William Harrison Dillie
My line includes an Aaron Dille that may have come from Guernsey
Co., OH to Jay Co. IN in the 1830's. Jay Andrew and I can't figure
out who he is connected to for sure. But Aaron does have a land
deed in Jay Co., IN and is listed in a book on the history of
Jay County as the first settler in a particular township. His
son William Harrison Dillie was born in Jay Co. IN in 1836, is
in Randolph Co. IN in the 1860 census age 21 living with AJ Dilley
age 33 (probably a brother) who I think died in the Civil War.
William Harrison Dillie fought in the Civil War and I have his
pension papers, death record, marriage record, funeral card, etc.
He is my great grandfather. I used to decorate his grave which
is in Union Cemetery in Randolph Co. IN. He had 9 sons, 6 that
reached adulthood including my grandfather, Edward E. Dillie.
I have tracked his grandchildren except for his oldest son's (William)
children. But I am really stuck on who Aaron is, where he came
from and who his wife is. You will notice that I spelled Dillie
several different ways. So does all the paper trail. William Harrison
Dillie didn't write so others spelled it for him. Some of his
children spell it one way and others a different way. My dad and
I spelled it Dillie and William Harrison's headstone says Dillie.
If your papers have anything that might help me, I sure would
be
interested. Thanks.

Elizabeth Dille Reck
I found your name on Rootsweb. I think my line traces to Aaron Dillie of Jay Co. IN, which is on the IN-OH line. His daughter Elizabeth married a William Reck 1842 in Jay Co. She was born OH 1823. Aaron Dillie was listed 1840 Jay Co. Any possible connection?

William Harrison Dillie and AJ Dille
Hi Bob,
I trace myself back to the Aaron Dillie of Jay Co. IN. My great-grandfather,
William H. Harrison Dillie was born in Jay Co. in 1836. He is
listed as 21 years and a farmhand born IN according to the 1860
census (I know the age and birth date don't match) and living
with A J Dilly age 33 and A J's wife Manerva age 28 in Randolph
County, IN which is the next county South. A J is listed as born
in Ohio. From what I can tell A J was killed in the Civil War
and my great-grandfather served in the same one year unit, but
came home alive. I have William Harrison Dillie's Pension records.
I recently sent for A J's military records and to see if Manerva
filed for the widow's pension. I found a reference to Aaron in
an early history of Jay Co. It basically said that he was the
first resident of a particular township and nobody knew much about
him except that he was a good Christian person. And that in a
nutshell is all I know about Aaron besides the 1840 census record
on Aaron which shows 7 children plus he and his wife in the 40-50
age range. My assumption is that A. J. is one of his sons. I am
going to IN in Oct for a family wedding and I plan on going to
Randolph Co. to get William Harrison's death certificate. (I ordered
it over a year ago and haven't received it.) I think it lists
his mother's name. So far I don't have that. They lived in Stony
Creek Township which is on the border of Delaware County.
From being on this list serve for several months I have learned
that there are lots of Aaron Dillie's (Dilly, Dilley, Dille)!
Let me know if you have anything else or find anything and I'll
do the same for you. Do you know where in OH that Elizabeth was
born? I hope you join the list serve. There
is a lot of good information on websites that people share. You
are the first person I have found so far searching my branch of
the Dillie's.
Ann Dillie Smart, Aug 28, 2000
Elizabeth Dille Reck, George Washington Dilley
My search for my Dillie connection has taken twisted paths to
reach this point - meaning, I am just starting the search. I have
been in the genealogy game for about 30 years and published research
on the 300 year history of my Jordan family in 1996. So, I do
have a bit of experience getting crossed eyeballs in front of
microfilm readers, bee stings in cemeteries, and picking long
dead ants out of deed books. I started by searchng for my paternal
grandmother's family in Spencer Co. IN (Lindsey). Records in that
county stated my line married a Reck and his wife was a Deally
(spelled variously as Dealy, Deal, etc. as you know). My great
grandfather Alfred Lindsey m. Mary A. Reck 1869 in Spencer Co.
IN. A letter from a cousin stated she was born 7-31-1847 IN and
died 7-12-1930 St. Francisville, IL and was buried there. Alfred
Lindsey died 1883 Spencer Co. IN and Mary A. eventually married
another 4 times. It was not until I tracked down her 3rd marriage
that I found on her marriage license to Madison Ice in 1906 that
her parents were William H. Reck and Elizabeth Dille (both born
OH). The "Dillie" spelling was clear. From there it
was easy to find a marriage record for William H. Reck to Elizabeth
Dilly in 1842 Jay Co. IN. Jay Co. is on the eastern line of IN
while Spencer Co. is on southwestern line of IN. The 1840 IN census
of course, listed Aaron Dilley in Jay Co.
A possible family member was found in the 1860 Spencer Co. IN census (Grass Twp. 966-959) - George Dilley 44 OH (no property), Nancy 38 VA, Aaron 18 IN, John 16 IN, George 14 IN, Lamie N.? female 11 IN, Asw? 9, male, IN, William 7 IN, Amince? 3 IN. Know anything here? I do understand how census ages can lie - especially if there are poll tax age limits involved.
There was a large group of Recks across the IN line in Darke Co. OH, but I have yet to connect there. Right now, I am leaning toward another area of OH. I noticed there was an Aaron Dillie in 1840 Richland Co. OH, Aarons in 1830 Columbiana Co. OH, and 1830 Richland Co., Aaron Sr. on 1820 Belmont Co. OH, and Aaron in 1820 Richland. One of these must be the right direction. The Recks may have been in the same county as the right Aaron. So that is the state of my research at the moment.
Perhaps I have added at least one member of the family here - George. He should appear somewhere in an 1850 index. I will add my name to the Dilley (etc.) list, but please send what I have written on ahead to same for now. Right now my research time is limited, but I plan to retire early next year, so there will be results, if there are any possible. I think I need to catch up on what is known about all of the Aarons right now.
Bob Jordan, Aug 29, 2000
Thanks for the additional information. I found an Aaron in
the 1850 Census in Allen Co. living near a George. (This George
was killed in the Civil War), However when I compare ages with
the 1840 Census, I think I am on the wrong track. Jay Andrews
sent me some papers and he speculates that our Aaron may have
been in Highland Co., OH if I recall correctly with three other
brothers. I'll dig that out this weekend and see what I have for
you.
Ann, Aug 29, 2000
Dear Ann, Could the George killed in the Civil War be George Washington Dille? He was killed at the Battle of Chickamauga. He was married to Rebecca Valentine Dille. I have always thought that Aaron was his father but have never been able to prove it. George Washington Dille is my husbands 4th Great-Grandfather. Thanks!
Kim Dilley, Aug. 30, 2000
Dilley106@aol.com
I made a mistake in my last posting. The George Washington Dille who was killed in the Civil War was married to Nancy Hughes. His son George Washington Dille Jr. was married to Rebecca Valentine. They all settled in the Tower Hill-Pana Illinois area. I believe George Sr. was born in Ohio or possibly Indiana and Nancy Hughes was born in Virginia. Sorry about the mistake.
Kim Dilley, Aug 30, 2000
The George I had thought might be a brother was married to Nancy in the 1850 Census in Allen Co. Aaron and Mary lived in the same area. However, this Aaron was 70 and Mary was 60 which makes them too old to be the Jay Co. Aaron from the 1840 Census. They also had 3 young children with them. So I don't know the connections.
Your George Washington Dille--where did he enter the war from. I'd like to know more. Thanks.

brother or son to Aaron Dillie of Jay Co. IN? Anyone found him
on 1850 census? Anyone fill in the "hard to read" census
names? I also have another possible da. of Aaron of Jay Co. -
Thomas Reck m. Rebecca Dillie 1842 Jay Co. IN as well as Elizabeth
Dillie who m. William H. Reck 1842 Jay Co. IN. This William Reck

1850 Allen Co., IN Census
Yes the 1850 Census record was in Allen County IN, La Fayette
Twp. p. 230. The child you couldn't read was Lavina who was 1
in 1850. Everything else matches. except 10 years earlier--Well
actually George was 31 in 1850 listing. The listing for Aaron
age 70, was on page 232. It shows him born in VA, Mary age 60
VA, Emily 16 OH, Houston 17 IN, and Daniel 7 IN. I don't know
if there is any connection to the Jay county family of 1840.
Thanks for the additional sister.

George Washington Dillie Civil War Record
Dear Ann, According to the pension records I have for George
Washington Dille, Sr: George W. Dille was enrolled on the 3d day
of July, 1861 at Shelby County, Il. in Company C, 35th Regiment
of Illinois. He was mustered into service as a private on the
31st day of August 1861 in St. Louis. On the muster roll of Company
C of that regiment for the months of September-
October 1863 he is reported as George W. Dillie, Sergeant and "killed at the Battle of Chickamauga, September 19, 1863." I think what makes this so difficult is all the spellings of the name Dilley. And the tendency to name so many of the children after others in the family.
George W. Dille married Nancy Hughes in Randolph County, Indiana on December 31, 1840. A record of this marriage is in the Pension Records I have. By the 1860 Census, George and Nancy had moved to Spencer County, Grass Township, Indiana. In this census, George is listed as age 40, Nancy, age 38. The children are as follows: Aaron, age 18, John, age 16, George (Jr.), age 14, Lavina, age 11, Asel Simeon, age 9, William Lewis, age 7, and America Mildred, age 3.
Sometime between 1860 and 1861, George and Nancy and the children moved to Shelby County, Il. In 1863 Nancy gives birth to another son James D. Dilley. In the 1870 Drypoint Township, Shelby County Census, Nancy is listed as the head of household and widow of George W. Dille. The children still in her household include Lavina, age 20, William Lewis, age 17, America Mildred, age 12 and James D., age 7. I have found nothing yet that lists George W.'s parents but I do know he was born in Ohio. I still believe he is the son of Aaron but have no proof. Thanks,

