Teddy,
I think it's great that you have this Dilley Family website. It's
a valuable resource and I really appreciate the time you have
put into it.
I am a descendent of Lafayette Dille of Mount Victory, Hardin
County, Ohio. I wanted to make a few corrections to the information
that you show for Lafayette's family. Lafayette W. Dille was born
in Mount Victory, Ohio. He married Anna Marmon, also of Mount
Victory, Ohio. They had three sons, Herbert Marmon (not Hubert),
Lowell, and Carlos. All three sons were born in Mount Victory,
Ohio. Herbert Marmon Dille was born September 06, 1897 and was
killed on the Erie Railroad in Richland County, Ohio on October
14, 1918 (not 1913). He was a brakeman on the railroad. Herbert
was married to Nellie Bond. They had two children: 1) Kenneth
James, born October 14, 1915, and died of diphtheria on October
07, 1921, in Marion County, Ohio; and 2) Dortha Lucille born July
28, 1917, and died August 11, 1994 in Wayne County, Ohio. Dortha
was married to Emit Bernard Neel on April 15, 1936.
The family information was provided by Lafayette Dille and
Dortha Lucille Dille. Dortha was my grandmother.
Thanks for all your hard work.

Teddy, the name is Warwick BUTCHER who married Mary Margaret
Dilley. I have
never ran across the initial M in my research.
Could you correct this. Thank you, Lola

Teddy I find another error in these files. There is no M in
front of Rachel Murphy Dilleys name.
Rachel was married to Isaac Dilley son of Christian Dilley.
Isaac born 1800 died 11/30/1872
Rachel born 2/9, 1812
Could you correct and bring up to date the births and deaths.
Thank You --Lola

OHhhh, I got all excited- found that Forrest Garland Dille
connection finally in the new additions. Just one problem :) Forrest's
Soc. Sec. application in his handwriting states that his father
was Lewis Milford and mother was Ella Moore. The BOOK says his
parents are Cephas and Mary L. (Day) Dille. Forrest's grandson
is still living and told me that Lewis
Milford had a brother, William - Cephas has a brother William
in the book. and a brother Milford. Here's what I think. Cephas
has a son (Lewis) Milford who has a son, Forrest Garland (an only
child). Whoever gave the info for the book- missed a generation.
Cephas was born in 1827, Forrest Garland not until 1891 according
to the book which would make him 64 when Forrest was born-not
impossible but his wife would have been 55-very unlikely. My information
shows Lewis Milford born 1857 (tombstone), Forrest Garland 1891
Anyone have anything on Cephas and Mary L. Day's children?
Help!!

Hi Teddy (TNoye@aol): 3/26/00
First I want to say that I think your web site is super. Although, to date, I have not perticipated in it I have totally enjoyed reading all the material that has been collected.
To follow is three generations of Hannah Dilley, daughter of Ephraim and Lucy Dilley. I haven't done much on the Dilley family since the middle 1980s, but accidently stumbling onto your web site a few months ago got me excited and I started organizing the material I have. The wonderful material contributed by Donald Dilley has prompted me to start sending material pertaining to Ephraim's children that have not been included. If you can use this material in any way then I will complete my line, Anna Dilley and Enoch Thomas, and also the descendants of Joseph's. Most of my information is for those that primarily remained in Guernsey County, Ohio. I hope I haven't sent too much information. If anyone wants additional information on the generations I have not included on the following family they can contact me. If he wants feel free to give a copy to Donald Dilley to update his data base. I would appreciate any corrections or additions.
Thanks!
Sandra Williams

