Dear Teddy,
I am sending you a sample copy of my recent work on Dilleys. You may be unaware that a book was published in MO by George E. Dille called "The Dille Family", being the genealogy of David Dille, Sr., b. 1718, who with 8 living sons produced the largest Dille clan in USA. The book is out of print.
The John in the sample I am sending you was a son of David Sr. David b. 1790 m. Mary Jamison in Ohio before going to MO about 1837.
FAMILY OF JOHN AND MARTHA (LISH) DILLE
(Son of David Sr.)
John Dille was born about 1748 in Woodbridge, N. J. and died in 1839. He married Martha Lish in N. J. in 1768, and he may have been one of the few sons of David Sr. who was married before the migration to Washington Co., PA about 1776. He was a ranger in western PA during the Revolutionary War. He paid taxes in Wash. Co. from 1781 to 1790, and he appears to have been the first of David's sons to move across the Ohio River to Belmont Co., Ohio in 1791. A traveler on the Ohio River spotted his place at the sharp bend in the river in the early 1800s, where he apparently operated a supply store for river boats. In the Federal Census for 1810 for Belmont Co., Ohio, a John Dilly and wife were both 26 to 45 years of age with 3 sons 10 to 16 and I dau 10 to 16 yrs old. Thip could not have been John Sr. who would have been over 60 years of age in 1810. David was probably his youngest son b in 1790. Only Phoebe was probably a daughter of John. The older girls (,Mary, Rebecca and Martha) were already married before 1810 as marriage records show. Based on these data, the order of birth has been changed from that shown in the Dille Book, and men born after 1810 were removed from his family list. The other Dille brothers listed for John are probably sons of David in the following generation. It is possible that some were sons of Amos who has not been found in census records.
1. Mary m Thomas Haywood I Oct 1802 in Belmont Co. (Polly Dilley Bodley?)
2. Rebecca m Asa Griffith and they went to Montgomery Co., Ohio.
3. Martha m Jacob Fisher 11 Dec 1803 in Belmont Co.
4. Phoebe m 6 Dec 1808, Daniel Hartley
5. David b 1790 in PA d 1849 at Gilliam, MO; m Mary Jamison b 1789 d 1865. They lived in Meade twp., Belmont Co. for the 1820 census; They moved to Saline Co., MO about 1837; both are buried at Gilliam, MO.

9. Amos went to Grundy Co., MO No census record found.
10. Sarah J. b 1832c
Notes: Of John's descendants, the Dille book provides information only on David Dille, probably the youngest son of John Sr., and Nehemiah. Six other children are listed in the Dille book by name only, but the three males--William, Squire, and Amos appear to be sons of David, certainly, not sons of John Sr. They were born beginning in 1812 which is about the time that David became an adult and married Mary Jamison. David and his nine sons moved to Saline and Grundy Co., MO, probably about the time MO was opened to settlement in 1837. Most of these sons of David stayed in MO for life. George E. Dille, author of the Dille book, apparently visited these families personally, and collected much information on two lines of David's descendants. I have not found the source of the 1810 census record in Belmont Co., OH for a John. I have not found him in any census in Washington Co., PA or in Belmont Co., OH. JDA