Ohio Roots for Aaron and George
Thanks Kim, I found more of my notes this weekend which agree
with what you have. I do have something Jay Andrews sent me "Genealogy
of the Ephraim Dilley Clan of Guernsey Co., OH" p. 35 which
I quoted as saying "George was b. 17 Dec. 1819 in Muskingum
Co., OH" I don't know if that helps. George also had several
land transactions in Allen Co. I seem pretty positive that his
father's name is Aaron. Of course which Aaron! But I'll need to
dig further to find my source. I also have a copy of the Randolph
Co. marriage index showing the same marriage date you have. I
also show a son Samuel B. Dillie born 2-20-1848 who died 8-11-1848.
And I show Asel name as Aceal, but I probably had trouble reading
the Census record. All the other names match yours. When I was
first putting information in my computer program, I didn't know
how to do the sources. Now I'm going back and re-entering all
of that. It is so time consuming but so important. I haven't worked
on the Dillie's yet--I'm about done with the Jones family and
maybe 60% of the Thornburgs. There are so many Thornburgs. 3 brothers
came from NC to Randolph Co. IN and they each had about 12 kids
who in turn had large numbers of children. My William Harrison
Dillie married a Thornburg in Randolph County. The good news is
that they were Quakers in the early days so there are more records
than the Dillie's left.
My work is getting very busy so it may be a while before I
can dig into my records again.
Ann, Sept. 5, 2000
Possible Descendants of Aaron and Mary
I double checked the census of 1850 Allen Co. IN for Aaron Dilly
and found the following: Layfayette Twp. p.463 (2227-2239) - Aaron
Dilley 70 VA, farmer 300 real estate, Mary 65 (not 60) VA, Emily
16 OH, Houston 17, IN, Daniel 7 IN.
The above does not match the 1840 census of Aaron in Jay Co. IN - which leads me to believe the 1850 record is "more wrong" than the 1840 record. In 1850 Allen, it short distance away, was Aaron's son George's family. He was listed as age 31 OH - thus born about 1819. This age is consistent with other census records for George. In the 1840 census, Aaron was listed with 3 sons - under 5=1 (b. 1835-40), 10-15=1 (b.1815-20), 15-20=1 (b.1810-15), 40-50 = 1. There are four daughters listed - 2 age 5-10 (b. 1830-35), 10-15=1 (b. 1825-30), 15-20=1 (b.1820-25). The wife was listed as age 40-50 (b.1790-1800). I think the ages of the children are right for 1840.
The oldest son was George (b.1819) and oldest daughter was Elizabeth (b.1822). These ages seem to indicate a marriage date of about 1818 - in Ohio. The 1850 record indicates Aaron was born 1780 and Mary was born 1785. Mary would have been about age 33 when married and had her last child at about age 61-62. If we take 10 years away from the 1850 census record, the Mary was married at age 23 and had her last child at age 51-52 - still a little high. The Daniel, age 7, must belong to a brother or cousin. The Emily, age 16 (b.c. 1834), in household 1850 is probably a daughter. I think she married Thomas Robertson 11-4-1853 in Allen Co. IN. The Houston and Daniel Dilly do not "fit" as children of Aaron according to the 1840 census. So far, It is believed the following children are true children of Aaron, but be prepared for other findings:
1. George Washington Dilly (1819-1863) m. Nancy Hughes (1822-1895) 12-31-1840 Randolph Co. IN. He died Civil War in GA. She died Shelby Co. IL
2. Elizabeth Dilly (1822 OH-aft.1880) m. William H. Reck (c.1819-aft.1880) 8-16-1842 Jay Co. IN. They both probably died in Wabash Co. IL where they had moved between 1860-70.
3. Margaret Dilly (b.c. 1825 OH) m. Thomas Reck 3-5-1842 Jay Co. Thomas Reck (b. 1821 OH) was in his father's household 1850 Spencer Co. IN -listed as gunsmith and with no wife. Thomas disappears after 1850. The was also a Thomas Reck who reportedly died in 1848 during the Mexican War - from Spencer Co.
4. A.J. Dilly (b.c.1827 OH) m. Manerva (??) - listed 1860 Randolph Co. IN - may have died Civil War - no children found. His other brothers were named after U.S. presidents, so it would not surprise me to find his name was Andrew Jackson Dilly. If he died in the war, perhaps a pension record can be tracked. Need to find a marriage record.
5. Emily Dilly (b.c.1834 OH) m. Thomas Robertson 10-4-1853 Allen Co. IN- need to track this family to find if she lived long enough to have a death certificate which would show her parents.
6. William Henry Harrison Dilly (b.c. 1839 IN - I've also seen 1836?) m.11-3-1860 Angeline Thornburgh in Delaware Co. IN. He was living with his brother A.J. in Randolph Co. IN 1860. Can you tell me the rest of his story?
7. Houston ? Dilly (b.c. 1833) - this would complete this family if Houston was female. No records found so far that he/she survived after 1850.
Neighbors to Aaron in 1840: John Miller (40-50), Moses Miller (20-30), Abraham Powers (40-50), Henry Royer (30-40), Charles Royer (20-30), John A. Short (30-40), William Munden (50-60), William Silvers Sr. (70-80), David Silvers (20-30), William Silvers Jr. (20-30), Benjamin Myricks(30-40), Jonathan Wells? (30-40), Wade Suffboro? (20-30), Mathew McDenof? (3040), Mathew Montgomery (30-40), David Antles (30-40), Robert Piles (40-50), Lydia Louis (20-30), E-- Luois (40-50).
Please let me know your thoughts on what is presented here.

IN Marriage, Census and Land Records
For Ann, Kim and any others,
Jay County, IN was formed 1835 from Randolph and Delaware Cos.
IN. Aaron Dille was on the 1840 census of Jay Co. He had land
there, but I've only scratched the surface. Aaron probably moved
to Allen Co. IN by about 1846. The following marriages were found
in Allen Co:
Joseph H. Dille to Caroline Hedges 2-23-1854.
Mary E. Dille to Benj. Weber 4-15-1854.
Sarah Dille to Charles Miller 8-27-1850.
Emily Dille to Thomas Robinson 10-4-1853.
Fortunately, the 1850 census for Allen Co. concerning Aaron Dillie and his son George took place on Nov.15, so it shows Charles Miller 25 OH and Sarah Miller 19 OH living next to George Dillie. So Sarah is probable brother to George. 1860 Allen Co. IN Census, p.730 (594-594), Wayne Twp.: Charles Miller 34 OH farmer, no real estate, Sarah 28 PA, George 9 IN, Hannah 6 IN, Mary E. 4 IN, Gabriel 1 IN.
I wonder if the middle name of Joseph H. Dille above is Houston, who was living with Aaron in 1850. Need to find him in 1860 if possible. Some people have speculated that A.J. Dillie was also a son of Aaron. Haven't seen any proof yet, but there is strong circumstantial evidence. In a prior post I guessed A.J. to be Andrew Jackson Dillie - due it seems for Aaron's sons being named after presidents. So, found the following in 1850:
1850 Wayne Co. IN, Perry Twp. p.161 (89-89) - Jackson Dille 22, birth place unknown, laborer, Manerva 20 IN - apparently working on the farm of William Fife 76 MS - others in household were John Price 40 VA and John Brown KY. A.J. Dilly 33 OH and wife Manera 28 IN were on 1860 Randolph Co. Census. A possible brother W.H.H. Dilly age 21 was living with them in 1860. There are no children listed 1850-60.
William Dillie m. Angeline Thonburg 11-3-1860 Delaware Co. IN. Have not found him in 1850 yet. 1870 Delaware Co. Census, Perry Twp. (116-116) - Harrison Dilly 29, farmer IN, Angeline 28 IN, William C.F. 7 IN, Oliver P.M. 6 IN, Isaac S. 4 IN, George I? 1 IN.
Another possible da. of Aaron - Emily, age 16 OH, in Aaron's household 1850. Emily Dille m. Thomas Robinson 1853 (see above).
1860 Allen Co. IN Census, St. Joseph Twp., p.413 (1385-1256) - Thomas Robinson 36 VA, farmer, no real estate, Emily 32 OH, Andrew 16 OH, Christopher 7 OH, William O.? 4 IN, Robert F. 2 IN. This may have been Robinson's second or third marriage. Ages do not match up in these census records, but that does not happen very often anyway - for all families.
Have just started exploring the Jay Co. deeds. Jay Co. was created in 1835, so must eventually look at early Randolph and Delaware deeds. The Jay Co. deed index shows Aaron selling land to Geo. Meek 1843 and to Milton McVay 1846. He bought from William Finch in 1843. It is interesting to find a Hiram Dille selling land to David Hart in 1836. Hiram Dille m. Nancy Reasoner 4-25-1833 Delaware Co. Don't know if Hiram is a connection yet.
Any comments or additions would be welcome.

William Harrison Dillie and his descendants; AJ Dille
You have really been busy. I do have William Harrison Dillie's
civil war pension papers and know where most of his descendents
are. And yes George was one of his children. George died a bachelor
and is buried at Union (new part) as his brother Issac Sherman
who was a bachelor. I have their desk from the store they ran.
My grandmother inherited it and I got it. Two more sons Oliver
PM and my grandfather Edward Emmett are also buried at Union cemetery.
It is near
Winsor south of Parker. William Harrison and Angeline were buried in the old part of Union cemetery. I decorated all these graves as a child with my grandmother (Edward's wife). I know tons about Angeline and have her obituary. When I go to IN next mo. I intend to get William Harrison Dillie's death certificate. I ordered it over a year ago and they never sent it. (he went by Harrison). His son William is buried in another nearby cemetery. Thomas Herbert Dillie (Uncle Herb as my dad called him) is buried in Granite City IL. All the other boys died young and are probably at Union cemetery.
I recently ordered AJ's civil war records. From a web site I found that Minerva filed for a pension. An index shows AJ did a will before he left for the war and it was filed after he was killed, but the county clerk said that book of wills had been lost.
On the BLM site I found some of Aaron's land claims in Jay County. Thanks for all this work.

