Taulbee List Public Archives November 1997 From - Sat Nov 01 09:51:29 1997 From: moravia@doitnow.com Subject: More Obits Our Cousin Carole has sent another half megabyte of obits that I have loaded to our private page More will follow. Cousin Louise has come up with a way to quickly convert these obits from the format they are in now to one which would eliminate any copyright questions, reduce the amount of RAM they require, and permit them to be moved from our private page to a public page and posted to GenWeb. It requires about a minute per obit an involves little more than careful use of the delete and enter keys. If any of you have a handful of hours to spend working with one of these files, please contact Louise at so that she can explain what she has come up with, and also, no two people unknowingly work on the same file. The finished product must be saved as a text document and sent to me as an attachment in private email (please, no attachments to the list - that causes all kinds of strange things to happen to rootsweb) and I will post it to a public page. If no one has time to help, then I suppose Louise and I will work on it as we find time during the next several weeks. I cannot get to it until the census is finished. I just received a hard census copy from Carole, so it will be easier to catch errors in converting the data from one format to the other. -- Robert L. Subject: Edward Talbee I read about Edward Taulbee (16?? - 1709) over my lunch hour today that he apparently settled on the Gunpowder River, which is now the Baltimore/Harford County line in Maryland (formerly this was all Baltimore County). What makes it truly amazing to me is that I could walk down to the Gunpowder in about 3 minutes from the building I work in here at Aberdeen Proving Ground. There are quite a few Taulbees in the last two files. I broke into a new file each time the household numbers started over. This happened 10 times. I was afraid that because of the way the columns were jumbled together by the conversion to Word Perfect, that if I did not do this, it would be too easy to get households mixed up when converting from two columns to a single column. Anyway, lets hope this provides a few of you some leads. -- Robert L. Unfortunately, the rootsweb list owner utilities which are supposed to notify me of new subscribers only notified me of one. So welcome to the list, Frank, and the same to you other three who will remain strangers until you introduce yourselves to the rest of us. Many of us have posted a short introduction to the Taulbee List and a description of our lines. Others have posted queries, some have made connections, others are still waiting. As the list grows, the chances of connections increase, so be sure to repost now and then for the new members. I am storing an archive of most posts on the Taulbee Pages on the URL below, so you can see what has been posted so far. We also have a page of Taulbee and related family obituaries for the past ten years or so at [closed page, URL deleted] Three of our cousins are working hard to index them and put them in a format we can post to a public page, rather than this private research page. I will replace the existing files with what ever they come up with. If you are willing to help, let Louise Gaskill, at HGask10543@aol.com know. Also thanks to cousins Crystal and Jerry for helping Louise. This is going to be a big job, almost as big as Cousin Carole's when she compiled them. Thank you Carole. About Rose Taulbee's book. It cannot be purchased anywhere as a new book. The Taulbee who sent me a copy in very poor condition told me it was okay to copy it as long as it was not sold. My copy will no longer stand the strain of mailing, and I will not have time to copy it again until probably the summer. Louise has people standing in line to borrow her copy. If there is someone with the time to make several copies, it would help ease the demand. There are about 342 pages, so you can figure the copy costs. If you are able to make several copies, post your email to the list so someone willing to loan their copy can get in touch with you. There is, I have been told by two cousins, a copy in the Cincinnati Public Library, if it has not been "borrowed." That is the only library copy I know of. Eventually I will have most of what is in the book, plus other information on the web page, put that is months, probably years away. Again, welcome to the list and let us hear from you soon. The list may not seem that active, but there is a lot of conversation between new cousins in private email. -- Robert L. JAMES WILLIAMS > Thanks for any help, > PA T WILLIAMS You did it right. Now we will see if we can help. And welcome! Help me out with some conflicting information, cousins. The first problem is with the date of death for Isaac. Rose Taulbee has Isaac's death as 1913 or 15 (pg 320). The Commonwealth of KY has his death as 1913 (See extract of death certificate at end of message, courtesy of cousin Carole). The Death certificate has his birth place as Breathitt County, Rose had it as 1932 Estill County. Rose lists the following children: Mary, Zarilda, Fannie, Amanda J., James Henry, Juda, John C. B., George W., Elizabeth, and Eliza, and