DESCRIPTION OF THE CONTENTS OF THE WILLIAM DILLEY ACCOUNT
by Jay D. Andrews

In 1989, 1 compiled an account of Price Dilleys early generation descendents. This book failed to provide easy entrance for descendants, because it included family listings only down to William Dilley my great grandfather. This new account provides all known descendents of William down to those born before about 1930. A beginning section repeats the early families o-f Price for connection to earlier generations. Some published records and family and courthouse records are repeated from fiercer Co., PA, and Roseville, IL, both living sites where the Dilley clans spent a full generation before moving west. A set of census records is included to support names and ages of descendants. A body of supporting records, including letters from descendents, is included. Some courthouse and cemetery records are included which are mostly from the two main living sites. There are repetitions 4rom records in the earlier Price Dilley accounts. Descendents with names other than Dilley are included down to about 1950. I have avoided writing biogaphies for living people, although some letters from them are included. Generation and person numbers for Price and his children are retained from earlier accounts. Starting with William, born 1811, a new set of generation numbers is used for his descendents. That keeps listings of families in order of births. I do not intend to add later generations for whom I have little information. I would advise descendents to consult the book written by my father, Jay S. Andrews, for relatives and clan activities in all Dilley living sites. It is on LDS microfilm as are all my genealogical accounts which are available from LDS at Utah by microfilm.

The arrangement of contents of this Wiilliam Dilley account is perplexing, but hopefully, has been sorted by localities including Mercer Co., then Roseville, followed by Sterling, and lastly Bloom, KS. These are sites that a descendent would visit to extend knowledge of the Will lam Dilley clan. Producing an index was difficult for this account with so many family names. It is hoped that the List of Contents will help in this regard. I could make a book from my clan letters, but maybe that is not a good idea. I have retained copies sometimes but not always. Each of you will have to provide a history of your life if you wish to be remembered by your offspring and relatives. My sister, Grace Brooks, is doing this with stories about many of our ancestors. I am quite satisfied with the accomplishments of my generation, thanks to our parents, Jay and Eva Andrews, and also to earlier generations who gave us good genes for long life and fine families.

The index for this account of Dilley families and their relatives is complicated. Only given names are listed for members of Dilley families. The brackets around family names in census records indicate parentship. Full names are given for families other than Dilley in a separate index. Names are indexed only for the genealogical section from page 1 to 30 in two separate lists. The other entries with separate numbers are arranged mostly by living sites. The List of Contents is extensive and should be used for finding items other than those in the genealogical section. 1 have had no contact with most of the relative families for 50 years, and probably all those who wrote me letters in the early 1940s are dead. This account will be submitted to LDS in Utah for microfilming. Please forgive and notify me for mistakes; they always appear after I have made copies. I will be 82 on 9 Sep 1998.

For those who wish to know earljer generations of Dilleys in Our Price line, they are: John Dilley Sr. of l4oodbridge, NJ about 1668; John Jr. born 1680 of Woodbridge and some other areas in New Jersey; Ichabod Dilley born about 1724 who migrated from NJ to Washington Co., PA about 1790, where his two sons Price and Lewis lived for a generation. He appeared in the 1800 census there before dying; Price also appeared in the 1800 census in Wash. Co. PA, but moved to Mercer Co., PA in the NE part of that county soon thereafter. Price Sr. lived the rest of his life in Mercer Co., but is buried in Plain Grove Cemetery in Lawrence Co. PA, which county was erected after his death. Prices son William b 1811 is the ancestor from whom this account has been compiled. William moved to Roseville, Warren Co., IL about 1840, then to Sterling, KS in 1883 for his last years. He is buried at Sterling along with many of our ancestors and relatives. Jay D. Andrews

THE PROBLEM OF PRICE DILLEYS BURIAL PLACE
by Jay D. Andrews, September, 1992
(Revised 4 Mar 1998)

Price Dilley is buried in the Plain Grove Church Cemetery south of Grove City, PA in Lawrence Co., PA. When my wife and I visited the church and cemetery in 1987, we got lost on winding country roads and I lost my sense of direction. The cemetery lays across the road from the present beautiful, large Presbyterian church. I have a copy of the church history in a 98 page booklet. The first log church was built in 1799, and the second in 1805 which was the period of first settlement of the area. The first three churches were built on the west side of the road near a spring. The present church was built in 1896 on new land across the road on the east. I was told that stones in the old cemetery were moved out to allow grading and improvement of the site. Then the stones were replaced in rows which do not indicate the original sites or relationships.

Price Dilley moved to Mercer Co. soon after appearing in Washington Co. for the 1800 census. At that time he had five sons, and only one daughter under 10 years of age. I believe that one or two girls were probably born before the first son Ichabod in 1783. If so, they probably married in Washington Co. and may have remained there. Price born in 1754 appeared in the 1810 census for Mercer Co. with three boys and two girls. His two sons Ichabod and Lewis appeared in that census with families, and two girls under 16 years remained in the family. We do not have information on Prices three daughters by Sarah except their names listed in his will. All three girls were listed by their first names only in the will. Price left $20 to his grandson James Dilley Laton, but 1 have no information on this family.

Prices first wife, Sarah Cooper, died in 1817 and was buried at Plain Grove Cemetery. Price appeared in the 1820 census for Mercer Co. in Butler Co. Slippery Rock Twp. an area which had formerly been in Mercer Co. We presume that he had moved near Plain Grove before Sarahs death. This is surprising, because all his sons and relatives are buried at Fairfield Church Cemetery or nearby Lebanon and Sandy Creek cemeteries in the northeast corner of Mercer Co. He was listed as an Elder early in the history of Fairfield Church along with Daniel Axtell who is also my ancestor.

Prices wife Sarah was a Cooper, and a lot of Coopers are buried at Plain Grove Cemetery southwest of Prices graves. Presumably, he married Sarah about 1780 in Washington Co., PA. However, Coopers are common in both Washington and Mercer counties, and some of them came to Mercer Co. with the ìTen Milersî from Washington Co. Why did Price move away from his older sons and relatives in old age to another church? These old pioneers were highly religious and there were separations of religious groups as had happened at Plain Grove Presbyterian Church.

Sometime after the 1810 census, Price joined the Plain Grove Presbyterian Church in Lawrence Co., south of Grove City. Did he move to be close to Sarahs relatives, many of whom lived in Slippery Rock Twp., Butler Co. PA? They attended church at Plain Grove in Lawrence Co., PA. Sarah died in 1817 and she was buried at Plain Grove Cemetery. In the 1820 census, Price had a boy age 1016, probably a grandson, and a girl age 1626, and wife Rosannah <45 years old. He had married Rosannah Elliott who brought a young daughter Mary into the family. In this census, both Price Jr. and Matthias (Matthew by census record) were married and living close to Price in Slippery Rock Twp. Butler Co., but without children. This township and a creek by that name are located on the southeast border of Mercer Co. with Lawrence Co. west of Butler Co., and Venango Co. east of Mercer Co.

