The history of the John PICKEN family. This John PICKEN was a cotton weaver in Gorbals, Scotland married to Jean LANGWILL (m. 5/30/1799). His son, William (b. 4/5/1800), clerk in Bridgeton, Scotland, married Margaret BARR. After William's death, his widow, Margaret, and a number of children immigrated to America and settled in the Tipton, Indiana area.

General background on the Pickens name, and a sketchy summary of early records. Follows mainly the descendants of the immigrant brothers Andrew, Robert, Israel. Lesser information on descendants of the brothers William and John. No information on descendants of Gabriel. Discussion of Thomas and Margaret (STEELE) Pickens of Massachusetts and their possible connection to the Pennsylvania immigrants. Some families more comprehensive than others. As with all works, time has shown some errors. A useful tool, this book can provide a good starting point, although it is not as comprehensive as PICKENS FAMILIES OF THE SOUTH. However, Rev. Sharp, author of PICKENS FAMILIES... corresponded with the authors of this book, and has not repeated some of the information contained in this work, as it was readily available when he published his book. Most notably will be the direct family lines of Mr. Monroe Pickens.

Thomas Pickens and Margaret Steele said to have immigrated from Ireland in 1717, lived in Massachusetts. Their descendants were in NY, MI, IA, TX, ID and elsewhere. [Relationship between this family and the Pennsylvania immigrants is not known at this time - tmc]

The HENRY line is that of the famous Patrick HENRY. Sarah Drucilla PICKENS HENRY (b.1779) was the daughter of Captain John PICKENS, Jr. (b.1737-40) and Sarah SWEARENGIN. Sarah Drucilla PICKENS (b.1779, d.Dec. 24, 1863) married William HENRY (b. June 30, 1777, d.1856) and lived together in Summerville, Georgia.

Traces the line of Gen. Andrew PICKENS, with a few lines about his ancestors. No dates, but gives a good rehash of Andrew PICKENS Obit and his descendants.

A history of John (b. May 27, 1751 in Ireland) and Letitia HANNAH PICKENS and their descendants. John is believed to be the son of John and Eleanor PICKENS from Bucks County, Pennsylvania and Washington County, Virginia who later migrated to South Carolina. This claim is based on information from Chalkleys RECORDS OF AUGUSTA COUNTY, VIRGINIA. John's family settled in Blount County, Tennessee (from about 1792) after living for some time in Virginia (from 1784 or before until 1792).

Made up almost entirely of family group sheets of descendants of John Sidney PICKENS of Alabama and Louisiana. John Sidney PICKENS (b.Dec. 1, 1818) is believed to be the son of William PICKENS (b.1780), the 6th child of Israel (b. Aug. 24, 1744) and Elizabeth BASKIN PICKENS. Israel PICKENS was the son of John PICKENS (from Ireland, birthdate unknown, died about 1770) and the grandson of William PICKENS (from Ireland, birthdate unknown, died about 1749, wife Margaret) Much of the early lineage data in the book may have come from Rev. Sharp who is acknowledged at the front of the book.

Follows descendants of the Pennsylvania immigrants to Virginia, Maryland?, the Carolinas and throughout the Southern states. Considered by many to be the most comprehensive work to date on the southern branches of the extended PICKENS families, this work is a very good starting point for researchers. Now known to have some errors, but an excellent reference. Many of the errors and omissions have been noted, corrected, and documented in the PICKENS Family National Database.

An account of descent from William PICKENS, the first of our American Ancestors, through two of his sons, Andrew PICKENS and John PICKENS by the marriage of Capt. Joseph PICKENS to his first cousin, Eleanor PICKENS. Much of the information contained in this work appears in Rev. Sharp's later work, PICKENS FAMILIES OF THE SOUTH (author, Memphis TN, 1963). However there are some few details in here that are not in the later work.

** This work is currently being updated by James Murphy of Henderson TN, under arrangement with the copyright holder, Mrs. Alma Sharp. The update includes additional information from various sources, including many of the PICKENS researchers affiliated with this site.The update, and that of the companion work on the DOWDLE family, is scheduled for release in early fall of 1998. The update will follow and expand ONLY the branches followed in the original work, and is not meant to be as comprehensive as the broader PICKENS family outlined in PICKENS FAMILIES OF THE SOUTH, or the PICKENS FAMILY DATABASE currently being compiled. Professionally researched, the book includes some general historical information on the PICKENS surname, as well as a summary about the early immigrants to Pennsylvania. Mr. PICKENS' ancestry outlined. Well done and highly readable. Includes PICKENS, CROSS, CALHOUN, BOONE, BOHUN and MOLONSON families. If your Pickens lines ties into the early South Carolina families, this may be a good choice.
