If you will post what documentation you come across, it will be archived both on my web page and on rootsweb. (Although I cannot tell you how to retrieve the archives from rootsweb, it can be done). That way we will know what information we can depend upon and what we still need to look for. If you do not have documentation, but have family oral histories you believe to be reliable, please post those also, lest they someday become lost. As two of our list cousins can testify to, these oral histories may be the only way to straighten out a line. -- Robert L. Most of these, but not all are part of the GENWEB project. If you consider that each URL is one town or county for one year, and how many counties there are, and how many census years there are, we are along ways from getting the entire census on line. Many states have volunteer transcribing some of the counties, but many also have no one actively transcribing. If we really want to see the census on line, some of us are going to have to help. I have posted all 100 URLs to my web site below. You can also access them through the USGENWEB project. Many of the URLS are slow loading due to the loads on the servers, and for some, too many gifs to load. Despite the slowness, we owe the volunteers our thanks and our support. While at the family history center last Saturday I took a quick look through the IGI for England. Only got through a few localities, but did deterimine that DALBY was very common. The only TALBY I found was the marriage of Edward in Cambridge mentioned in Rose's book. I have been scanning the on line census for DALBY and have not found any yet. That only means, I suppose, that it is no where near as common here as in England. Anyway, if Dalby is the source for Talby, we have our work cut out for us on the other side of the pond. The other close phonetic possibility is TALBOY of which there are several examples on both sides of the Atlantic. Louise's suggestions are of course, all possibilities. -- Robert L. George ------ Surprise, Arizona -------------------------------------------------------------- From - Wed Oct 15 09:13:07 1997 From: moravia@doitnow.com Subject: William Hitchcock Taulbee and Margaret Canady First, we still have shy lurkers who are on the list but never have introduced themselves or told us who they are researching. Please do so and just maybe we can be of help to each other. You others, may reintroduce yourselves now and then to remind us of what you are looking for. This is mainly for the benifit of the majority of our list cousins who have not latched on to a copy of Rose's book. I have spent some time at the FHC trying to see if anyone has claimed to know for sure who the mother of the early children of William Hitchcock Taulbee was. No such luck as of yet. In Rose's book, she refered to a letter by John Dial Taulbee, a son of William Barry Taulbee, and thus grandson of William Hitchcock Taulbee and Margaret Canady. She did not print or quote the letter, nor did she say where it was found. She did say that John claimed that William Hitchcock Taulbee did not marry Margaret Canady (a variant of Kennedy, also spelled Cannady which means we all have some Irish in us) until after the end of the war. Rose is obviously referring to the Revolution, meaning 1783 or later for the marriage and not the Creek/Seminoe Indian War of 1776. We know from a list cousin that Rose's notes were destroyed, so we have no way of knowing the source for this letter unless one of you can find another copy. Samuel Taulbee, son of William was born in 1774 or 75 according to Rose. I did not find him on the IGI, but did find the others. Andrew Jackson Taulbee was born in 1776 in Orange County, NC. The other Children were born in Wilkes County after 1784. The question is the maternal parentage of Samuel and Andrew, common ancestors to the vast majority of us on this list. There has been no record found of a marriage of William Hitchcock Taulbee to anyone at anytime, so there are not dates to refer to. There is a strong possibility that Samuel and Andrew were from a previous wife, or a possibility they are Margaret's children and the marriage did not take place until later. Rose believes Margaret's father is Andrew Canady, who had a mill in Wilkes County as early as 1779. This of course does not mean the Canady family was not in Orange County three years earlier. Anyway, this is my number one search, just who was the mother of Samuel and Andrew? While there, I also tried to pin more down on the family of Adam Birchfield, who fathered Mary Anne, a common ancestor to many of us, at age 13 and married Nancy Taulbee, daughter of William Hitchcock Taulbee and Margaret Canady (and 9 years his senior). Did not find anything except that the IGI has the same date of their marriage as does Rose, 20 August 1808 in Wilkes County, and his name listed as BURCHFIELD. The only other of his surname I found in Wilkes County was the mariage of Thomas Burchfield to Susanna Wiles on 14 November 1821. Nothing to tie the two together. Anyway, those of you who are always silent, please speak up. No one is going to flame anyone on our list and we can't share if we are silent. Your thoughts on the above, even is speculation, are desired and encouraged. -- Robert L. Taulbee. > martin@reno.quik.com Glen, I am posting this to our Taulbee list so about 20 of my distant cousins can, if they choose, add to or correct what I am writing you concerning your query. This is going to a difficult one. The best documented Taulbee line, perhaps the only cpmprehensive Taulbee line, is that of William Hitchcock Taulbee, and is documented in Rose Taulbee's family history. I have found nothing in that line which can account for a Thomas L. Taulbee who could have been in Lousiana in 1867. Judge James Franklin Taulbee, a great grandson of William