There is a problem census record for Matthew Dill ey in Slippery Rock Twp, , Butler Co., PA for 1820. The village of Slippery Rock in Butler Co. is almost straight south of Grove City in Mercer Co. The Plain Grove Presbyterian Church is in Lawrence Co. The census record for Matthew shows one male and one female between 16 and 26 years of age. This was Matthias because Price Jr. also appeared in the same area along with with Price Sr. in 1820.

-2-

I have a one page extract from a compilation of wills in Mercer Co., PA., published in 1984, which lists Matthew Dilley along with Prices children but no mention of Matthias. This could easily be construed as a misreading of Matthew for Matthias, but did the census compiler also misread the name in the 1820 census, a completely separate recording of the name? The name of Matthias is written abundantly in five consecutive Federal censuses as well as land records and published biographies.

This 1820 census must have referred to Matthias son of Price, because Price was living near Plain Grove Church by 1817 at least. Matthias was born in 1798 in Washington Co., PA, so he would have been 22 years of age in 1820, and 26 years of age in 1824 when Price wrote his will. Price died in 1826 and his will was probated in Mercer Co. Why did Price name his youngest and oldest sons as his executor in 1824? Could it have been because Matthias was living close to him in Butler Co.? These are all Mercer Co. records because Lawrence Co. records did not begin until 1849. By 1830, Matthias was back living near Fairfield Church with four daughters. This raises another problem. Thomas Brandon Dilley b 13 Jul 1830, whom I have as the first child and son of Matthias, does not appear in Matthias will, but published records put him in that family. Matthias died in 1880 age 82 years.

Price married (2nd) Rosannah Elliott, a widow with a daughter named Mary Wilson who married a Cooper! I have no birth date for Lucinda the only child and daughter of Price and Rosannah, but obviously she was still quite young when Price died in 1826 at age 72 years. A guardian was appointed for her in the Mercer Co. court. I do not know the significance of Roseannahs property being left with John Auher in Washington Co., PA.

I still do not know the significance of the marriage of Price Dilley to Rachel Totten at Providence, New Jersey in 1774. Price would have been 20 years of age then. He migrated to Washington Co. with his six cousins, sons of David Dilley Sr., between 1776 and 1780. The simplest explanation could be that Rachel died early in the marriage, possibly in childbirth. Then Price married Sarah in Washington Co., PA. There are no records for Sarah except for her name in the will and on her gravestone. It is interesting that Lewis Dilley also married a Cooper, thereby, providing two sets of Cooper genes from this clan for we descendents. Note that Price named one girl Abigail, and that there is evidence that one girl at least was born before Ichabod in 1793. The years between 1774 and 1783 seem long without children in those times, but note that the rest of Prices family show wide spaces between births. The birth year of John who died in 1813 is speculative, because he was listed in the 1800 census as under 10 years old (3 male children < 10 years), yet he had three children by 1813 when he died. His son Stephen was born in 1810. Also, perplexing is the 1812 war marker placed on his grave. Did he die from military disability?

John Nahum (will listing) Dilley died so early that he seemed forgotten by later generations. His son Stephen accompanied William, John and Samuel west to Roseville, IL. 1 have little info on the two girls left by John for whom guardianships were established as for Stephen. What happened to Johns wife?

BRIEF HISTORY OF PRICE DILLEY AND HIS DESCENDANTS

Price Dilley was born 28 Feb 1854 in New Jersey and he married Abigail Totten 27 Nov 1874 at New Providence Church in Essex Co., NJ. Probably this Price Dilley was the same man who moved to Washington Co., PA about 177680 with David Dille Sr. and six of his sons. He was not a son of David as the Dille book presumes (bible records of David Jr.). Apparently, Abigail died in NJ or at the pioneer settlement along Ten Mile Creek without bearing children. Price joined the Upper Ten Mile Presbyterian Church as a single man, and his first son Ichabod was born in 1783. Apparently, he married Sarah Cooper a member of one of the families of Axtells, Tottens, Condits and Coopers and others that migrated as a church group.

We suspect that Price was a son of Ichabod Dilley who with his son Lewis was living in Morris Co., NJ on adjacent 12 acre farms from 1778 to 1789. Ichabod and Lewis migrated to Wash. Co. about 1790 and appeared in tax records thereafter. No proof of this relationship for Price has been found. Ichabod b 1724 was an old man with no land in the 1800 census for Wash. Co., and he was living alone with one cow. He died shortly thereafter. Almost no gravesites for pioneers in Wash. Co. have been found for people who died before about 1800. Probably boards were used as grave markers during this early settlement period when Indian attacks were common. They lived in forts in summer and worked their fields with guns handy. David Dilles gravesite is also unknown although his wife lived until 1826. None of Davids eight sons died in Wash. Co., because they all moved west between 1790 and 1816.

About 1800, Price Dilley moved to Mercer Co. PA along with many other members of the Presbyterian church including Daniel Axtell, Condits, Coopers etc. Fairfield Presby. Ch. in the NE corner of Mercer Co. was the social and religious center that tied these strict Presbyterians together. The Rev. Thaddeus Dodd who was the leader of two communities of migrants at Amity and Prosperity in Wash. Co. died in 1793, but all his detailed records of the migration, marriages, births, etc., which migration sometimes took several years, were lost. About 1800, many families including Condits, Dilleys, Axtells, Coopers, etc. moved north to Mercer Co., PA., and they were frequently related by marriages.

Price Dilley was an Elder in the Presby. Ch.at Fairfield, but sometime before 1816 when Sarah died, he moved to the southern edge of Mercer Co. which became Slippery Rock Twp., Butler Co., PA. He made a will in 1824 in Mercer Co. listing all five sons and four daughters. He died there in 1826 among Coopers who are suspected to be relatives. He is buried in the cemetery at Plain Grove Presby. Ch. in Lawrence Co. not far from his home site. There are numerous Coopers buried near Price and his two wives. He married Rosannab Elliott about 1818 and they had a daughter Lucinda Dilley. The 1820 census shows Price in Slippery Rock Twp and his two youngest sons, Price Jr. and Matthias (listed as Matthew) living nearby. Rosannah his wife was still at this site for the 1830 census, but both sons had moved back to the Fairfield Ch. area.

Prices middle son, John Nahum?, died in 1813 possibly from service in the War of 1812. He left a son Stephen and two very young daughters who were all treated as orphans requiring guardians then. Although John was named in the will, he was forgotten by relatives who could not identify Stephens relationship to other Dilleys. Many of Prices descendants are buried at Fairfield Cemetery and others nearby.

About 1840, grandchildren of Price Dilley began moving west to Roseville, Illinois. Again the church affinities resulted in Axtells, Tuttles, and other related families moving too. All of the sons of Lewis first family except Price b 1816 moved west along with many of the children of Joseph Smith Axtell whose oldest daughter married my ancestor William Dilley. He too had many children

-4-
from two marriages. Ichabod, Price Jr. and Matthias Dilley remained in Mercer Co. although children of Lewis second family scattered into adjacent counties of Venango and Crawford. All of Prices sons, after John died, lived to relatively old age, and all had two wives with many children except Matthias who had three wives and fewer children.

