Taulbee Family
History
by Rose Taulbee
Transcribed by Carole, Jill, and Louise
For some time Taulbee researchers have toyed with the idea of adding to and correcting information in the late Rose Taulbee's history of the Taulbee family. Her work was a massive undertaking over a lifetime. She passed away before a second edition could be published and her notes were lost. The following is an electronic edition of her work. While mostly accurate, it is incorrect in places and incomplete. It is presented as written and must speak for itself.

TAULBEE
This is a record of seven plus
generations of the Samuel and Elizabeth Hitchcock Talby-Taulbee family,
covering a span of almost three hundred years. Like most families, there
were among us; saints, sinners
and the in betweeners, including, doctors, lawyers, farmers, moonshiners,
teachers, ministers, and soldiers,
having been represented in all the wars. The blood of one of our family
remains a dark blotch on the steps
of our nations' capitol. Yes! a shooting, hints of a scandal, revenge and
victory. All a part of this history
and our heritage.

COAT OF ARMS
Many people display a coat of
arms, very few are entitled to do so. Unless we are able to trace our line
DIRECTLY back to the one to whom the coat of arms was granted, we are not
entitled to use it.
CREST * A crest is NOT a coat
of arms. A Crest is an addition to the coat of arms, given to the owner for
meritorious service or bravery beyond the call of duty.
TAULBE * TAUB - A * German. The word means "DOVE", "AT THE SIGN OF A DOVE"
TAILLEBOIS * TALIBOIS * FRENCH - Means "CUTTER OF UNDERGROWTH" (Wood)
TALLIS BOIS ENGLISH - means one who lives near a copse or thicket.
Quoting the "DIRECTOR OF THE HENNESSEEE STUDIOS", makers of Coats of arms,
"TAILLEBOIS or TAILLEBOURG is also given under the name of TAUBE."
J. B.. Rietstap, (French) his
book shows 26 pictures of TAUBE and allied family coats of arms. All 26
displaying either a piece of wood or a dove and of these 26, 16 have BOTH the
Dove and the Wood,
indication a connection between the French * English and the German
families. Was told that Rietstap book
had been translated into English, but have not been able to find one.

MASSACHUSETTS
Our earliest finds are in Salem, Mass. 1635, the family of John Talby.
John and wife Dorothy and 5 of their
7 children; John, Ann, Stephe, Jane, Difficulty. Their's was a tragic
history. The wife Dorothy was a normal
housewife in every way until after the birth of Difficulty (why else the
name?) She changed completely, to a
very different person, silent and more and more belligerant with the family,
even became violent. It is said
she had a vision from God to kill all her family and succeeded in killing
Difficulty. She was adjudged insane
and hanged in Boston, Mass. 12-6-1638. Her Doctor and Minister were very
sorry that they had not taken
better care of her, said that she really was very ill. John Talby had a LOT
of land, this being between 20
and 30 acres. He had a cottage in S. Field Point, his homestead by the
Meeting House. He was a
proprietor, so had a business of some kind. He died Jan. 1645 in Salem.

page 4 MARYLAND
The very first hint of our
Maryland connection, was when a distant cousin in Osawatomie,
Kansas, picked up a book on Maryland Marriages and found the one of Samuel
Talby to Elizabeth
Hitchcock. With that find the search was on. We had already found the will
of Samuel Tolby in Orange
Co., NC in which he named his son William HITCHCOCK Tolby and we just knew
that HITCHCOCK had to
be Elizabeth's last name. The Cousin in Kansas is Betty Jiminez of Isaac D.
Taulbee's history.
While searching in the very big
library in St. Louis, found a small book with tax records
from Maryland. There we found that "Edward Talby" paid tax on land, on the
north side of
Gunpowder and on Back River for the years 1699 thru 1707. Gunpowder is also
a river and only about 60
miles long and was in Baltimore Co., it now is in Harford Co. Next found
that WILLIAM HITCHCOCK also
lived on the north side of Gunpowder, this made the two families neighbors.
Then found that Wm.
Hitchcock left a will, copy next page, also copy of Samuel's will. Edward
Talby died ca 1710 Mary Talby
administrator of estate 1711. Then Mary died and WM. HITCHCOCK is the
executor of her estate. We
now knew that they knew each other. Two possible solutions to this
information we now have. WAS Mary
Talby a sister to Wm. Hitchcock OR was MARY the first wife of Wm.H., the
daughter of Edw & Mary Talby?
Don't think she was the daughter of Edw and Mary because she was married and
had had 4 children (4 that
were recorded) She might be Edward's sister. Hope someone stumbles onto the
answer to this question.
Since we have room here, will record Wm. Hitchcock's will on this page.

