Abraham Dilley had 9 daughters and only one son; they all married and became ancestors of many people with different family names. I have imagined Ephraim attending church in Senecaville in the 1840s at late 80s age with a church full of relatives--he had over 60 grandchildren by that time and most families had not started moving away from Senecaville yet. Abraham married Jane in 1808 but it is not clear whether he was living in Fayette Co. where his father and brother Joseph appeared in the 1810 census. Hannah married in 1809 and the rest of the family appeared with Ephraim Sr. in the census. Abraham may have moved west with his wife's people as early as 1808 which is later than the 1805 given for Ephraim Sr's move in some accounts.
Abraham became the guardian for some of Joseph's children when the latter and his wife died about 1834. 1 had assumed that Abraham had his blacksmith shop in Senecaville where he paid taxes on a lot, but Ephraim's farm was only one mile north of the villaae; maybe Abraham lived on a farm just west of the village with his shop. If he operated a supply store, surely he was living in Senecavil'te which has not changed much in size over a hundred years. Abraham and Robert stayed near Senecaville all the rest of their lives. Abraham was listed as a farmer both in 1850 and 1660 censuses. Robert was listed as a blacksmith in 1850. Abraham had young children in his home for each census, who were possibly grandchildren. Robert had a larger tax assessment in each census, but Abraham may have been the most respected of Ephraim's children, and the stories of his wife Jane imply quality of life. The story about Abraham driving a team to Baltimore for supplies may be stretched a bit. William Dilley was also described as a teamster hauling from Janesville to Wheeling which is a more reasonable trip. Unfortunately, there is no way to confirm these stories, and they do satisfy descendants with no harm done.

ELijah L.Dilley, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Dilley, was born in Guernsey Co., OH, Oct 18, 1834; and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Frank Horn, near Spencerville, in Allen Co. on Dec 18, 1913, aged 89 years, 2 months and 3 days. Mr. Dilley's youth and early manhood were spent in his native state. In 1855, he left Ohio and came to this state, locating in DeKalb Co., a mile north of Spencerville, where he successfully engaged in farming during all the active years of his life. Having acquired a competence, he left the farm and for a time became a resident of St. Joe. In 1845, the deceased was married to Elizabeth Griffith. To them were born nine children, but three of whom, Mrs. Mary Jenkins, Mrs. Margaret Cummings, and Mrs. Ella Horn, survive their father. Death entered the home in June 1872, leaving him bereft of the wife of his youth. In 1878, he was married to Mrs. Susan Ayres, who by also some years preceded him in death leaving him a second time a widower. In his early manhood he became a Christian (copy unreadable in second column).
The funeral was from the late home of the deceased at 1 p.m. on Thursday Dec. 18. To Rev. D. P. Heltzel fell the sad yet pleasing task of pronouncing the last eulogium over the remains of Mr. Dilley,. And because a man of real worth had been removed from among us; pleasing, because he could commend to his hearers one whose life work had borne full fruition of good. Interment was at Spenserville Cemetery.
Vincent F. Dilley was a son of Elijah L. Dilley of DeKalb Co., IN, who volunteered for Civil War service as a substitute for his father. After about a year of being transferred around to army camps, he was discharged as under age for service. There are many military records on Vincent that have been collected by someone. Vincent died a tragic death by his horse and buggy being hit by a train at St. Joe, IN. He was a grandson of William Dilley Jr. b 1830 of the Ephraim clan.
Vincent was born 5 May 1843 and died 7 Feb 1908 at St. Joe, IN. He is buried in White Cemetery, Spencervilie, IN. He married Sarah Ann Maurer born I April 1849. They were married 6 Jun 1869. Death at any time is an unwelcome messenger, but when it comes
to one just in the prime of young manhood, it is indeed sad to
comtemplate. Two years ago, George Dilley had bright prospects
for the future as any one, and looked forward to a long life of
joy and happiness. In fact, he had his plans all made for the
future, but alas! "man proposes but God disposes.' His health
began to fail at that time, and gradually grew worse until his
decease which occurred Sunday morning at eleven o'clock. While
it was known that he could not possibly live long, yet he died
rather suddenly. He was taken with a severe pain Sunday morning,
and seemed to realize that the end was near. He called for his
friends to bid them all a last farewell, asking them to meet him
in that beyond world. His faith was strong in the Saviour, and
he seemed willing and anxious to go. Several times during the
morning, he said:,Oh, I am tired, I wish the Lord would take me
home to rest. He died without struggle, just peacefully, and calmy
sank away into rest.
He was a great sufferer, but bore his affliction with patience and submission. His decease was such that he could not be down, and through all his latter sickness, the only way he could rest was by sitting in a chair and resting his head on some pillows. Just before he died, he asked his father to hold him on his lap in order to rest him. His father willingly complied with the request, and while resting in the arms of his earthly fathers his spirit passed away into his heavenly Father's home. His age was 25 years, 8 months, and 23 days. George was an exemplary young man, kind, affectionate, and loved by all who knew him. His character was above reproach; he loved the good, and the beautiful. He is dead; his works do follow him, and his memory will long be cherished by those who knew him best. The funeral services were held at Spencerville, on Tuesday, conducted by S. P. Fryberger, pastor of the Lutheran Church, of which he is a member. The large concourse of people in attendance at the funeral, was evidence of the universal sorrow of the untimely death of one so beloved, as our fri'end, George W. Dilley.

