Biography:
James enlisted in the Navy soon after Pearl Harbor attack as an Apprentice Seaman and was shipped out to
sea on an ocean-going minesweeper out of Pearl Harbor. The ship was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine while they
were convoying a tanker of Aviation Gasoline in the South Pacific. As a "survivor", James ended up back in Pearl
Harbor Submarine Base.
James applied for, and was accepted to attend a Fleet School for Yeomen - ultimately, he became a Yeoman 1st class.
Fleet School graduates were to be returned to their previous command - but, since James did not have a "previous
command afloat", he was assigned to the Commander Service Forces Pacific as a Yeoman.
Later James took exams to apply for officer training back in the states, and was selected to attend USC - NROTC from the fleet.
James graduated from USC - USNR with class of 1946; He transferred to Harvard Graduate Business College where the Navy had
contracted the Supply Corps training courses, from which James graduated and became an Ensign - Supply Officer.
James was then ordered as the Supply & Disbursing officer on a destroyer, USS GOODRICH.
Eventually James retired . after 30 years - after being active in the Naval Reserve and attained the rank of Commander,
SC, USNR - in approx. 30 years.
James had lived in Newport Beach, CA for many years. He then moved to Sun Lakes, AZ, where he lived for over 15 years,
after retiring from the Naval Reserve. In addition, for 10 years, James was President of a nationwide truck line,
specializing in the transportation of Explosives and Hazardous Materials.
In February 2006 James suffered a mild stroke - so they (Phyllis, his wife) moved to CA to be closer to their son
(in Morro Bay) and daughter (in Salinas). They celebrated 60 years of marriage this April 6th - and are planning on many
more years of reasonably good health.
