John Dilley, Jr. b. 13 May 1774 Powell's Fort on Passage Creek, Shenandoah Co., VA. m. Elizabeth Acklin 24 Dec 1794 Bath Co., VA

John was the son of John/Johannes Dille who arrived in Maryland in 1762.

The last mention that I've found regarding John Dilley, Jr. is located in the Greenbrier Co., VA court records:

26 Sep 1809: Solomon Taylor vs. John McCarty[?] on motion for bonding John Dilley in the public trial of this county who was charged in execution at the
suit of McCarty. Samuel Kincaid Sheriff of this county produced in court an account of commonwealth for paying guards for conveying John Dilley to the
jail of this county, who was charged with a felony.

John's wife, Elizabeth, took her children and moved to Lawrence Co., OH. What happened to John?

I still have been unable to break through my Dilley brick wall.

Here is the information that I have:

William Henry DILLEY
----------------------------------------
Birth: 7 Aug 1849, Oskaloosa, Mahaska County, Iowa
Death: 20 Mar 1920, Madrid, Nebraska
Buried in Oskaloosa, Nebraska.

Spouse: Cornelia HALL
Birth: 30 Sep 1856, Wisconsin
Death: 18 Sep 1911, Hagali Township, Beltrami County, MN
Marr: 6 Apr 1878, Freeborn, MN

Children: Caroline (1879-<1900)
Anna May (George Dolan) 1882 - 1929
Alice Laura (James Hansen) 1885 - 1959
Charles Earl (Hattie Mae Johnson) 1889 - 1952
Lucia Ruth (William Edward Oglesby) 1892 - 1928

The death certificate for William Henry Dilley lists his father as Joseph Dilley of France, however,

there are many inaccuracies on the death certificate as it was filled out by his son-in-law.

In my research, the closest that I can come to is that possibly William Henry Dilley was the son of Jacob Dilley and Elizabeth Bird from West Virginia.

The census records show a William Henry what would have been around the same birth year.

Also, Jacob Dilley and Elizabeth moved to Iowa along with the rest of the family.

William Henry lived with his family in Minnesota but moved to Nebraska with his daughter, Anna May, after the death of his wife, Cornelia.

Any help is much appreciated!

Thanks
Ruth , g-g-granddaughter of William Henry Dilley

UPDATE:

I noticed that on some of the "roll calls" there have been references to the Virginia Dilleys.

I went through my notes today and want to update what I have submitted.

William Henry Dilley was born in Oskaloosa, Iowa on August 7, 1854.

His obituary states he was born in 1849 but all of the census records I have found show he was born in 1854.

In the 1860 census records for Mahaska Township, Oksaloosa, Iowa, it lists a Jacob and Elizabeth Dilley with a son, Wm. H. Dilley who is 5 years old and born in Iowa.

This would be the same age as my William H. Dilley.

The puzzling thing is they also have another son named William who is 12 years old but he was born in Virginia. Wm. H. was the only son born in Iowa.

In the 1870 census records, Jacob and Elizabeth Dilley do not have William H. listed but William is listed as being 22 and working on the farm.

There is a William Dilley, 15 years old, born in Iowa, living in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa who is listed as living with R. and Sarah Chamberman (sp?).

The occupation is "teaming". There is another young boy aged 13 living with them also.

Maybe an apprenticeship which was common in those days. This fits my William H. Dilley age.

I have the marriage record for William H. Dilley and Cornelia Hall who married on April 6, 1878 in Freeborn County, Minnesota.

In the 1880 census records, William Henry and Cornelia Dilley are listed as having one child, Caroline.

They are living in Mankato, Blue Earth County, Minnesota. William Henry is listed as age 25, born in Iowa with both parents having been born in Virginia.

We do know that Caroline was born in 1879 and died at a young age.

In the 1885 census records, William Henry and Cornelia Dilley are listed with a daughter named Mary who is 3 years old.

William Henry Dilley is 29 years old which puts his birth year at 1854. They are residing in Mankato, Minnesota.

In the 1900 census records, William Henry is listed as having been born in August 1854 in Iowa with both of his parents born in Virginia.

Does anyone else on this list have any ties to Jacob Dilley and Elizabeth Bird? Or does anyone have a William H. Dilley in their records who was born in Iowa in 1854?

I would love to have concrete information that my relative, William Henry Dilley, is from this line.

Thanks again,
Ruth

RESPONSE FROM LYNNEA:

Hi Ruth -

Don't know if this will help or not, but I found this for you .....

Portrait and Biographical Album of Mahaska County, Iowa. Chicago, IL, USA:
Chapman Brothers, 1887.

