What does the V stand for? What is the significance of the numbers?

In the Naval services (Navy and Marine Corps), the aviation units have designations for the type of aircraft and the unit number - The following letters have significance:

V - stands for Fixed Wing
H - stands for Helicopter
M - stands for Marine Corps
FA - stands for Fighter Attack

323, 531, 314 are the unit numbers -

During the War - the Navy used the letter V - as the designator for different type of Naval programs - the number after the V would represent a specific program. Each one had specific rules and funding - and each should have documentation in the US Naval archives -

some of the programs are -

V-1 - Accredited College Program
V-5 - Navy Flight Preparatory School (Naval Aviation Preparatory Program) (had their own wings)
V-7 - Naval Reserve Midshipmen's School (90 day wonders)
V-12 - Navy College Training Program
NROTC - Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps
H-P(P) Medical and Dental Program
Naval Training School (Cooks & Bakers)
US NAval Training School (Radio)
