CHARLES C. CHAPPELEAR The subject of this sketch is one of
New Lexington's most public-spirited
citizens. He was born here, February
17, 1872, and graduated from the High
School. Became clerk in a clothing
store, conducted a book and stationery
store several years, and then engaged
in the general insurance business,

in all of its struggles and councils.
As Mayor he has been for the greatest
amount of civic improvement possible.
He urged and secured electric lights,
improved sidewalks, paved streets, and
is now urging water-works and a mod-
ern sewage system. He has also fought
for and secured a low rate of taxation.
He was one of the organizers of the
Board of Trade, called the first meet-
ing of same, and is now vice-president.
As secretary of the Fair Board, when

which he has ever since followed. In-
terested and active in politics, and
noted for his progressive spirit, he was
elected Mayor in 1894 on the citizens
ticket. Declining a second term, he
was, however, in 1898 again elected,
serving till 1900, when he again re-
fused another term. It was not till
1907 he again consented to accept the
place, and was in the fall of that year
elected by an overwhelming majority.