Land Records Jay and Randolph Co, IN
I live in Indianapolis and had a couple of vacation days. I was
able to spend about 8 hours in the State Archives. They have good
records of the Jay Co. deeds, but lack anything on Allen Co. -
I think they are renewing the films - some date back 50 years.
The early deed books of Randolph Co. are facing the same, but
there was an index. The early Delaware Co. books do not have an
index. So I was able to come up with the following:
Jay Co. IN - DB. C-521 - 28 Feb 1843: Indenture from Aaron Dilley and Mary Dilley, his wife, to George Meeks, all of Jay Co. - land in Jay Co. for $700. West half of the NE quarter of Section 34 and SW of the SE quarter of Sec.27 and Township 22N, Range 13E - estimated 140a. Signed Aaron Dille (his mark) and Mary Dille (her mark). Witnesses were Silas T. Gorden (J.P.), Basil (x) Higinbotham, Moses (x) Miller. Recorded 3 Dec 1844. I believe this deed shows Aaron to be the same as appeared in 1850 Allen Co. - wife Mary. The "Miller" name always pops up next to these Dillies. Perhaps we should explore the Ohio connection with some of the Millers.
Jay Co. IN - DB. D-115 - 22 Mar 1843: Indenture William Finch and his wife Amedia (Amelia?) Finch of Jay Co. to Aaron Dilley of same for $160- land in Jay Co. - E half of the SW quarter of Sec.25 in Twp. 22N of Range 13E - estimated 80a. Signed by William Finch and Amelia (x)Finch. Witnesses were William Nixon and Silas T. Gordon (J.P.). Recorded 25 Mar 1846.
Jay Co. IN - DB. D-116 - 24 Feb 1846 - Indenture Aaron Dille and Polly Dille, his wife, both of Jay Co. to Milton McVay of same for $300 - land in Jay Co. - E half of the SW quarter of Sec. 25, Township 22N, Range 13E - estimated 80a. Signed Aaron Dille and Polly (x) Dille. Witnesses Samuel Turner, Joseph Watson, Arthur McKern (J.P.). Recorded 3 Mar. 1846. Need the Allen Co. deeds to see what date Aaron bought land there.
Jay Co. IN - DB. A-32 - 1 Dec 1836: Hiram Dille and his wife Nancy Dille of Jay Co. to David Hart of same for $450 - land in Jay Co. - S half of the SW quarter of Sec.5 in wp. 22N of Range 10?E - 85.17a. Signed Hiram Dille and Nancy Dille (no marks). Witnesses were Silas Dille and John Sanders (J.P.). Don't know if there is a connection between Aaron and Hiram and Silas Dille. This was only appearance for these extra Dillies in the deed books.
Randolph Co. Deed Index 1820-48: Elias Webster 80a to Peter Dilly 1840 - I saw a number of entries for a Peter Daily later - such as George Meek (see above) to Peter Dailey 1842 for 440a. George Dille to Hugh Rust 1837 ? acres. Book M-246.
The Deed Index for 1849-59 was missing.
Deed index for Randolph Co. 1859-73: Monroe Lindsey to Harrison Dilly, et al (meaning others) 14 Jan 1871 -NW quarter and S part of WSW quarter ... (need to look at deed for rest), Sec.11, Twp.19, R12. Book 19-367.
Minerva Dilly to Isaiah Faulkner 9-12-1870 - NE-NW, Sec.28, T19, R12 -40a. Book 18-452. Appears ths might be the sale of Andrew Jackson Dillys land after he died in the Civil War.
William H. Dilley to Martha J. Clevenger 10-5-1872 - Pt. trac. SW1/4 -S29, T20, R12 - 9 1/2 a. - Book 23-146.
The spellings of the names are as the appear in the deed books.

Thanks - I'm trying. When enough information is collected about
neighboring families, I will try to find them in Ohio. If you
have any info on the Aaron land patents or Allen Co. deeds, please
send me the basics if you can. If there are patents, then perhaps
I can find copies of surveys, etc. here. If you are planing a
trip to Muncie IN next month, perhaps you can pick up plat maps
of Delaware, Jay and Randolph Cos. You will be able to find exactly
where the land was. If you are
near the courthouses, perhaps you can look at the actual deeds
that I could not find.
I know it looks like Harrison and Jackson were sons of Aaron, but have you found any proof or strong circumstancial evidence? Are these family stories passed down? Perhaps we can tie everything together soon, but I need to retire from my job to have more time - hopefully in April. What state are you living in? Do you have any ideas for the Indiana research I can put on my list?
Your notes on the list have pointed out some of the directions, so a big THANKS.
Bob Jordan, Sept. 15, 2000
Are you familiar with the BLM web site? I found several of Aaron's land grants on there. You can actually print them out. They are signed by the President in office at the time. http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/ I forget how they spelled Dillie. I tried it several ways.

I think I will need to go to Ft. Wayne to find other records. This will be a slow process though due to work. Next up in importance is the Jay Co. Court records concerning this family - then Allen Co. deeds and probate. Then Randolph and Delaware deeds and court. So, many searches left. I have a good feeling about finding the OH connection.

Aaron in Ohio and Jay County
Jay Andrews has an Aaron Dilley born in VA who moved to Morgan
Co., OH about 1812 where two probable brothers John and Moses
also lived. Aaron moved in the early 1830's possibly to Jay Co.
IN where he is listed in the 1840 census. The probable brothers
John and Moses arrived 1812 in Morgan Co. OH and were there in
the 1820 census with families. In 1830 there was no
census record for Aaron, but a tax record in Morgan Co. OH. Moses had moved to neighboring Muskingum Co. by 1830. According to Jay Andrews records, Aaron paid taxes March 6, 1833 on Range 10 Twp 8 Section 31 in Morgan Co., OH (Brookfield twp near S. border of Guernsey Co. Twp may have become part of Muskingum Co.). Ezekiel paid taxes in 1832 and Moses in 1834. George W. was born in 1819 in Muskingum Co. which fits his age in the 1850 census I have a note, was he Aaron's son by an earlier marriage? George W. Dillie is the one who died in the Battle of Chickamauga GA. There are several land transactions by George in Allen Co. Also one in 1867 could have been by his son. I have them listed in a letter Jay Andrews sent me.
I have searched all the Allen Co. Cemetery books looking for Aaron Dillie except I haven't found a book on Jackson Twp. Cemeteries. I did not find a grave site for Aaron.
Jay Andrews speculates that Aaron who is in the Allen Co. 1850 census is a Virginia Dilley with a link to the Cumberland area. This is because of the biblical names of George's children which are typical of the biblical names of VA Dilley's. This is from a paper called "Genealogy of the Ephraim Dilley Clan of Guernsey Co. OH written by Jay D. Andrews March 1997.
In The Biographical and Historical Record of Jay and Blackford Counties, IN. Chicago: Lewis Publishing Co., 1887, p. 271 under Jefferson Twp "The first settlers in this township came in 1834, namely Aaron Dillie, and Adam and Joseph Flesher." ( I found this book in Allen Co Public Library).
In Montgomery, M.W., History of Jay County Indiana. Chicago: Church Goodman & Cushing (I don't have the date but it was in the mid-1800's), p. 93 "The other settlement made during this year was in Jefferson Township. Mr. Aaron Dillie was the first settler there. But little is known of him now except that he was an earnest, consistent Christian. Mr. Joseph Flesher, who died a few years since, came next, and very soon after in the autumn of 1834, Joshua Hudson settled on the land... This year (1834) is known among the settlers then living in the county as the 'hard years' and the 'squirrel year.' It was a time of great hardships, caused by the coming of squirrels in vast numbers, who destroyed the crops. It was called the 'squirrel march or stampede,' as those animals seemed to be emigrating, by hundreds and thousands, for some cause yet unexplained. The inhabitants would stand around their fields and shoot them all day, but could neither frighten them nor perceivably lessen their numbers...." I found this book in the Family History Center in Salt Lake.
In Tract Book of Entry of Jay Co., IN 1832-1854 contributed by DAR of Portland IN in 1955-56 shows in the Jefferson Twp No. 22 listing on p. 24 SW 1/4 SE 1/4 Sec 27 40A Nov. 27, 1836 Aaron Dille. On p. 26, W1/2 NE 1/4 Sec 34 80 A Feb 14, 1837 Aaron Dille. Jefferson Twp borders on Randolph Co. Sections 27 and 34 border each other and section 34 is on the Randolph Co. border.
Bob I hope this helps some and I really appreciate all the searching you have been doing lately. Sincerely,
Ann Smart, Sept. 17, 2000
I'd almost forgotten about the land patent web site, but thanks to you I have printed out several Aaron "Dille" patents - one in 1850 Allen Co. Also found 4 George Dille patents in Allen - one in 1849. I think I found a good way to find some extra edge with this site concerning the OH connections. The site will find everyone in a certain section, township, and range who made patents there. I will then try to find them in the Ohio patents to see if there might be matches.

Mary/Polly
Ann, I'm not sure but it seems to me that I heard somewhere, that
Polly is sometimes a nickname for Mary.
Christina, Sept. 16, 2000
Ann and Christina,
How Polly comes from Mary I never figured out, but I have seen
it on some old family records, with it sometimes shown with both
names or with one in parentheses. Nicknames are odd things, though....one
branch of my grandmother's family had them for all the men, and
they never seemed to have anything to do with their actual names
except for John called "Mac" whose middle name was McGonigle!

The National Road (US 40)
I don't think I've seen when Harrison and his wife died. If his
death certificate listed his father as Aaron, that is VERY important.
His mother's maiden name would help find them in OH. I would like
some details on the pension record when you have time, but the
basics sent by e-mail would be fine. Chances are they traveled
down the US 40 trail to the Richmond area - then to Winchester
- unless they lived just across the Ohio line. My Jordans and
Coffins came up from the south through KY and the Cumberland Pass
(1831-33) - then through Cincinnati up to Richmond area and the
Quaker communities. From there they went to Shelby and Rush Cos.
IN.
Bob Jordan, Sept. 17, 2000
Good observation, Bob, about US Route 40. Indeed it was a main route to the West from Pennsylvania and West Virginia. FYI: Old Route 40 was originally called National Road. It was THE primary east/west road in the 18th and 19th centuries. Zanesville (Eastern Ohio), Richland County (Central Ohio), Mt. Victory (Hardin County in Western Ohio) and Richmond, Indiana all lie either on or no more than 50 miles from this route. These were all settling areas of Dille/Dilley/Dillies, as well as a few I'm sure I missed.
Old Route 40 is currently Broad Street (main intersection along with High Street), in Columbus, Ohio. Many Buckeyes are familiar with the history of this road because there are still many original stone road markers along the route through Ohio dating from the 18th and 19th centuries.
For anyone having the time, it would be interesting to plot a migration path across the United States and add a timeline to the primary route and it's "Dille tributaries."

