Biography - contributed by Kathleen DOYLE KEENAN, the daughter of John L DOYLE:

John L DOYLE was born January 21, 1921 in Texas. He received a BA from San Diego State College and MBA from UCLA.

John earned his nickanme "The Blade", while at Redlands V-12 Unit, because he was so tall and thin.

While in training at Quantico VA, he rode in a blimp spotting German subs. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant, and served in combat in the invasion of Okinawa. He served in the Marine Corps through the rank of Major.

John met his wife, Barbara MOORE DOYLE while with the Redlands V-12 Unit. They were married April 22, 1943, in Redlands. After World War II, John and Barbara moved about for while he obtained his masters. They returned to Redlands in 1951, where they lived until their deaths. They had three children, a son John N DOYLE and two daughters Kathleen DOYLE KEENAN, and Susan DOYLE.

After his military years, John spent most of his working life in the citrus juice business. He bought a division of Pure Gold called Real Gold, and turned it into one of the nation's leading exporters of concentrated fruit juice. Real Gold was purchased in 1961 by Coca-Cola, and John worked for a variety of firms afterwards, many also in the citrus business. At the time of his death, John was running a small food brokerage called Webster International.

John died in July 19, 1990. His wife, Barbara died May 17, 1997. Their final resting place is Redlands, CA.

Family Memories - A story as told by John N DOYLE,

" I don't know how long Dad headed the outfit. He didn't talk a whole lot about the war. He did say that one day some brass were touring the outfit and the top guy asked him "Is this what you joined the Marines to do?"

Dad said "No, sir!" and soon he was on a transport going west."

Family Memories - A story as told by Kathleen DOYLE KEENAN,

John is right: Dad didn't talk about the war much. He did tell me that the military and government had little information about Japan and the islands, and what little they had was outdated. Before invading Okinawa, the men were warned about a deadly poisonous snake called the "habu." Everyone was very nervous about the snake, in addition to worrying about Japanese snipers. But no one saw a snake, much less was bitten by one. One day, he was leaning against a tree when he saw a brown, weaselly creature run out of the underbrush. He realized he was looking at a mongoose, and the mystery of the missing habu was solved.

He also told of being blown off course by a hurricane while spotting subs from a blimp. They aren't sure exactly where the hurricane left them, but they were pretty certain it was South America -- possibly Brazil, which was hostile. But they made it back OK.
