EPHRAIM DILLEY SR., BORN 1755 IN HUNTERDON CO., NEW JERSEY
Ephraim Dilley Sr. was born 6 Nov 1755 in Hunterdon Co., N. J.,
and died at Senecaville, Ohio, (Guernsey Co.) 26 July 1844. He
married about 1780 Lucy Uiss Ayers, born in Sussex Co., N. J.
in 1763. Lucy died 15 March 1840 and she too, along with Ephraim
and many of their descendants, is buried near the SE corner of
the Senecaville cemetery one-half mile from the old Ephraim Dilley
homestead where his son Robert Dilley lived in later years.
In a letter to Minnie Carpenter, Mrs. Lura Thompson of Lore City, IA wrote: "We live on a farm where Ephraim Dilley Sr. lived and the house in which he died stood in the corner of our yard. It is situated about a mile north of Senecaville and about half a mile away is the beautiful cemetery where he and so many of his descendants are buried. The graves are very well kept and those of Ephraim Sr. and Abraham are decorated with flags in memory of their service to their country. Ephraim served in the Revolution and was present at the battles of Stony Point and Trenton. With his children he settled near Senecaville, Guernsey Co., OH about 1814 Lucy Ayres Dilley was a daughter of Dr. Ayres of New York. Her brother was a patent medicine doctor. (Note by JDA--I have omitted Ephraim Dilley Jr's name in the burial list because he was buried in Northfield, MN; also, I substituted 1814 for the date of arrival at Senecaville).
Ephraim Sr. served in the Revolutionary War and was reputed to have been present at the battles of Stony Point and Trenton but his pension record does not support that claim. He enlisted in October 1776 and served one month as a private in Capt. Jacob Stull's company, Second Regiment of Militia. He served one month as private in Capt Matthias Beckwith's company in the fall of 1778, and three terms of two weeks each as a private in Capt. Christian Longstreet's company on the frontiers over the Blue Mountains. Although Ephraim's regiment served at Valley Forge during the famous winter of 1777-78, Ephraim was not in service at that time. Archive records of his claim for a pension were examined by V. W. O'Hara in the 1950s and by Gerald and Ruth Dilley in 1985. He may have supplied wood for the iron forges near Trenton because he lived nearby.
Ephraim and Lucy had six sons and two daughters, all but the younqest two sons were born in New Jersey. All eight children lived to maturity. The gaps between birth years hint that other children may have died during infancy and been buried in New Jersey. On 8 May 1870, Robert Dilley wrote a letter to his brother Ephraim Jr. listing the ages that his brothers and sisters would have been in 1670. He also listed the birth and marriage dates of Ephraim's children. Four of the children lived to be-over 70 years of age and Abraham was 90 when he died. This record of family robustness and longevity is remarkable for children born in the 18th century when medical treatment was primitive.
Ephraim Dilley Sr. and his family moved to Fayette Co., Pa. in 1799 where Ephraim Jr. was born in 1799 and Samuel in 1802. In 1814 he moved to Guernsey Co., Ohio, where he lived on a farm one mile north of Senecaville. Ephraim and Lucy were founding members of the Senecaville Presbyterian Church. The two oldest boys were reaching maturity at the time of the move to Guernsey Co. Ephraim Jr. married in 1821 and apparently lived on or near the home place of Ephraim Sr. who died in 1844 at age 89. All of Ephraim Jrs' 12 children were born at Senecaville before he moved to Minnesota.
Ephraim Dilley Jr. moved with his family to Hazelwood, Rice Co., Minn. in 1856 at age 56. This is eight miles from Northfield where he died in 1882 at his son Georges's home, and both he and his wife Rachel Henry are buried at Northfield.
3.
Four of Ephraim Jr.'s sons enlisted for the Civil War. Robert spent his time in a hospital in Indiana; Samuel was in the cavalry and fought Indians in Minn. as did Ephraim Valentine Rose Dilley; James Frances, the youngest son, fought with General Grant at St. Louis and Vicksburg, and afterwards was with Sherman, on his march to the sea.
James F. Dilley entered the Civil War as a private in the 4th Minn. Volunteers and came out a Lieutenant. During the War, he visited the home of his uncle Samuel Dilley near Phoenix in Yazoo Co., Miss, but Samuel was in refuge in Madison Co., Miss. The Mississippi incident was written to Minnie Carpenter of Utah, historian of the clan, by Thomas Abraham Dilley of Phoenix, her uncle. Samuel Dilley moved to Mississippi about 1825 where he married twice and became a Southerner with sons in the Confederate Army.