ROSE
The clan Rose were settled in the district of Nairn in the Twelfth
century, and there is documentary evidence to prove that about
1219 Hugh Rose of Geddes was witness to the foundation character
of Beauly Priory. His son, Hugh, acquired the lands of Kilravock
by marriage, and Kilravock remains with the family to the present
day. In 1390 the family charters and other documents were destroyed
by fire in the cathedral church of Beauly, where they had been
placed for safety. In 1433 John Rose, 6th of Kilravock, received
confirmation of his lands from James I. His son, Hugh, built the
old tower of Kilvarock in 1460. The barony of Kilravock was erected
in 1474. Hugh 10th of Kilravock was taken prisoner at the Battle
of Pinkie in 1547. He was sheriff of Ross, Constable of Inverness
Castle, and sheriff-principal of Inverness. He died in 1597, aged
90 years.
The Roses of Kilravock were diplomatic in their relations with
their neighbors and consequently lived peaceable compared with
most other clans. They were loyal to the government during the
Revolution and the Jacobite Risings of 1715 and 1745. Hugh, 15th
of Kilvarock, sheriff of Ross, voted against the Union of 1707,
but was one of the commissioners to represent Scotland in the
first British parliament.
Sir Hugh H. Rose, born in 1803 was in command of the Central Field
Force during the Indian Mutiny, during which he fought sixteen
successful actions, captured 150 pieces of artillery, took twenty
forts, and captured Ratghar, Shanghur, Chundehree, Jhansi and
Calpese. He was raised to the peerage as Baron Stratnairn in 1866,
and was made Field Marshal in 1877. Kilvarock Castle, built about
1460, is still inhabited by the Chief of the clan.
William Rose (-1807), Revolutionary War, descended from Sir Robert
Rose of England; married Elizabeth Frost, Fayette, Pennsylvania.
They had twelve children, one of whom was Benjamin (May 2, 1789-July
18, 1925) married Hannah Dilley (June 20, 1789-March 14, 1865),
who had six children. Their son, William (1811-December 30, 1878),
married Mary Ann Thompson (May 17, 1810-February 11, 1901). They
had eight children. A son, Benjamin Franklin (January 28, 1840-November
19, 1925) married Elizabeth Milhone. Seven children blessed their
home, one named William Elmer (December 27, 1872-September 18,
1949), married Forrest Kayes (September 21, 1880-September 14,
1920). Their children were Frank Leslie (September 29, 1900);
Martha (May 6, 1902-July 2, 1903); Everett Loyd (August 25, 1903-December
29, 1966); Clare Eugene (June 10, 1905-April 7, 1979); Doris Juanita
(April 4, 1907); Estaline Myrtle (September 3, 1909-August 1,
1969); Mildred Pauline (January 16, 1913); Wilford Paul (January
11, 1915) Carl Vernon (January 17, 1916-September 26, 1976); Harold
Bell (September 20, 1918). Their son Wilford Paul Rose married
Georgia Reed (February 28, 1919). Their children are Gary Eugene
(August 30, 1940), Ramona Kay (September 14, 1941); and Forest

RESPONSE:
Hello Sandra;
First let me introduce myself. I'm David L Dille and am the
compiler of the
350 years of DILLE's on the rootsweb.com Dilley home page.
I want to personally thank you for submitting the ROSE family
data that is
now included in the Additions/Submissions section of the web page.
With
your permission I want to incorporated your data into my master
data base
and to have it become a part of what is on the web page.
To save me the time of typing your data into the master database
would it
be possible for you to supply me a GEDCOM of the files to be added?
You
could send a 3.5" floppy by snail-mail or send it as an attachment
to an
e-mail.
Again thank you and my complements to you on the completeness
of your data
including your extensive use of sources.
Regards David Dille
*****************************
Teddy -
I got to the web page in a convoluted manner. I was in Ancestry.com
and in the
Dille message board, there I read about your web site on Rootsweb.com.
I don't believe I was in the
research area, the heading said "300 years of Dille's".
I'm not familiar with Worldconnect. Is
that a geneology website? If "yes" I'll be happy to
submit the file myself.
Below are two files that I've culled to just include "Dille"
information. One
is a GEDCOM file and the other is a Family Tree Maker file. With
the exception of the information about William's
birth date, which I got from your research, the rest of the information
I got from my grandparents
themselves, or from my parents. (My grandfather and father remember
stories about Hattie Pope (William L. Dille's wife)
how while her husband was in the Civil War, prisoner in Andersonville
prison, she bought more land and
doubled the size of the farm.)
Please feel free to add this information where ever you feel appropriate.
Thank you, Marla (Dille) Neeson (Marla.Neeson@phila.gov)