Hancock County connection?
Hello Ann: I just read your letter to Dilley-L regarding the Indiana
Dilleys. Did you notice the one about the man who founded the
town of Dilley, Oregon? "From "An Illustrated History
of The State of Oregon" Hines 1893, pp 832, 833, 834.
Milton Elias Dilley, an eminently respected pioneer of 1853 of Oregon, and the after whom the enterprising town of Dilley is named, is a native of Indiana, being born in Hancock County, May 15, 1836. His ancestors came from Scotland and located in Virginia where his father, Samuel Dilley, was born........." I see from my atlas that these two Dilley families would only have been
from 40 to 60 miles apart in Indiana. I haven't searched yet for the relationship of Samuel and Aaron. I see that the Aaron born in 1721 had sons Samuel & Aaron and am wondering if the Indiana Samuel and Aaron are grandsons of one of those men. These are not my line of Dilleys but I am trying to tie in all the relationships I can.
Regards, Gary Poole in Oregon, Sept. 22, 2000
Ann Smart wrote: I've never seen anything that ties my Aaron to Samuel. However I do think he was born in VA. John and Moses are speculated to be brothers by Jay Andrews. I'll keep an open mind about this. I didn't even know there was a Dilley, OR until I got on this list. So which line are your Dilley's?
...The Dilley who established the town in Oregon is, of course, not my line but I like to see how many of the families I can connect. I have enjoyed meeting all of the distant cousins on the internet and have also had the opportunity to meet some in person. The geographic proximity, and the birth dates being only a few years apart, made me wonder if your ancestor and the Milton E. Dilley, born May 15, 1836 in Hancock, Indiana, might be at least first cousins, if not closer related. I am old enough to remember that, back when the towns here were all small and transportation was slower, everyone knew most of the people in their small community and most of the other small communities. Also most of the people in those communities were related in some way. I imagine that is pretty much the way it was back when Indiana's population was small and communities were also small. Regards,
Gary, Sept. 23, 2000
There are a number of Dille marriages listed in Hancock Co. which you can find by going to the Indiana State Archives site. Right now, I don't see any of those names connected to the Jay-Allen-Randolph Co. Dilles. Seems your family may have some connection with the Fry family which may have come from Stokes Co. NC (German settlement there).
Bob Jordan, Sept. 24, 2000
Sorry about not answering right away, but there is not enough time in the day right now, but one of these days .... I did receive your Dille clues on Morgan Co., Ohio, etc. possible. It appears to be a strong clue. When I have a chance, I will try to order some tax records. If Aaron is there, perhaps the dates will match his move to Jay Co. about 1835. I think I now have 8 possible children for Aaron. If so, George was not in Aaron's household in 1840 - probably living in another (in-laws?). I will post that on the list next. Thanks for the info. I will follow this up. Since I live practically next to the IN archives - I can do research there - only on Saturday mornings for a few hours, but that must do for now. Again - thanks.

Aarons possible descendants
The following gives my version of Aaron Dille's family - there
are 8 children, if this is proven correct: Aaron Dille (b. 1790-1800
VA, d. 1850-60 Allen Co. IN) m. Mary (??) about 1819 OH. Moved
from possibly Morgan Co. OH area to Jay Co. IN about 1835. Moved
to Allen Co. IN about 1846. Possible children:
1. George Dille (b.c.1819 OH) m. Nancy Hughes 1840 Randolph
Co. IN
2. Elizabeth Dille (b.c.1822 OH) m. William H. Reck 1842 Jay Co.
IN.
3. Margaret Dille (b.c.1825 OH) m. Thomas Reck 1842 Jay Co.
IN.
4. Andrew Jackson Dille (b.c.1827 OH) m. Minerva Finch 1847 Wayne
Co. IN.
5. Emily Dille (b.c.1828 OH) m. Thomas Robinson (Robertson) 1853
Allen Co. IN.
6. Sarah Dille (b.c.1831 OH) m. Charles Miller 1850 Allen Co.
IN.
7. Joseph Houston Dille (b.c. 1834 OH) m. Caroline Hedges 1854
Allen Co. IN.
8. William H. Dille (b.c.1836 IN) m. Angeline Thornburgh 1860
Delaware Co. IN.
Mary E. Dille m. Benjamin Weber 1854 Allen Co. IN - need to find their census record 1860 - could actually be Aaron's widow and not daughter. Any thoughts on the above lineup?
Bob Jordan, Sept. 26, 2000
Joseph Houston Dille [later decided not a child or Aaron]
Very impressive. I wonder why Joseph Houston wasn't named after
a president? George Washington Dille, Andrew Jackson Dille, and
William H. Harrison Dille certainly have that pattern. The Civil
War pension records submitted by William H. Harrison Dillie do
list his birth place as Jay Co. IN. I have ordered AJ's pension
records (the net shows that Minerva filed) AJ and George were
both killed in the Civil War. Has anybody out there ordered George's?
I didn't do that one. I wonder if Joseph was in the war? Does
anybody know anything about him? Thanks for all this work Bob.
Ann Smart, Sept. 26, 2000
George Washington Dilleys pension records
Dear Ann and Bob, I do have George's pension records. They are
very difficult to read. I will see what information I can get
from them and let you know what I find. Have been swamped with
work lately but will get back to you as soon as I can. Great
work Bob!
Kim Dilley, Sept. 27, 2000
Concerning George Dille's pension record: Since George died in the Civil War, the pension application was probably filed by his widow. I presume this to be the case with George. Sometimes the information is wrong, but usually the ap gives the date of birth and location - that is, if the information can be remembered by the widow. That is the information needed - if it exists. I have high hopes of tracing this family to the Ohio roots - at the least. Right now it appears to be eastern Ohio, near the counties surrounding the main road cutting across mid Ohio to Richmond, IN (now US 40 and near I-70).
Bob Jordan, Sept. 27, 2000
I guess there are all kind of possibilities on the naming of Joseph Houston Dille. First, the naming him as possible son of Aaron is the 1850 census record naming Houston. Then in 1860, finding a Joseph H. married 1854 in Allen Co. So, there is some speculation here, but good evidence. I really need to find Joseph in 1860 census. His age may be wrong on the 1850 census. Then again, he may have been named after the hero Gen. Houston of the Alamo era, but I think that was 1836? Then again, the spelling of the name could be wrong - there was a Hutchen living next to Jackson Dille in 1860. Then again, he could have been named after his father-in-law. Then again, all of these guesses could be wrong. That's what makes this fun. Also - perhaps finding A.J.'s pension record will give his birth place. Keeping my fingers crossed that Kim will find what we need too.
Bob Jordan, Sept. 27, 2000
I am sorry to say that George's pension records, filed by Nancy do not include his place of birth. Nancy was unable to read or write and included pages taken from the family Bible to prove the birthdate and ages of their children. These Bible records were filled out by George. Apparently she was entitled to $8 a month plus an extra $2 per month for each child under the age of 16. Copies of the Bible records were included in the records I received. They show George's birthdate, December 17, 1819, but not his place of birth or his parents names. Nancy was born June 1, 1822, but again does not list her place of birth or her parents names. It also shows there was another son, Samuel B. Dilley who was born Feb. 21, 1848. He died August 11, 1848. In the 1880 Shelby County Illinois Census it lists Nancy as being deaf, but whether this was from birth I'm not sure. The records also included Letters of Guardianship for James David Dilley (George and Nancy's youngest son). Apparently Thomas J. Fritts was awarded guardianship of James on May 11, 1878. This was the same year Nancy remarried, to one George Hulsapple. Mr. Fritts apparently collected the $2 per month until the following year when James turned 16. By the time of the 1880 Census, James is living with his mother and George Hulsapple again. I wish I could be of more help. If you have any other suggestions I would really appreciate it.

Thanks for the pension notes Kim. It shows Aaron was probably married before that birth date for George. We have more info on Aaron coming one of these days when I can start looking at OH tax records. There definitely will be more on the land records and hopefully some court records. The info on A.J.'s pension record may show something more thanks to Ann. One door closed just means for us to look for other doors to open.

George Washington Dilley descendants
Dear Bob, I find it interesting that you have found these land
records for Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana. I have a copy
of a record on Family Tree Maker that shows George and Nancy's
first born son Aaron was born in Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana
in 1842. I also have a copy of the death certificate of Levi
Oliver Dilley, Aaron's son and it lists his father's birthplace
as Fort Wayne, Indiana. I also have a copy of William Lewis's
death certificate. It does not list his parents names or birthplace.
It shows the information on William Lewis was taken from a welfare
record. It shows he was hit by a train June 15, 1943 at 89 years
of age.
Kim Dilley, Sept. 29, 2000
Kim - I think some of this family's records are starting to come together thanks to you and Ann - at least proving this to be the same Aaron Dille who moved to Allen Co. IN from Jay Co. IN. I noticed that Aaron had a land patent in Allen Co. for 160 acres dated 1850 that has not yet been found as far as the disposition goes. I think all of Aaron's Jay Co. land has been accounted for. Hopefully, there will be some probate deed or court records which mention all of his children. During some of my other families research, I have three cases of elderly men who died when they were hit by trains. I sometimes wonder if these cases were not accidents, but just a way of ending a lonely and hopeless existence.