There are statements in some family records that Hannah Perry was the wife of Aaron Dilley b 1721 in New Jersey. Robert Dilley b 1793 was probably right in his letter to Ephraim Jr. in 1870 when he stated that Hannah Perry married Abram Ayres whose daughter Lucy married Ephraim Sr. The Ayres were a New York family originally, but they may have lived in New Jersey later where many by that name lived. When Robert calculated the ages of his brothers and sisters in 1870, all but Joseph and Hannah were still alive. It was a family of unusual longevity and large families with 6, 8, 10, 10, 11, and 13 children in that second generation most of whom survived into adulthood.
Minnie Carpenter collected family records from many sources in the 1920s including the following: Alice R. Sayre, a daughter of Harriett Dilley and John Sayre of Northfield, Minn.; Mrs. Susan A. Wood of Northfield and Mary L. Dilley of St. Paul, Minn.. several others provided records for individual families. Minnie sent a compilation of Ephraim clan families to Thomas Ray Dilley of Morgantown, W. Virginia, but deposited a different account in the Salt Lake City Mormon records. Both have been used in this compilation.

2-1 FAMILY OF JOSEPH S. DILLEY B 1782, SON OF EPHRAIM SR.
by Jay D. Andrews
Joseph Dilley Aas born ca 1782, ih Sussex Co., NJ, a son of Ephraim
Sr. and Lucy Ayers. His wife was Sarah (Buckley) Dilley b 1787,
d 14 Feb 1834. He moved with his father and three brothers and
two sisters to Fayette Co., PA in early 1799 where Ephraim Jr.
and Samuel were born in 1799 and 1802. Ephraim Sr. remained in
Fayette Co. until 1814, when he moved to Guernsey Co., OH, and
settled at Senecaville, in Richland Twp. Joseph was married to
Sarah Buckley in Fayette Co., and they appeared in the 1810 census;
Ephraim had 3 sons <1 <10, and 2 10-16), and 1 daughter
(Anna) over 16 yrs of age. Therefore, Abraham, Hannah, and Robert
were already out of the nest and married, but did not appear in
the 1810 census for Fayette Co. It is possible that they had moved
west to Guernsey Co. earlier than Ephraim Sr. with families into
which they had married; all but William and Anna were married
before 1810, probably in Fayette Co., PA. A second earlier wife
of Joseph was found in DAR applications; Cynthiana Rose was the
mother of Joseph's first 3 children born before 1810, if she was
his wife.
Ephraim Sr. and Lucy were already over 45 years of age in 1810, and in the 1820 census they had two boys 16-26. By 1830, Ephraim was over 70 years of age, but the females are confused (1 5-10 & 1 80-90) because Lucy was about 8 years younger than Ephraim Sr. He was not found in the 1840 census although he died in 1844, and Lucy in 1840. Both are buried in the Senecaville cemetery, half a mile south of their farm. Their sandstone gravestones are eroded, but a new stone with dates has been erected--possibly by Bernice Scott Hoge, a daughter of Dr. Winfield Scott who married Candace Hill. She was a daughter of Dr. Noah Hill and Mary Dilley (Abrahams daughter). Dr. Scott practiced medicine at Senecaville for 30 years, and Noah Hill 50 years. I have a letter from Bernice Scott in 1947, describing these relationships. She and her brother visited the graveyard every 2 or 3 years from their home in Philadelphia.
Joseph Dilley died 4 May 1833 and Sarah Buckley on the 14 Feb 1834; both are buried at Senecaville Cemetery. They left a large family of 9 sons and 4 daughters, several of the daughters were mature or nearly of age, but there were young children left without parents. Arrangement of Joseph's family by age of birth is based on the will of Ephraim Monterville Dilley, the oldest son. who left 1/3 of his estate to his wife, and 2/3 to his siblings. The 7 youngest children appeared in court and chose Abraham Dilley as their guardian; their ages appeared in the court records. These data were found in the court records by Lisa Fair. There is no evidence that any of Joseph's children actually lived with Abraham, but legally he was their guardian.
The children of Joseph and Cynthiana Rose (1) were: (first
wife from record by Daisy Jeanette (Dilley) Lowry).

