Van ce family

Introduction
This is my second step on the road to a better knowledge of the Vance family, more than 6300 of them! Still, it is very much a work in progress and I’m publishing it despite the fact that it has lots of rough edges and bits that need sorting out in the hope of stimulating debate and the exchange of more information.
I'm trying to collate all the English, Scottish, Irish, American and other overseas Vances in the hope of finally sorting out the connection between them and my family of Vans of Barnbarroch. Many or all of the American Vances are convinced, by family tradition and through a book by William Balbirnie, that they are descended from Vans of Barnbarroch through an immigration from Scotland to Ireland round about 1600 - and genetic tests seems to indicate that this could be true of at least one group of these overseas Vances. My aim is to collect every (!) recorded Vance family and try to piece together the entire picture, using all the available sources and taking into account the genetic data.
I am co-ordinating my work as far as I can with that of the Vance DNA research project - for further details of that, see http://www.vancegenealogy.com/index.php. I would urge any male Vances to take a look at the website and consider having a DNA test done as this seems to be a potentially useful tool in untangling the truth of the matter.
I'd really appreciate any further information you have about any Vances (a gedcom would be ideal as it saves re-typing) and particularly any ideas, legends, or better still, knowledge, about their origins.
Vances can be found in many parts of the world; those so far recorded are in:
Scotland, principally in Wigtownshire, Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire
England, surprisingly widespread from Lancashire to Kent - and London of course
Ireland, in most counties of Northern Ireland (Ulster) and in Dublin
USA, widespread: I have excluded parts of this section of the database where I am unable to reconcile the many contradictory versions which have been published; so if you are looking for American Vances, please make sure you look in the index and not just under the name of the state where you expect to find them
Australia, particularly in Victoria
Please note that
1) This is a work in progress
2) Families are arranged in groups according to their origin and that this does not imply that, for example, the various “sons” of Fermanagh are related (though they may well be).
Best wishes to all the family,
Jamie.