William Harrison Dillie and George Washington Dilley
Bob, You asked me for some info a while back. William H. Harrison
Dillie was born 4/14/1836 in Jay Co. IN according to his Civil
War pension request. The birth date also matches the 1900 Census.
He died 12/11/1915 according to his funeral card. The widow's
pension request says it was on the 12th instead of the 11th. Angeline
Thornburg, his wife, was born 2/28/1840 in Windsor (Randolph Co.),
IN and died 8/20/1923. I have her obituary. They are both buried
in Union Cemetery which is outside of Windsor. His stone says
Harrison Dillie. My notes show that George Washington Dilley
was born 12/17/1819 in Muskingum Co. OH and that is from "Genealogy
of Ephraim Dilley Clan of Guernsey Co. OH written by Jay D. Andrews.
I show a date of 1997 and p. 35. I still don't have anything
from the national archives.
Ann, Oct. 1, 2000
Ann - The birth date for George is the same Kim mentioned
from the pension papers, but they did not give a birth location.
Unless there is another pension application out there that is
unknown, I would guess Andrews was speculating. In prior posts
to this list, it was shown Dr. Andrews did speculate Aaron Dille
came from the area of Guernsey, Muskingum, and Morgan - which
you have. If this information is in his book, treat it as a good
clue - if there is not a footnote giving the data source.
Everyone have a good Tuesday - the weekend is not far away.
Bob Jordan, Oct. 2, 2000
I did run into Bob Jordan when I was in Indiana at the State Library. I saw that he had signed in early that morning and had to run around asking every man if they were Bob! That is a great place and 2 hours wasn't enough. I have finally finished my Jones project and almost finished Thornburgs (they married my Dillie in Randolph Co. IN) so now I am ready to start entering all my Dillie references in January. I did manage to interview a person I found in the phone book in Winchester, IN whose grandfather Dillie was a brother of my grandfather and sorted out more of
those cousins. I also found another Jay county reference to my elusive Aaron, but same thing, no body knew anything about him except he was the first resident of his township. I am still waiting on the pension and civil war records of AJ Dillie who was William H. Harrison Dillie's brother. I also ordered Harrison's death certificate to get his mother's name, but they still haven't sent it -2 months later. I thought going in person might help since doing it my mail hadn't worked, but I am beginning to doubt that. At least they haven't cashed either check.
Ann Dillie Smart, Dec. 10, 2001
Emily Dille Robinson
My niece gave me your message. I have several questions about
your great grandfather. We may be related. Do you have William's
death certificate? Did it list his mom and dad. I have Emily Dilley's
but it only has a first name for her mother {Mary }. According
to information I have she was born in 1836, in Jay Co., In. Do
you have a month and day William H. was born in 1836. Emily died
in 1918, what year did William die and where is Union Cemetery
located? I have an 1850 Census for Aaron but there's no William
listed. Do you know where William was in 1850? There is a Houston
on the 1850 census, do you know what the other H. stands for in
your William's name? One more question how did you connect William
H. and George W. as brothers? I will be looking forward to hearing
from you. I hope we can make a connection.
Kay, Dec. 29, 2000
William Harrison Dillie
Dear Kay, Thanks for writing. When I first started putting things
in my computer, I didn't know how to show sources. Now I am going
back and adding them. I don't have all my Dillie info in yet so
I'll do my best to answer your questions. His Civil War pension
papers list 12/12/1915 as his death date. I have ordered his death
certificate but it hasn't come yet. I saw it in the Randolph Co.
book several years ago and it listed Aaron as his father. If I
have found the correct notes, it lists Mary Perkins as the mother,
but I will feel better when I see the document, because my hand-written
notes on Mary aren't showing the source and I have seen Mary Parker
listed by others. [Dr. Andrews has an Aaron Dilley married to
Mary Parker in Morgan Co., OH 20 Jan 1824.]
William Harrison Dillie died in the Windsor area of Randolph County, IN Union Cemetery is just outside of Windsor. (this is close to the Delaware County line and near Parker) I did get a copy of his death notice from the Winchester paper. His Civil War pension papers show that he was born in Jay County, IN in 1836. Some place I found that he was born on April 14, 1836, but I need to dig deeper to get that source for you. A cousin copied down that when he died he was 79 years, 9 months and 27 days so that is probably where I got it. He married Angeline Thornburg on Nov. 3, 1860 in Delaware County. He signed some papers as William H.H. Dilley (also spelled Dille and Dillie--my family spells it Dillie now.) He mostly went by Harrison and that is what his tombstone shows. It also spells the last name as Dillie. I have never seen what the other H. stands for but I assume it is for Henry. Bob Jordan who is also researching this line and is on the Dilley list serve has found several of the sisters and brothers. We have noticed that there is an Andrew Jackson Dillie and George Washington Dillie so there seems to be an interest in president's names. I have ordered AJ's Civil War papers and they recently wrote me for a check so hopefully they will be in the mail soon. AJ Dillie was killed in the Civil War as was George Washington Dillie.
The 1860 census, WHH Dilly is living with AJ Dilly and his
wife Manerva in Randolph Co, Nettle Cr. Twp. WHH is 21 at that
time and a farmhand. The 1850 census shows Emily as age 16 and
born in OH. Where did you find her as born in 1836 in Jay Co.?
I haven't found him nor AJ in 1850.
I am on a great Dilley list serve. I think I have some of the
information from Bob Jordan saved. It I do, I'll forward it. You
may want to subscribe too. There is another person working on
George Washington Dillie on the list. I think she lives in IN
and so does Bob. I live in Oregon.
Sincerely,
Ann Dillie Smart, Jan. 1, 2001
AJ and William Harrison Dillie Civil War military records;
Emily Dilley Robertson
I did receive the Civil war military records this week for these
two. A.J.'s showed that his name was Andrew J. Bob Jordan thought
it would be Andrew Jackson so I think he is correct. I also got
the bill for his widow's pension request so hopefully it will
have more of interest when it arrives. AJ was a Corporal in Go.
G, 54 Indiana Infantry. He joined Oct 28, 1862 in Winchester and
mustered in on Nov. 16. It shows him as age 34. He died on Jan
20, 1863 in a hospital in Puducah KY of injuries received in Battle
of Chickasaw Bluff on Dec. 28. In these few papers his name is
spelled: Dilly, Dille, Dills (casualty list has this one!) Tonight
I received William Harrison Dillie's ( he is AJ's brother and
my great-grandfather) He started as a Private in Co. G, 54 Infantry
from Winchester enrolling on Oct 5 1862 and mustering in on Nov.
16 at the age of 22. He became a Sergeant on Aug 20, 1863 and
mustered out at New Orleans on Dec. 8 1863 at age 22. Note that
he was 22 both years and of course he was 21 in the 1860 census
when he lived with his brother AJ! Isn't this fun. I still haven't
received his death certificate. I went in person in Oct to pay
for it and make sure I would get it. They have cashed my check,
but still no death certificate!
I also found a new probable cousin, Kay, and I will insert some what of she sent: "Emily Dilley is my husbands Great-Grandmother. She married Thomas Robertson. They had 8 children.I have a death certificate and a newspaper clipping. She died March 5,1918 in Elwood, IN. According to her death cert., she was born Nov.3,1836 in IN. Her father was listed as Aarron Dillie, born Va. and her mother was Mary unknown. The newspaper clipping said she was born in Jay Co., IN. I have census for 1860-1870-1880 and 1910.Her age doesnt match on any of the census papers. We know they are the right people because of their son who is my husbands grandfather."
Since William Harrison was born according to records I have found about 6 months before his "sister" we know some of these dates are wrong. It's been fun reading everything people have sent. It has really been warm in OR.
Ann Smart, January 8, 2001
Saw your post. Jackson Dille appeared as such on the 1850 Allen Co. census, so his full name was indeed Andrew Jackson. Still looking for death record or pension that may mention maiden name of Aaron's wife. I think we can confirm Aaron's Ohio location if .... Emily did not mention on her death certificate. We need to locate Joseph Huston Dillie in the records and find where he went. Hope your pension record arrives soon and hope it mentions the county of birth. Hopefully,I can get back to the search by March when I retire.
Bob Jordan, Jan. 9, 2001
I live in Madison Co., IN. Is Winchester the county seat of Randolph Co? If so that isn't to far from here. I don't know yet if I want to subscribe to the Dilley list. At the present I don't want my address out to everyone.
On the census papers for Emily it has the following: 1860 Emily-Oh..- 22; 1870 Dilla-25; 1880
Emily-49; ?1910 Emma-54. The 70-80-1910 have her born in Indiana. Quite a difference on her age. I hope this answers some questions. It is a big puzzle.

Joseph Houston Dillie [later we decide he isnt a son
of Aaron]
This man was Joseph Houston Dillie. He was son of Aaron and Mary
Dillie of Jay and Allen Cos., IN. Have not found him on 1860 census
yet, but he is listed on an 1870 Allen Co. index as age 37, born
OH. I will dig that record up next week.
Bob Jordan, Jan. 19, 2001
I found an 1870 index which shows Joseph H. Dillie in Allen Co. IN, age 37 - so will send that next week when I have a chance to look at it.
Bob Jordan, Jan. 21, 2001
Found the following on the 1870 census for Ft. Wayne, 3rd Ward, Allen Co. IN - p.323 (474-324): Joseph H. Dille 37, ARTIST, born OH, Elizabeth 35 IN, Joseph 10 IN, Morton 4 IN.
Houston Dillie, age 17, was in Aaron Dillie's household in Allen Co. 1850. Joseph H. Dillie m. Elizabeth Hedges Feb. 23, 1854 in Allen Co. I could not find Joseph in 1860 Allen Co. - or 1880 Ft. Wayne area, but have only completed half of the 1880 Allen Co. search. I knew I should have responded to the e-mail below - anyone with info?
ìHi folks, Just received a tad bit more info on Ralph
Dille, two more emails. Does anyone claim him??
#1: I found his obituary at the library today. The painting was
done in 1926 and he died on 6-6-37. He was the son of Louis Dille,
a French painter. I do some research on important pieces that
we have up for auction in Fort Wayne for Wiegmann Auctioneers.
Any information is appreciated!! Thanks, Tim McCulloch
#2: Actually, his father was Joseph, not Louis as I stated
in my last email. If you know any Dilles' that might be interested
in bidding on this painting, the auction is in 3 weeks here in
Fort Wayne. Thanks for your time, Tim McCulloch

AJ (Andrew Jackson) Dille and his widow Minerva Finch Dille
Way to go Bob! We may never figure out who our Aaron Dillie ties
to but it is fun to trace all of his children. I received Andrew
J. Dille's widow's pension papers this week. Not to much that
will help us. Her name was Minerva Finch before she married Andrew.
She has no children under the age of 16 in 1863 so I assume they
had no children since the 1860 census did not show any. There
is a copy of her marriage certificate. They were married on Sept.
5, 1847 in Wayne County, IN. The clerk of the court was the witness.
She received a pension of $8.00/month starting in 1863. The rest
I had sent earlier. He died in Paduch KY of injuries received
at the Battle of Vicksburg (Chickasaw Bluffs). I remember my
dad (Ed Dillie) taking me to Vicksburg when I was 6. Now I wonder
if he knew that his great uncle was killed there and his grandfather
fought there. Oh how I wish that people were still here so I could
ask the un-asked questions! I forget where the other brother (George
Washington Dillie) was killed during the war. I spent the Christmas
holidays in NC helping my husband with his research. (He is lucky
all of his lines go
back before the Revoluntionary War in two adjacent counties in NC! The Dillie's sure liked to move more!) As I did some work for him with the 1860 and then the 1870 census in those two counties, I was really struck by the numbers of women heading households in 1870 (about half) and the number of sisters in their 20's living together with no husbands. I had always read about the terrible loses in the Civil War, but that experience plus looking at the loss of two of the three Dillie brothers has really brought it home to me.

