STORIES OF GUERNSEY COUNTY by William G. Wolfe

Ever since its very beginning the Senecaville community has carried the name of Dilley amongst its family names. For a long time the Dilleys were numerous, both there and elsewhere in the county, but there are only a few of them any more. Their connections under other names, however, are still many.

For our start on the Dilley family, we drop back two centuries and find Aaron Dilley and his wife, Hannah, living on a farm in New Jersey. The French and Indian War came on and Aaron enlisted. He returned home safely. We know little about the family of Aaron and Hannah, other than that they had at least three sons, one of whom was Samuel and another Ephraim, born in 1755.

When the Revolutionary War opened, Aaron again shouldered his musket and went out to fight, and with him this time went Ephraim. Hannah tried to carry the farm work as did many wives and mothers while their husbands and sons were fighting for freedom. On Jun 28, 1778, she was plowing in the field. Borne to her ears from a distance were sounds of guns. The Battle of Monmouth was being fought, and her husband and son were in it. She plowed on all day, to distressed to eat her dinner.

Ephraim had spent the preceding winter with Washington at Valley Forge. On a monument there, marking the spot where his regiment was quartered, his name is inscribed. He crossed the Delaware with Washington the night of the Battle of Trenton, and in 1779 he was with Wayne at the capture of Stony Point. (Not true!--JDA)

The war ended in 1781, and Ephraim came home and married Lucy U. Ayer who was 18 years old. It is said that she was connected with the Ayer family of patent medicine fame. Half century and more ago Ayerís Almanac was considered a household necessity, supplying as it did, much astronomical data and various statistics, besides proclaiming the virtues of ìAyerís Cherry Pectoraî and ìAyerís Hair Vigorî. The children of Ephraim and Lucy Dilley were Joseph (1782), Abraham (1785), Hannah (1787), Anna (1789), Robert (1793), William (1796), Ephraim Jr. (1799) and Samuel (1802).

The Military lands of the Northwest Territory were opened and farms were given free to Revolutionary soldiers who had not received all their pay for service in the war. It may have been the allurement of a free farm that brought Ephraim, Lucy and the children to Ohio. They settled on land a short distance north of what is now Senecaville. When the sons grew older and purchased farms of their own there came to be a little settlement of Dilleys there. Accordingly to our list of real estate owners in 1840 (page 974 of the book), Ephraim Sr owned 80 acres; Robert 160; William 60; Ephraim Jr 100. Abraham and Robert owned lots in Senecaville. Ephraim, the old Revolutionary patriot, died in 1844 at the age of 89 and was buried in the Senecaville cemetery. (Note: Ephraim spent about 14 years in Fayette Co, PA where Joseph, Abraham and Hannah married but only Joseph appeared in the 1810 census. He moved to Senecaville in 1814--JDA).

Joseph, the oldest son of Ephraim and Lucy Dilley, married Sarah Buckley and settled on a farm near that of his parents. As he died in 1833, his name does not appear in the list of Dilley farm owners above. Two os his descendants bearing the Dilley name are living in Cambridge today--Ephraim M. a grandson, and Samuel M. a great-grandson. Another great-grandson was Otho E. Dilley, the well-known musician whose stage name was "Herbert Dillea."

25.

He was directing the orchestra in the Chicago Iroquois theater at the time of the great fire in December, 1903, in which nearly 600 persons perished and a nervous breakdown followed from which he did not recover.

There seems to be a strain of music running through the Joseph Dilley family. James L. Dilley, a grandson, served the entire length of the Civil War as a member of an army band. James V. Dilley, a great-grandson, and a skillful cornet player organized the present Cambridge band in 1898, and he was its leader for several years. Charles Morrison, composer of the popular piano selection ìMeditationî was also a great-grandson of Joseph Dille.

Abraham, the second son, married Jane W. McCleary an Irish girl, in 1808. Four years later the War of 1812 opened and he enlisted in Capt. Simon Beyerís company.

Robert, the third son, married Hannah McDonald and located on a quarter section of land near the farms of his father and brothers. Clara Dilley, granddaughter of Robert, is the only person bearing the original Dilley name, who is living in Senecaville today. William, the fourth son, married Elizabeth Lowrey and settled immediately north of the others. In the early days of the National Road, he teamed between Zanesville and Wheeling. Ephraim Jr. married Rachel Henry. Although but a mere youth, he served in the War of 1812, it is said. About the year 1857, he and his brother William moved their families to Minnesota. Samuel, the youngest of the six sons of Ephraim and Lucy Dilley, left the Senecaville community when he was 25 years old, going to Mississippi, where he engaged in the nursery business and preached some. During the Civil War, four of his sons were with the Confederate Army.

In the early days there were no schools in Senecaville community (p 426 of the book). William and Robert Thompson engaged a teacher from Philadelphia to teach their own children and invited all the parents to send their children to the school which would be free. The several Dilley families accepted the invitation, but insisted that they bear a part of the expenses. This is said to have been the first free school in Guernsey county.

The pioneer Dilleys were Presbyterians and it was largely through their influence that the church of that denomination was established at Senecaville. In politics the most of the descendants of Ephraim and Lucy Dilley have been and are Republicans.

