Not Made. His many friends in this city and surrounding counrty
were pained to hear of the death of Mr. Mathias J. Fischbach,
which occurred at the family home in East Dyersville this morning,
at 8:45 o'clock. Death followed after an illness covering a period
of five years. He was able to be up and around, until six weeks
ago when he was obliged to go to bed and he gradually grew weaker
and peacefully passed away, well fortified with the sacraments
of the Catholic church of which he has been a faithful member.
Mr. Fischbach was born at Bissen, Luxemburg, Germany, on February
26, 1852 and received his early education in his native village.
At the age of sixteen years, in the spring of 1868, he and his
father came to this country landing at Fort Washington, and later
came to Dubuque county, settling at St. Donatus. In the year 1872,
he came to Dyersville, and this city has been his home ever since.
On May 10, 1874, Mr. Fischbach was married to Miss Anna Schieder
of New Vienna, the ceremony being performed in St. Francis church,
the late Rev. Father Kortenkamp officiating, after which they
went to housekeeping here. Mr. Fischbach followed the carpenter
trade in his younger days and later accepted a position with the
National Importing Co. and later travelled on the road for the
concern, having been connected up with the business over twenty
five years. Eleven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Fischbach,
nine of whom are living: Margaret and Nicholas died in infancy
and those surviving are Andrew of Herman, MN; Mrs. H.C. Dettmann
of Dyersville; Mrs. George Huberty of Dyersville; Fred and Bert