page 7 SAMUEL TAULBEE (1706)
From the Maryland Hall of
Records in Annapolis, MD Deed Bk TBD 217 thru
220 for Baltimore County. Samuel Talbee leased land from Thomas Brerewood for
farming. It was a total of
83 1/3 acres. This located on "My Lady's Manor (Lord Baltimore Gift." Samuel
was described as about 38
years of age, wife Elizabeth about 21 and son Zephaniah about 3.
My Lady's Manor was a tract of
land of many thousands of acres that was given to Charlotte Calvert, she
the niece of Lord Baltimore, as a wedding gift when she married Thomas
Brerewood. Thomas was very
poor business man and had to lease, sell and in some cases lost much of the
property. He was only able to
hold on to it for a few years. This was mainly between 1740 and 1755.
Chancery Records of Baltimore Co.,
Vol 25, pg. 625-632, there is a dispute over the land that was leased by
Samuel Talbie. It would seem that
Samuel had a right to sell his lease, which he did, date not shown, but he
left Maryland and went to NC.
We don't know just when he left Maryland. This record, that is part of it,
was in year 1792 when Zephaniah
said that his parents had gone to Carolina. Our first record of Samuel in NC
is 1783, but was there in 1776
with Wm. we are sure.
The Administration of Acc'ts,
Baltimore co., MD, Mary Talby administrator of the estate of Edward Talby,
1711
In Box 3, Folder 73, 1713, an Inventory for Mary Talby of Baltimore Co., find
that WILLIAM HITCHCOCK is
the executor, he the father of Elizabeth who married Samuel, Taulbee, Talbee.
Terms of the lease of land are as follows.
To pay every year the yearly
rent of five hundred pounds of good merchantable leafe tobacco
during the terms of the above said lives. The tobacco to be packed every
year in good order condition in a
good and sufficient hogshead, with as much if by the said Thomas Brerwood
his heirs executors or as shall
make the said hogshead full eight pounds clear of wood and rolled or carryed
to the nearest landing to the
Mannor and safely housed the said hogshead packing nails and rolling all at
the charge and expence of the
said Samuel Talbie his heirs executors administrators or assigns every year."
It continues on and on, but this gives an idea of the cost of the acreage he
leased. (the above copied
exactly as recorded).
All the above information can be found in Annapolis, MD if anyone wants full record.
All of the information found in
Maryland so far has been found by MARY VOTH of Des Moines, Iowa and
Rochelle Vandenburg of Virginia Beach, VA., all except the marriages of
Samuel & Elizabeth and Ann &
Zephaniah, those were found by Betty Jiminez as before stated.

| Where are you coming from, Lomey Carter, So airly over the snow? And what's them pretties you got in your hand, And where you aiming to go? |
| "Step in, Honey:
Old Christmas morning I ain't got nothing much; Maybe a bite of sweetness and corn bread, A little ham meat and such. |
| "But come in, Honey!
Sally Anne Barton's Hungering after your face. Wait till I light my candle up. Set down! There's your old place. |
| "Now where you been so

| "Taulbe ain't to home
this morning . . . I can't scratch up a light: Dampness gets on the heads of the matches; But I'll blow up the embers bright." |
| "Needn't trouble, I
won't be stopping: Going a long ways still. "You didn't see nothing, Sally Ann Barton?" "Up on the graveyard hill?" |
| What should I see there, Sally Anne Barton? "Well, sperits do walk last night." "There were an elder bush a-blooming While the moon still give some light." |
| "Yes, elder bushes, they bloom, Old Christmas, And critters kneel down in their straw, Anything else up in the graveyard?" "One thing more I saw: |
| I saw my man with his head all bleeding Where Taulbe's shot went through." "What did he say?" "He stooped and kissed me." "What did he say to you?" |
| "Said, Lord Jesus forguv your Taulbe; But he told me another word: He said it soft when he stooped and kissed me. That were the last I heard." |

