John C. Taulbee

John C. Taulbee, son of Samuel Taulbee and Rebecca Birchfield, was born in 1804 in Floyd County, Kentucky. He married Nancy E. Hill on May 3, 1827 in Perry County, Kentucky. Nancy was born in (c) 1805 in North Carolina and was one of my 4th great grandmothers. Nancy's daughter, Alice Temperance Hill, is believed to have been born out of wedlock prior to Nancy's marriage to John and is my 3rd great grandmother.

The following, taken from Rose Taulbee's Taulbee Family History, illustrates the problems one has when all you have to go on is the census:

This family is something of a puzzle. We can't pinpoint nancy'c age, having to rely on census records and they did not help. 1850 she was 44, 1860 she was 50, 1870 she was 67 and 1880 she was 73 which is tho only one that agrees with 1850. 1850 they had Eliza Patrick with them, she was there thru 1870 and listed as a servant. 1860 Easter Catherine appears and 1870 Lorrabelle is added and 1880 Cordelia Hughes is there, however she married John C. B. Taulbee, son [of] William Lee [Taulbee ]. Also on 1860 census a Susan age 28 and listed as a weaver, is with this family. On the 1830 census of Perry County, Kentucky., John is listed with 2 females to [age] 5 and 1 to [age] 10. Have found a Rebecca and a Sylvania that must be his. The female to [age] 10 is Temperance Hill. (page 91).

Children of Nancy Hill and (-?-):

Alice Temperance Hill was born in 1824 in North Carolina. Her illigitimate birth caused a scandal which was whispered about for many years. One Taulbee relative I have spoken to said he remembers his mother and grand mother saying there was some dark secret about Tempy Hill. At this time I do not know the actual circumstances of her birth, if she was a product of an extra marital affair, or a product of rape is unclear. Tempy Hill, as she was known, Married Jefferson Davis Taulbee, son of William Ashford Taulbee and Mary Jane Birchfield. about 1844.

Sylvania Taulbee, daughter of John C. Taulbee and Nancy Hill, was born in 1826. She married Daniel Gullett on February 10, 1859 in Morgan County, Kentucky. Daniel was born in 1813. in North Carolina.

2. Martha J. Gullett was born in 1864.

3. Alsa Gullett was born in 1866.

4. Henry W. Gullett was born in 1868.

Rebecca Taulbee, daughter of John C. Taulbee and Nancy Hill, was born about 1830. She married Joseph D. Allen on November 26, 1849 in Morgan County, Kentucky. Joseph was born in 1828.

William Taulbee, son of John C. Taulbee and Nancy Hill was born in 1834 in Morgan County, Kentucky and died July 5, 1904. He married three times: (1) Lourance Banks, daughter of David Banks and Celia (-?-). Lourance was born in 1843 and died December 28, 1878; (2) Jane Banks, daughter of John L. Banks and Hannah Wadkins, and a cousin of Lourance. Jane was born in 1849; (3) Elizabeth Lykins, daughter of William Lykins of Morgan County. Elizabeth was born in 1844 and died August 24, 1924.

**William was the third of 5 husbands. Other husbands of Elizabeth Lykins: (1) John Allen, (2) Frank Woods,(4) James Allen,(5) William Birchfield, son of John Birchfield and Polly (-?-). William was born in August of 1844 and died May 23, 1923.

2. John Ray Taulbee was born in September of 1866 and died February 15, 1935. He married Sarah B. Brummett about March 14, 1895. Sarah was born in February, 1880 and died October 10, 1938.

Raleigh Taulbee was born in may, 1897. He married Cora Lee Centers, daughter of Elza Centers and Nancy Caroline (Katherine?) Taulbee, ( Nancy is the daughter of John William Taulbee, son of John C. Taulbee and Nancy Hill).

Silas Taulbee was born in August, 1898. He married Louise Barker on March 19, 1919. Louise was a sister to Nancy Clara Barker.

Nathan Taulbee was born in June, 1900. He married Betty Tolson, daughter of Joseph C. Tolson and Florence Turner. Betty was born in 1901. There is room for serious doubt that Betty Tolson married this particular Nathan Taulbee. For another possible wife of Nathan, see Nathan Taulbee, below.

Pearlie Taulbee.

Earl Taulbee married Edna Taulbee. According to Rose Taulbee, Edna is the daughter of William Taulbee of Lee City. I do not know which William Taulbee she is refering to.

Hager Taulbee married Dora Centers, daughter of Elza Centers and Nancy Caroline (Katherine?) Taulbee. Dora was born July 4, 1903.

