney Harris, daughter of David Harris and Fannie (-?-). Sidney was born in 1818 in Tennessee. Following James death, Sidney married John Jackson on July 1, 1843. John was born in 1818 and died September 16, 1897.

1. Nathaniel Greenlee Taulbee was born January 8, 1836 in Fayette County, Illinois and died March 25, 1864 in Fayette County and is buried in Mathias Cemetery. He married Melinda Mathias, daughter of Peter Mathias and Elizabeth (-?-) on December 17, 1857 in Fayette County. Melinda was born in 1838 in Ohio. Following the death of Nathaniel, Melinda married Francis M. Harris on August 10, 1865 in Fayette County. Francis was born in February, 1837 in Illinois. He died October 31, 1909 and is buried in Mathias Cemetery.

Sidney Elizabeth Taulbee was born in 1859 in Fayette County, Illinois. She married twice: (1) James W. Boaz, son of Edmond Boaz, Jr. and Elizabeth Pierce, on July 13, 1878 in Fayette County. James was born in 1852 in Ramsey Township, Fayette County, Illinois; (2) John Nussman.

James Albert Petty was born September 23, 1859. Rose Taulbee wrote that he was a blacksmith at Cowden, Shelby County, Illinois and was living with Uriah Steele in 1880.

Mary Juliet Petty was born December 28, 1861.

2. Harvey Doyle Petty was born in 1831 in Fayette County, Illinois and died September 28, 1879 in Bowling Green Township, Fayette County. He married twice: (1) Nancy Cora Huffman. Nancy was born in 1833; (2) Sarah Ellen Sickles. Sarah was born in 1854 in Illinois.

Mary C. Petty was born in 1859 in Shelby County, Illinois. She married twice: (1) John P. Barrows, son of James Barrows and Elizabeth Severe, on March 27, 1879 at Cowden in Shelby County. This was John's second marriage. John was born in 1846 in Seneca County, Ohio; (2) Jacob Christopher Dush, son of Joseph Dush and Cathern Keooen. Jacob was born in 1843.

Eliza Jane Petty was born in 1861 in Shelby County, Illinois and died by 1900. She married James A. Banning on October 17, 1876 in Fayette County, Illinois. James was born in September, 1844. He was living in the household of Racile McElroy in 1900.

Easter Banning was born in 1883. She was living with a Steinhauer family in 1900.

Joseph D. Petty was born in 1868 in Shelby County, Illinois. He married Emma Molino, daughter of John Molino and Ellen Atkins, on November 16, 1892 in Christian County, Illinois. Emma was born in June, 1867.

Millie divorced Richard Holman in 1873 in Jacksonville, Illinois and then married Aaron Brown on November 28, 1874 in Fayette County, Illinois. Aaron was born in 1850. According to Rose Taulbee, his parents were born in Ohio, but she did not give their names in her book.

Henderson was born on November 11, 1852 in Fayette County, Illinois; (2) Thomas Nussman, son of John Nussman and Elizabeth Carriker, on June 18, 1878 in Montgomery County, Illinois. Thomas was born in march, 1848 in Illinois. His parents were born in Pennsylvania.

* This was Henderson's second marriage. He was earlier married to Nancy J. Davis on april 17, 1873.

Reuben was born in 1815 in North Carolina and died February 7, 1856 in Montgomery County, Illinois.

Thompson, daughter of Susan Thompson (born January 1812, Maryland) on October 26, 1862 in Mongomery County. Mary was born January 28, 1844 in Licking County, Ohio and died September 27, 1932 in Montgomery County, Illinois. She is also buried in Elmwood Cemetery.

Leighton W. Cline was born August 2, 1866 in Illinois and died April 19, 1945 in Montgomery County, Illinois. He was buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Litchfield, Illinois, but the remains were later moved to Springfield, Illinois. He married Delinda Cooper, daughter of Henry Cooper and Mary Murphy of Nilwood, Macoupin County, Illinois. Delinda was born May 12, 1866 and died March 25, 1948 in Montgomery County, Illinois. She was also buried in Elmwood Cemetery and her remains were later moved to Springfield, Illinois by her daughter, Gladys.

Cooper, son of Henry Cooper and Mary Murphy on October 29, 1890 in Litchfield, Montogmery County, Illinois. Frank was born in 1863 and died after 1922. I do not know if they had any children.

Alexander Cullen Cline was born February 13, 1873 and died September 18, 1943 in Montgomery County, Illinois. He is buried in Elmwood Cemetery. He married Jennie Finnegan. Jennie died april 3, 1943 in Montogmery County. She is also buried in Elmwood Cemetery.