---Much of the information for Timothy and Mary (Dille) Johnson's
children
(other than Minard) is from a Dille researcher in Webb City, MO.
She
furnished a copy of Timothy's certificate of death, a copy of
Mary's
certificate of death, a copy of Timothy's father's obituary (December
18,
1891 North Topeka Mail) and a biographical sketch of Timothy from
"History
of Shawnee County, Kansas" published 1905 by James L. King.
She included
small photos of Timothy and Mary.
I saw the graves of Timothy and Mary just behind my grandfather's
grave when
I drove through Silver Lake briefly in the fall of 1998. That
is where I
found the Silver Lake centennial book in the little store-front
library.
I have copies of death certificates for Minard and Rose (Ritenour)
Johnson
and Bessie (Johnson) Williams. Mary (Johnson) Reed/Harbison's
information
comes from funeral records which I excerpted during a recent vacation
in
Florida. I found obituaries for Minard's son, Oscar David, in
a Sebring,
Florida newspaper. Obituaries for Minard's grandsons, Floyd, Jr.
and Bill
Clark Johnson, were in the necrology files at the Avon Park, Florida
library. Bessie (Johnson) Williams' obituary is from a Wauchula,
Florida
newspaper.
I visited the graves of Minard, Rose, Mary (Johnson) Harbison,
Floyd and
Floyd, Jr. in Avon Park, Florida.
The widow of Minard's grandson, Floyd, Jr., met us for lunch
during a recent
vacation in Florida. She told us what she knew of Minard and Rose
and their
family.
We talked briefly with one of Minard's granddaughters, who
is living in
Florida with her daughter.
I found the Dille connection to my family interesting because
I grew up in
northern Indiana with a number of Dilles. Pat Dille was in my
high school
class, I played behind John Dille in some high school sports and
Bob Dille
was one of our coaches. Diane Dille married my first cousin, once
removed.
I understand they are related to Mary Hill Dille.
Timothy wrote to my grandmother in Indiana in 1929 (shortly
before returning
to Florida, where he soon died), that he had had a stone placed
on my
grandfather's grave in Silver Lake as she had requested. My grandfather
died in 1911, but it wasn't until 1929 that my grandmother was
able to have
his grave properly marked. When my grandfather died, my grandmother
and her
four younger children were taken in for several years by Minard
and Rose, I
believe, until they could return to family in Indiana.
I hope to fill in some blanks as to Mary (Johnson) Reed/Harbison's
marriages
and children (I was told that she may have been married up to
five times)
and Oscar David Johnson's spouse and son. When we vacationed in
Florida, we
could not locate Avon Park newspapers for the late 1940s through
1981 to
search for obituaries and I did not have time to locate a Florida
state
census for 1925 that might have been of help.
Best regards,
Lee Cheesbrough

Hi Teddy,
I was just looking at your entries to Rootsweb. Thank you for
sharing them. I was most interested in your information about
Betsy DILLE who married Abner Bent. I am a descendant of Abner
and his first wife, Elizabeth Williams. According to what I have
dug up, Abner had 11 children. (3 with Elizabeth Williams and
8 with Elizabeth Dille). I show that Elizabeth "Betsy"
DILLE was born in Virginia, married Abner on 25 Jan 1817 in Washington
Co., OH, and died May 1854 in Wabash, IN. It's my understanding
that Abner worked shipping cargo up and down the Mississippi River
between Ohio and New Orleans. His first wife died in New Orleans.
He eventually settled down to farming in Ohio.

April 11, 2000 entry:
This is Ron and Janet Riepenhoff again. We have logged on and
are
receiving e-mails sent out by you and other Dille researchers.
I wish I
had this much help when I was working on the Riepenhoff Family
book. We
just published a 550+ page family history book and a 950+ picture
video
of the Riepenhoff family and we didn't have a whole lot of help.
This is some information on David Dille, SON of Caleb Dille, and
David's
children. We have too much information to put on all at once so
we will
try it in pieces.
This information we found in a book at the Ohio Genealogy Society
library
in Marion, Ohio. We found it just before they closed so we copied
as
fast as we could but we misplaced the name of the book. We will
have to
find it again when we go there again. This information was on
pages 63
thru 66 in a spiral bound book on the Dille family.
DESCENDANTS OF DAVID DILLE IN ATHENS CO., OHIO
David Dille, the oldest son of Caleb, was born in Washington Co.,
Pa. 30
Sept. 1785. He did not follow his father and most of his brothers
who
moved to Henry Co., Indiana after a generation in Belmont Co.,
Ohio.
David was married to Elizabeth Myers 2 Dec. 1806 in Belmont Co.
He was
still there during the 1820 census when he had two sons 10-16,
two sons
<10, and three daughters <10. During the 1830 census David
and his wife
were living in Belmont Co. with six sons and four daughters. Sometime
before 1840, they moved farther southwest to Athens Co. where
David died
in 1845.
Two sons, Lewis and James, appeared in the 1840 census of Athens
Co. with
families. David's wife Elizabeth appeared
in the 1850 census at age 73. David's will was probated 24 Feb.
1845 in
Athens Co., Ohio.
Children of David and Elizabeth Dille:
1. Noadiah (10-16 in 1820 census) m. 1 Oct. 1829 Frances Wilson
in
Belmont Co., Ohio
2. Jonn (John?) (10-16 in 1820 census)

7. Martha ((5 in 1820 census) m. 16 March 1843 John South
8 Absalom bc 1824 m. 30 Sept. 1841 Nancy Mercy Linscott
9. Christiana bc ((5 in 1830) m. 10 Apr. 1845 Silas Dille

The Dille book shows some children of David and Elizabeth Dille
by names
but without dates or other information. Records of some of their
descendants were found in the Thomas Ray Dille records at the
University
of West Virginia in Morgantown.
That will do it for now. Will send more hopefully Friday.

