Dear Sandra, 31 July 1999
I have been struggling to update my census records on some of the descendents of John Dilley Jr. b 1774. I have tried to make the census records for Abner readable for l850 and 1860. Abner had a family before the 1850 census which was further enlarged by the time of the 1860 census. Some of the childrens names are unusual and hard to spell correctly. There is confusion about Albert in the 1870 census, but in 1900, Abner age 84 was living with his daughter Armisetta age 61she was born in 1839 apparently. The two boys living with Abner in 1900 were probably grandsons.
I have much greater problems with James Dilley whose parentage is not clear to me. Was he a son of John Dilley Jr.? He married Delilah Hall and had a family mostly gone from home by 1850 census. She died and James married Susanna Whittington in 1849. Separating the children is difficult and most of them were already gone from the famiily. By 1860 James had a new family by Susannah. I would like to have their families.
I am sending copies of a 3 page census record set that also includes some VA born Dilleys of other clans. If you know someone who has the families of James Dilley on record, I would appreciate if you would inform them or send me their address.
I wouldi ask for one more service you could provide for me. I do not have email facility, and I do not have names and addresses for most of the 64 Dilley searchers in Teddys group. Jack R. Saylor who is searching the Asa Dille clan of the David Dille group, has the wrong birth year for Asa Sr. In an affidavit by Asa to support David Dille Jr.s application for a war pension, Asa states that he was born in 1767 and that he was 9 years old then. David and his sons moved from Morris Co., NJ to Washington Co., PA in the fall of 1776. I have a copy of this affidavit which I could send to Jack if I had his address. If you could notify him by email, he could then write me with his information. Or you could probably give me his mail address when and if you answer this letter. Thank You!
Sincerely yours,
Jay D. Andrews

Notes: The Dilleys in the above counties o-f Morgan, Licking,
Muskingum and Lawrence in Ohio appear to belong to the Virginia
clans. However, Absolem in Morgan Co. was a grandson of Ephraim
Sr. of Guernsey Co. These Ohio census records were obtained through
the Ohio Census Research service which was operated until 1 July
1989 by a young lawyer. There are such large descrepancies between
ages of some families in 1850 and 1860 censuses that without agematching
children I would have decided that they were different families.
I dont know how accurate this census copier was, but obviously
some of the names are not accurate.
After reading many censuses, I understand the problems. Aaron,
age 70 and his wife Mary age 60 in Allen Co., IN, were old enough
to be one of the earliest Dilley families in Virginia. He and
Stephen b 1781 (Lawrence Co., IN clan) and Moses born 1794 (Morgan
Co., Ohio clan) could be relatives of VA Dilleys John, Joseph
& Richard who moved to Washington Co., Ohio before 1810. Aaron
was old enough to have been father of several of the younger Dilleys
in Ohio counties in 1850. Obviously, Aaron lived in Ohio before
moving to Indiana. I found Aaron in Jay Co., IN during the 1840
census. It is useful to study the location of counties
in Ohio and Indiana because southern counties along the Ohio River
were settled almost a generation earlier than northern counties.
Note the biblical names of Luke and Moses, John and James, and,
Joseph and Jonathan in this Virginia Dilley clan. They could also
be considered solid English names.