The graveyard at Fairfield Church is full of Dilleys, Axtells, Condits and their relatives. My earliest correspondent was Mrs. L. C. Mook who was a granddaughter of David Waggoner Dilley b 1840, youngest son of Lewis Dilley. David married Emeline Corbin and had four daughters who married and lived in or near Mercer Co. for most of their lives. However, Mrs. Mooks mother died at age 23. Mrs. Hook grew up near Fairfield Church and she knew the relationships of Dilleys and Axtells to other families. She wrote me several long letters during the early 1950s, sending graveyard and courthouse records and relationships from her memories. She and her husband lived in Sharon after his retirement, but she was active earlier in genealogical circles. I visited Dr. and Mrs. Hook in 1972 when they were in their 90s, and she allowed me to copy much of her data not already sent to me. The account of Price Dilley in the Dille book was taken from one letter written by Mrs. Mook of which I have a copy.

I compiled a 109 page account of the Price Dilley clan, a copy of which is deposited at the Mercer Historical Society at Mercer. This account describes three generations of Dilleys in Mercer Co., from 1800 to 1900. Also included are accounts of those families who moved to Roseville, IL, and Sterling, Kansas from whom I am descended. Three generations are provided almost complete for names but often lacking dates of births, marriages and deaths.
The collateral families of female Dilley descendants are poorly known. I visited Mercer Co. in 1972 and 1987 when I copied many graveyard inscriptions at Fairfield Church, and also sought records at libraries and the courthouse. I have census records from 1800 to 1880 for all Dilleys and Axtells at the three living sites in Mercer Co., Roseville, and Sterling, Kansas.
There is another branch of Dilleys who resided in Trumbull Co., OH. Four brothers, Thompson, Aaron, Samuel and Nathaniel migrated from New Jersey to Trumbull Co. soon after 1800. Some of the descendants of these brothers moved to townships in western Mercer Co. before 1850 of which Jonathan was the patriarch. This Trumbull Co. branch has been searched by Ruth and Gerald Dilley of Wind Lake, Wis., who have also made important discoveries about earlier generations of Dilleys in New Jersey. The NJ Dilleys prior to 1800 are poorly known, except for John Dilley who settled at Woodbridge in 1668 and is the patriarch. The first three generations are known fairly well from Woodbridge records, but as the Dilleys and Axtells moved westward in NJ, data are scarce and the relationships are uncertain.

There was another Dilley clan in Cuyahoga Co., OH near Cleveland beginning about 1803 which is descended from David Dille Jr. a son of David Sr., who with his six sons moved to Washington Co., PA between 1776 and 1780. This branch was large because David Jr. had some 20 children from two wives. Also a brother Asa had a large family. An account of this branch may be found in the Dille book. also have a 125 page compilation of the early generations of the David Sr. clan which adds to and corrects the Dille book account. There may be descendants of Dr. Samuel McFarland Axtell still in Mercer Co. for he with his son and grandson practiced medicine at Sheakleyville. His daughter Hannah married Dr. James Madison Dille who is descended from the Trumbull Co. clan; he practiced at Cooperstown in Venango Co., PA.

I cannot provide each of you with copies of Dilley data, but my booklet is available at the Mercer Historical Society in Mercer for reading and copying. If any of you have new information after reading my account, 1 would be happy to hear from you. Ziba Dilley has done a great job collecting local data on more recent generations than my account covers. Jay D. Andrews 106 cornwallis Rd. Yorktown, VA 23680

BIOGRAPHY OF PRICE DILLEY, SR. AND DESCENDANTS

Price Dilley was born in New Jersey about 1754. We know this from his gravestone which indicates that he died 22 May 1926 aged 72 years. He is buried with two wives at the Plain Grove Presbyterian Cemetery in Butler Co., PA. His parents are not known, but we suspect that he was a son of Ichabod and Abigail Dilley who buried two young children about 1750 in Newarks oldest burial ground. This Ichabod may be a halfbrother of David Dille Sr. born 1718 in New Jersey. During the 1780s, an Ichabod and Lewis his probable son were living on small acreages of adjacent lands in Morris Co., N. J. They disappeared from the tax rolls about 1789 and we think that they migrated to Washington Co., PA, where Lewis Dille Sr. b 1759 lived. Probably the Ichabod Dille b 1825, a lone bachelor over 45 years of age in the 1800 Federal Census, was his father. All the other Dilles who migrated to Wash. Co. about 1780 or earlier were sons of David Sr.

Price Dilley Sr. emigrated with David Sr. and his five sons and served in the Pa. Militia with them. Price and Lewis were probably cousins of Davids sons. A Price Dilley married Abigail Totten at New Providence then Essex now Union Co., N. J. on 27 Nov 1774, according to the records of Rev. Jonathan Elmer. This could be our Price Dilley except that his wives were Sarah Cooper and Roseanna Elliott. Could Abigail have been an earlier first wife of our Price? Price had 4 sons and 3 daughters but we have birth dates only for the sons. Were the daughters born before or after Ichabod b 1783 and Lewis b 1786? The next son was not born until 1796.

The group of New Jersey emigrants were closely bound by religion and they intermarried members of the Presbyterian Church of Morris Co., N. J. They included families of Axtells, Condits, Dodds, Lindleys, Coopers, Baldwins, Dilleys etc. The organized a church in August 1781 and Price was admitted in April 1783. However, he was on a tax list for 1781. Most of the early church records disappeared when their leader Rev Thaddeus Dodd died. He arrived in 1777 when settlers ìsummeredî in the fort for security from Indians, and held religious services.

Much speculation remains about why and when these settlers on Ten Mile Creek in southern Washington Co. came to the frontier during the Revolutionary War period. The English encouraged Indian attacks and local militia made annual forays to the north and west to combat them. David Dille Jr. was on Indianinduced militia service as late as 1793. When he applied for a pension in 1833, his brother Asa stated that the migration occurred in 1776 when he was 9 years old. If he was born in 1767 as he states, he began having children by 1790 according to their birthdates. It seems more likely that this church group emigrated in 1776 before the county was organized and the first church meeting was held. The Revolutionary War may have been the cause of migrations from this area of New Jersey which was severely disrupted by camping troups and some battles.

About 1800, some Axtells, Condits, Dodds and Price Dilleys family moved north to Mercer Co., PA. There they lived in a NE sector called New Lebanon and established Fairfield Presbyterian Church. Fortunately for genealogists, none of the descendants of David Dille Sr. moved to Mercer Co. but they crossed the Ohio River and moved west and north. However, a few descendants of Thompson Dilley, one of four Dilley brothers who emigrated from N. J. to Trumbull Co., Ohio, moved across the state border into Mercer Co.