James Marion Cline was born in 1895. He married (Mrs.) Marjorie Linn in Montgomery County, Illinois on July 23, 1926.

James Stanley Cline was born September 26, 1879 in Illinois and died January 29, 1921 in Montgomery County, Illinois. He is buried in Elmwood Cemetery. He married Lucille Ellis. Lucille died September 13, 1922. I do not know if there were any children.

Melissa Jane Cline was born in 1839 in Fayette County, Illinois. She married Lewis Hayden on April 26, 1857 in Montgomery County, Illinois. I do not know if there were any children.

2. Alexander Perry Cline was born September 18, 1818 and died June 18, 1848 in Contgomery. According to Rose Taulbee, he is buried in a cemetery one and a half miles South East on Walshville. He married Mary Ann Smith, daughter of Malacki Smith on January 17, 1839 in Montgomery County, Illinois. Mary Ann was born in 1825 and died in 1860/61 in Madison County, Illinois. Mary married two other times: (2) Daniel McCall Taulbee, son of Isaac D. Taulbee. Daniel died in 1853; (3) Thomas Deck of Madison County, Illinois on January 2, 1859 in Montgomery County, Illinois. Thomas was born in 1821 in Virginia. Thomas had been married twice before: (1) unknown; (2) Mary S. Harnsberber on December 12, 1850, in Madison County, Illinois.

Smith, daughter of Francis Smith and Evaline Swisher. Rosa was born in 1871; (2) Elizabeth Hartbauer. Elizabeth was born January 23, 1878 and died April 19, 1949.

Hail on February 10, 1867 in Montgomery County, Illinois. Rebecca was born November 1, 1836 in Montgomery County and died March 3, 1872 in Sorento, Illinois. She is buried in Kirkland Cemetery, near Walshville, Illinois. Her first husband was killed in the Civil War; (3) Rebecca Ann Van Hoosier on December 19, 1872 in Montgomery County, Illinois. Rebecca was born June 25, 1849 in Lebanon, Illinois and died January 11, 1918 in La Cygne, Kansas.

His second was Mildren/d (?). According to Rose Taulbee, he was a writer, lecturer, and headed the Institute of Strategy in Chicago (CIA).

I know of only 1 child, by the first marriage, Jolene Oaks, birth date unknown.

Anna Freda Pauline Oaks was born December 30, 1901, in Merwin, Bates County, Missouri. She married Robert Calley on November 1, 1929.

Only child I am aware of is Anna Calley who was a New York City opera singer. I do not know her married or stage name, if any.

A son was born and died on March 28, 1872, the same day Rebecca died.

Reuben Alfred Cline was born October 12, 1879 in Montgomery County, Illinois, and died February 19, 1948 in La Cygne Kansas. He is buried at East Mount Zion Cemetery, La Cygne. He married Bertha Alice Rogers, daughter of John J. Rogers and Mary E. Booth on March 14, 1904 in La Cygne, Kansas. Bertha was born September 14, 1880 at Murray, Clark County, Iowa, and died January 4, 1962 at Garnett, Anderson County, Kansas. She is buried at East Mt. Zion Cemetery, La Cygne. Reuben was a farmer and the county assessor.

Miller on September 23, 1863 in Wasioga, Dodge County, Minnesota. Anne was born October 15, 1844 in Noblesville, Indiana and died January 31, 1922 in Portland, Oregon. Cullen was a Methodist Minister and writer of some note. During the War of the Northern Agression, he served in the Yankee Army.

Ann Cline was born in 1864 and died in 1933. She married (?) Farley, a physician. I do not know if they had any children. Rose Taulbee reported only that when she published her book, (c) 1981 there were no living children.

He married (Mrs) Matilda Pierce Orr Boaz. Rose Taulbee believed her to be the daughter of John Pierce. Matilda was born in October, 1841 in Illinois and died after 1919 in Fayette County. She is also buried in Independence Cemetery.

Charles Spencer Taulbee was born November 26, 1868 in Montgomery County, Illinois. He married twice. The name of his first wife is unknown. His second wife was Genieve Babcock Smith.

This history is confusing. Charles names son by 1st marrige, Charles Daniel. 1st wife ran away and married again. She took 1st Charles Daniel with her and changed his name. Father (Charles Spencer Taulbee) never saw him again, so as you (will) see, named a son by 2nd marrige, the same as the first. Don't know why he was so SET on that name. These two brothers married and have children and have found each other, both live in the state of Washington, I think, however Charles No. 1 lived most of his life in Portland, Oregon under name of Charles David Wood.