Allen Co. --Louis Dilley, Mary E. Dillie Weber and Joseph
H. Dillie
Found while in the Allen Co. IN 1860 census - Pleasant Twp., Ft.
Wayne P.O., p.705 (421-422): Louis P. Dilley 56 OH, Cooper (barrel
maker), Catherine 33 PA, Mary E. ? OH, Fanny E. Weber 2 IN. Any
connection?
Bob Jordan, Jan. 25, 2001
For Ann and others: Looking over my records and found an error - Joseph H. Dillie married Caroline Hedges 1854 Allen Co. IN - not Elizabeth Hedges. Elizabeth was his wife in 1870 - may be, or may not be same woman. I will continue search.
Andrew Jackson Dillie: From Ann's note, I take it A.J. was mortally wounded at the battle of Vicksburg. Does the pension give a date of death? I think there was a long siege concerning that battle and I need to look up the dates. Any birth date or place mentioned? His brother George W. Dillie was killed in GA the same year. Appears they were in different regiments? There are also regiment histories available on line. Need to also find Minerva Dillie's (A.J.'s wife) location in 1870, if possible. For the near future - I plan to look at Ohio tax records where Aaron Dillie might have been before 1832. I will take a list of neighbors with me from the 1840 census and land records of Jay Co. IN. If I see anything promising, I will dig into any land and court records. There is plenty of same to be done for those children we know.
There was also one other marriage in Allen Co. IN concerning Benjamin Weber and Mary E. Dillie 1854. I did not find Benjamin Weber in any IN index - or in Allen Co. 1860. Benjamin Weber was listed 1850 Allen Co. in Adams Twp. page 471 - age 24, lawyer, born NY, living with Norman Weber 28 NY, Peter Weber 24 NY and Emily Finkham 18 OH. So above Mary E. Dillie was probably born about 1834 +- a few years. Nothing more known about her.

A.J. Dille; Emily Dilley Robertson
Bob, Both the pension request and the military records show that
Andrew J was a Corporal in Co. G, 54 Indiana Infantry. He joined
Oct 28, 1862 in Winchester and mustered in on Nov. 16. Military
record shows him as age 34. He died on Jan 20, 1863 in a hospital
in Puducah, KY of injuries received in Battle of Chickasaw Bluff
on Dec. 28. (Pension request says he died on Jan. 14, but both
agree on place he died and place he was wounded.) He and Harrison
mustered in on the same day and were in the same company. Minerva
filed for the pension on June 22, 1863. Unfortunately no birth
date or place mentioned, just the wedding information. Thanks
for your additional information.
I also received more information on the sister Emily. "On the census papers for Emily it has the following: 1860 Emily-Oh..- 22; 1870 Dilla-25; 1880 Emily-49; ?1910 Emma-54. The 70-80-
1910 have her born in Indiana. Quite a difference on her age. I hope this answers some questions. It is a big puzzle." I look forward to the next pieces of this puzzle.
Ann Dillie Smart, Jan. 27, 2001
Kay, Yes Winchester is the county seat of Randolph Co. I think I told you that I grew up in Anderson. I graduated from Madison Heights in 1965 and Ball State in 1969. I have been in Oregon since 1973. I make it back about once a year. I have lots of Aunts and Uncles on my mother's side in Madison Co.
My great grandfather and my grandfather are both buried at Union Cemetery in Randolph County. You go to Parker and then turn (south I think) towards Windsor. You go on through Windsor and turn south again to get to Union. Most of Harrison's children are buried there except one is buried between Farmland and Winchester. Windsor where Harrison lived is really close to the Delaware Co. line. My dad is buried at Brookside in Lapel which is where all of my mother's family is. Talk to you later. Thanks for all the info.
Ann Dillie Smart, Jan 27, 2001
Ann, Thank you for sending me the Dilley family information. I noticed Bob Jordan was looking for A. J. Dillie's wife Minerva in 1870. I found Minerva Dilley 1870 Wayne Co., IN., she was 41; B: IN. There could be more on the actual census. I also found a Joseph Dille 1860, 27 an artist, born OH, Elizabeth 25 born IN and Joseph R. 5 mos. born IN. He was in Elkhart Co.,Goshen P.O., IN. I hope this will help. I'm still looking for Emily in 1900 census. I havent decided about the list yet.
Kay, Jan. 29, 2001
This makes sense for Minerva since she and A. J. were married in Wayne Co. She probably went back to her family after the war.
Ann Dillie Smart, Jan. 29, 2001
I will confirm the following. Will also look at 1900 soudex when I have a chance. Many thanks.

There's a lot of work to be done in Allen Co. IN. There are the deed records and a remote possibility of finding graves. The plat map of where these people lived may give us grave sites. I am hoping an obit might be found in one of the newspapers which would give a clue to Aaron's origin. There's enough research in Ohio to give clues back one or two more generations. Just need to know where to look. We can almost be certain that Joseph Dillie's first wife was buried at the same location as his parents. We know Joseph Jr. was in the same area when he died (the
painting). So, it is important to try and find his descendants - if any. They could have this information. Might take me several more weeks to be able to travel to Ft. Wayne, so any clues between now and then will help. The obits concerning Joseph's wife may help break this impass. We also have Joe Jr's death date.

1880 IN Census including Joseph H. Dille, William Harrison

Had some extra time today and found the following concerning Joseph
H. Dille, Harrison Dillie, and Emily Dillie Robinson, children
of Aaron and Mary Dillie of Jay and Allen Cos. IN from the 1880
census.
1880 Allen Co. IN, Wayne Twp., p.450, June 3 (7-7): Joseph H. Dille 47, Artist, OH-OH-OH, Elizabeth H. 45, IN-NY-NY, wife, Martin O. 14, IN-OH-IN, son, Bessie L. 8 OH-OH-OH, daughter. Elizabeth is second wife of Joseph - her maiden name unkown at the moment. On the next page (451), Mary E. Weber, listed as mother 49, OH-OH-PA, and Catherine Dillie 72, widow, PA-PA-PA - listed as grandmother. This was household (29-30). Not sure who is the mother and grandmother of who here. The previous household (28-29) listed James Wright 48 NJ, gardener, Mary J. Wright 43, widow, sister-in-law, PA, Charlotte Daily 20 boarder OH-PA-PA, Thomas Daily 21,boarder IN-PA-IN, George Daily 2, son, IN-IN-OH, B--- W. Stiner 19, single, servant, IN. The Catherine Dillie is obviously the widow of Louis Dillie, and Mary E. Dillie Weber (daughter of Louis) is the one who married Benjamin Weber 1854 Allen Co. Joseph Dillie and Catherine Dillie are living so close that it would be a hugh coincidence if they were not related. So, if we can find the origin of Louis Dillie, then we may also find Aaron Dillie as a brother or close cousin.

Bob Jordan, Feb. 7, 2001
Thanks Bob. I had the Randolph Co ones. Oliver is Oliver P. M. and is son of William Harrison Dillie. He had a large family some of which still lives in Randolph Co. He is buried at Union. William C. is the oldest son of William H. and I think was actually born in 1863 before Harrison left for the Civil War. He is buried in Randolph Co. in a cemetery between Farmland and Winchester. Issac S. always went by his middle name, Sherman. He was named after the general that William Harrison fought with. Issac S. and George neither married, lived long lives, and are both buried together in Union Cem. Clifford from the 1880 census was probably dead by 1900. He was listed as dead in his mother's obituary. Herbert (Thomas Herbert) had probably moved to Granite City IL by the 1900 census. He lived a long life, had children and is buried there. Edward E. was a stationary engineer. He was my grandfather and built the roads in Gary, IN and other places. Legend has it that he went to CA before 1900 and earned enough money in logging camps to buy his steam powered machine. I have a picture of the machine. He died in Anderson in 1924 when my dad Edward V. was 9. William Harrison's wife Angeline is one of those thousands of Thornburgs in Randolph Co. Three Quaker brothers came from NC and had lots of kids!

Joseph H. Dille is the son of Louis not Aaron
We need to scratch the name of Joseph H. Dillie as possible son
of Aaron Dillie. The census pages I found yesterday indicated
he belonged to Louis Dille (Dilie). So today, I went to the Dilley
census site and found following: 1850 Stark Co. OH, Perry twp.
Louis P. Dilley 47 OH, Cath. 43 PA, Mary 20 OH, Joseph 18 OH.
Since Louis was born about 1802-03 in Ohio, a connection to his
parents may be available. Stark Co. is in NE Ohio, not far from
the PA line. Perry Twp. is just west of Canton. Stark Co. derived
from Columbiana Co. in 1808. Anyone with information concerning
the Stark Co. OH Dilleys?
Bob Jordan, Feb. 8, 2001
Maybe Louis and Aaron are connected. I always wondered about Joseph since he wasn't named for a president like George Washington Dillie, Andrew Jackson Dillie and William H. Harrison Dillie!
Ann Feb. 10, 2001
There was a need to separate or connect the two Allen Co. IN families of Dillie-Dilley. So, this has been done. Perhaps or perhaps not there is a connection with the Aaron Dille family of Jay-Allen Co. IN. Right now, it appears there is not. From the Dilley data site - Lewis Dilla m. Catherine Hartsman Aug. 9, 1827 Starks Co. OH. The 1840 census listed him in Starks Co. Found in an index of 1830 Cuyahoga Co. OH was Lewis P. Dille, but I was out of time to complete this lookup. He was missed on the Dilley census site, but others listed there were named as sons of either David Jr. or Asa. Lewis P.was listed on same page as Jacob L. from Euclid. I would think Lewis' family took the northern route directly into the Ft. Wayne, IN area between 1850-54, and Aaron Dillie took the U.S. 40 route from Ohio into the Richmond, IN area in 1834. I will follow up on the 1830 Lewis P. record to make sure of above.