Jacob Dilley, of Madison Township, is a native of Virginia, born April 15,
1810, and is a son of Martin and Catherine Dilley, who were also natives of
that State. Mr. Dilley came to Iowa in the year 1850, and located in this
county. In 1835 he married Miss Elizabeth Bird, a native of Virginia. By this
marriage there were five children: Amos, deceased; Jane is the wife of J. Q.
McConnell, of this township; David M. and Floyd also reside in this township,
and pursue the occupation of farming; William H., a contractor and fine
workman, lives in Topeka, Kan. The mother of these children died in 1875, and
Sept. 28, 1878, Mr. D. was again married, to Mrs. Nancy C. Moon, widow of J.
Moon. She is the daughter of Robert and Margaret (Roseborough) McConnell,
natives of South Carolina. The former died in 1847, and the latter in 1857.
Mr. and Mrs. Dilley are members of the Church of Jesus Christ. He is a
prominent and leading member of the Greenback party, and has held the offices of
Justice of the Peace, Township Assessor and Road Supervisor. He is now the
owner of 108 acres of land, which is in good cultivation and well improved.
Mr. Dilley is a pioneer in this county, and is a man well and favorably known
during all the years he has lived in the county. He has prospered fairly
well, and enjoys fully the confidence and regard of his circle of acquaintances and friends.

Beth Craig

Good Evening Teddy,

Yes, I am back on the web. My new e-mail address is abcfhist@hotmail.com.

Yes, I am still searching for the parents and siblings of John, Richard and Joseph Dilly - Dilley of Fauquier Co., Va.

Since this has been a brick wall for over 20 years and we have not been able to find any additional information on Fauquier Co.,

have started searching for information on the spouses of Joseph and Richard - Sarah and Elenore Mc Coy,

daughters of John and Rachel (Malone (various spelling) Mc Coy of Fauquier Co., Va.

Inn the process of searching for John Mc Coy, was told that he was from Md.

True, there was a John Mc Coy in Fauquier Co. that was from Md. but he was married to Nancy.

Alas, not our line. HOWEVER, there was a John Mc Coy who was married to an Rachel that migrated to Faiqiuier Co, Va. from Augusta Co., Va.

Now, some of yhou are researchers of Dilley in the Augusta Co., Va.

Would one of you be so kind to send me anyh data that MIGHT conect to these three brothers.

Will be looking forward to hearing from some of you kind folks.

Beth

My line is the same as Teddy's until the very end.......she's the granddaughter of my mother's youngest brother.

The earliest generations we're reasonably sure of without actual paper proof came from New Jersey.........

above that it gets pretty murky because there are so many variations in ideas of parents and birthdates and so on,

what with numerous Richards and Jonathans and spellings of the Dilley/Dilly/Dille name. However, here's what we think is the most likely "tree".

1. Richard DILLEY Sr. b. 1740 New Jersey d. 1799 Hanover, Luzerne, PA
(we're not sure who he married.....again confusing information about her and about his probable parents.)

2. Jonathan DILLEY b. 1769 New Jersey d. ? Hanover, Luzerne, PA, m. Polly BURRITT

3. Deriah John DILLEY b. 1797 Hanover, Luzerne, PA d. 1870 Iron Co. UT m. Almira D. EYKE in 1822 Luzerne, PA

(adopted by aunt and uncle John and Clarissa Jameson after death of her parents, and known as Almira JAMESON)

4. Sarah Ann DILLEY b. 1825 Delaware Co., OH d. 1857 Santa Clara Co., CA
m. Asahel Joseph BENNETT in 1840 Iowa Co., WI; b.1815 NY d. 1891 Idaho Falls, Idaho

5. Martha Ann BENNETT b. Jan 1848 Iowa Co., WI d. Feb 1910 Los Angeles, CA
m. Johan F. C. JOHANSEN (John F. C. JOHNSON) in 1868; b. 1830 Denmark d. 1893 Los Angeles, CA

6. Josephine Agnes JOHNSON b. 1869 Los Angeles Co., CA d. 1926 Ventura, CA
m. Daniel Derias DAVIES in 1888 Los Angeles Co., CA; b. 1870 Los Angeles Co., CA d. 1934 Ventura, CA

7. Maybelle DAVIES b. 1892 Long Beach CA d. 1982 Ventura, CA
m. Alfred S. MCGONIGLE in 1920 Ventura, CA; b. 1892 Knox Co., MO d. 1981 Ventura, CA

8. Margaret (Margo) MCGONIGLE b. 1922 Ventura, CA
m. Robert H. STAPLETON in 1951 Ventura, CA; b. 1923 Minneapolis, MN d. Mar 2006 Ventura, CA