-6-

Price Dilley Sr. died in 1824 after all his children were adults except Lusinda, the only child by his second wife Roseanna Elliott. She was married earlier and had a W young girl named Mary Wilson who was living in the household. All of Prices known children lived to maturity, but because the list of children was mainly derived from his will, some unlisted children may have been buried in Washington Co. although none were found in Mercer Co.

John Dilley, who died 5 Apr 1813 aged 26 years, has long been a puzzle as to his parentage. He was born in 1787 which put him by age in the generation of Price Srs children. John left a son Stephen b 1810 and two daughters. According to Russell Dilley who lived in Roseville, IL, in close association with Stephen, he was considered to be a cousin by William Dilley. John was a son of Price Sr. who died so early that he was overlooked by later relatives searching for ancestors. Orphans Court proceedings in Mercer Co. established guardians for these three very young children. Prices oldest son Ichabod Dilley b 1783 became first guardian for Steven and presumably raised him. John served in the military during the War of 1812. (See the account of census records that proved the relationship of John as a son of Price Sr.)

1-1 FAMILY OF PRICE DILLEY b 1754

Price Dilley was born in N. J. 28 Feb 1754 and died 22 May 1826 aged 72 years. He emigrated to Washington Co., PA about 1776 with David Dille and his five sons. He married (1) Sarah Cooper in Wash. Co. where all their children were born. Sarah was b in 1758 and died in July 1837. He married (2) in Mercer Co., PA, Roseannah Elliott by whom he had one dau. Lusinda. She was married earlier because a child Mary Wilson was living in the household and later she married a Cooper. A guardian was named for Lusinda in 1826 after Price died. Price and both of his wives are buried in Plain Grove Cemetery, Lawrence Co., PA. Because birthdates are known only for the males, it is not certain whether his three girls were born before Ichabod or after Lewis and before Matthias (apparently one of each).

2-1 FAMILY OF ICHABOD DILLEY b 1783 (SON OF PRICE, 1754)

Ichabod Dilley was born in Washington Co., PA in 1783, years after the Dilley clan migrated from New Jersey about 1776. His father Price moved to Mercer Co., PA around 1800 but was still in Wash. Co. for the 1800 census. Ichabod was born 27 Jun 1783 and died 5 Nov 1855 (or 17 Jan 1855). He and both of his wives are buried in Fairfield Church Cemetery at New Lebanon, PA. He married first, 5 Jan 1805 Phoebe Axtell, a dau of Thomas Axtell (see 541 of Axtell Book) b 28 Aug 1786 in Wash. Co., and d 26 Jun 1832. A month later on 28 Jul 1B32, Ichabod married Abigail Holloway b 15 Oct 1800 d 11 Oct 1854. According to the 1830 census he had two children under 5 yrs and 1 under 10 yrs, so he needed a mother for the family. He lived his whole married life in W Mercer Co.

-7-

Ichabod had 19 children by his two wives, but many of his children died young including a set of triplets who died at birth. Only 4 of his 11 sons lived to maturity Wand only 1 of Abigails 8 children lived to maturity.

Ichabod appeared in 5 consecutive federal censuses in Mercer Co., PA, beginning with 1810. That year he had 2 boys and 1 girl all under 10 years of age. By 1820, he and Phoebe had 7 children living, including Newton born 1820, but not included in the census. Sarah had died in 1812. By 1830 the older children by Phoebe had left home and only 1 girl and 4 boys were living at home. In 1833 he began the second family with Abigail. By 1840, he and Abigail had 3 boys and 4 girls in the home, which included Ziba, John H. and Levi, plus Phoebe, Ruth and a couple older girls from the first marriage. By 1850, only Abigail and her sons John 17 and Ichabod 7 remained in the home. Most of his children did not move westward or follow several of Prices grandsons to Roseville, IL, after 1840. 2-3 FAMILY OF JOHN DILLEY b abt 1787, SON OF PRICE 1754

John Dilley b 1787 d 5 Apr 1813 (age 26 on gravestone) died as a young manpossibly as a result of service in the War of 1812. He is buried in Fairfield Church cemetery in Mercer Co., PA. His graveyard inscription and guardianship proceedings in Orphans Court at Mercer, PA left puzzles as to his relationship to the Price Dille clan, because there were no other records of him except a reference to John Nahum in Price Dilleys will in 1824. Prices oldest son Ichabod was the first guardian of Johns son Stephen.

Price Dille did not appear in the 1790 census of Washington Co., PA where he was living; several other Dilles who were paying taxes in the county were missing too, so it must have been an incomplete census. According to the 1800 census, Price had five sons of whom three were <10 years of age. Shortly after 1800 Price moved his family to Mercer Co., PA, which was before any of his sons had left the family in marriage. By 1810, Ichabod and John appeared in the census with families. Judging by the dates of birth of his first child, I conclude that Lewis probably married in 1810 after the census was taken. Only one of the three girls was left in Prices family in 1810, which suggests that the other two were born before Ichabod or in the wide gap between Lewis b 1706 and Price Jr. born 1796. The age on his tombstone clearly conflicts with the 1800 census as to Johns year of birth.
After discovering these census records, it became clear that John Nahum in the will was a son of Price; Price had named his sons in the order of their birth. Little is known about John and his two daughters, but his son Stephen joined his cousins William, John and Samuel in migrating to Roseville, Ill, where records are abundant.

2-4 FAMILY OF PRICE DILLEY SON OF PRICE 1754

Price Dilley b in Wash. Co., PA, 1 Aug 1796 d 3 Feb 1879 aged 82 yrs. His father moved to New Vernon, French Cr. twp, Mercer Co. PA about 1802. Price spent the rest of his life in French Cr. twp. and is buried with his two wives at Fairfield Cemetery at New Vernon. The gravestones for all three give the exact ages at death to the day. Three sons are buried in the same row at the cemetery although a small stone for Andrew B. max be only a memorial, for he was reported by Sherman Dilley to have lived in the midwest. Mrs. Mook, a relative who spent her youth and much of her adult life in Mercer Co., read the tombstones 25 years or more before I copied the inscriptions, some of which are illegible now. Price was a stonemason by trade but probably farmed too.

Price and Elizabeth Dille had 11 children7 boys and 4 girls. He married (1) Elizabeth b 24 Nov 1798 d 24 Feb 1856 aged 57 yrs. He married (2) Jane (Gordon)Axtell, a widow of Alexander Axtell who died in 1848 leaving several small children of whom Martha Axtell was brought to Prices home before 1860. Jane was born 3 Apr 1811, the same year as William Dilley her cousin through the Gordons with whom she retained a lifelong friendship. She died 12 May 1886 aged 75 years, 4 months and 9 days.