Howard Taulbee died at age 10.

6. Samuel E. Taulbee was born April 8, 1876. He married Nancy Hall. Nancy was born in 1879.

Harvey Taulbee was born in 1899 and died March 18, 1980 in Ohio. He married twice: (1) Betty Stephens, daughter of A. D. Stephens and Mary Back. Betty was born in 1898; (2) Hattie Stamper, daughter of Millard Filmore Stamper and Eda Townsend. Hattie was born in 1893.

1. Raleigh Logan Taulbee was born in May of 1882. He was a veteran of the Spanish American War and is buried in Field Branch Cemetery, Breathitt County. He married Lulie Gullett, daughter of T. A. Gullett and Lou Ratliff. Lulie was born in 1890.

2. William Braxton Taulbee, a.k.a. Stovewood Bill, was born May 22, 1888 and died December 9, 1966. He married Nancy Clara Barker on June of 1910 at Hazel Green, Kentucky. Nancy was a sister of Louise Barker.

Pauline Beatrice Taulbee was born June 26, 1911.

William Lenox Taulbee was born July 13, 1912 and died July 13, 1989. He married Mrs (-?-) Taulbee.

There are no known children from either marriage.

Cynthia Taulbee, daughter of John C. Taulbee and Nancy Hill, was born in May of 1839. She married 3 times: (1) (-?-) Gullett; (2) T. J. Penny on March 23, 1866 in Magoffin County, Kentucky and later divorced; (3) John Flinchem on September 11, 1883.

Lula F. Taulbee was born about 1889. She married S. T. Campbell at the home of Thomas and Mary Ann. The marriage was performed at Thomas and Mary Ann's home in Breathitt County, Kentucky.

2. Avery J. Gullett was born March 31, 1861.

3. Gehazie D. Gullett was born in March, 1862 and died August 10, 1942 in Breathitt County, Kentucky. She married William Lee Taulbee, son of Jefferson Davis Taulbee and Alice Temperance Hill, on April 25, 1878. William was born in January, 1845, in Breathitt County and died January 1, 1924 in Breathitt County. William was a Baptist Minister. Gehazie was William's second wife, Fanny Dunn being his first.

Refering to the census data above, Cyntha is listed as head of household on the 1860 Magoffin Census and is with her parents in 1870. Cannot tell if the the two children Lorrabell (6) and Catherine (12) are hers. If they are Cyntha's the names do not agree with the information in Rose's book.

James Taulbee, son of John C. Taulbee and Nancy Hill, was born in 1846 in Morgan County, Kentucky. He married Louisa J. Elam on August 3, 1871, in Morgan County. Louisa was born in 1850 in Kentucky.

William K. Taulbee was born in 1871.

John T. Taulbee was born in 1872.

Nancy E. Taulbee was born May 11, 1875.

Eliza Taulbee was born in 1879 in Morgan County, Kentucky.

John William Taulbee, son of James C. Taulbee and Nancy Hill, was born in 1842 in Morgan County, Kentucky and died November 29, 1908. He is buried in Negro Branch Cemetery, Breathitt County. He married Eliza King, daughter of George King and Polly Vires. Eliza was born in 1844/47 and died in August of 1912 in Breathitt County.

1. James Cornelious Taulbee was born Oct 15, 1862 and died September 4, 1944. He married Margaret Malissa Taulbee, daughter of James Perry Taulbee and Elizabeth Dunn on October 22, 1881. Margaret was born December 11, 1866 and died June 25, 1958. They are buried in Taulbee Cemetery, Belknap, Kentucky.

2. William Henry (Howard ?) Taulbee was born January, 1868. (There is some question to if the middle name is Henry, Howard, or perhaps both). He married Amanda Taulbee, daughter of William Lee Taulbee and Fanny J. Dunn. Amanda was born in May of 1871.

3. Greenberry Taulbee was born December 3, 1871 and died November 14, 1937. He married three times: (1) Nancy Ann Mullins, daughter of J. K. Mullins and Bessie Lykins, on April 2, 1891. (J. K. Mullins was the son of Genry Mullins). They were divorced in 1896. Nancy was born in 1871 and died in February, 1950 at Lone Lake, Wisconsin; (2) Caroline Shockey, daughter of Alex Shockey and Julia Ann McQuinn, on December 2, 1896. Caroline was born in 1867 and died September 1, 1923; (3) Rinda Center, daughter of James Rascom and Sarah Burton Center, on March 10, 1925. Rinda was born November 25, 1894.

