                Capt. Henry Tom1

                     Capt. Henry Tom was the son of John Tom and Nancy Ball. He was born on 3 December 1823 at Little Petherick, Cornwall, England.2,3 He married Susan Angel before 1851. He died on 21 June 1886 at Cardiff, Wales.4
                     He was a Master Mariner, British Mercantile Service. From 1855-1864 he sailed the clipper ship 'Oriental', built in Falmouth, Cornwall in 1846 by the N. Burns Co., and owned by Rawles. It's 'Port of Belonging' was Plymouth, and when it was surveyed by Lloyds in 1855 it weighed 713 tons. He also captained the "Cap Rouge", (1865 - abandoned 1865), "Fair Wind" (1866-67) and the "Jessie Boyle" (1868) ex Plymouth. These trips were mostly to North America, the West Indies, the Cape and the Baltic.3,5 He lived at 196 Ventotuna Lane, Padstow, Cornwall, in 1851.2 He lived at 5 Silver St., Roath (near Cardiff), Wales, in 1886.4 From Bill Tom:

                "I have a few mementos that belonged to Cap't Tom. It was customary after the trip across the Atlantic for the passengers to give the captain a gift in appreciation of a safe crossing, eg. the telescope that Jim has.I have a silver cup with the inscription:

                Passengers of the Oriental
                May 17th 1855

                This was at the end of a trip from Cardiff to Quebec City. An additional trip arrived in Quebec City May 18/56. I also have a wooden marline spike used for splicing rope and also a steel marline spike that Capt.n Tom used to test the solidity of the timbers in the hull of the ship."

                From Dianne Baird:

                When my grandfather was 9 years old, his mother left him with his father and went back to Queensland with his remaining sister because she couldn't handle the harsh life on the goldfields. My grandfather went to Queensland when he was older to try and find them but they weren't at their last known address so we have no knowledge of what became of them.

                I also know that when he was 21, he came down from the goldfields to Fremantle with all his pay in his pocket, intending to buy a passage to Canada to visit his relatives. He booked a room in a boarding house and one evening went for a walk into Fremantle where someone hit him on the head and stole his money. But for that, he might have met a wife in Canada and that would have been the end of the Australian branch.