Price appeared in French Creek twp in Federal censuses from 1830 to 1870 form which we get the names and approximate ages of his children. Sherman Dilley, a grandson, also provided information on the family. Children of price and Elizabeth:

2-5 FAMILY OF MATTHIAS DILLEY b 1798

Matthias Dilley was born in 1 Nov l798 in Washington Co., PA and died 16 Jun 1880 aged 85 yrs. He moved to Mercer Co., PA with his fathers family about 1800 and settled among the Ten Milersî near New Lebanon and Fairfield Presbyterian Church. His neighbors were Axtells, Condits, Dodds, and Dillexs. Daniel Axtell and Price Dilley were among the leaders of this religious group of settlers. Matthias married Marx Brandon dau of Thomas Brandon of Weaver Co., PA. He learned the tanners trade which he pursued until an age of 40 years when he located on a farm in Sandy Creek twp. After bearing 8 children, Mary b 13 Oct 1802 died d 27 Aug 1843 aged 40 years. All of Matthias children were deceased by 1889, when J. G. Whites History of Mercer Co. was published, except Thomas 8. the eldest and Pluininer Dilley a Fenimore, Wis. merchant.

-10-

Matthias married second Mary Morton and had one daughter Martha Ann (age 4 in 1850 census). Mary died in 1855 and Matthias wedded Mrs. Peggy Gibson of New Vernon by whom he had a daughter Parmelia. In 1888, Parmelia was the widow of Elijah Moore and a W resident of Crawford Co., PA. Peggy died in 1865. Matthias and his brothers Ichabod, Lewis and Price, Jr. all raised families in Mercer Co., but many of their children moved west about 1940.

In his will dated 31 Jul 1878, Matthias left 2 shares of his estate to each of his surviving children: John It, James N., Matthias P., Sarah, Elizabeth, Jelina (Juliana?), Marx S., Almeda, Martha, and Pamela. The estate was assessed at $3,061.90. John H. was the Executor. Price and John Dilley were witnesses. The husbands of the daughters are given in the will. This list of children differs somewhat from one in Whites history giving the biography of Thomas B. in 1888. In 10 years after the will was written all the children except Thomas and Plummer had died. Plummer was not mentioned in the will and James N. was absent from Thomas biography list. In his biography, Thomas B. stated that Mary Brandon had only B children. In the biography of Thomas B., Matthias was given as born in 1795, but in three consecutive census records he gave birth years indicating he was born in 1798 or later. His first son was born in 1830 which would have made him 35 years old if born in 1795. Two early children are buried at Fairfield cemeterySamuel W. and Margaret.

1-1 WILLIAM DILLEY SON OF LEWIS 1786

. William Dilley was born in Mercer Co., Pa. 8 Aug 1811, and resided in Mercer Co. 30 years, Roseville, Ill., 42 years and Sterling, Kansas 14 years. He died at Sterling on 31 Aug 1897 and is buried there. He married Mary Axtell in Mercer Co., on 24 Oct 1833. She was born in Mercer Co. on 17 Aug 1814, and she died at Sterling 7 Feb 1886. She was a dau of Joseph Smith and Eunice (Tuttle) Axtell who resided in Mercer Co. In old age, William m (2) Eunice (Axtell) Robinson 27 Sep 1888 at Sterling.Eunice b 22 Max 1823 and died 23 Sep 1903 was a halfsister of Mary, the daughter of Joseph Smith and Elizabeth (Condit) Axtell. Eunice is buried at Sterling. Both Eunice and William fibbed a little about their ages in the marriage certificate.

William was the oldest son of Lewis and Mary (Cooper) Dilley who lived and died in Mercer Co., Pa. He had an older sister, Margaret, who died at 18 years and three younger brothers who lived into old age and reared families at Roseville, Ill. Mary Cooper died in 1819 and Lewis remarried to Jane Elliott and had 8 more children by 1840. Lewis remained in Mercer Co. and is buried at Fairfield Cemetery at New Vernon, Pa.

William moved west to Roseville, Ill. in 1841 when he was about thirty years old. A sister Sarah (Dilley) Gordon, and two brothers, Samuel and John also moved to Roseville about 1841. The Axtells, Dilleys and Condits and other strong Presbyterians migrated together in their moves west from New Jersey to Washington Co., PA. about 1776, and to Mercer Co., PA about 1800 before the next generation moved west to Illinois. At Roseville, most of the three clans became Congregationalists for unexplained reasons.

. There were very few families around Roseville then. William came west with three small children and settled on a farm along the road running east out of Roseville. Apparently he lived on this farm some 42 years. He owned at least two quarters of land and there are several recorded transactions in the courthouse at Monmouth which show that he bought and sold land at various times. About 1870 he began transferring or selling his land to his sons, Thomas Anderson and William Newell Dilley. The land records show that William owned the NW1/4 of section 32 and the SE1/4 of section 29. The first plot is on the right side of the road and the second begins onehalf mile out of town on the left side of the road. The plots lay catercornered across the road from each other.

A township directory for Roseville published in 1877 states that William was a Republican who lived on 5 32 and that he was a township supervisor for two years. William was a charter member of the Roseville Congregational Church organized in 1851. The remodeled church building still stands but is now used by a womans club (1946). William was a church deacon for 45 years, first in Roseville and later in Sterl ing. His pictures suggest a stern, forbidding man. His grandson Russell Dilley remembers him as a strict abolitionist and a man who would stick up for what he thought was right if it took the skin off. He maintained a transfer station on the negro underground ìrailwayî and he passed negroes from his brother Samuel at La Harpe south of Roseville to a cousin northeast at Galesburg (see article on a Dilley who was William).

William and his son Thomas Anderson followed William Newell to Sterling in a1883. Three years later in 1886 his wife Mary died. In 1888 he married Eunice Robinson at the age of 77. He obviously did not feel that old for he told the clerk that he was 70. Burton Axtell of Sterling stated that Eunice and William were a very happy old couple. William was retired by this time and had transferred most of his property to his children for no will or legal proceedings were found in the court records. William died in 1897 at the age of 86 years and is buried at Sterling between his two wives.

2-5 THOMAS ANDERSON DILLEY (William b 1811; Lewis b 1786)

Thomas Anderson Dillex was born at Roseville, IL 7 May 1843, resided at Roseville for 40 years and Sterling, Kansas 30 xears. He died at Sterling, KS 13 Nov 1913. He married (1) at Macomb, IL on 21 Apr 1860, Margaret Gordon, who was born 30 Sep 1838 and died 20 Dec 1870 at Roseville where she is buried. Thomas Anderson married (2) at Viola, IL 13 Mar 1873, Caroline H. Condit, who was born in Mercer Co, PA 24 Jun 1842 and died at Sterling, KS 16 Feb
1638. She was a daughter of William and Margaret (Gordon) Condit. Thomas Anderson and Sarah are buried at Sterling, KS.

Thomas Anderson was born 7 May 1843, a son of William and Mary (Axtell) Dilley. He received a commonschool education until he reached the age of 18 in 1861, at which time he enlisted for the Civil War. He joined a regiment of engineers and spent several years building bridges and fortifications for the union armies. Returning to Illinois, Anderson married his cousin Margaret Gordon in 1868. They lost an infant son in March 1870, and in December Margaret died. Anderson married Caroline H. Condit in 1873 and they had one son, Condit William in 1878. About 1881, they adopted a boy named Albert, who died at the age of 19 months. They also adopted a girl ìMantieî (Samantha Taylor) who was killed in Sterling in 1888 when she was thrown into a tree in a game of crack-the-whip.