NOTES BY JAY D. ANDREWS

Research by Win O'Hara and Ruth & Jerry Dilley at the National Archives does not support most of these traditions about Ephraimís role in the Revolutionary War. His enlistment dates indicate that he was not in service when these battles took place.

In this article, it is not realized that Ephraim spent some 14 years (1800to 1814) in Fayette Co, PA as shown by his pension records, and census records. It may be that some of his sons moved to Guernsey Co, earlier than 1814 but it is doubtful. It is apparent that Minnie Carpenter, the early researcher of Ephraimís descendants and grand-daughter of Samuel DIlley, got some of her biographical data from this account in Wolfeís history.

Clara Dilley was a dau of Robert Dilley and she lived from 1866 to 1947 and is buried at Senecaville. Probably she was the source for much of this article by Wolfe.

BIOGRAPHY OF JAMES L. DILLEY SON OF VALENTINE JOSEPH
(From History of Guernsey Co., OH, 1911 by Col. Cyrus B. Sarchet, Vol 1)

Among the native-born residents of the vicinity of Senecaville, Richland township, Guernsey Co., who have reached a well merited success there must be included the name of James L.Dilley, for, having applied himself in a most assiduous manner to whatever he undertook, he has been largely rewarded. No man is better known in this section of the county than he, and his career has a double interest when it is learned that he is one of the honored veterans of the great civil conflict of nearly a half century ago, having gone forth, like the patriotic Spartan of old, to do or die for his country on many a sanguinary field of combat.

James L. Dilley was born March 24, 1841, in Cambridqe, Ohio, the son of Valentine J. and Amanda W. (Hutchison) Dilley. The father was born in Richland township and the grandfather Joseph Dilley, came to Guernsey County from New Jersey with the early pioneers. Both grandfather and father were farmers. The father was also a shoemaker and conducted a shop at Cambridge for a number of years and in 1845 moved to Senecaville, where he conducted a shop for some years, but later engaged in farming in different parts of the county and eventually returned to Senecaville, where he died in June 1886, and his widow on April 8. 1906. He was a Republican in politics and active in public affairs, but not an office seeker, thouoh he served as a member of the first town council of Senecavillc, and also as assessor of Richland township. He was a man of sterling character and integrity. The parents had a family of twelve children: James L., the subject of this sketch; Richard H. of Cambridge; Susan, deceased; Joseph, of Duncans Falls, Muskinqum county, OH; Mary Ann, deceased; Caroline E. now Mrs. John W. James of Maxburg Washington Co., OH; Minerva U. now Mrs. Richard Lowry, of Senecaville; Harriet, deceased; Amanda, now Mrs. James Nelson of Senecaville; William, deceased; Ephraim, deceased; Sarah Frances, deceased.

James L.Dilley, who was the third in order of birth, grew up in Senecaville and obtained his education in the public schools. In 1858, the family moved to Cumberland, Guernsey County, and from there to Maxburg, Washington County. There, on October 26, 1861, he enlisted in Company G, Sixty-second Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry, for three years' service in the Army of the Potomac, during the Civil War. He served three years and on January 1, 1864, he re-enlisted in the same company and regiment for another three years, or during the war. He served until the close of the war, and was mustered out on July 15, 1865, serving almost continuously for four years. His regiment was mostly with the Army of the Potomac and he participated in twenty-six battles, the Sixty-second Regiment being always on duty and on the firing line. On April 6, 1865, just three days before General Lee's surrender, Mr. Dilley was wounded in the right thigh in the battle of High Bridge, Virginia, having passed through without any serious injury up to that time. His limb was amputated and was so injured that an artificial limb was impossible. He had a splendid record.

After the close of the war, Mr. Dilley returned home. His parents were living in Maxburg, Washington county, Ohio, where he engaged in the mercantile business with his brother Richard H. Dilley. He was in business there for about four years. He was married September 4, 1868 to Clara A. Miller, daughter of Samuel and Charlotte N. (Goodwell) Miller of Maxburg, Ohio. To this union were born the following children: Sarah Francis, deceased; Joseph, deceased; William, of CaldAell, Ohio; and Lillie, deceased; Samuel of Senecaville, Inez, deceased; James A., of Senecaville; Helen, deceased; Mildred, at home.

27.

After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Dilley lived in Maxburg for about one year, when they removed to Duncan's Falls, Muskingum County. where he was engaged in the jewelry business for nine years. In 1880, he moved to Senecaville and engaged in the jewelry business until 1908 when he retired from active business.

Mr. Dilley is a Republican in politics and always has been an active party man. He has served as assessor of Aurelius township, in Washington, for two years. He has served as a member of the town council of Senecaville for twenty years, and is now president of the same. He has served as a member of the
Republican county central committee for years and has been a delegate to county, district and state conventions.
He is now a member of the Guernsey county soldiers' relief board. He is a member of the Buchanan Post NO.
541, Grand Army of the Republ ic, and has been commander of the post and is now adjutant. He has been a
delegate to the state encampment and is active in all work of the Grand Army of the Republic. His wife is a
member of the Presbyterian church and Mr. Dilley is an adherent of that church and a libreal supporter. He is a
man of high standing and a splendid citizen in every respect.