William Harrison Dillie
Do you have the 1910 census for your Dillie family? If not, let
me know and I will pass it along. I need to look it up anyway
to confirm. Any page #s, etc? If not, I will scan thru the census.
Believe it or not, we are making progress. I'm anxious to dig
those deeds out of the Ft. Wayne library, plus any cemetery and
obits that might help.
Bob Jordan, Feb. 10, 2001
I haven't done any 1910 census work. In 1920, Oliver was in Monroe Twp Parker City and so was William C. Angeline was living with George in Stoney Creek Twp. All those were in Randolph Co. Edward was in Madison Co. Anderson Twp. If you want the details on them from those census records I can send that. Herbert would have been in Granite City, IL, but I don't have his. Isaac Sherman was dead by then. In 1910 I would start with Stoney Creek twp and then Parker City. My grandparents, Edward E. Dillie and Emma Jones were married Aug 28, 1911 in Parker so I assume that Edward would have been with his parents in 1910 unless he was off working a job.
These are some notes from my father that I made in the early 1970's: "Edward E. Dillie went to work in a factory at the age of 13 and took off for California at 14 where he worked in the forests. He got there by riding the freight cars. He brought enough money back to buy a steam powered thresher. When Emma and Ed were first married, they lived in Gary, IN when it was a
new city and Edward E. put in the streets. Then they moved to Green Castle, IN and he met Tom Stilwell. He went to work for Stilwell at the gravel pit in Orestes [Madison Co.] where Edward Vernon Dillie [my dad] was born. Then he moved to Muncie and worked for the light company. Stilwell came for him and had him open the Anderson gravel plant where he worked until he died of Brights disease. He had had some strokes before he died. If penicillin had existed, he probably would have lived because it could have treated the kidney infection."
I know at some point he worked in OH so it is hard to tell where he was in 1910! I have Edward E.'s obituary from the Anderson paper. He died April 5, 1924 in Anderson, IN. He was survived by his wife and son and three brothers, Oliver and William of Parker City IN and Herbert of Granite City, IL.
Angeline Thornburg died Aug 20, 1923. Her obituary says that she had nine children. Clifford, Johnie, Sherman, George, an infant daughter and her husband all proceeded her in death thus leaving William, Oliver, Herbert and Edwin [Edward] to mourn her. The obituary is the actual newspaper clipping that my grandmother had saved in her Bible so I don't know what paper it is from. I suspect the Muncie Paper. I found a copy of William Harrison's in the Winchester paper but it was tiny. If you have access to the Muncie paper, I would love to see if they have a copy of his. He died December 11, 1915 in Parker City, Randolph Co., IN. My father never mentioned Johnie nor the infant daughter. I don't think he knew they existed.
I show Isaac Sherman born 11-9-1866 and died 11-21-1916. He owned a store in Windsor and I have his desk. I show Thomas Herbert born 7-9-1873 and died 2-21-1967 in Granite City IL. He is buried in Sunset Hill cemetery in Edwardsville, IL. His daughter-in-law told me that he worked in a steel mill. His wife was Mayetta Van Landingham. I interviewed his daughter-in-law four years ago in her Granite City home. She was in her mid 90's. His grandson who is a retired principal sent me information on all of Herbert's family.
I looked up the cemetery for William C.F. Dillie It is the Old Maxville Cemetery which is between Farmland and Winchester just off of highway 32. The picture of his headstone shows him born 1862 and died 1939. I have more details someplace. His wife Pearl G. (1876-1951) is buried with him as is his son Kenneth. Kenneth had purchased the lots. My dad said William's daughter Fern (I assume this is the Mildred of the 1900 census) moved to CA and he didn't know her married name. There are other Dillie's buried at Maxville, but they are children and grandchildren of Oliver P.M. I talked to one of Oliver's grandsons when I was in Winchester this fall and he identified all the other Dillie's in the cemetery for me, but he didn't know who William, Pearl and Kenneth were.
I wish I had my box of Dillie things organized and into the computer. I think I have all of Oliver and Herbert's descendants. I'm the only one for Edward E. since my father was an only child and so was I. I have finished all my Jones work and I am almost through with the Thornburgs.
Ann Dillie Smart, Feb. 11, 2001
Then I will put that 1910 census on my list. You have given me enough on your family to know about where to look. The library here does not have a soundex for 1910 IN, so some of this might have to wait until my Ft. Wayne trip. I think it is important to have all of they records - and they might bring a few surprises. So, we shall see. I haven't given up on a possible connection with Louis yet. There were Aarons connected to that branch also, but ours were farmers and Louis was listed as working in a "lab" in 1850.

Very interesting. I'm sure that Thomas H. Dille is Thomas Herbert. Must have been before he moved to Granite City, IL. His daughter-in-law told me he worked in the Steel Mills and came to Granite City when that work ran out in IN. She also added like all the other Welsh. She was about 96 when I interviewed her in 1996 in Granite City. So does the name after their name indicate a wife? I wonder if Edward is my grandfather and if there was a wife before my grandmother? Interesting thought. On the other hand he would have only been 16 in 1893 so this could be another Edward. W. Harrison is my great-grandfather and his wife Angeline was often called Ann. Wm C. is probably the oldest son and Isaac S the next oldest (Isaac Sherman). No idea who Jas is. Thanks Bob.
Ann, Feb. 21, 2001
Yes, I think the name attached is a wife. Might provide a clue, but this information was provided by a door to door representative of the directory company and he copied much as a census taker would do. I do remember back in the 1950-60s that putting your name, wife, place of employment was the right thing. There were no problems with someone trying to steal your identity. I called and made a date with my first girl friend by knowing her address - didn't know her last name. I never told her how I found that information - it was magic. What is interesting about the Muncie directory is it gives addresses - the James was listed same house as the others. I am sure there are other year directories out there for Muncie. Should be able to track the moves.

Civil War, George Washington Dille, and other descendants
of Aaron
Ann, I ran across some data on Aaron Dille in Jay County 1830-40
from you. I am trying to find out if Aaron and Mary Dille are
the parents of George W. Dille b. 17 dec 1819 in Muskingham Co,
Ohio. I have all of George's Family but cannot connect him to
Aaron Dille who were together in Allen Co, Indiana in 1850. Have
some of Aaron and Mary's children from Jay County.
1830's. Also found daughter Emily from Allen County with death certificate stating Aaron and Mary her parents. Sisters Margaret and Elizabeth marrying Reck brothers in Jay Co. in 1842 moving to Spencer County Indiana in 1850's. George followed them there in 1860's then on to Shelby County, Illinois where he joined union army and died at Battle of Chicamauga, Georgia in 1863. Buried in Chattanooga National Cemetery in unmarked grave. Cannot find where Aaron or Mary are buried or death dates. Maybe we could help each other.

Charles, Are you familiar with the Dilley list serve through Rootsweb? There are several of us trying to find this Aaron Dille family. I will forward you some of the information I have sent people and that they sent me, but I don't think I kept the early messages about George W. on my hard drive. There is another woman working on him who lives in IN. Bob Jordan is working on one of the daughters and I have met another woman on the internet who is working on Emily. My line is William H. Harrison Dillie son of Aaron and Mary Dille of Jay Co. His brother was Andrew Jackson Dillie who also died in the Civil War. They served together and AJ was killed at Vicksburg. We think George Washington is also their brother and that all 3 were named for presidents. Some of what I will forward you will show a possible 4th brother without a president's name but we have ruled him out.
I think what I will send you will have the list serve address and I encourage you to subscribe. I will just forward stuff an probably won't write any other notes with them. There is a way to search old items on the list serve and you might be able to find the other person who is working on George W. I know she has his Civil War records. I have AJ and Wm. Harrison's.

Bob Jordan March 24, 2001
Thanks Bob. I'm glad you found all of these children of William Harrison Dillie. Oliver's child that you have a question mark by is Omer. I actually went to his home once. He settled near Anderson. I talked to one of Valmond's son's when I was in Winchester in Oct. My dad only listed Fern and Kenneth as children of William so that may have been all for them. Kenneth is buried beside his folks with no wife. My dad said that Fern married and moved to CA. That is all he knew of her. Mark Jones isn't related to Emma Jones, but that was a good thought.
George Washington Dille
I heard from a woman, Nancy Barker, who is working on George Washington
Dillie, but my email gets rejected when I try sending them to
her. I don't know what is wrong with her address. She wrote "The
George Dille you are talking about that was killed at the battle
of Chicamauga is
buried in a cemetery in Shelbyvile Illinois. along side his second wife Rebecca Valentine Dille. I have been researching My Great Grandmothers family (Rebecca) I do believe these Dilles must have come from Virginia. I have sent a letter of inquiry to the Virginia Genealogical Society.î
ìI have looked and looked through your records of the Dilleys and could never connect any of the Dillys I'm related to. They settled here in Shelby County about 1850's. George W. Dille had 6 boys and 2 girls, one of the girls was named America Mildred Dilley. She was born in April 13, 1857 in Rockport, Spenser Co., IN. Married in Shelby County, Illinois to Thomas Jefferson Evans. These Dilleys were well educated and preached the Bible. I believe they were Methodists. Although my Great Grandmother's family were Lutheran. My mother said she often used the word "catafe" for potato. We didn't know what country that word comes from. I was feeling very left out until I read the court records of Jay IN. Aaron is mentioned as well as his wife. George Dille's wife Nancy Hughs comes from Virginia, she was born there on June 1, 1822. Mary's surname is not on my records, perhaps she was a Miller. I have spent 4 hours going through your records . I finally hit pay dirt. I feel sure they were probably some of the first settlers ."
Thanks again for sharing.