John William Taulbee was born December 27, 1870 in Litchfield, Illinois and died November 11, 1936 in Springfield, Illinois. He is buried at Camp Butler National Cemetery, a veteran of the Spanish American War who did not leave the States. He married Blanche Elizabeth Whaley, daughter of James M. Whaley and Susan Rebecca Edwards on August 20, 1910 at the Saint Louis Missouri Courthouse. Blanche was born January 11, 1876 in Solsberry, Green County, Indiana. She died in August, 1949 in Springfield, Illinois.

Children of John and Blanche:

Marian Irene Taulbee was born June 15, 1911. She married William Butts. She died in a shelter care home in Alton, Illinois.

Elijah Bankson Taulbee was born September 17, 1873 in Montgomery County, Illinois and died October 14, 1907 in Montgomery County and is buried in Crabtree Cemetery. He married Delialiah Stewart, daughter of Robert Stewart and Ellen Washburn. Deliliah Stewart was born September 26, 1876 and died October 22, 1970. She is also buried in Crabtree Cemetery.

Alva M. Taulbee was born June 9, 1896 in Montgomery County, Illinois and died October 22, 1971 in Montgomery, County, Illinois. She married Earl C. (Chester) Coatney on January 29, 1913 in Saint Louis, Missouri. Earl died March 5, 1865 in Montgomery, County, Illinois.

Children of Alva and Earl:

June Juanita Coatney was born June 8, 1914. She married William G. Sielschott.

Karl Edwin Coatney was born April 2, 1923 and died October 18, 1972. The name of his wife is unknown to me. Email me if the names of his children are important.

Fred Taulbee was born April 22, 1906. He did not marry. He lived in Litchfield, Illinois in 1974.

Esther Lou Taulbee possibly married a

Glen Bratcher of Rochester, Illinois. (Rose Taulbee, pge 177).

Nellie Taulbee was born April 29, 1901 and died December 8, 1918. She did not marry.

Molly Taulbee was born in 1877 in Nokomis, Illinois. She married Joseph Richardson, warden at Missouri State Women's Prison, Saint Louis Missouri.

Seville I Taulbee was born March 5, 1882 but died in infancy.

James W. Taulbee was born on December 9, 1885 and died by 1915.

Daniel Otha Taulbee was born January 17, 1887 and died April 24, 1956 in Litchfield, Illinois. He is buried in Crabtree Cemetery. He married Mabel Coldie Williams, daughter of Alfred Williams and Mable Lee Persons, on September 13, 1923. Mabel was born march 25, 1894 and died June 23, 1968 in Litchfield, Illinois. She is buried in Crabtree Cemetery.

The only child I know of Is Wayne Daniel Taulbee, born September 29, 1924 and was accidently shot to death by a playmate on July 27, 1936.

Ellen E. Taulbee was born December, 1886 and died in infancy.

Sara Jane Taulbee was born December 2, 1890. She married Evald Sanders.

Marie F. Taulbee was born July 25, 1889 and died in infancy.

Daisy A. Taulbee was born June 13, 1895. She married an Eckhardt, or a Floquet, or possibly both. (pg 175)

3. Reuben Moses Taulbee was born June 26, 1848. I have no further information.

4. William Alexander Taulbee was born April 23, 1850 in Montgomery County Illinois and died January 30, 1908 in Fayette County, Illinois. He is buried in Independence Cemetery. He married (Mrs) Sarah Ann Hollinghead Boaz, daughter of John Hollinghead* and Sarah Swearingen, on October 26, 1874 in Fayette County, Illinois. Sarah was born December 25, 1848 and died October 26, 1924 in Fayette County, Illinois. William and Sarah were members of the Union Christian Church. She is buried in Independence Cemetery. Sarah was previouly married to Daniel Boaz.

* John Hollinghead was born about 1815 in Jennings County, Ohio, and died about 1865 in Fayette County, Illinois.

Eleanor Eunice Taulee was born in March, 1876 in Fayette County, Illinois. She married Charles H. England, son of William England and Elizabeth Harris, on July 16, 1893 in Fayette County, Illinois. Charles was born in January, 1872.

William F. England was born in March, 1894.

Clyde B. England was born in September, 1897.

There was one more child who died prior to 1900.

Ida Boaz was born in 1868 and married William Miller on March 25, 1885 in Fayette County. William was born in 1858.

