| SAMUEL Tolby (TAULBEE) |
|
(c) 1999 TFDG Again the spelling Tolby and Talbee as opposed to Taulbee are based on the spelling usually found in records of the time. The names have been interchanged by various researchers and in documents. We have tried to use the more common example for the individual, but it should not be considered as chiseled in stone. Taulbee is a more recent variation in Samuel's line that is probably a Kentucky variant based on where the individual went to school more than anything else. The spelling of the variant as Taulbee does not seem to appear prior to about the 1840s. Phonetically, they were the same regardless of spelling. This is most likely going to change as the variant moves into nearly all the 50 states and some overseas areas. [B. G.] Samuel Tolby, was born 1773 in Orange County, North Carolina. From page 17 of “Talby, Tolby, Taulbee, Tolbee, Taulbee Family”, by Rose Taulbee It is said Samuel went to Indiana with 7 of his 10 sons. We have found only 6 in Indiana, and only 9 overall. Samuel and his brother Isaac D. left North Carolina early 1801. Samuel's son, Wm. A., was born 1802 in Tennessee. They were in Floyd Co., KY by 1804. In 1806 that part of Floyd Co., became Clay County and Samuel and Isaac are listed as Colonial Families of Clay County Kentucky. They settled near the mouth of Rockhouse Creek. This area became Perry County in 1821. Samuel left Clay County and went up into what became Breathitt County in the area we now call "Up on Frozen". The rest of the family in North Carolina except Andrew and Elizabeth came into this region in 1817. Samuel remained there through 1826 and then went with the 7 sons to Indiana.