Aaron in OH possible Aaron Jr.
Ann, Want to thank you for all the info on Aaron and family. I
have a lot of information on Aaron and son George W. because I
been to Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania searching for this Dille family.
Only thing I have that you don't seem to have is land records
from Belmont County, Ohio. I have two records on Aaron, one from
14 April 1818 Mead twp. Belmont Co, Ohio in which Aaron Dille
bought 10 acres from Richard Dille. Then have record of Aaron
Dille Junior and wife Mary from Morgan County, Ohio selling the
same 10 Acres on 15 May 1834. This tells me our Aaron is a Junior
which makes his father Senior, follow me. I believe Aaron was
actually born in Washington County, Pennsylvania which was considered
Virginia in late 1790. In The Dille Family book 300 years in America,
on page77, you'll see Aaron Dille b 1776 (close to 1780) son of
Aaron b 1742 of NJ. Notice Richard above.
It does not list Aaron juniors family but look at brothers
Moses, John, Ichabod, Squire, Richard. These same men bought land
in Belmont Co, Ohio early 1800. Follow me..... Also check page
34 same book. I believe Aaron is of this family. I can send the
two land records if you wish. Remember I believe our Aaron is
a Aaron Jr. which helps a lot. Thanks Again for your help
please let me know what you think of this. Charles (Chuck) Dilley.
If you which you can send this on to Bob and others, Would appreciate
any help from you all.

George Washington Dille
Dear Ann, Would the Charles Dilley you are corresponding with
happen to be from Taylorville, Illinois? If he is, I have been
corresponding with him also and since he lives so close we are
hoping to get together soon and share and exchange what we have.
He has a picture of my husbands 4th great grandfather, George
W and his wife Rebecca Valentine and I can't wait to see it! He
seems like a wonderful man who has done extensive research. As
you know my father in law originally asked me to research his
family tree for him. Because of his age and health concerns I
have really felt pressure to get this done quickly and have been
working on it for 2 years. With four children in school and a
home daycare I am lucky to get to use the computer sometimes let
alone get to court houses etc. Almost everything I have done has
been by computer or mail. Have been to a few cemeteries in the
Pana area, looking for tombstones etc. trying to verify dates.
My girls actually find this quite fun if the weather is nice.
Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for the wealth of information
you have given me, it is greatly appreciated.
Kimberly, March 27, 2001
Kim, these are the deed copies sent to me by Charles Dille. He didn't say where he lived so you can see if this email address matches the one you are in touch with. He was ok sharing with you two. I hope we can get him to join the list serve. I'm so glad I found you two on it. If you ever scan in the picture of George Washington that he is going to share with you, I'd love to have a copy. I'm glad all the work Bob and I have done has helped you. I have so much to enter in the computer and am years behind what I have collected. I really appreciate what Bob has sent. In a few years when I retire, I might get all this organized. I really want to scan in pictures. I have some Dillie tin types. But I am afraid to start that project before I get caught up with this one.
Ann Dillie Smart, March 27, 2001
I hope you do get the project done for your father-in-law. It is really nice of you to do it. I forget what part of IN you live in? I make it to Indianapolis and Anderson about once a year. Since my dad died, I don't have as big a motivation to come to the midwest.
Most of all, I hope you are getting your father-in-law to tell you stories about his growing up years, his parents, your husband as a child, etc. I wish I had done more of that before my parents died. Your children will really appreciate it if you do get some stories from him. I saw a new paperback book to help write family histories the other day. I think it was called Legacy, but I'm not sure. It looked really good. Gave lots of ideas of questions to ask.
I met Bob in the Indiana State Library when I was back in Oct. That was a lucky fluke. I had 2 hours to go to the library in and when I signed in, I saw that Bob Jordan had signed in early that day. I went around to every man in the place and said "Excuse me, are you Bob?" I felt kind of wierd, but it was fun meeting him.
I heard recently from a Nancy Barker, but her email address keeps getting rejected. She is also related to George Washington. If you ever hear from her, please send me her address. I feel rude not replying to her.
Ann Dillie Smart, March 27, 2001
Charles seems to have answered my questions on the census records - and they DO fit our Aaron. I will follow up with names of the 1830 neighbors with the names I have noted in early Jay Co. next. If some do, then we have great evidence. So, this is the path to follow right now, and I will try my best to add more information. I was not able to open the attachments. Is there a way to copy and paste into an e-mail? I will be getting a "real" computer in about a month - complete with scanner.

Elizabeth Dille b 1822; OH land records for Aaron
Bob, I was wondering how much you have on the Wm. Reck family?
I've made a couple of trips to Spencer County Indiana and have
some records. Believe William & Elizabeth died in Wabash County
Illinois but have never went there to research. Have some census
records, marriage, birth and death records from Spencer Countyon
the Recks.
Also wrote out land transactions from them. Here is land trans. from Belmont Co.
(1)1818 b between Richard Dille Mead twp Bel. Co. & Rachel wife and Aaron Dille junr. same place 40 dollars in hand to them paid by Aaron NE corner of NE quarter section 30 twp 4 range contain 10 acres. Chuck, March 28, 2001
Chuck Dilley sent me two deeds concerning Aaron Dillie Jr. The first was dated 14 April 1818 - Richard Dille and Racheal, his wife, of Mead Twp., Belmont Co. OH to Aaron Dille Jr. of same - 10 acres in Mead Twp. which was a US Patent to Richard Dille dated 27 July 1814. Signed by Richard and Racheal Dile, Witnesses were Polly Jones and Phebe (x) Parker.
Second deed - dated 15 May, 1834, Aaron Dille and his wife Mary of Morgan Co. OH to Robert McKelvey of Belmont Co. OH - 10 acres in Mead Twp., Belmont Co. which was US Patent to Richard Dille 27 July 1814 and conveyed to Aaron Dille on 14 April 1818 and by him conveyed to Robert McKelvey. Signed by Aron Dille and Mary (x) Dilley. John Hammond, acting Justice of the Peace, State of Ohio, Muskingum Co., acting for county aforesaid - certifies 15 day of May, 1834, before me appeared Aaron Dile and Mary his wife... Entered Nov 17, 1834, recorded 18th.
This confirms Aaron Jr's move from Belmont to Morgan Co. OH. On the 1820 Belmont Census, Aaron appears age 26-45 (born 1775-94). On the 1830 Morgan Co. Census, Aaron appears as age 40-50 (born 1780-90). Thus between the two census records, he was born 1780-90. The children's age ranges may indicate he married about 1806. We have reason to believe this Aaron Jr. may be the same who moved to Jay Co. IN right after the land was sold. There was a marriage record for Aaron Dillie to Mary Parker 20 Jan 1824 Morgan Co. If this is the same Aaron Jr., then he was married a prior time (1806?). I see that some information states Aaron was born 1776, so the question comes up - how was this year recorded as his birth year? Aaron's father was of course Aaron Sr. of Belmont Co. OH. who died 1822. Are there any estate, etc. records which show this death year? Supposedly, Aaron Sr. married a Lydia (Fletcher?) and was divorced from her 1816 Belmont Co. - then married Nancy Cree-Cue 1818. Anyone with documents on this? Some say Aaron Sr. was born about 1742 Morris Co. NJ. - any thoughts on that date? Any possibe names for children of Aaron Jr. who remained behind in Morgan Co.? Has anyone any knowledge if there are tax records available for Morgan and Belmont?
Many questions here, but I hope someone does have some answers. And the search goes on.
Bob Jordan, March 29, 2001
Aarons possible descendants
Chuck, I have many questions (of course) concerning the information
that was sent on Aaron of Morgan. I have compared all of the census
records from 1820-50 and have come up with the following (need
to discount Aaron's age in 1850 right now):
Aaron Dille (born 1790-94), wife (1790-94) Children (?) -
1. male born 1806-10
2. fem. b. 1806-10
3. fem. b. 1810-20
4. male b.1810-20 - George ? b.1819
5. fem. b.1820-25 - Eliz.? b.c.1822
6. fem. b.1820-25 - Margaret? - c.1825
7. fem. b.1825-30 - Sarah ? - c.1830-31
8. male b. 1825-30 - A.J. ? - c.1827
9. fem. b. 1835-40
10. fem. b. 1835-40
11. male 1835-40 - Wm. H. ? - 1835
This does not leave any room for Huston Dillie age 15-17 in 1850 census. Two of the census records indicate Aaron was born 1790 or after. The chart above gives a marriage estimate of about 1806, so if true, Aaron and wife were married quite young. If we take the 1850 age as close to the truth, then Mary was age 65 and her last child born when she was age 50. Not impossible, but unlikely. Then, there is a possibility that the children 1-2-3 which show on the 1820 census were children by a brother, sister or in-law. Is there any indication that Aaron's marriage to Nancy Cue - Cree in 1818 was the Sr. or Jr.? Estate records, etc.? There is enough doubt here to state some of the census age records are wrong. Was Aaron really born 1776 (haven't seen any proof of that)? This is all based on the speculation (for now) that Aaron of Morgan Co. OH and Jay Co. IN are the same - and there's a good chance. Any thoughts on what I have sent?
Bob Jordan, March 29, 2001
Bob,
Have you ruled out Emily Dille Robertson? I think she is probably one of the later girls. Her records show Aaron and Mary as parents according to Kay.
Ann, April 2, 2001
Ann,
No, she would be #9 or #10 - if true. Must have been half asleep
when Iwrote that - couple of mistakes there.

Chuck Dilley to Bob Jordan, March 30, 2001
Ann,
Thank you for the information and the land records. Ive been
so busy I just got your e-mails. I saw the name Kimberly Dilley
on one of the messages. How is she related ? I corresponded with
Chuck Dilley before I had a computer. We exchanged information,
I sent him info on Emily Dilley. I came across an article from
a Illinois newspaper. I wonder if Chuck could check it out.
Allen Co. Democrat Jan. 1870
Probate Ct. of Allen Co. IL.
Final Account of C.M.Townsend, adm. of Aaron Dilley, deceased.
Hearing on Monday Feb. 7,1870.
Wondering who this Aaron is ? Let me know if he has any ideas
about this.
Thanks
Kay, April 1, 2001
P.S. I have the book Chuck Dilley referred to.
Ann & Kay,
I keep referring to the Dille Book 300 years but believe it might help us if our line follows David Dille b. 1718, Aaron Dille b. 1742 Aaron Dille b. 1776(1780) On Page 23, 3/4 down, Washington county Pa. was not established until 1781 and official records were not kept before this time. Virginia claimed all this area and held courts here from 1775 to 1790, when they withdrew. Page 21 states son Aaron b. 1742 joined father and brothers in Washington county after Revolutionary war after 1776. Which would make our Aaron b. 1776-80 born in Virginia. Hope you can follow this. Just speculation on my part........... read pages 21 thru 35 to Israel and I believe this is our migration west from NJ. thru Washington county Pa. (VA) Belmont County Ohio to Jay Co, Indiana to Allen County Indiana.......