WILLIAM HITCHCOCK TAULBEE
Our first record of Wm. H.
Taulbee in North Carolina is as follows:
Wm. Talby in Rev. War, quote "Wm. Talby, member of Capt. Wm. Williams Co.,
7th Orange Militia. List
given me at Hillsborough by Capt. Wm. of Col. Butler's Battalion, by Thomas
Person, Gr. Gen. - This from
Roster of Soldiers from No. Car., in the Rev. War. Published by NCDAR
8-2-1776. This action was war
with the CHEROKEE, Creek and Seminole Indians 1776-78, along the Eno River
which is in Orange Co., N.
Car.
Wm. Talby paid tax in Orange
Co., N. C. 1779, in the amount $504.40 on land. This was given me as
written. Am told Pound Sterling only, was used, but the above is as I have
said.
Next record (just received
6-1882) this in Wilkes Co., N.C.
Wilkes Co., N.C. Land Entries: William Talbey

Reg. of Deeds Office:
Wm. Talbey bot from State of N.C, Grant Book A-1, page 484-1784. Grant State
of N.C.
#564 - 100 acres - East Fork Roaring River Beginning "A". In the year 1785,
page 423 - Bk. A-1, Quote "To

Wm. Talbey bot from Jesse Hall,
150 acres in 1798 on the South Fork of Roaring River, which included the
Mill and the Homeplace. Deed Bk. D page 442. This indenture witnessed by
Jacob Adams, Geo. Wheatley,
Joel Stamper and Jesse Hall. Searcher found no record of the sale of this
land on record in Wilkes Co.,
N.C.
In the WILKES GENEALOGICAL
BULLETIN, Quote "List of persons drafted in our Class - We sign our
names this 7th June 1782." Twenty one men signed including WILLIAM TOLBEY.
No officer was named. A Wm. Whitaker was named on same page.
In Wilkes Co., NC -ANDREW CANADY
had a mill on Bugaboo Creek (tributary of the Yadkin R.) in Wilkes
Co. He was a member of the Roaring Creek Baptist Church in `779. Was a
delegate to the Conference
and served as Elder. He is very likely Margaret's father.

WILLIAM HITCHCOCK TAULBEE
The family migrated to Kentucky 1817, all except Andrew and Elizabeth
1820 Federal census of Floyd
Co., and 1830 Fed. Census of Perry Co., Ky., Wm. Talby is included in the
family of son Wm. Barry Talbee.
We so far have NO PROOF that Wm.
Talbee was in either the battle of the Cow Pens or Kings Mountain.
The battle of The Cow Pens was fought 1-17-1781 and as you have read on
previous page, Wm. Talbee
was very busy in Wilkes Co., N.C.
We have a question; Was Wm.
Hitchcock married once or twice? If the John Dial Taulbee letter is correct,
that he married Margaret Canady AFTER the War, then he most certainly had a
wife long before that.
Elizabeth, Samuel and Andrew
were definitely born before 1783. It would appear that either Elizabeth and
husband or Andrew and wife were living at home of Wm. H. at 1800 census
time. Samuel was married and
had 2 sons already by 1800.
There is the possibility that
Wm. married in Orange Co., N.C. or even in Maryland and this 1st wife died and
he remarried a second time and to Margaret. If he had only one wife, then he
married Margaret Canady as
early as 1772.
The story that Margaret Canady
was a Cherokee Indian, is without foundation at this time. I would hope that
Wm. would not have tried to kill off all his wife's family; refer to his
stint in the N.C. Militia, he was fighting the
CHEROKEE, Creek and Seminole Indians in 1776.
It would be sad to think that he came home one day to tell her, "Well I just
finished the last of your tribe
today."
Also sent with this latest information from Wilkes Co., N.C. was the following:
FRANCIS TOLBEY 1779 N. Side of Yadkin River (if this was a purchase of land, no acerage mentioned.)
Have no idea this man's connection to our family. He COULD be brother of Wm. H.