Buried at Sen.ecaville. Buckley appeared in the 1840 census with
I male 5
yrs. but no wife found. In 1850, he had 4 children ages 1 to 11,
all males. He was a bricklayer.
In 1860, he had 6 children ages 2-21, all males except Sarah Frances
age 4 years. In 1870, listed as Erasmus, he was 57 and 5 children
ages 4 to 19 were listed. There were 4 bricklayers in
the family, and one daughter Sarah age 14.

3-6 Valentine Joseph Dilley b 25 May 1814, d 25 Aug 1885 (tombstone). He m 13 Jan 1835, Amanda S. Hutchison b 1817, d 8 Apr 1905 (tombstone) both at Senecaville. In the 1850 census, Valentine had 3 children age 1-9, James, Richard and Mary A. His son James L. b 1841 was a Civil War soldier who lost a leg 3 days before Lee's surrender; he became a jeweler with a large family and a prominent public life. He spent 9 years in Muskingum Co., OH.
3-7 Abraham Dilley b 9 Oct 1815, d 9 Jun 1876, m 2 Oct 1838 in Guernsey Co. Isabel Shaw b in MD. He did not appear in the 1840 census, but in 1850 he was in Washington Co., OH (Aurelius Twp) as a farmer with 4 children: Clinton 11, Sarah Jane 9, Tobias 6, & Valentine 3. In 1870 Abraham and Isabel appeared in the census for Muskingum Co., OH, both age 54 and a dau Isabel A. age 16. He d age 60 in 1876, leaving a will dated 2 Jun 1876 giving son Tobias 37 acres of land and leaving two daughters Sarah J. Perkins and Isabella R. and his wife Isabella C. See copy of will.
3-8 James R. Dilley b 15 Jun 1817; m 8 Dec 1840 Eliza Timberlake.
3-9 Mary Ann Dilley b 14 May 1818; m 27 Apr 1836 John Sills, Guernsey Co.
3-10 Robert P. Dilley b 19 Jun 1821; m 16 Dec 1841 Nancy Collins b in VA ca 1622. They appeared in the 1850 and 1860 censuses for Wash. Co. PA, both ages 28 and 38 resepectively in successive censuses, with 6 children ages 1-13; he was a farmer.
3-11 John B. Dilley Sr., b 19Jun 1822, d 9 Feb 1875 age 50 year; m Mary Jannie Whalino b 23 Feb 1825; she m (2) 15 Sep 1847, James Frame; he was a merchant at Senecaville (two John B's probably confused! (Sandra has a John dying Oct 1844 age 22 by tombstone in Senecaville cemetery with reference).
3-12 Sarah Jane b 19 Jul 1824; bur. at Senecaville (d 1852?); m 30 Sep 1847 John Wallace.
3-13 Brazilla (or Balzer) b 31 May 1818, m Elizabeth Jane Monahan. They appeared in the 1850 census for Wash. Co., OH, (Liberty Twp), with two children; John 12 & William 9. He was a blacksmith in 1850. (The 1828 birth year for Brazilla must be wrong; I have 1818 but that conflicts with Mary Ann's birth).
Note: This is a mixture of data from Sandra William's and Minnie Carpenter's records. Both Sandra and I had most of the early censuses. This is a sample of the changes that will occur throughout the Ephraim clan when all our records are combined in this version of Joseph's children, the order used is found in Ephraim M. Dilley's will, and the court proceedings for guardianship by Abraham Sr. for the four youngest children, as reported by Lisa Fair. This allows the gap in Joseph's family between Lucy and Bulkley's birth dates to be filled. Elizabeth may yet be the oldest child of Joseph if the gravestone date of 1806 is valid for her birth. I have chosen Lucy as the probable daughter of Joseph before 1810 in Fayette Co., PA, and in the 1810 census (2 males & 1 female <10 yrs).

On his way to Virginia, Sam contracted Pneumonia and died on 11 Sep 1861. They were sent to Virginia and arrived there the day after the battle of Bull Run. Sam wasn't in a battle. Brothers Joe and Robert were both wounded in the Battle of Seven Pines near Richmond. This wound left brother Joe a cripple for the rest of his life, although he recovered suff iciently to ride horseback and served the remainer of the War as an independent scout for generals Adams and Ross. Brother Robert recovered from his wound and was with his Army in all the battles until 1863. He took sick and was sent to the hospital at Lynchburg, VA, and died on 23 Apr 1863.