5. Hiram Roundtree Taulbee was born February 28, 1852 in Montgomery, County, Illinois and died May 23, 1901. He is buried in Hart Cemetery, Montgomery County, Illinois. He married Martha E. I. Corlew, daughter of Ranson P. Corlew and Ann (?) on July 9, 1874 in Montgomery County, Illinois. Martha was born in 1858.

Sarah Melinda Taulbee was born December 21, 1853 in Montgomery County, Illinois. She married Theodore Finley, son of Simpson Finley and Nancy (?) on March 8, 1970, in Montgomery County. Theodore was born in January, 1847 in Illinois. Theodore married a second time to

(Mrs) Nancy. M. Cline Duncan, daughter of William H. Cline, Sr. Nancy was previously married to Lewis Duncan.

Eliza Finley was born in 1873.

8. Mary Ann Taulbee was born November 23, 1857. She married James M. Champe, son of Pleasant Champe and Elizabeth (?) (Both James' parents were born in Tennessee.)

Daniel McCall Taulbee, son of Issac D. Taulbee and Elizabeth (?) was born in 1828 in Fayette County, Illinois and died September 27, 1853 in Montgomery County, Illinois. He married Mary Ann Smith Cline, daughter of Malacki Smith on July 7, 1849. Mary Ann was born in 1825 and died in 1860 or 1861 in Madison County, Illinos. Previously Mary Ann was married to Alexander Cline, son of William Cline and Jane Bryer.

Daniel Wilbur Taulbee, was born August 22, 1851 in Montgomery County, Illinois and died January 13, 1927 in Montfomery County. He married twice: (1) Josephine Watts, daughter of Martin Watts and Margaret (?) on January 16, 1873 in Madison County; (2) Jennie Eckers on January 16, 1907 in Montgomery County. Jennie Was born December 12, 1854 in Marble Hill, Missouri and died December 24, 1932 in Montgomery County. Daniel was a merchant.

Margaret W. Taulbee was born in 1873 in New Douglass, Madison County, Illinois. She married Charles Augustus Ritchie, son of John W. Ritchie (born August 14, 1834) and Rachel Cress (born in 1836), on October 6, 1891 in Litchfield, Montgomery County, Illinois. Charles was born January 20, 1868 and died January 28, 1936 in Montgomery County, Illinois. He is buried in Elmwood Cemetery.

Children of Margaret and Charles:

A female child who may have died in infancy.

John W. Ritchie, Jr.was born after 1900 and married Maud (?).

A Ritchie family came from Pennsylvania and settled in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. John Ritchie a son, married Seeley Blackwelder in Cabarrus County. John and Seeley died the same year, 1854, and are buried near the homeplace. John W., son of John and Seeley came to Montgomery County, Illinois. Their son is Charles Augustus.]

Walter H. Taulbee was born November 27, 1880 in New Douglass, Madison County, Illinois and died April 17, 1937. in Montgomery, County. He married twice: (1) Emma J. Gabby, daughter of John Gabby and Emma Chance; (2) Hattie Self, daughter of Jasper Self and Mary A. Murphy. Hattie died November 24, 1937.

Frances Elizabeth Taulbee was born June 15, 1853 in Montgomery County. She married Thomas Knowlson on February 29, 1872 in Madison County.

Isaac D. Taulbee, Jr., son of Isaac D. Taulbee and Elizabeth (?), was born in 1829 or 1830 in Fayette County, Illinois and died March 1, 1861 in Fayette County. He married Cynthia Jane Sapp, daughter of Eli Sapp (born 1806 in Ohio), on June 13, 1858 in Fayette County, Illinois. Cynthia was born in 1842. Following Isaac's death, Cynthia married Thomas Mathewson on October 11, 1866 in Fayette County, Illinois. Thomas was born in 1832 in Ohio and died January 9, 1874.

Dial and Agness Taylor. [Phillip was born in Ohio and may have been married as many as 5 times. Agness was born in Tennessee (Rose Taulbee, pg 180).] William was born October 20, 1852 in Illinois and died January 27, 1888. He is buried in Dial Graveyard, Fayette County, Illinois; (2) George Weygant, son of Henry Weygant and Susannah Kenton (both born in Pennsylvania), on July 7 1891. George was born in April, 1833 in Ohio and died Janyuary 13, 1905 in Avena, Illinois. He is buried in Old Leberty Cemetery, Brownstown, Illinois. George was a veteran of the Civil War.

Thomas Lawrence Dial was born in 1878. He married Rose M. Smith on June 18, 1897 in Fayette County, Illinois. Rose was born in 1879.

William Elliott Dial was born in January, 1881. He married Bertha Frances McConkey on December 10, 1901 in Fayette County, Illinois.