has information on their descendants to the early 1900s. There are 7 pages in Rose's book which need to be copied. I can manage to copy 7 pages if you send me a mail address. If it turns out you live near one of your cousins who has this book, maybe you and that cousin can arrange a meeting. BREWER Execution To ALL subscribers who responded to the subject – Thank you! To the many subscribers who responded privately via e-mail - I am posting a digest of info w/o your e-addresses (to protect privacy): Here is what I have learned about the subject: 1. Even though Kentucky's first capital punishment law was enacted in 1792, accurate statistics concerning executions only go back to 1911. In that year the Kentucky State Penitentiary at Eddyville installed the electric chair that has executed a total of 162 men. Of those, 144 were executed for murder, seven for rape, six for criminal assault, and five for armed robbery. 2. If the ‘Leslie County’ victim was a Federal officer, the subject could have been executed somewhere other than within KY. 3. The subject execution was for a federal crime, and his case will be in the national archives in the region that serves KY. 4. Isham BREWER married, Nov. 7, 1886, Elizabeth GREEN b.c1863. They had four kids: Cordia b.c1885, Sam b.c1888, Sarah b.c1895, and Charles b.c1900. 5. Two books on Leslie County had BREWERs but the responder believed them unrelated to the subject; nothing mentioned in the two books of a BREWER being involved in a murder case. NOTE: 1. The subject may be Samuel BREWER or Charles BREWER. If I learn the subject’s exact identity, I'll post it publicly! It may have involved a Federal revenuer & moonshine. 2. To those who responded with an unrelated quiry, please be patient with me. Currently I am swamped. Wittnesses were James Brewer and E. Hollon." I believe that "James Brewer" is James C. Brewer (b.1870), son of Isham and his 2nd wife, Elizabeth "Betsy" Hollon (b. 1839). I also believe that said "E. Hollon" is Elcain Hollon (b. ca.1854), grandson of Charity MAINS (1777-1874) and John HOLLON (1777-1854). *2 NOTE: 1900 US Census: 1910 US Census: Isham Brewer 1/30 Brewer, Eliz. 41 Eliz. 1886 3 wf. I also believe that said "Charles Brewer" and "Charley Brewer" (one and same) is the ONLY son of Isham and Isham’s 3rd wife, Elizabeth "Sarah" (later, to be also known as Widow SIMPKINS). Most likely Charley BREWER, after growing up, was executed (by electrocution) for committing murder in Leslie County, KY. That was enough to raise doubt as to the accuracy of the dates. Today, speaking with a 78 year old cousin, introduced to be by Val, I got the following story. Fanny Dunn was very pregneant with Fannie Taulbee when she fell off her horse. The fall caused Fannie Taulbee to be born almost immediately. Fanny Dunn died very shortly afterwards. And for the corrections. Obtaining corrections is exactly the reason I am posting the information we have as we have it, without being able to document all of it. Hopefully, more Taulbees will see it and let us know where it is in error. Not all of the information I have came from Rose's book. But so much is so similar that I wonder if some of it was not lifted out of it and has circulated through several people and now seems to come from somewhere else. Rose's last name was Taulbee. She was, I was told by a Taulbee who knew her, an old maid school teacher. Again, I cannot not confirm that. She died of cancer knowing her book was unfinished and contained errors, but wanted to get something out before she died and her life's work was lost. Her brother threw out a room full of documentation because he saw no reason to keep it. Two different people have told me that. She only made 300 copies, all presold. They were on cheap paper with a spiral binding. With use, the books do not hold up well. Some have been rebound and will survive a bit longer. Most people I know who have copies have xeroxed copies, not the original. Thus the discussion over should we or should we not offer to copy it. Rose's book is a place for us to start. Without it, we would have very few clues of where to look. My 3rd maternal grandfather was Jefferson Davis Taulbee, Sr. So we start sharing common grandparents from that point. A large number of your list cousins share his father, William Ashford Taulbee. I am sure some of our more serious cousins will be contacting you, since more than one is on aol. For the time being I have placed him with the other photos on the Taulbee Pages. Eventually, I will move him to the proper location when ever I get that line posted. It has been claimed that the line of James Madison is the most accurate of all of Rose's book, that one of James' descendants made very sure of everything before he passed it on to her. For those others who have promissed photos, gentle hint, gentle hint. Thank you Terry. -- Robert L. Jill Pence jmpence@mm.com -------------------------------------------------------------------- William Berry Hitchcock Taulbee, Sr and Jr (moravia@doitnow.com, Mon 22:04) Resent-From: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com To: taulbee-l@rootsweb.com Some circumstantial evidence is accumulating that William Hitchcock Taulbee was William Berry