-14-

Anderson lived in Roseville until 1883, part of the time on the William Dilley home place. He served as assessor and township supervisor at Roseville.

At the age of 40 years, Anderson and his father moved west to Sterling, KS. There he farmed a number of years before becoming postmaster of Sterling in 1906. He remained as postmaster until his death in 1913. He also served as mayor of Sterling for two terms, a member of the city council for four terms and township trustee for three terms. He belonged to Meade Post No. 14 6. A. R., and was one time commander. He took great pride in his war service and kept an album containing pictures of his war buddies.

When Anderson and William came to Sterling, they bought a sixty acre farm, much of which is now within the corporate limits of the town and is occupied by the Missouri Pacific Railroad depot and the Sterling Salt Works, as well as many residences. Anderson also acquired eighty acres of farmland just across the Arkansas River which he gave to his son Condit. This land is still in the possession of Condits widow (1945).

Anderson became almost blind in his later years. In 1911, he did not recognize his nephew Russell Dilley who called on him. Anderson commuted between the post office and his home by means of a horse and buggy, but was dependent upon the horse to get him safely to his destination. In the last year of his life he had two operations to remove cataracts. Anderson also had diabetes and passed away when gangrene and other complications set in. He left an estate of about 51300 cash, 85 acres of land and three town lots.

Thomas Andersons son Condit W. was the only child to reach maturity. Condit married late in life and had no offspring, so that branch of the Dilleys is no longer extant.

2-6 CARRIE RUTH (DILLEY) HITCHCOCK (William b 1811; Lewis b 1786)

Carrie Ruth Dilley was born at Roseville, IL 1 Feb 1845, a daughter of Wiliam and Mary (Axtell) C5illey. She died at Newton, KS 22 Jul 1906 and is buried beside her first husband at Sterling, KS. She married (1) 21 Feb 1869, Niles Robert Hitchcock born 25 Feb 1849 and died 16 Jul 18B4. Carrie married (2) 11 Dec 1896, W. H. Swagger.

A clipping from the Sterling Bulletin, Sterling, KS gives the following account of Carrie R. Dilleys life:

Carrie R. Dilley was born Feb 1, 1845, near Roseville, Ill., where she lived with her fathers family until she was united in marriage to Niles H. HItchcock Feb 21, 1869. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Plymouth, Neb., where they resided until 1877, when they moved to La Crosse, Co., Kansas. They remained there during the hardships of the drought period in Western Kansas, when they sold out and moved to Sterling in 1882. In 1884, Mr. Hitchcock met with a sudden death by lightning.

-15-

Carrie with her son and two daughters made Sterling their home until Dec 11, 1896 when she was united in marriage to W. H. Swogger of Greenfield, PA., where she resided until the death of Mr. Swogger Feb 19, 1903. Since that time she has made her home with her childrenMrs. Ira Rishel, Mrs. Frank Cornell, and W. W. Hitchcock. About a year ago, she became afflicted with a cancer in her side causing great suffering until released by death. During the latter part of her illness, she was cared for at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Rishel in Newton, Kansas, where she passed away in peace on the 22nd of Jul 1906 aged 61 years, 5 months and 21 days. She gave her heart to Jesus in early childhood and united with the Congregational Church in Roseville, Ill, at the age of 14. She lived a consistent Christian life during all the remaining days of her life. The remains were brought to Sterling, and the funeral took place from the home of her brother
T. A. Dilley. Rev. J. B. Schlichter conducted the services. (Slightly edited, JDA)

Four children were born to Carrie and Niles of whom three grew to maturity and are still living at this writing (1950). Glennie is buried with her mother at Sterling although the grave is not marked.

2-7 WILLIAM NEWELL DILLEY (William b 1811; Lewis b 1786)

Newell Dilley born Warren Co., IL 28 Max 1849 resided at many places in Kansas during his life. He was a son of William and Mary (Axtell) Dilley. He married (1) at Roseville, IL, on 2 Oct 1873, Eliza A. Worden born 4 Apr 1852 at Roseville, IL1 She was a daughter of Avery and Harriett (Finch) Worden of Roseville. Eliza died 17 Apr 1884 at Sterling, KS, where she is buried. Newell married (2) at Harold, Ness Co., KS, 14 Jul 1885, Mamie Grace Findlay who was born 30 Apr 1863 at Cleveland, OH. She was a daughter of Robert and Mary Grace (William) Findlay. Mamie died 21 Apr 1935 at Modesto, CA where she and Newell are buried.

Newell Dilley was born and raised on a farm east of Roseville. When 24 years old he married Eliza Worden and settled on a farm one mile east and 1/2 mile north of Roseville. This land, the E 1/2 of the SE 1/4 of section 29, was transferred to Newell from his father in Aug 1872. The house located on the NE corner of the 78 acres is still standing although considerably modified. Two children were born to Newell and Eliza here, but the family must have moved to Sterling, Rice Co., KS early in the spring of 1860, for Newell and Eliza here, but received into the Sterling Congregational Church by letter 28 Apr 1880. Leulla, who was born four days be-fore Christmas in 1879, was only a few months old at this time. Many members of the Sterling Congregational Church came from Roseville. Pliny Axtell was the first of the AxtellDilley clan to come being received into the church 29 Jul 1875. Nearly all the William Dilley familx including Everetts, Hitchcocks and Condits moved to Sterling.

-16-

A great many Dilleys, Axtells and their relatives attended this church during the 1880s, but death and removals soon depleted the ranks. The leader, Pliny Axtell, a man of means and ability passed away in an untimely death in 1887. Newells wife Eliza, died of consumption in 1884. Soon thereafter, Newell began a series of moves or migrations which continued throughout most of his life.

On 14 Jul 1885 at Ness City, Newell married Mamie Findlay in a surprise double wedding at which Jennie Findlay, Mamies sister, married Robert Osborn. Church records show that he transferred his church membership to Ness City, KS 15 Dec 1886. Newell and Mamie lived on a 360 acre ranch along the north bank of the Pawnee River, two miles west of the main northsouth highway to Ness City. Newells two children by his first wife, Russell and Luella, who had been back to Roseville to live with their grandparents, the Wordens, were sent out to Kansas by train in Nov 1887. They traveled to Dodge City alone and were met by Robert Findlay who had a small furniture store there. The next day Newell drove a team from Harold to get them.

Newell endeavored to found the town of Harold on his half section of land along the banks of the Pawnee River. A plat had been drawn showing two rows of lots with street names which can be seen in Ness City. Several stone buildings were erected including a livery stable, an ìopera houseî, and a post office. Newell operated a store, post office and real estate office. The town also had a hotel, school, church, blacksmith shop and a newspaper. However, hard times and drought soon forced the settlers to leave both the town and the country to survive. Livestock was abandoned to the open range. Newell drove back to Sterling in February 1890 with a team and wagon loaded with furnisture. Soon thereafter, Russell and Luella were sent back to Roseville to be reared by the Wordens.