Hitchcock Taulbee took his family to Texas and was a judge there in 1907, and given his age, much earlier. I have no idea of when he arrived. There is nothing I have found in his line, or of his siblings, to account for Thomas, although going to Texas by way of Louisiana would make sense. We do not know anything about two brothers of William Hitchcock Taulbee, Samuel and Isaac. We don't know if they stayed in North Carolina or came into Kentucky with William. We don't even know if they lived to adulthood. All were born before the Revolution. We do know that a third brother Zepaniah remained in Maryland when William's father brought the Clan to North Carolina. One would think that this new Taulbee would have to have been born, at the latest, by the late 1830s to have married and had children by 1854. Another probem is that Taulbees often had more than one middle name, and sometimes used the middle name as the given name. Still, none of the grandchildren, known to me, of William Hitchcock Taulbee fits into the time and location you have given us. It may take awhile before we can determine if your Taulbee is a previously unknown grandchild of William Hitchcock Taulbee or descends from one of his brothers, which would be like discovering a new species of dinosaur, quite a discovery. To make things worse, we have Taulbees who were not born Taulbees, but simply assumed the name, which caused a bit of a problem tracing them down. If This Taulbee is important to you, you could post to the Taulbee list anything else you know about them, any known relatives other than the children, etc. Maybe one of my Taulbee list cousins will remember reading something about Taulbees in Louisiana following the Civil War and post something that will point us in the right direction. I know a simple, Don't know, can't help you would have been a shorter response, but we like to encourage all people with a Taulbee connection to stick around and try to help each other. Louise Gaskill, one of the three original founding members of this list has transcribed the 1850 Breathitt County, KY Census, one that is quite important to the Taulbee line. I have placed it on our web site and forwarded it to the genweb census project to see if they want to load it to their archives. It is a text document you can save to your hard disk and view in your word processor off line. It does not have an index, but you can use the function in the edit icon of the WP. Also, the third founding member has some time ago transcribed the 1920 Wolfe County, census which was no small undertaking, and also important to the Taulbee and related lines. She has also offered it to us but first we have to figure out how to get it out of an old program called Display Write 4 and into a text document we can upload. If any of you are familiar with this program and have a solution, would like to hear it. -- Robert L. If you want to use it now, here are the URLs: http://www.doitnow.com/~moravia/wolfpre.txt In this document Carole expained what information the cenus gave us. http://www.doitnow.com/~moravia/20index.txt http://www.doitnow.com/~moravia/1920wolf.txt Then you will have to use the find function on the browser, or in you word processor if you download it. The problem with it right now is that Word Perfect opened it, but did not convert the Tabs, so that two families side by side are put together as one. Since it also, seems to have deleted some vertical spacing, I am not sure I can restore it without seeing an original. So, Carole, if I can impose on you for a hard copy off your printer, I can fix that fairly quickly. Now as to the TIF images which 5 of you have asked for. I went back to the FHC this AM and copied over a dozen more IGI sheets from England, which take the TALBY and possible surname variants back to 1160. Hopefully one of you will some day have the time to pursue this across the pond. I do not have time to do so right now, beyond what I can find locally. More URLs Cousin Carole wrote YOU HAVE MY PERMISSION TO COPY AND GIVE AWAY ANY OF THE OBITS THAT YOU WANT TO. They are public record and for the benefit of researchers, Thank you Carole. I have broken the huge file into 4 smaller files and placed links to them on [text deleted] which should make them much easier to load. (Please remember the URL, it will not appear as a link on my web page. This post will not appear in the public archives for the same reason) Again I am keeping this page closed to only list members, or maybe a few other serious researchers. The reason is as follows: 1. There has to be a benefit to belonging to the list. 2. Obituaries are not public records, they are copyrighted material belonging to the newspapers who publish them. Many newspapers are refusing permission for their obits to be posted to a web page. Carole has not copied the obit, she has extracted the genealogical information from them and I have not posted them to a public web page, but to a closed research page, open only to us. Both should keep us out of trouble. The facts contained in the obits cannot be copyrighted, just the wording of the obit. The obits are not in alphabetical order and it would not matter if they were. Much of the genealogical information is contained within the text. You will have to use the function of your browser or word processor. Let's give thanks to Carole for her hard work and generosity. Next to the late Rose Taulbee, she is the expert on these lines, and we intend to keep her around for awhile. I noticed that another five or six new members have signed on to the list. I have to find time to get a better letter to rootsweb welcoming you to the list. So far we have been a very friendly bunch. You can go to the Taulbee page Archives to see what has been said by the more senior members. Not everyone has been successful in finding whom they are looking