Hitchcock Taulbee (or the middle names could be reversed). The two main clues are the 1907 family history written by Judge Taulbee (Thank you Becky and Dennis) in which he clearly refers to the man we know as William Hitchcock Taulbee as William Berry Taulbee. Rose's book has several other Taulbees with two middle names. Next is the 1930 Perry County Census with William Talby SR, and William Talby Jr., which by the ages, must be William Hitchcock Taulbee and William Berry Taulbee. Not sure this really means anything, except when evaluating works like that of Judge Franklin. It is generally accepted that William Hitchcock Taulbee was born in Maryland and moved to North Carolina. So far I have seen no proof of where he was born. There is no reason that the claim of Judge Franklin that he was born in Georgia could not be true. We do know that he was in North Carolina during the Revolution because of his service in the Orange County Militia. Since we do not know when William's father, Samuel left Maryland, maybe we should keep an open mind as to just where William was born. The DAR Pariot Index also has William Hitchcock Taulbee born in Georgia, but I don't know where their information came from. I think the jury must remain out on this one. -- Robert L. On page 61 of Rose's book, Dorothy Irene Taulbee married John Lemon and had no children. This was a bit exciting since, according to Steve, Dorothy Taulbee and John Lemon had a daughter named Ruth, (Steve's mother) who is a member of this list and kindly informed us that there was something wrong with the data. If you refer to her post on the 16th, she is indeed the Daughter of Dorothy Taulbee and John Lemon, only not the same Dorothy Taulbee. Ruth also informed us that Rose had not correctly identified Dorothy, Stewart's daughter. Rose said Dorothy Irene, Ruth told us Dorothy Ilene was the correct middle name. Since Ruth is Dorothy Ilene's first cousin, she ought to know. The Dorothy Taulbee on page 61 was a daughter of Stewart Taulbee, son of Jefferson Davis Taulbee, Jr and and Sarh J. Lykins (See page 59). Stewart had a sister, Dorothy, who was Ruth's mother. (See page 62) This Dorothy married John Lemon (according to Ruth's post, John Walter Lemon) and the child was our list cousin Ruth Ann, who married Steve Lesh.(Again Rose had it wrong, should be Lech). Rose lists 2 children, one of them Steve Jr, who also is a recent member of our list. Now, It is my fault for not reading farther, seeing Dorothy Taublee and John Lemon and thinking that was all their was. Just two more pages and I would have had it right. That is a lesson for me. Now, Ruth, can you tell us if Rose simply had it mixed up when she said your cousin married John Lemon, or were there two John Lemon's? Also is it true that she had no children? Can I blame part of this on Rose, or did I simply blow it? And welcome, both you and Steve to the list. We appreciate the corrected information you gave us and I will admit to being red faced for thinking too quickly I had the answer. Ruth and Steve, if either one of you send me your snail mail address, I will find time to copy the pages that partain to Jefferson Davis Taulbee, Jr, your uncles, cousins, etc as much as Rose had them. If anyone has anything not in Rose's book, would they please post them at this time. On page 26 of Rose's book it list Peggy Taulbee as the daughter of Margaret Allen and John CB Taulbee. My grandfather has told me that Cordelia was Peggys mother however I plan to speak to my grandfather soon and confirm that based on what I have found in Rose's book. Maybe Margaret died or there was a divorce and John took the children and Cordelia raised Peggy? It goes on to state that Peggy married ? Banks. That Banks was my great-grandfather Andrew Jackson Banks who for some reason changed his last name to Taulbee when he married Peggy. They had 2 boys, Johnny T. and Bennie G Taulbee. Peggy died when my grandfather, Bennie was about 2 yrs old. I have been attempting to locate a death certificate for Peggy Taulbee who died in approximately 1926, give or take a year and was suppose to have died in Breathitt County. So far I have not had much luck in locating the death certificate. She was suppose to have died while trying to take care of her ill brother-in-law who also died just a short time before her. If any cousins out there have any insight into this or who have better access to Breathitt County death certificates, I would greatly appreciate any help. Fixing the files (moravia@doitnow.com, 11/25/97 23:31) Resent-From: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com To: taulbee-l@rootsweb.com, jayken@usroots.com Thanks to advice from list cousins Richard and Jill, I have found the following technique will just about produce a perfect copy, at least it did with the first file of the Lawrence County 1880 Census. 1 Load into Word Perfect or another word processor with enough program memory to handle very large text files. 2. Before doing anything else, with the cursor at the top of Word Perfect, change the font to new curier (a font in which each letter takes up the same space). 3. Change the font size to 10. 