Upon his return to Sterling, Newell settled on Thomas Anderson Dilleys farm on the south bank of the Arkansas River. There he also operated a store seeking trade with cattlemen driving their herds to the railroad at Sterling.

On 4 Sep 1891, Newell was living at Plevna west of Pratt where he had a horse and cattle ranch. He made several trips to Texas to buy cattle and drove them to the railroad for shipment. He always loved fine horses and kept a good team; he once traded a herd of cattle for a herd of horses much to the distress of Pliny Axtell who was in partnership with him and probably provided the finances.

Church records show that Newell transferred his membership to Plevna 26 Dec 1891, and back to Sterling 23 Apr 1893. Apparently, he lived at Plevna for a couple years then moved back to Sterling retaining the Plevna ranch, for Russell Dilley visited Newell and Mamie at Plevna in Jan 1895, and Eva Dilley was born at Sterling 22 Jan 1895. In 1899, Newell and his family were living at Wellsford, Kansas. They had a half-dugout sod house. I have a picture of Eva & Guy Dilley in front of the dug out.

The Newell Dilley family lived at several other places in Kansas between 1900 and 1917, including:Minneola19059, Abilene190913, Colony, 1915, and finally Bloom, Kansas in 191?. At Bloom, Newell built several houses and kept a few head of livestock before selling out and following Ethel and Adolph Melgren to California in 1924.

Newell Dilley was a religious man who inherited some of the mental qualities of his father William. He held strong opinions which were hard to change. He liked to trade property and always seemed to have something to trade despite setbacks and many changes of locations and enterprises.

3-10 CONDIT WILLIAM DILLEY
(2-5 Thomas Anderson Dilley)

Condit Dilley b.28 Jan 1878 at Roseville, Ill., a son of Caroline M. Condit and Thomas Anderson Dilley, was taken to Sterling, Kansas at the age of 5 years where he grew up and spent the rest of his life. He died 23 Jul 1944 and is buried at Sterling with his wife who survived him by several years. His mother

Caroline Condit was born 24 Jan 1842 in Mercer Co., Pa., a daughter of William and Margaret (Gordon) Condit. She lived to be 94 years of age and died 16 Feb 1938.

The Dilleys, Condits, Axtells, and Gordons were Presbyterians who emigrated from New Jersey about 1780 and lived on branches of Ten Mile Creek in Washington Co., Pa. About 1800 these churchoriented pioneers called Ten Milers moved to French Creek twp in Mercer Co., Pa. and established Fairfield Presbyterian Church where many members of these families worshiped for 40 years and where they are buried. See the Axtell and Condit genealogies for data on these relatives and ancestors. The Condits were a numerous and talented clan. Several Condits were pastors at Fairfield Church.

Anderson Dilleys first wife Margaret Gordon, who was his first cousin, died in 1870 nine months after losing her only child, a son at birth. She was a dau of Wm and Sarah (Dilley) Gordon who lived at Roseville, Ill. At Roseville, Mary Jane Dilley, a dau of Um Dilley b 1011 married James M. Gordon a son o-f Sarah and Win Gordon. The Dilleys and Gordons were closely related too in Mercer Co., Pa., by marriages and burials.

When I visited Condits widow Anne Dilley in 1945, we found in one of Thomas Andersons albums a picture of ìAunt Jane Dilley, her dau Margaret Cooper and Mary.~ These were pictures obtained by William Dilley when he went back to Mercer Co., Pa. to visit his uncle Price Dilley b 1796. After much searching, I found in the Axtell book that Jane was born in 1811 the same year as Wm so that they grew up together; she was a Gordon and widow of Alexander Axtell. She married Price Dilley about 1360 and brought two Axtell daughters into the family. Janes young son who was named John Gordon Axtell evidently stayed with Axtells or Gordons to be raised.

Both Condit and Thomas Anderson Dilley were interested in family history and patriotic societies. William Dilleys family relicts remained with T.A. who died in 1913 and Condit who died in 1944. William probably lived with his son T. A. after they moved to Sterling in 1883 until his death in 1897. There were no children by Condit and Anne, who was a druggist in the store partly owned bY Condit, because they married late (1936) when Anne was 45 years old. The location of William Dilleys bible from which I copied many family records is unknown. Other family records such as newspaper reports and printed death notices which I copied, also, may have been discarded when Anne died (JDA).

Thomas Anderson Dilley lived in only two places during his lifeRoseville and Sterling, whereas my ancestor William Newell Dilley lived at many sites in Kansas as described elsewhere. Since William had only two surviving sons, Thomas Andersons line came to an end whereas many Dilleys are descended from William Newell, and they live in California and Colorado. Fortunately, I acquired the photo albums of William Dilley which contain pictures of many ancestors and relatives as well as unknown people. The known people have been inscribed with their names by me. This was done partly by comparison with pictures that descended to our family.

3-15 RUSSELL AVERY DILLEY (2-7 Wm Newell Dilley)

Russell Dilley was born at Roseville, Ill, on 25 April 1878, the first child of William Newell and Eliza A (Worden) Dillex. His parents lived on a 78 acre farm one mile east of Rosevillethe E 1/2 of the SE 1/4 of Section 2?. The house, considerably modified, was still standing in 1946 on the NE corner of the farm. The land was transferred to Wm Newell in August 1872 from his father William. Russells father and mother were married 2 October 1873 nearly five years before he was born. His sister Luella was born in December 1879, and early in the spring of 1880, the family moved to Sterling Kansas. The Dilleys and Axtells (Russells grandmother was Mary Axtell) moved from Mercer Co., Pa. to Roseville about 1841 and settled along the road running east out of Roseville.

When Russell was nearly six years old his mother died of tuberculosis on 17 April 1884, and she was buried at Sterling. Russell and Luella were sent back to their grandfather Avery Worden at Roseville but they lived with his dau. Lora Bugbey. His grandmother Harriett Worden had died. Wm Newell married Mamie Findlay in Ness City, Kansas on 14 July 1885. They lived on a 360 acre ranch along the north bank of the Pawnee River. The Santa Fe Railroad was being built west towards Dodge City and Newell founded the town of Harold in expectation that the railroad would go along the river. One stone house is still in use and the foundations of the little village are visible yet, but the railroad went through Ness City on high ground 14 miles to the north.

In November 1887, Russell and Luella who were about 9 1/2 and 8 years old were sent by railroad to Dodge City where Mainies father (or brother?) Robert Findlay met them. This was the era of a boom in cattle raising in Western Kansas. Soon drought and depression (hard timesî) forced them to abandon town, ranch and cattle, and in February 1890 with a wagon load of furniture they returned to Sterling. Newell lived on his brothers farm on the south side of the Arkansas River and operated a small store to get trade from cattlemen crossing the river to ship their cattle east by railroad. In August 1890, Russell and Luella were sent back to Roseville to be reared by the Wordens except for a visit or two to Sterling and Plevna.