for, but so far everyone has been friendly and helpful. When ever you feel like it let us know who you are and what you are looking for. There is only one rule, and that is no one will ever flame anyone on this list and remain on it. Aside from that, the list is yours to use in any manner which will help your genealogical quests. -- Robert L. Taulbee family history ("Taulbee, Gerald H." , Mon 11:35) To: "'moravia@doitnow.com'" I am interested in learning how to acquire a copy of Rose Taulbee's history. I suppose I could ask at Borders Bookstore or something similar, but if you have a shortcut (like an address) for me, I'd appreciate it. By the way, I am a descendant of a Dr. Paul S. Taulbee, who was born and educated in Kentucky, practiced medicine and died in Duval County, TX sometime in the mid-1930s. My father (still living, in Annville, PA) was born in Benavides, TX in 1926 to Dr. Paul S. Taulbee, Jr., who died in 1970. The first Paul S. Taulbee I mentioned above was his father. Back beyond him things get a bit fuzzy, although I do know that there was a William Harrison Taulbee (supposedly served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War) and a William Preston Taulbee (Congressman from Kentucky, assassinated in the U.S. Capitol in the late 1800s) in my past. I have some other facts and info written down at home (most of it rather disjointed), too long to go into in an email message. So anyway, whatever info you could provide me to continue dabbling into the family history would be much appreciated. To: "'taulbee-L@rootsweb.com'" Subject: Paul S. Taulbee I made a mistake yesterday when I posted the info on my great-grandfather. I had his name as Dr. Paul S. Taulbee, Sr. Actually his name was Dr. James Menifee Taulbee. His sons were Dr. Paul S. Taulbee, Jr. (died in 1970) and James Menifee Taulbee II (died in the 1980s). His daughter was Gladys (married a Howard King - my dad's namesake- of King Bros. and Clyde Beatty Circus fame). She died in the mid-1970s. So, to reiterate one more time to set the record straight: My father is Howard King Taulbee - born in 1926 in Waiteville, WV; raised in Benavides, Duval County, TX; served in U.S. Navy during WWII; civilian career for U.S. Navy, Mechanicsburg, PA and retired from there in 1983. Now living in Annville, PA. Married Phyllis Blauch in 1952 and had 5 children. My grandfather was Dr. Paul S. Taulbee. Born in TX around 1897, died 1970 and is buried near my dad's place in Annville, PA. Married Lilian Hinchee (her family in from Monroe County, WV) probably in the early 1920s. He practiced medicine in Benavides, TX during the early 1930s. They had 4 children - Paul S. Taulbee, Jr. (living in Schaumburg, IL), Maryanne (lived most of her life in Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, MD; died around 1990); William Taulbee (killed by a drunk driver in Benavides when he was 11); and my dad, Howard Taulbee (discussed above). My great-grandfather was Dr. James Menifee Taulbee. Born in KY (I'm not sure when), went to medical school there, along with a brother or maybe a cousin. He went to practice medicine in TX I believe in the early 1900s; practiced for many years in the small town of Benavides until his death in the mid 1930s. I visited both the homestead in Benavides and the graves of both him and his wife in nearby Alice, TX about 10 years ago. A few of the older Mexican-Americans in Benavides with whom I spoke actually remembered my great-grandfather from when they were children, with fondness. I'm not sure of his wife's maiden name. His children are discussed above. All of the other info in my original message from yesterday (about William Harrison Taulbee and William(?) Preston Taulbee) is correct to the best of my recollection. I am most interested in discovering my lineage on back from my great-grandfather, James Menifee Taulbee. As for the book, if there are any folks out there who would be kind enough to arrange for me to borrow it, I would be willing to photocopy it and would, of course, guarantee safe return. Or, if anyone would be kind enough to send me copies of pages which might be of interest to me, my address is: Jerry Taulbee 736 Ridgelyn Drive Dallastown, PA 17313 Finally, I would like to comment on the origins of the name. The whole thing is a complete mystery to me. I've always heard that the name originated as the Norman Taillebois and was later anglicized to Taulbee. My brother did some research into records dating back to the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and did find some Taillebois listed among the French invaders. I had also heard that the name, in some instances was further anglicized to Underwood. Now yeseterday I read that Dalby or Talby is suggested, which would seem to makes sense phonetically. What doesn't make sense to me was that if the original ancestors came over here as Talby or Talbee, why on earth would they make the spelling revert to the Taul? It makes no sense whatsoever to me. Most folks who immigrated here naturally tended to make anglicize a "foreign-looking" or "foreign-sounding" name, not the other way around, which changing back to the Taul would certainly suggest. Then, of course, there's the nagging question of why they came to this side of the pond, which of course may remain pure speculation for all time and eternity. Well, I suppose that's enough rambling for one day. Thanks in advance for all your support. Jerry Taulbee P.S. - one other thing. Back in the 1980s(?) there was a movie made called "The Moonshine Wars", starring Alan Alda. The setting was KY, and one of the main characters was a Dr. Taulbee, played by William Holden (I think). I've always been curious as to whether or not any part of Dr. Taulbee's character was rooted in fact or did some scriptwriter just pull a name out of a KY phonebook at random.
