Mary Talbee. She married a James Kennedy. I also do not have birth of marriage dates. Emilie (Millie) Talbee born August 26, 1744. I have no marriage information on her and while she is mentioned as a daughter of Samuel Taulbee and Elizabeth Hitchcock in Rose Taulbee's Taulbee Family History, she is not mentioned among the children of Samuel and Elizabeth in Henry Peden's book 'Marylanders to Carolina, Migration of Marylanders to NC and SC prior to 1800." I know that one of Samuel and Elizabeth's sons, Zephaniah, remained in Maryland after Samuel left for the Carolinas. As far as I know, all the children were born in Maryland which would place the Migration to South Carolina as being after 1761 when Isaac was born, and prior to 1776 when William Hitchcock Taulbee is listed as a member of the Orange County Militia. B Rose Taulbee's family history has substantial information on William's sons, Samuel and Isaac, but little on his brothers, Samuel and Isaac, nor has any other source I have found. This is in error, he is there. Rose first lists him as Stephen H. Taulbee, son of Greenberry and Elizabeth Jane Combs. Then she lists him a couple pages farther on as Steven Sewell Taulbee. One of the problems with Rose's book is she often changed the spelling of the names each time she listed someone. In this case she wrote that he is listed as Stephen H. Taulbee on the census and as Steven Sewell Taulbee on his death record at Jackson, Kentucky. Since we are dealing with Kentucky, neither one may be correct. Anyway, his mother was Elizabeth Jane Combs and he married Mattie Combs. There are numerous Combs connections to the Taulbee line and our cousin Louise has posted some of them and we will get more posted as time goes by. There is a Combs list on rootsweb and they have a web page for the Southern Combs. I should warn you that the Combs list is very chaotic in that there are about twenty different conversations going on at once including queries, answers, arguments and what not. Unlike this list, all replies go to the Combs list unless you remember to delete them as an adressee. On this list, all replies go to the sender unless you add the list as an adressee. Once you get past that, More information about that line is available when you ask the right questions. -- Robert L. George ------ Surprise, Arizona ------------------------------------------------------------------ From - Sat Sep 06 09:41:28 1997 From: moravia@doitnow.com Subject: How shall we use this list? This list will be a month old on Monday. We now have 17 subscribers, although some have not yet gotten over their shyness and introduced themselves. It is time for the original 17 to have some input as to how we should run the list. Do we want to be like the Combs list where everything, no matter what is posted to the list? While we are still small enough to decide, do we want to have strict topic guidelines? This is kind of difficult, since it is not moderated and no one is going to censor the posts. The only way to enforce it is to chide those who violate whatever guidelines we have and unsub those who insist on violation. Or maybe we don't want any guidelines at all. My sole purpose in starting the list, with encouragement from cousins Louise and Carole, was that I wanted to bring as many of us together as possible. I believe that anything that is of value to more than one member should be posted. In any event, because so many of us are using Rose's book and we do not have her notes, and she makes numerous small errors, mostly in names and dates, I am thinking that any thing we find in a record, or other reliable source should be posted to the list so we can either strengthen what she wrote, or if necessary, correct it. I also feel that anything we find that is not in Rose's book (And at least half the Taulbee line is not there) should be posted to the list. If we do not have good documentation for the information but believe it to be correct through a preponderance of circumstantial evidence, we should still post it as a starting place for others. Those reading it should take it as a starting point and not something carved in stone. Our Cousin Louise can tell you what happens when a previously unknown marriage suddenly shows up in a line that was thought to be well documented. If we have information we have doubts about, we can still post it, say where it came from, and maybe together we can decide about it. Also, although Rootsweb archives the posts, I am also keeping them on the Taulbee Web Page. I have many megabytes of unused storage space and this way we don't have to remember how to retrieve archives from Rootsweb. So let