GySgt Richard P. Baughman enlisted in the Marine Corps in July 1983 from Shirley, Indiana.  He reported to MCRD San Diego to undergo Recruit Training with Lima Company, Third Recruit Training Battalion.  Upon graduation, he was assigned to the Communications Electronics School, Twenty Nine Palms, California for training as a Communications Center Operator.

After completing Communications Center Operator Course, PFC Baughman was assigned to First Battalion, Seventh Marines at Camp Pendleton California. During his assignment there, he participated in numerous training exercises, which culminated with a six month deployment to Okinawa, Japan.  Upon return to Camp Pendleton, LCpl Baughman was transferred to the Seventh Marine Regiment where he was assigned as a Communications Watch Chief, Naval Warfare Publications NCO, and Traffic Analysis NCO.  On September 2 1986, he was meritoriously promoted to Corporal.  Upon re-enlistment, Cpl Baughman was assigned to Ninth Communications Battalion in August of 1987. While there, Cpl Baughman held billets of Communications Watch Supervisor, Tactical Publications NCO, and Communications Watch Officer.  After promotion to Sergeant in January 1989, he was assigned to Bravo Company, Ninth Communications Battalion where held the billets of Platoon Sergeant, Training NCO, and Communications Chief.  He also participated in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Upon return to Camp Pendleton, Sgt Baughman returned to Twenty Nine Palms for training as a Communications Center Chief.  Upon completion of training, he returned to Ninth Communications Battalion and was assigned to Support Company as the Assistant Satellite Communications Chief and assisted in the fielding and employment of the Marine Corps Message Switch.

During April 1994, Sgt Baughman attended Drill Instructor School at MCRD San Diego and upon completion was assigned as a Drill Instructor with Lima Company, Third Recruit Training Battalion.  Sgt Baughman was promoted to Staff Sergeant during February 1995 and continued to work as a Drill Instructor and Senior Drill Instructor until May 1996.  Upon completion of Drill Instructor Duty, SSgt Baughman was assigned to Combat Service Support Group Three in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii where he was the Platoon Sergeant for the Communications Platoon.  SSgt Baughman was then further assigned as the Assistant Data Communications Chief and later as the Data Communications Chief.  He held the billet of Communications Chief for two Support Detachments and the Data Communications Chief for Third Force Service Support Group Forward.  GySgt Baughman was promoted to his present rank on 1 January 1999 and was assigned as the Assistant Marine Officer Instructor, University of Southern California in June 1999.

GySgt Baughman has been recognized as Marine Non-Commissioned Officer of the Quarter and graduated with honors from Drill Instructor School and the Marine Staff Non-Commissioned Officers Academy. His decorations include three Navy Achievement Medals, Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, and other various campaign and service awards.