I, Ben Dilley was born September 10, 1870 at the Dilley home on the bank of the Muskingum River. My father Tobias Azores Dilley was born March 19, 1844 at Senecavifle, Ohio, and my mother Harriett Ann Gander was born September 1845 on what was known as Gander Ridge, now called Poverty Ridge.
Father and Mother were married December 2, 1869 and had six children. Myself born September 10, 1870. Florence A., born March 16, 1872. Estelle, born July 13, 1875. Abraham "Abe". born September 12, 1876. Mary Adelaide, born November 13, 1878, and Blanche Garfield. born November 18, 1880.
When Father and Mother were first married they lived with Father's parents [Abraham and Isabell Dilley], and there was where Florence and I were born. After Florence was born, Grandfather and Father built the house up on the second flat in 1874 and that was where Estelle and Abe were born. After Grandfather's death in 1876. a cousin of my father's, William Seward Dilley1, lived with Grandmother and Aunt Belle until 1878. He married Jennie Musselman of near Zanesville, Ohio and they moved to Iowa. After he moved away, Father and Mother moved back to take care of Grandmother, as Aunt Belle had married Jonas Bailey2 and was leasing. The farm was left to Father and he was to take care of Grandmother and pay his two sisters their share in money.
Grandfather Abraham Dilley was born in Sussex County3, New Jersey Auoust 1815. Do not know when they moved to Senecaville, Ohio.4 His father was Joseph Dilley son of Ephraim Dilley. It was said the original Dilleys came from France. Grandmother Isabel C. Dilley was born February 25, 18155, was the daughter of George Shaw, and was born near Hagerstown, Maryland. Her father was a teamster and hauled goods from Baltimore to Pittsburgh. They must of moved to Senecaville, Ohio when Grandmother was 15 or 16 years old. My father [Tobias] had a brother Clinton who was wounded in the Civil War at Shiloh or Pittsburgh Landing6 and died shortly after.7 Another [brother] Valentine who died when he was about seven years old. Two sisters Aunt Sarah Jane Perkins, two years older than Father and Aunt Belle Ruth Bailey ten years younger than Father.

' have not identified, which family this cousin belongs to yet,
most likely one of Abraham's brothers
2 this is confusing, because in Abraham's Will he refers to his
daughter Isabelle Bailey so she was married before her father's
death in 1876
3 Abraham Dilley was actually born 9 October 1815 in Guernsey
County, Ohio, according to his death certificate.
4 According to Ephraim Dilleys Revolutionary War Pension Application,
the Dilleys moved to Guernsey County in 1814, they had moved from
New Jersey about 1800 to Fayette County, Pennsylvania, where they
stayed until 1814.
5 her death certificate indicates she was born 26 January 1814
in Hagerstown, Maryland
6 this refers to the same battle, one is the location of the battle,
the other is the common name of the battle 7 Clinton Dilley was
a Private in the 97th Ohio Company B Regiment, died 4 May 1862
and is buried at Camp Dennison, Ohio, all noted in the Roll
of honor = 9. Names of soldiers who died in Defense of the American
Union, Washington, Govt Printing Office: 1866.
The Dilley Family, continued

My mother's father was Isaac Smith Gander, son of George and Elizabeth Gander. George and two brothers, David and John, came to Ohio and settled on, John back of Philo. The Bartons and Sullivans of Philo were his descendants. David settled near Cumberland, Ohio. His sons were Wash, David Jr., and Jonathon. John of near Coal Hill is a grandson. Isaac married Mary Price daughter of James and Kitty Magahey Price, both of Irish decent. Jimmie Price was an overseer of slave farm hands in Virginia. Grandfather [Isaac Gander] was bom December 8, 1818.
My interest in the Dilley family began when I read this
story, told by Ben to nzy grandmother Fleeta (McCotiaha)
Dilley. I was further intrigued when my grandmother said that
the family in the book by George Earl Dille, The Dille
Family : 300 Years in America, was not our family.
After several years of research, I have yet to see why she said
this. All evidence indicates "our family " is indeed
a part of "their family " I do, however, thank her for
her skepticism, because it drives me to thoroughly research
and document as much information as possible, in an effort to
strengthen the purported "weak link" to the rest
of the Dilley family. --LSF July, 1994

Abraham Dilley and his family moved to Muskingum County Ohio in Jun 1865. He purchased a farm, in Blue Rock Township, of approximately 237 acres, from Levi and Ann Claypoole. The tranaction is recorded in the Muskingum County Courthouse in Zanesvillie, Ohio: Record of Deeds Vol. 44, page 332.
The land passed to Abraham's son Tobias A. Dilley when Abraham died in 1876. (Muskingum County Probate Court Case #8877)
Tobias A. Dilley died intestate on 18 Apr 1921. The farm was divided equally among his 6 children.. (Muskingum County Deed Record 192 page 372) The property was gradually divided into two parcels. Ben Dilley (Tobias Dilley's son) eventually owned one half and other heirs owned small percentages of the other half. Eventually, Marion Dilley and family lived on the Ben Dilley half and Paul Dilley and family lived on the other half (both Ben's sons). Paul and Fleeta Dilley purchased 97 acres of the original Abraham Dilley farm from the Tobias Dilley heirs in 1955.
Paul Dilley died in 1973. The farm went to Paul's two childrern Pauline and Melvin. Clem and Pauline (Dilley) Pyles bought Melvin Dilley's share, transaction complete 1977.

I believe Joseph and Sarah Dilley had a total of 13 children. The children listed in the court record above are only the 7 youngest The basis for this theory is the will of Ephraim Monterville Dilley. In addition to his wife, his heirs are his brothers and sisters, who are named in the will. Assuming people tend to list children in birth order, and the fact that all 7 of the children above are also named in the will, it seems reasonable that these two documents refer to members of the same family.