me know your thoughts. This will be much more useful as our list rather than my list. -- Robert L. I have done research on the Taulbee family for about 9 years along with lots of other familes in Eastern Kentucky. I started with a few photo copied pages of the Rose Taulbee book. I have added lots of info to this family thru Cemtery records, Kentucky birth and death index, along with personal knowledge, obit, which I have collected since 1988 with a few given me years earlier. I have corresponded with lots of Taulbee members the past few years. I AM NOT ALWAYS CORRECT, I DO MAKE MISTAKES. If there is anything I have posted that is incorrect and you know it, please let me know and I'll do my best to correct it. I have been in the process of copying all the Wolfe County Marriages, listed in the Wolfe County Courthouse, a huge job since they start 1913 thru the present. I have published two volumes of Wolfe County Cemeteries. These were done with lots of hill climbing, standing in the rain and so cold I had to run to the car often to warm up, along with worrying about all those snakes in the summer. I did not copy all the cemeteries myself, after a friend and I started the project we were joined by many people who wanted to help and they sent me lists of their family cemeteries. I have also read and published the 1920 Wolfe County Census. Please keep in mind that it's very hard to get two dates that match, regardless of the sources. I would like to believe that birth certificates are the correct dates, but those also are in error. She then sent it to those cousins whose email she had. This was before the list was started up. I have placed that list on the Taulbee Pages for those who did not receive a copy. I think everyone's knowledge is helpful and often times seemingly unrelated material on people you have never heard of becomes very relevant when, six months later, you discover a new link and now another several pieces of the puzzle fall into place. I keep a personal archive of most of the messages I receive and it is amazing how many of them end up being useful, sooner or later. I do not know how that effects the possibility of a connection between the two surnames. We also know that it existed both in England (Cambridge) and the colonies, so it is not an American invention. M Sept 12, 1860 S10/16 This confirms information on page 74 of Rose's book and shows that once again we have to examine all possible spellings of the surname. BTW, I found a few occations where Taulbee and Talby are used as female Christian names rather than surnames. One example was James Kinnaman married Talby Dodson in Blount County, TN on 14 Aug 1825. --------------------------------------------------------------- From - Sat Sep 13 19:29:50 1997 From: moravia@doitnow.com Subject: William, son of Andrew - a third marriage Rose Taulbee had two marriages for William Taulbee, son of Andrew, born 1814 in Wilkes County, NC and died about 1885 in Humbolt, Nebraska. They were: Mary Campbell who bore William's son, Andrew Jackson Tolby (Andrew changed the spelling of the name as a result of the Patent Office Scandal of the late 1880s) in 1831, and Mrs Hanna Perry, 4 January, 1849 in Atchinson County MO. This marriage is found on CD 227 as William Tolby and (Mrs) Hanna Perry. There is an earlier marriage for William on this same CD: William TOLBY m Martha Ann Rosenbrough on August 8, 1842 in Livingston County, MO, giving rise to the possiblility that William married thrice rather than twice. No other Taulbees other than Andrew's line are known to be in Missouri at that time. ------------------------------------------------------. Another Tolby/Taulbee not in Rose's book (at least not as Sally) found on CD 2, with the same cavaet; Hartwell Newsom married Sally Tolby in Pike County, KY on 12 February, 1831. The marriage date just about requires that she be a daughter of one of the sons of William Hitchcock Taulbee. However, we do not know what happened to two of the brothers of William Hitchcock Taulbee, those brothers being Samuel and Isaac (brothers as opposed to his sons). I am a little concerned that some day we are going to find that some of the Taulbees we are listing as descendants of William Hitchcock Taulbee may actually be descendants of his brothers. But then that is what genealogy is all about, having to realign facts now and then. A Tolby/Taulbee marriage in Pike county is inconsistant with what we have seen with the rest of the family. Does anyone know where Pike County was in 1831 compared to the counties we normally find the Taulbees in? (Because the British burned so many of our records during the War of 