1960 DECADE COMMANDING OFFICER
Captain Paul R. Alwine, Jr., SC, USNR (Ret)
A native of Binghamton, NY and Limestone, ME, Captain Paul Alwine began his Naval career
in September 1958 as a Midshipman on a Naval ROTC Scholarship to USC. While in the NROTC
Battalion, he participated in three summer cruises: 3/C - USS Yorktown (CVS-10) and USS
Los Angeles (CA-135); 2/C - NAS Corpus Christi and NAB Coronado; and 1/C - USS Radford
(DD-446) at Pearl Harbor. Additionally, he was one of the midshipmen from the USC NROTC
unit to act as Roman soldiers in the epic film "Spartacus", sang in the
award-winning Midshipmen Chorus that twice won awards at Songfest in the Hollywood Bowl,
and was Alpha Company Commander of the USC NROTC Battalion during his senior year. He
was also active in service groups such as Trojan Squires and Knights, Phi Gamma Delta
(Fiji) fraternity and various other student activities. He received a Bachelor of Science
degree in Industrial Management and was commissioned an Ensign, Supply Corps, USN in June
1962.
Captain Alwine then attended the Navy Supply Corps School in Athens, GA before assignment
to the fleet for four years of active duty. He served aboard the helicopter carrier USS
Valley Forge (LPH-8) and during a 1964 WestPac deployment, he was active in early Vietnam
operations. NAS Point Mugu, CA was his next duty station until he was released from active
duty in July 1966.
For the next 26 years, Captain Alwine served in the Navy Reserves in numerous Supply Corps,
Aviation, and Defense Logistics units within southern California, including four Commanding
Officer tours. In 1970, Captain Alwine received an MBA from California State University at
Fullerton, and graduated from several Advanced Management programs conducted by Harvard
University.
Always a strong advocate and supporter of Naval Aviation, Captain Alwine has flown in
tactical, training and support aircraft, including supersonic flights in the F-4 Phantom,
F-14 Tomcat and F/A-18 Hornet. He is warfare-qualified to wear the Wings of Gold as
a Naval Aviation Supply Officer. He is also a qualified general aviation pilot, holding
Commercial Pilot and flight instructor ratings.
In July 1992, Captain Alwine retired from the Navy, completing 30 years of commissioned
service. During his career he was awarded numerous personal/unit commendations and service
medals. He is a member of many Navy-related organizations, to include the Naval Institute,
Navy League, Navy Supply Corps Association, Naval Reserve Association, Association of
Naval Aviation, the Tailhook Association, and the USC NROTC Alumni League.
In civilian life, Captain Alwine has been in the computer and information
technology industry for over 35 years. In 2006 he retired from IBM as a sales executive, and now enjoys “living the dream.” He and his wife Binnie reside in Irvine, CA and enjoy travel
adventures around the world.