James Thomas Taulbee was born June 12, 1893 in Bays, Kentucky and died March 20, 1978 in Logan Ohio. He is buried in Fairview Cemetery. He married Paulina Burcham, daughter of J. W. Burcham and Milly Little, on March 12, 1913. Paulina was born April 5, 1894, in Wolfe County.

Eugene Mitchell Taulbee was born in 1914 and married Sarah Mildred Malone.

5. John Miles Taulbee was born Feb 29. 1875 and died August 5, 1957 (or possibly 1954). He married twice: (1) Amanda Marilyn Centers, daughter of Frank Centers and Martha McCarthy, in 1893 and divorced in 1911 or 1912. Amanda was born January 9, 1875 and died February 26, 1973 and is buried in Wheelersburg, Ohio; (2) Mary Elizabeth Rudd on Jauary 13, 1913. Mary was born March 21, 1882 and died December 1, 1937. Mary was married twice before.

Following the divorce from John, Amanda married Samuel Litteral, and had a child, Samuel Kelly Litteral. She then divorced Samuel and did not remarry. Samuel on the other hand married Cedele Florence King and was also married to Nora Taulbee, daughter of Jefferson Davis Taulbee, Jr. and Ella Cockerill with whom he had 4 children.

Goldie Taulbee married Julius Blackman.

Effie Taulbee was born in 1914 and married James Roberts on October 11, 1930 in Breathitt County, Kentucky. She was also married to Marvin McCulley.

Catherine Taulbee married Martin Seigle.

Mable Taulbee married Ray Smith.

Casey Taulbee married Carrie (-?-)

Mary Elizabeth Rudd was also married to (1) William Stamper. Children were Bertha Stamper, Claude Stamper; Charles Stamper, Jack Stamper; (2) Lum Belamy. I know of only one child, Savannah Belamy.

6. Nancy Caroline (Katherine?) Taulbee was born February 22, 1979 and died October 1, 1950 in South Lebanon, Ohio. She is buried in Center-Rudd Cemetery, Belnap, Kentucky. She married Elza Centers, son of Frank Centers and Martha McCarthy, on January 7, at Taulbee, Kentucky. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. William Lee Taulbee. Elza was born May 3, 1878 and died April 29, 1966 at Lee City, Kentucky.

Children of Nancy and Elza:

Cora Lee Centers married Raleigh Taulbee, Son of John Ray Taulbee and Sarah B. Brummett. Cora was born in May of 1897.

Dora Centers was born July 4, 1903. She married Hager Taulbee, son of John Ray Taulbee and Sarah B. Brummett.

Taylor Centers was born July 1, 1901 and died June 10, 1928 and is buried in Holbrook Cemetery, Belnap, Kentucky

Mattie Beatrice Centers was born March 2/March 9, 1915 in Wolfe County, Kentucky. She married twice: (1)

Vernie Clark Haddix on September 18, 1930. Vernie was born April 19, 1912 and died June 4, 1963. He is buried in Deerfield Cemetery, South Lebanon, Ohio; (2) James Stacy on September 16, 1963. James was born May 23, 1900.

Liza Ann Centers was born August 2, 1908. She married

James Kelly Centers was born June 3, 1912. He married

Mabel Lillian Turner on May 14, 1933. Lillian was born April 9, 1912.

7. George W. Taulbee was born in October of 1881 and died January 27, 1929. He married Emma Hignite Centers on October 11, 1901 in Breathitt County, Kentucky. Emma was born about 1881 and died in 1956.

Rose Taulbee has a statement in her book that she had information that George murdered Burnam Walters but said she had no idea when or where.

Millard Taulbee was born February 22, 1903 and died March 21, 1882. He married Mattie Taulbee, daughter of William Preston Taulbee and Dora Terrill, on April 4, 1925. Mattie was born April 9, 1907 and died May 10, 1977.

Children of George and Emma:

Arizona Taulbee married Colburn Back.

Arlana Taulbee was born in 1909 and died in 1969, in Wolfe County, Kentucky. She is buried in Helechawa, Kentucky. She married Edison Dykes, son of James Dykes and Dora Barnett. Edison was born July 22, 1903 and died August 26, 1981 in Helechawa, Kentucky.

8. Ruth M. Taulbee was born June 5, 1883 and died May 25, 1957. She married twice: (1) Frank Pinson, son of Samuel Pinson and Melissa Lanny. Frank was born in 1881 in West Virginia; (2) John Jacobs. John was born September 23, 1886 and died December 9, 1952.

William Jennings Pinson was born May 12, 1906 and died Feb 15, 1958 in Ohio.

Harold Pinson died at age 2.
