1960 DECADE COMMANDING OFFICER

Captain Paul R. Alwine, Jr., SC, USNR (Ret)

A native of Binghamton, NY and Limestone, ME, Captain Paul Alwine began his Naval career in September 1958 as a Midshipman on a Naval ROTC Scholarship to USC. While in the NROTC Battalion, he participated in three summer cruises: 3/C - USS Yorktown (CVS-10) and USS Los Angeles (CA-135); 2/C - NAS Corpus Christi and NAB Coronado; and 1/C - USS Radford (DD-446) at Pearl Harbor. Additionally, he was one of the midshipmen from the USC NROTC unit to act as Roman soldiers in the epic film "Spartacus", sang in the award-winning Midshipmen Chorus that twice won awards at Songfest in the Hollywood Bowl, and was Alpha Company Commander of the USC NROTC Battalion during his senior year. He was also active in service groups such as Trojan Squires and Knights, Phi Gamma Delta (Fiji) fraternity and various other student activities. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Management and was commissioned an Ensign, Supply Corps, USN in June 1962.

Captain Alwine then attended the Navy Supply Corps School in Athens, GA before assignment to the fleet for four years of active duty. He served aboard the helicopter carrier USS Valley Forge (LPH-8) and during a 1964 WestPac deployment, he was active in early Vietnam operations. NAS Point Mugu, CA was his next duty station until he was released from active duty in July 1966.

For the next 26 years, Captain Alwine served in the Navy Reserves in numerous Supply Corps, Aviation, and Defense Logistics units within southern California, including four Commanding Officer tours. In 1970, Captain Alwine received an MBA from California State University at Fullerton, and graduated from several Advanced Management programs conducted by Harvard University.

Always a strong advocate and supporter of Naval Aviation, Captain Alwine has flown in tactical, training and support aircraft, including supersonic flights in the F-4 Phantom, F-14 Tomcat and F/A-18 Hornet. He is warfare-qualified to wear the Wings of Gold as a Naval Aviation Supply Officer. He is also a qualified general aviation pilot, holding Commercial Pilot and flight instructor ratings.

In July 1992, Captain Alwine retired from the Navy, completing 30 years of commissioned service. During his career he was awarded numerous personal/unit commendations and service medals. He is a member of many Navy-related organizations, to include the Naval Institute, Navy League, Navy Supply Corps Association, Naval Reserve Association, Association of Naval Aviation, the Tailhook Association, and the USC NROTC Alumni League.

In civilian life, Captain Alwine has been in the computer and information technology industry for over 35 years. In 2006 he retired from IBM as a sales executive, and now enjoys “living the dream.” He and his wife Binnie reside in Irvine, CA and enjoy travel adventures around the world.
