USC JLS/OLS History
This information is extracted from the University of Colorado at Boulder
website. See their website for more information.
Timeline
1942 - 1946
US Navy Japanese / Oriental Language School, University of Colorado at
Boulder,
1944 - 1945
US Navy Japanese / Oriental Language School changed its name to the
OLS when they added Russian, Chinese, and Malay in 1944. Most, but not
all, of the Japanese Program moved to Stillwater OK and OK A&M starting
in 1945, as post-war enrollment at CU was to double and room for the
school was in doubt.
1976-1994
Captain Roger Pineau, USNR, began collecting information on the graduates
of the JLS school for the purpose of including their contribution to
World War II naval history in the official record.
1980-1994
At the request of CPT Pineau, the CU Archives began collecting and amassing
materials on the JLS/OLS, largely because neither the US Navy nor the
National Archives had saved the papers of the School. Between 1990 and 1991,
researchers from the children of several JLS/OLS sensei sought information
about the treatment and pay of Japanese American sensei at the School,
instigating more research on the part of the UCB Archives. In 1992, CPT
Pineau, the UCB Archives, and the UCB Alumni Association put on a 50th
Anniversary JLS Reunion. As a result of the Reunion and the subsequent
death of CPT Pineau, the Archives acquired a number of
JLS/OLS collections including the papers of Roger Pineau.
2000-2005
Research interest grows in the JLS/OLS collections and prompts an
intensification of the US Navy JLS/OLS Archival Project, featuring the
newsletter, The Interpreter, the active search for collections, the 60th
Anniversary JLS/OLS Reunion in 2002, and the dedication of a plaque in the
CU University Memorial Center honoring the instructors and students of the
US Navy Japanese/Oriental Language School.
2005
UCB Archives is also are interested in documenting the Chinese, Russian and
Malay language programs initiated in 1944.
USC NROTC Alumni Association is interested in documenting the progress of
their USC NROTC Alumni and has established a website to document their part
in the JLS Program.
Since UCB Archives wishes to document the school and the influence it had on its
graduates, they are taking the broadest possible approach. Many graduates
who do not have much in the way of papers may consider putting comments
down on tape, as oral histories are very important. Others may feel that
if they have no documents and left the Japanese language field, they have
nothing to offer. Nevertheless, even a resume or vita from each graduate
would be of enormous use to scholars on this topic.