4. Change the page setup to 8.5 x 11 landscape. (If you do not finish the file at one sitting, you must do this each time you reload because the wordprocessor will load your default settings) 5. Use only the spacebar to line up the columns, never the tab key. (The tab key gives inconsistant results) 6. Line up one entire column at a time starting at the left. Since moving a column to the right moves everything on the line to the right. 7. After you are finished, save as ascii text. 8. Reload and do steps 1-4 and see if everything lined up. Use the space bar to fix what did not, again, one column at a time, all the way down, left to right. These steps make everything line up almost perfect. At least with the census. Have not tried it with the Vitals, but should work. Ken, (folks, that's the other address on this note, he is the USGENWEB National Census coordinator,) we will keep things on the web site for a while, but as I need web space, like if people keep wanting to send us files, I will gradually drop off the files that end up in the archives or on county pages. I will check the archives before deciding which to discard first and will leave a link to their new home. If you regrab lawc80a.txt, it will now line up just like it should, at least in Netscape. Those of you who feel like helping, just let me know what you are working on so we don't all do the same thing. The display leaves a lot to be desired, but I decided that since it may take awhile to get them into a perfect format, and they are readable by those who pay attention to column headings, I would place them on the public pages. Maybe that will get us some more help, who knows. Those of you who offered to help, now is the time. If you would let me know which one you want to work on, I will make sure no two of you are working on the same one. Richard is working on the Johnson County Birth records and may have some tips on making text converted from Word Perfect behave itself. I do know it sometimes displays better on the browser than it does in the word processor. If you are willing to help, but need the files broken into smaller units, let me know. I don't expect to find any of our direct Taulbees in these files, but the surnames that married into the family are sprinkled all through the files. They are now posted on the Taulbee pages. The abstracts total a half megabyte less than the originals, which is good. But they still total over 954,000 bytes so I am going to have to pull the originals off our closed page to free up web space. I will also be pulling the original texts of Carole's 1920 Wolfe census now that the new files are in place. This will free up about three megabytes, which I am going to need in the future I will leave a note that the originals may be requested via email by anyone who wishes them. The obits are in 25 files, A - Z, no X. None of family had a surname beginning with X so far. Profitt/Hollon (MARYHERZOG@aol.com, Wed 23:02) Resent-From: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com To: taulbee-l@rootsweb.com I am searching for information on the parents of Stephen Profitt and Catherine Hollon. Their son Columbus married Ellen Sparks who is a direct descendant of Polly Ann Taulbee and Peter Tolson. I found the Profitts in the 1910 Wolfe Co KY census in Hazel Green. He says he is age 55, married 6 years to Catherine, age 36. Lummie(Columbus) is age 4, and Henry, 3. I have found lots of information on earlier Profitts and Hollons but have been unable to connect these two to any of them. I'm hoping that someone who has studied the Taulbees and all the families that they married into might have some clues that could lead me to their parents. Thanks, Mary Thomas L. Janelle Martin martin@reno.quik.com ---------------------- Lost Taulbees (moravia@doitnow.com, 11/29/97 22:36) Resent-From: TAULBEE-L@rootsweb.com To: taulbee-l@rootsweb.com There are several of you who have posted queries, with as far as I know, little or now success in finding the elusive relative. Some of these were posted when we had only about a dozen members, we now have 40, but that is still a very small number and the person with your answers may not yet have joined. What I am going to do is create a page on our web site (and make a very noticible link on the home page) where these queries can be left for months. My counter shows about 100 visits per day over the past two months (mostly due to the census links) and placing your queries there may result in someone who knows something about them seeing them. Many of the important people in our line are not named Taulbee, in fact most of us are not, so you need not restrict your queries to that surname, just relate them to our large family some way. If you wish to make use of this page, compose a query with as much information as possible and post it to the list with the word somewhere in the subject line. I will then post it to the page within a few hours to a couple of days depending on if I am working the day it comes in. I would rather not just lift these off the archives. It would be better if you composed it the way you want it to appear. You may include scanned documents or phots in these queries if you think they will help, but send those to me by private enail, not to the list. Hope this will be of help to some of you.