Russells grandfather Avery Worden bought Newells farm at Roseville and owned it for a long time. Most of the Dilley branch had moved to Sterling by then including his grandfather William. Russell remembers that he was not encouraged to associaste with the Dilleys, but by this time most remaining at Roseville were from the John Dilley branch who were Methodists not congregationalists as were the Wordens and William Dilleys. He did ride on farm visits with Johna son, Ira, who was a veterinarian for the State of Illinois for a number of years. The Wordens lived south of Roseville and Russell still owned a farm at Roseville in the early 1950s and visited there quite frequently with cousinsMrs. Josephine Pratt and Lora Soverign Bugbey daus of the Avery Wordens.

Russell married Lillian Rachel Curry (b 23 Feb 1876 and d 6 Dec 1906) on 9 February 189? at Roseville and he farmed there south of Roseville until 1909. Rachel died in 1906 of dropsy leaving four children and the youngest less than a month old. On 17 March 1909, Russell married Ruth Mary Curry, a cousin of Rachel . They moved to Abilene, Kansas the same year where William Newell lived from 1909 to 1914 and where my mother graduated from high school.

Russell moved to Canon City, Colorado after 2 1/2 years at Abilene for he didnt like the heat and the wind of Kansas. In a letter, he explained that he came to Colorado as a tourist to see the Grand Canon. He found grass, water and wood and decided to settle there. In 1950 he was still living on the same place that he moved to in 1911 and where he died in 1965. Russell was primarily a cattleman who fed and ran range stock for many years. He owned two small places on either side of his home place and all was irrigated land. He had early water rights in a complex system whereby access to water is in the order of acquisition of original rights.

When my Father and I, with our wives visited him in Nov 1950, he was busy with cattle in his feed lot behind the house. He worked hard from habit as he put it, and he was well satisfied with his life and family. At that time four sons and a daughter were living. The first child Harold died of appendicitus when nine years old. Avery had moved to California to operate a chicken ranch and the other three sons were cattle ranchers living near Canon City. Russell was taught thriftiness by the Wordens and he was enjoying the fruits of lifelong application of the traits of hard work and persistence. He escaped the wanderlust that

seemed to motivate his father, and as a reward he had most of his family close to him until his death on 25 Jun 1965 at Canon City. He seemed to be healthy and active in 1950 and hunted deer despite the loss of one eye. In one of his letters, he expressed the opinion that the easiest way was the best way in this life and that he was never ambitious to do more than live a pleasant comfortable life.

Russell considered Ira Dilley, the veterinarian, and Thomas Anderson Dilley the postmaster and town official of Sterling, to be the outstanding members of the family that he knew. Both lived many years in their respective communities of Roseville and Sterling and their personalities made them wellliked. Russell visited Sterling rather regularly to visit with his cousin Condit Dilley the only son and child of Thomas Anderson. Also, his sister Luella had some land in Ill. that he tended to. His letters indicated that he visited the Sterling Cemetery where so many of his Dilley and Axtell relatives were buried including his grandparents William and Mary (Axtell) Dilley. Both Thomas Anderson and his son Condit were interested in family history and patriotic societies although Russell never accepted membership in the Grand Army of the Republic for which Condit sent him records. It is curious that Russell never knew Burton Axtell, son of Pliny Axtell . Pliny was the able and effective leader of the two clans and the first to move to Sterling. Burton died in 1571 at the age of 96, presumably on the farm northwest of Sterling where he wqa living in 1945. Burton was a second cousin to Russell (through Joseph Axtell father of Mary and Pliny Axtell).

(Mary Stuart and I visited the Sterling Cemetery and Burton's son Donnell on Memorial Day in 1984).

About 1930, John Dilley, a son of Russell and a truck driver, looked up the Dilleys in Mercer Co., Pa. and found Price Dilley b 1816 a son of Lewis and Williams brother. On a family mission such as this, one would have expected that John would have been told about Sherman Dilley who lived on a farm one mile west of the old Price 1796 farmhouse. Sherman belonged to another branch of the descendants of Price Dilley (1754) who was the earliest member of the family to move from New Jersey to washington Co., and then to Mercer Co., Pa.

It was at Roseville where the Wordens, Axtells and Dilleys lived together that church and family ties separated the clans, and Russell remembers that as a boy, he did not associate with the remaining Dilleys at Roseville who were from the John Dilley family. The road east of Roseville was called the Dilley road because grandfather William, Uncle Thomas Anderson, Stephen and John Dilley all lived along the section line road running one mile east of Roseville. Russell was the best source for the history of Dilleys and Axtells at Roseville and Sterling, because he lived at Roseville after most of the others had left. Frank Pratt and Lora Soverign with their Worden connections were very helpful for describing the living sites and where to find records for the two clans of Dilleys and Axtells at Roseville. Russell had a good memory and knew all the early Dilleys and Axtells personally as a mature man. He was most helpful in providing insights into the relationships of the two clans.

I must tell a story about Russell. He drove us to the Royal Gorge and on the way we passed a steep declivity on the right side of the road. Russell was expostulating about careless drivers and told us a man had driven over the side of this seemingly endless mountain side. Dads wife, Ruth, looked over the side and asked, "where did he go?" Russell said, "I dont know, I wasn't his pastor."

John H. Dilley of Dorset pays the debt of Nature!

Jefferson, 23 August The following has been handed to us for publication in this department.

John H. Dilley was born 6 May 1833 at Clarks Mills, Mercer County, PA, where he spent his early life. He was the youngest son of Ichabod and Abigail Dilley, and in 1855 was married to Miss Mary Martin, and to them were born nine children of whom six are supposed to be now living. His wife died 27 Sept 1874. and in 1875, he married Miss Eunice McCartney. Of three children born of that union, one is living5 For several years, he resided in Hadly, Mercer Co., PA! where some 25 years ago, he united with the Presbyterian Church, of which he was a devoted member through life.

In 1886, he removed to Ohio, and for the past seven years has resided in Dorset. He has been in failing health for nearly four years, and for sevtral months suffered severely from dropsy of the heart. He bore his suffering patiently, and often said to those who were with him, that he would soon bid farewell to those who were dear to him on earth, and join those who had gone before to the bright and beautiful world beyond.

He passed peacefully away Sunday evening, 3 August 1903 (death records show 2 Aug 19a2). The funeral was held the following Tuesday at his late home in Dorset. Services were conducted by Rev. Davis of the M. E. Church, and his remains were laid to rest in the local cemetery. He leaves a wife, six sons and one daughter to mourn the loss of a kind and indulgent husband and father. Five of the children were present at the funeral: George W. of Clarks Mill, PA, Frank L. of Jamestown, PA., Wesley M. and Ira H. of Linesville, PA, and Mrs. R. H. Askue of Jefferson, OH.
