C. L. WILLIAMS The subject of this sketch is a native
of Morgan County, Ohio; and was
born at Ringgold, June 28. 1856. He is
the third of a family of nine children,
whose parents were Colonel W. B.
Williams and Elizabeth (Wood) Wil-
liams.
Mr. Williams is now (1909) Superin-
tendent of the school at Thornville,
Ohio, and also Superintendent of the
schools of Thorn Township.
Since his coming to Thornville
(Sept., 1906) a splendid new school
building has been erected and equipped
for modern school work. The High
School has been advanced to First
Grade school; and the High School
enrollment almost doubled, reaching
at present seventy-four members. New
methods both in teaching and dis-
cipline have been introduced into the
work of both village and township, and
rapid progress is making under the
leadership of one whose life is devoted
to his chosen profession.
Mr. Williams received his education
in the district schools; at the National
Normal University at Lebanon, Ohio;
in summer normal schools; in his
home library; in the world of long
and successful experience in the var-
ious educational fields; and in the
"University of hard Knocks."
He began teaching in Union Town-

when he resigned to accept his present position. In Sepember 1893, Judge Charles E. Spencer appointed Mr. Williams mem- ber of the Board of County Examiners for a period of three years; at the expiration of that time, Judge J. B. Larimer reappointed him for a period of three more years. Mr. Williams is now (1909) serving his county in the same capacity under appointment by Judge James V. Hynus. In point of service Mr. Williams, without doubt, can point to the longest continuous record of any superintend- ent of schools in Perry County, having served twenty-four in two towns be- fore coming to his present position three years ago. Mr. Williams has served the county as president of Teachers' Institute for two terms, member of executive com- mittee for nine years. He is a member of Ohio Teachers' Reading Circle, and has been a member since its beginning, in 1883, of the Southern Ohio Teach- ers' Association, Masonic order, In- dependent order of Odd Fellows, and the Christian Church. In 1876, (July 19), he married Miss Viretta Hickerson of Ringgold, Ohio. his native village. Of the children of their union, eight are living---six sons and two daughters. The oldest five of the children have each, for a time, followed the pro- fession of their father. |

nition, in a call to the superintendency