April 26, 2000 entry
Hi Teddy,
I have been watching with great interest your work with the
Dille"s.
The Dille"s has been my so called brick wall. I am related
as they
married into my line, but after Ohio and Indiana, they seemed
to have
dropped off the face of the earth.
After looking thru your posting on Roots Web, there are several
questions that I have, as your info. does not jive with mine.
My line originates in Virginia, and then migrated to the Ohio
area
between 1797-1800. The Mary McKain you have listed as marrying
Ichabod
Sr. shows she was born in Belmont Co. 1790, but none of us were
there at
that time. The last McKain born in Virginia was David McKain in
April
1796, in Winchester, Frederick Co., Va. or Washington Co., Pa.,
the
boundry lines changed often.
The next Mary McKain that my records show is being born to
James
McKain in Belmont Co., 1802 and she married a Ichabod Dille Jr.
from
Virginia, they wre married Abt. 1820 in Belmont Co. Their union
produced 4 children Emmaline, Matilda, John, and William. My records
also show that Ichabod served in the war of 1812, in the Ohio
Milita.
My records also indicate that the Mary born in Virginia married
a John
LayPort Abt. 1800-1802 in Ohio, and she died at Cadiz, Harrison
Co. Ohio
June 19, 1853.
I was wondering if you have any material that might disprove
my
theroy, it could be I have been on the wrong tracks so to speak.
I would be most interested in sharing what info. I have on
the
McKains. I do have a little bit on the Dille"s but after
Indiana I have
nothing, other than one of the children moved to Nebraska.
Hope to hear from you.
Steve (iguy@azstarnet.com)
Response:
Hi Steve;
First let me introduce myself. I'm David L Dille and am the
compiler of the
350 years of DILLE's on the rootsweb.com Dilley home page. I want
to thank
you for your input to Teddy ie:corrections/additions.
In answer to your question in regard to Mary McCain. The spelling
of her
last name McCain was taken from the original DILLE book. The birth
year was
an approximation based on Ichabod's birth year and the ages of
the listed
children. It was listed as Abt 1790 to fill the space.
I feel that Mary was indeed the wife of Ichabod Sr. We have
census and
direct kinship information that Ichabod Jr was married twice.
Once to a
Rachel Gaskill and then to a Rebecca Havens.
Based on your statement that Mary and Ichabod's union produced
the last
four children listed, it seems that Ichabod may have had a first
or even a
second wife before Mary. Jay Andrews, whose data was used in compiling
this
family, suggested a wife change could have occurred between the
years 1813
and 1818. Based on your information which lists the last four
children
there is another gap between 1832 and 1834 when Emeline was born.
I just went to the Jay D Andrews collection on the Dilley Web
Page to look
for the David Dille Sr work he had compiled. I'm sorry to say
it is not
listed. I'll try to do a scan and send you the pages discussing
the
Ichabod-Mary McCain family as reported by Jay D. He lists Mary's
birth as
1801.
I am interested in any of the findings in regard to Mary you
have
uncovered. Also you mention a Mary born in Virginia married to
a John
LayPort?.
Looking forward to your reply.
Regards, David L Dille

May 25, 2000 entry:
I was doing some research on the Dille family and came across your database. I think I have the connections right.
My g-grandfathers name is Jonathan Ichabod Dille born 9/18/1886 Andrews, Indiana. I just received a copy of his application for an SSN and it lists his father as Jehu E. Dille and mother as Nancy Jane Mote. The Jehu Dilly on page 23 of the Huntington Co., IN, 1860 appears to be the same as the John E. Dille (I141) on your database (siblings match), and his son Jonathan Dille is my g-grandfather. I'm puzzled about the birthplace as Valley Springs, AR though.
Jonathan Ichabod Dille married Lottie Wintrode in Andrews, IN and my grandmother Nellie Audrey Dille was born 10/16/06 in Andrews, IN.
What to you think, did I make the right connection? I'll be happy to share anything I have with you. You seem to have already done a fabulous job on the pedigree.
Thanks for your help.