1812, this will probably always remain unproven, but the circumstantial evidence is very very strong for this marriage. William Hitchcock's mother, Mary, married William Jones following the death of William Hitchcock I. Anne was his step sister but no blood relation. An EXCELLENT site on Mayflower history and genealogy. Very comprehensive; passenger lists, wills, Pilgrim texts, letters, resources, history of that time, etc. Of particular interest to me because I am a descendant of Isaac and Mary Allerton (paternal grandmother's line), but worth a good look regardless of your interests. http://members.aol.com/calebj/mayflower.html HITCHCOCK anyone? The following was sent to me as a result of a post I placed some time ago on NC-SC-ROOTS requesting any information anyone had that would confirm what Rose's book said about Adam Birchfield and Nancy Taulbee. Our cousin Louise had raised the question of did we really want to believe that Nancy Taulbee was fooling around with a young 13 year old and that they did not get married until later. Nancy here is listed as Nancy Caroline Taulbee. I had her as Nancy T. Taulbee. Rose does not give her middle name. While both could be correct (more than 1 middle name was not uncommon with the Taulbees) Caroline fits the naming pattern over several generations. The person supplying the information said she did not develop it but would answer any questions you wished me to forward to her. If anyone has the work cited, you might tell us what else it says. Adam and Nancy are my 5th g-grandparents and are in the direct line of several of you. Anyway, here it is: Descendants of Nancy Caroline (Tolby) Taulbee Generation No. 1 1. NANCY CAROLINE (TOLBY)1 TAULBEE was born 1784 in Wilks Co., North Carolina1, and died 23 March 1852 in Breathett Co., Kentucky2. She married ADAM BIRCHFIELD 20 August 1808 in Wilks Co., North Carolina3, son of JOHN BIRCHFIELD and ELIZABETH HENDRICK. Notes for NANCY CAROLINE (TOLBY) TAULBEE: In records of Lucy B. Dudek it stated that the parents of Nancy Tolbey were William Hitchcock Taulbee and Margaret (Canady) Kennedy. Notes for ADAM BIRCHFIELD: >From Lucy B. Dudek, Fayeteteville, NC From: In The Land of Breathitt, p. 36 "The legend of Daniel Boone in Breathitt is partly supported by the naming of Boone's Fork of Frozen Creek, whis is in the section where he is supposed to have hunted. Adam Burchfield, an early settler, told the story during his lifetime, that when he first came into the county, he found a hunter's camp on this branch of Frozen Creek, and on a nearby tree was carved the name of the first wilderness pathfinder, indicating it was his camp. Daniel Boone or one of his companions also cut his name in the bark o another tree along the Thom's Strong Fork of Frozen Creek." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Adam's sister, Elizabeth Birchfield, wed Nancy Tolbey's older brother, Samuel, in Wilkes Co., NC in 1796. They are in the 1800 Wilkes Co., Ky census with 2 sons. They mirgated to Floyd Co., KY in 1801. Adam was 13 years old when he fathered Mary Jane. Nancy was 9 years older than Adam. Whey wed when Adam was 16. Adam is on the 1810 Wilkes Co., Census, listed with a Loom in his household and paid tax on 200 yards of material. Adam lived on the Dan River. Most all tax payers on Dan River had looms. He and Nancy and children migrated to Floyd Co., Ky in 1817 along with Nancy's brothers and families. Adam was alive living with son, Adam in 1880, in Owsley Co., KY. He gave his age as 88. Children of NANCY TAULBEE and ADAM BIRCHFIELD are: i. There are no Taulbees on the list, but since there are about 4800 entries in each file, (one for the groom, another for brides), I thought I would list it here for those cousins who are searching other lines. It is the third item of value I have received from the Combs list. (the fist was meeting our cousin Louise, the second receiving information on several Combs - Taulbee marriages from a cousin not on this list). The URL is http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/sc/sca_marr.html The way it works, is that each aproz 700K file loads into you browser and you save it as a text file and then search through it off line in any word processor. There is also a zipped version for those who have slow modems or less memory for downloading. It is not searchable on line. I feeling a severe case of genealogical withdrawl by having to go back to work during the hours the library is open. Poor little me. I know Carole will have no pity for someone who gets the entire summer off and then feels sad about working in the fall. -- Robert L. George ------ Surprise, Arizona
